🎥 Introduction à la danse Casino

Transcripts
guys welcome to casino bravo TV your channel for cuban dances, reggaeton
and more. This video is part of a series that I call the "dance history of
casino" I'm going to give you a little overview of everything that I will be covering in
this video. I'm going to be talking about the 1950s
that is, the beginnings of casino dance 1950 to 1959 and I'll be too
explaining how the name of the dance "casino" was born...why Casino is called Casino.
And of course I will be explaining how the dance was created exactly.
alluding to various factors such as:
expansion of recreational societies, heyday of important musical
groups, the rise of various dances like Son and the cha-cha-cha.
the media such as Cuban television and the cultural
penetration of the US. All these factors are going to contribute for an optimal cultural environment
in which Casino will develop very easily and
spontaneously. Ok folks, musical groups!
the casino was developed in the recreational societies, casinos, clubs and
dance halls. So this term that Casino
is from the street and such... no, there is nobody that dances randomly on the streets.
It was danced in specific places where there were musical groups to play
the music. But that idea that "Salsa" or Casino was danced on the streets
is a lie. From the "streets" is just an
expression that it arose in a spontaneous way. And guys, so that there is no
confusion a Spanish casino or casino it is just a place or
recreational center where the villagers do different activities and this comes from
the Spaniards who came to Cuba as conquerors and also imposed their
traditions. Then a casino is that a recreation center. It has nothing to do
with the casinos where one goes to bet that this is already an invention of the gringos
of the Americans who stole the name and used it for something else
people danced the national genres and trendy foreigners who were
played just by these musical groups. In Cuba there was
still racism coming obviously from Spanish colonialism and
that's why there were recreated societies for black and white and even "mulattos" (coffee like colour)
groups or artists were hired depending on racist divisions or
categories of clubs or casinos. In the white upper class parties
there played groups that wear elegant clothes and
worked permanently in these places. The most famous groups of this
era were "the Conjunto Casino" and the "Casino de la Playa" (beach casino)
At the parties of blacks and mulattoes played orchestras of great popularity such as the orchestra
Orquesta America, the Aragon and the "Arcaño y sus Maravillas" All these groupings
you can check on spotify so you can get a better idea of what it sounded like
Cuban music in the 50s. And of course there were also private parties
of any social division so these groups also went to
private parties to play their music. the most popular genres played
this time were: the danzón, Son, the guaracha, the chachachá and the bolero. And
of course also the groupings they always looked for the preference of
dancer it's like you're going to a party today from salsa they also play bachata or kizomba
so the Cuban dancer always on another time of the party wanted to listen to
another kind of music. So we had a wide range of musical genres that
they played at these parties. Let's go to the dances: what dances had
influence on the casino dance? I will be mentioning some of these
dances, two of them had to do with the casino dance and another
it's kind of controversial now so stay attentive. The danzón and the son are fundamental
pillars for the creation of casino dance. There is no discussion. Son is
a musical and dance genre that has most notably influenced in the
development of music and cuban ballroom dance since it appeared. Son
has its origin in Guantanamo and in Santiago de Cuba that is, in the area:
eastern island the Son came to Cuba in 1909 and well it is said
many times that well, the Son came to Havana, that is, to urban centers and
there Casino was formed but that is a lie because in all cuba there are casinos
that is, places where the different dances were practiced.
It is a lie that Son only reached Havana and in Havana the dance was created
no no no. Every town that is large enough had a casino and
all the cuban ballroom dances. Son had its first boom in
the 20s and 30s with the sextet trios and septets (names for music groups) and in the 50's ,the time that
we are talking about right now, with jazz orchestras.
both rural and local variations of Son are for example the changüí ,the sucu sucu, Son habanero
Son Guaguanco and there are enough variants at that time .In the case of Son
montuno its a musical term and not danceable because people think a lot
sometimes: Son montuno, Son from the mountain
Son that comes from rural areas but It is not like that. Son montuno is clearly a
musical term .Then what happens with the danceable variants of the Son:
we have for example the changüí and the succu succu. Slightly different ways of
interpret the Son but the peasants dance in a very
exaggerated way in a time that was super conservative because Son is a
dance of love with elegance and cadence and softness. So how the
peasants danced is very exaggerated so what we want to do to carry out the Casino
dance is delete this way exaggerated to dance the Son because
we want to take the Son from its most purest form
to be able to describe how the figures of the Son adapted to Casino.
but if we see all these movements exaggerated we will not see it at Casino
we want to separate these exaggerated
ways of how the peasants danced
to describe the Son as a dance that had
a decisive influence in Casino dance. I want to
insist on this point because cabaret dancers or even the
national folk ensemble ,all professionals, began to exaggerate
much the Son .So they saw what was danced in the rural areas and
thought it's the only way to dance Son. So you have to move your arms like this
very exaggerated way to dance it but what happens is with all that exaggeration
one is distracted from what is truly Son: that was quite simple
elegant and did not have all these additional steps that the cabaret
gave because cabarets do not reflect the reality of what dance is and
several professionals just that, professional dancers but
spontaneous/casual dancers are those who danced the Son. So Son is in reality
much simpler and not like danced in rural areas. What doesnt
mean it's wrong how the peasants danced. I also love how
you dance for the changüí . I dont want you to misunderstand me. only that
for dance analysis we must remove all those exagerated
variants of dancing the Son to be able to adapt it easier
to Casino dance. So that you understand me better I'm going to give you an example with the blues
blues had influence in the country had influence on rock and roll
then to explain how the blues as a musical term it had an influence on
our other genres we will not take the most aggressive way
of how the blues was played but let's take the most standard way, most
simple to explain how these patterns musicals were adapted to these other
styles and we do the same with the son We are gonna take the most traditional way
simplest, cleanest of how Son was danced to explain how the figures are
moved to Casino dance and not these exaggerated ways.
so guys you have to imagine that at parties when
the music of the danzón was not played, because if they played Danzon also Danzon was danced.
And when Danzon wasnt played Son music was played. So people took
what they already knew about Danzon dance and used it to interpretate Son music.
this is how Son was born more or less. it's like the most primitive casino to
put it like this so we want to focus on that
how Danzon was danced adapted to Son music.
So it is quite simple and not so flashy and exaggerated.
So lets go to the specifics of what elements Son contributed to Casino.
Im gonna talk about choreographic and musical elements. Son contributed with the rhythmic scheme (Clave Son)
essential to execute the basic step to the musical time. The Son
can be danced "in time" or "against of time" with the Clave, the Clave is this here:
The pattern of the Clave is:
I'm not a musician but I also know a little bit about Cuban music...
then the most traditional way of how Son is danced is "against the time"
it is the most enriching way to dance it but you can also dance
"at the time" of the Clave. Many purists or maybe a dance teacher at a party
is gonna say: "nono, the Son is only danced in "contratempo" and thats the only way..."
Maybe it looks better if you dance Son "against the time"
but you can also dance it "on time". So Son contributed the rhythmic scheme
rhythmic, the basic step to musical time. All of this moved to the Casino dance.
and we also have the heritage of various figures such as
closed position, the "pa ti pa mi" (for you and for me) where the couple opens and closes
we got the easy woman twists etc. also the figures obviously
they moved directly to the dance of casino . Now comes the controversy
Chachachá contributed to casino dance? Now Chachacha was danced together with
danzón, Son and Rueda (wheel) in Spanish Casinos but for me it didnt
contribute nothing significant to the casino dance. Chachacha really only has
three figures: you have "Cedazo" that is when the couple dance in close
position spinning in circles, dile que no and the "pa ti pa mi". Those are 3 figures.
All the rest is invention, so say all those loose steps that you will have
seen from Chachacha are fiction. Invented by cabaret dancers.
from the professional dancers from the folkloric national team. What is not bad!
love those loose steps but not that is the empirical way, the way the
dancer danced in the ballrooms and clubs
no spontaneous dancer is going to start... going to be doing pre-designed choreographies in
a spontaneous dance. So Chachacha is in fact quite simple and not
all these loose steps that one sees normally in the youtube videos.
very important to know that Chachacha is very simple like
I said the figures are practically the same as in Son.
Cedazo, pa ti pa mi, etc. It doesnt make sense to analyse Chachacha
as a style or as a dance that contributed many figures to Casino dance. Also
there is the argument that there was Rueda for Chachacha and so Rueda de Casino was born...
well, there was also Rueda for Danzon and Son before the 50s.
In the montunos, this musical part of Son,
they made changes of couples already then you cannot also
argue that the cha-cha-cha had influence on Casino. Another
theory that is valid is that Chachacha brought the "floreo" (playing with the feet)
floreo means when you do enough little steps with your feet and a lot of style
This is because the structure of Chachacha is: 1,2 chachacha, 1,2 chachacha
if we put that into the timing of Casino dance
or "Salsa" if you wanna call it like that it would be for example: you could use instead of 1 2 3 5 6
7 could be one two three five or six cha cha cha takes three more steps
additional. So there are people who argues that without style there would be no
casino
Also valid theory. Not only Chachacha but also Cuban rumba brings an element of
the arms for example that use the dancers when they are performing. That
all these two elements the feet and the arms are those that almost gestated Casino
My theory is more that Danzon and Son obviously contributed
in the structure to the dance. So without Danzon and Son there is no Casino
but without Chachacha there is still Casino. Maybe it is a more plain and boring Casino without
style but in its essence at least there is some Casino: that's my theory.
But as I told you, you can write in the comments what you think
Now pay attention: the most important theory to explain how Casino was created
is the "Rueda de Casino" (Casino wheel) because first couples were dancing in circles
and then they started to dance
individually. So the truth is that the dance name comes from the
Rueda de Casino. Because all pairs
have to do the same type of figures the angles of how the
figures had to be done needed to adapt to La Rueda because they all have to be doing:
imagine: this is the center and everybody has to do the figures to the center!
so...
Son had to adapt to La Rueda style. Not only adapt
to the figures and angles that were more... more...
more difficult to do but also the music began to change and began to
become more agitated and faster so what differentiates casino
from Son is... a big factor is that the steps are
being made to the front and not to the back: this is very important in Casino
Son is like I said a more primitive
way of dancing casino, so I think the angles and the music
made that the dancer spontaneously adapt and
began to take steps forward and the figures at a certain angle and that with
time was brewing that transformation from the Son to Casino dance.
or from Danzon to Casino dance: however you want to see it because both
dances had an influence on the figures. So for me the main
theory is that La Rueda itself either from Danzon or Son...
had a decisive impact on Casino. Lets go talk about the name:
why is Casino called Casino?? A newspaper article recorded
one afternoon how Casino was danced in "Casino Deportivo de la Habana"
It was a yacht club in the district of "La Playa" in Havana. This article is from
the year 1956 which does not mean that the casino was born in 1956 but
the name is registered for the first time which means we can
deduce that more or less between the years 50 years 60, this period that we are
analyzing, Casino was born! so the youth began to imitate
this event of this article newspaper that was the Rueda del Casino (Rueda of the Casino),
people said: "lets dance la Rueda like in the Casino (this yacht club). from the Yacht Club
from there it changd to "Rueda de Casino" (Casino Rueda simply)
and finally just "Casino". And so they say that...
the name was actually made. Curious is that any Cuban ballroom dance
from that time could have been called casino because there was a lot of ballroom dances
that were danced in these Spanish Casinos. So it is
really a coincidence that Casino got that name when
Chachacha, Son, bolero or any cuban dances that was danced in these places
could have been called also casino. And there is also a minority
that says that the name comes from "Conjunto Casino" or "Casino de la Playa"
which are two orchestras that I just previously mentioned but I think
that theory is a bit a bit vague I think the other is much stronger
but it is still a theory that I also wanted just mention. Ok guys so
imagine we are in Havana in the beach district and in these
private yacht clubs la Rueda could perhaps develop with more strength
than in other places which doesnt mean that Rueda or Casino dance is
exclusive to Havana because as I said there were casinos all over Cuba and
it's a bit vague to say that it was born just in "Casino Deportivo de la Habana"
in that place specifically....
I think that Casino maybe developed more strongly in Havana but the dance
was being danced in various places of the island of cuba. And finally maybe if
you look on youtube there is a group that is called "The founders of Casino"
and those were the people who were dancing in the Casino Deportivo
and they say that they invented what we know as Rueda de Casino
what is a lie because the dance is not made overnight....
it is an evolutionary process of the whole population. So maybe they are
famous because they danced in that club private nautical
and they had a newspaper article but if you look on youtube do not be fooled because
these founders are not the ones who created Rueda de Casino or Casino dance. It is
important to know because even I I initially thought this was the case and
that these gentlemen are legends that to this day still
keep dancing in Havana and I i thought
they are legends because they invented Casino dance but
it is not the case. The dance is created in a spontaneous way and is created
by the entire population at the same time. There is no one who specifically creates the
dance . Well guys and finally let's talk of foreign influence, the US had
a great influence on dance culture and music of cuba.
US genres did arrive such as rock and roll from the 50's
and these genres alternated with the cha-cha-cha for example in the ballrooms
why is it important to mention this?
if you put foreign music at a party the youth will also
start dancing differently so people say that for example Swing
cotributed with his acrobatics and his turns of how they danced with the couple.
that also contributed elements to the l casino
I think It contributed but little because some say
that "no that did not contribute anything" others say "yes" I think it contributed but very little.
In swing for example the figure where you open and close is similar
both in casino dance and swing so that's why I mentioned the music
so you know that just like today if you go to a disco you
not only listen to reggaeton but maybe also pop or electronic music. The same
way it was at that time. Just imagine the young people dancing at a party
just picture the situation...
So they played Chachacha and then rock n roll
and then maybe Son music etc. etc. So were the parties in cuba. And the
private parties such as birthdays or 15s birthday parties also had an influence on the
dance. for these 15s years birthdays, for example,
choreographies of for example of quadrille or waltz were made,
various parts or choreos were made for the person who had a birthday. And
then the young people began to dance spontaneously the trendy genres...
say both nationals and foreigners genres then to create those choreographies
different structures of dance were made: for example there were duos or trios or
people who danced in rows or in circles like in Rueda!
then you can see that this mode of dancing the circle was
already being done also in private parties and among the youth that is a proof of
that Rueda de Casino was not born exclusively in the "Casino Deportivo de la Habana"
but spontaneously
And finally lets talk about the media:
radio disc and the gramophone helped the projection
of the music that was being heard in that time but the most important medium
it was Cuban television because because all the people there were not going to parties
was at home watching television so on television they put groups
dance or artists and what the population simply made was to imitate the
dance steps that were done at that time not only Casino but also
mambo chachachá and other things. Also from the US like rock n roll and swing.
everything that you could watch on TV
was also imitated at home. So
everywhere in Cuba at that time people danced: every party was danced as in the
home as with relatives in the private parties everywhere and cuba
It was a boom when we talk about the dance So guys a little resume of
all the factors that I just mentioned previously. Take this picture in your head:
we are in a period where there is a very active life of popular music and
the dance among the Cubans then the casino comes up in this
integration of genres and modalities in dance and music and all this
context of all the people listening music and dancing
that's where the 'casino was born. So why the casino is the king
of Cuban ballroom dancing? I think because the casino doesn't
has a specific music genre. So when at a party a
musical genre is not played it isnt danced either and so is for example with Chachacha: you are not going to
a salsa party and hear Chachacha never because people don't know how to dance
it because it is not played anymore but it what happens in the casino is that you can
play with any kind of music but specifically any type of music
Cuban then this is the beauty of this Cuban ballroom dance that has transcended
to this day that the casino does not have a music genre. There is no "Casino music".
as they say today there are salsa dance and salsa music but Casino is NOT Salsa and
salsa is also just a term commercial and the beauty of the casino is that
was danced with national and foreign music of that time
across the island of Cuba. so guys this was the second part
from the video series on the story of casino dance "the beginnings" in this case
stay tuned for part 3 and 4 where I will be talking more about development
