Transcripts
Guys, welcome to Casino Bravo Tv, your channel for Cuban dances
reggaeton and more. In this first part which will be a series of several videos
I'm going to talk about the history of the dance: casino. This first part is going to be called
"the casino dance ancestors". Well and before they tell me: so boring, the history of the dance , who cares?
I'm going to tell you that it does matter for two aspects: The first is that to dance
better you also have to understand the history of your dance because the dance
is nothing but the reflection of the aspects sociocultural, traditions, customs,
beliefs of a specific population, in this case the Cuban population. So...
if you want to dance the better casino you also have to understand how
and why the steps were born. How and why the Cubans began to dance from
certain way and the second aspect is that I gathered in this video several data
very interesting and curious that I have had to summarize of many
sources that of course I had to read and analyze to make it easy for you.
example your "1 2 3 5 6 7" that is known popularly in salsa and things like that I go
to explain in this video where they come from so stay until the end of the video
because a lot of curious data is coming up. I'm going to give you an overview
an overview of everything we are going to be talking in this video. We will be
talking about all the ballroom dancing Cubans who came before the casino dance
I will talk about Casino in videos 2 3 and 4 but in this video we go
to talk only about all the dances of Cubans who came before
Casino. We will be talking about Contra Dance ("Contradanza"), La Danza ("the dance"), Danzon
Son, and we finally got to the dance casino. So you have a view
panoramic of where we are let's start in the 18th century where
different dances begin to arrive from European countries to the continent
Latin American . Fashion dances like minue, the contradanza, and the waltz are going to arrive
also to the island of cuba .Let us remember that Europeans colonized Latin America
that is, Spain, England, France Portugal
etc. they reached the continent Latin American and also on the island
Cuba .We will see an adaptation sociocultural of ballroom dancing
Europeans to be called "Creolization" then later on we will not
call it for example against Spanish Contradanza or French Contradanza but "Creolized Contradanza".
Creole because it mixes my customs European with Cuban customs to
thus create your own dances or variants of European ballroom dancing. ok guys
so let's start in chronological order let's start with "the quadrille" (Contradanza) .La
Quadrille will be the most important dance for the development of all
the cuban ballroom dances that are going to come Contradanza originated in
England and means the word comes from english "country dance" which means
(country dance) because the peasant class danced it. later was
adopted by the nobility and had its expansion in countries like spain, france and Netherlands.
several variants arrived in Cuba in the quadrille for example in 1762 the
English took Havana in the eastern zone came the
French after the Haitian revolution many settlers and slaves escaped from
french colonies so we have the french quadrille (Contradanza). and
of course the spanish quadrille remains to be the most important of all
because some say that the French variant is the one that originated the steps and
such but there are studies that indicate that Spanish Contradanza was where we got
the figures to be seen later in all the other Cuban ballroom dances.
The quadrille had its peak in Cuba at early 19th century
that is, 1800 and the quadrille was formed the "Creole Contradanza" who had characteristics
special this quadrille contained the African rhythm of "tango" that you don't have to
confuse it with the Argentine tango and body movements of the
Cuban culture- This is how the quadrille was the first link in
all the Cuban ballroom dances that we are going to see later.
Atention! most important thing that the contradanza contributed
to Cuban ballroom dancing is the basic step that today
we know how 1 2 3 5 6 7 , it consists of four musical beats where
three steps were marked and the fourth was with the heel. 1,2,3 heel , 1,2,3 heel
heels etcetera etcetera alright, then the typical step like this with Salsa comes
precisely from the quadrille and this basic step is going to stay through
all the cuban dances who are going to come later alright, so I can't
say enough times how important this element is for development
of the cuban dances. ok I can't repeat how important it is
important ok guys leaving the joke aside this
Basic step is going to keep you through La Danza, of the danzón , son and Casino.
obviously with other variants. Other elements of the quadrille that we are going to
see for example in the casino dance is to have a "Bastonero" (a guide).
"the stickman" was an outstanding dancer who directed the couples directed the
figures was like the master of ceremonies direct figures and designated places
for couples. If you have ever danced rueda de casino you know that
there is a guide who directs the figures of the other couples who are dancing
another element that also contributed was the term of "getting lost" just getting lost
is when a couple can't catch the figure that the guide is showing
so basically the couple is "lost".
you can see various figures like the "rodeo" and the "Cedazo" at the casino dance
current and it is important to mention that the quadrille was danced in open
social position. Now also remember this is open dance position. later
let's see that the Cubans are going to adopt the closed dance position
but the quadrille we are dancing only in a open social position.
early 19th century just after the Creole contradanza
"La Danza" (the Dance) appears and we must not confuse the dance with the quadrille are two
different dances but at the same time cubans also describe that people
confused these two terms but they are two different dances. Contradanza
begins to lose its term of community
we started to see loose couples and so on is how Danza is born, Danza is
characterized because it is the first time in Cuban ballroom dances we see
a couple dancing in the position social closed because in the Contradanza
as I told you we have the social position open, now in Danza we have the
closed social position .So we saw Loose couples linked already without a
guide who said the figures but loose couples but still
doing the basic step of the quadrille. I'm going to do a little one
waltz excursion because the position social closed didnt came out of nowhere.
just the Viennese waltz became popular in 1780 and then expanded to England
by then all the ballroom dances of Europeans were communal. You had
a master ceremony saying the figures that the others had to
do .The waltz then it's the first dance with independent couples
it isnt as rigid and choreographic. There wasnt a person in front
what told you what you have to do and the waltz is just the first dance
where the couple danced in position social closed .people came up
to think that that was super vulgar because two people danced together.
Just imagine. and obviously the waltz too arrived in Cuba and that's how the
quadrille adopted the social position closed and La Danza was born. the danzón was born
in the late 19th century from Matanzas musician miguel Failde. Danzon
began to dance in the region of Matanzas. compared to dances
from other Cuban ballroom dances Danzon was slower and smoother and allowed much
more creative freedom for dancers this is how we can see a
significant transformation from quadrille that was a social position
open and more moved until the danzón that was slower and more smoother. In Danzon
converge musical and choreographic configurations that are their own
of Cuban culture that is why danzón is also called the "National
dance of Cuba". The uniqueness was that there were parts that were danced
and rested. for example we have the intro where you don't
danced ,there was no dance, then was a part where you danced
and you back and forth , etcetera Son (dance) came after.
about Son which is also a super beautiful dance and super important for the
development of Casino I will be speaking in another video apart but
here I wil only mention that Son was much more daring
much moved that Danzon. danced in a closed social position and
open social position and danced a lot by young people.
young people in love. the danzón is danced even today .people dance it
mostly older and was much more slow and smoother than Son. So
here with Son we can see the ultimate transition phase between what
we know today as Casino or popular terms "Cuban Salsa".
summary of everything we've been
speaking in this video we have: quadrille danced in open
position and most importantly which contributed was the basic step ,we have
La Danza thatis danced in the closed position and we have Danzon that
brought many features like body movements of the
Cuban culture. then we have the Son that was faster and finally we arrive
to Casino. I expect you liked the video.
comment on this video and in videos later we will
speak properly and in detail of the casino dance itself. so I hope
that you liked the video. And as Elio Reve
once said: "Im older than yesterday, younger than tomorrow" . See you guys. Ciao!
