Transcripts
in today's video i am going to teach you
how to make a good sound on your ocarina
by far this has been the most requested
video by you guys and i wanted to make
sure that i could help you out
anyway if you are looking for an ocarina
make sure to use my code gina on the stl
ocarina website and you will get 10
off of your purchase the ocarina that i
will be playing on today is their newest
ocarina at stl and it is called the
dragon ocarina it is a tenor ocarina in
the key of
c i love it because it reminds me of
game of thrones
tell me if you think so too anyway let's
get started
on how to produce a good sound on the
ocarina the first thing we're actually
going to work on is breathing and before
you skip ahead
don't skip ahead if you don't breathe
correctly you are not going to be able
to make a good sound on the ocarina so
that is why i am starting with this
also if you want to go more than a
couple notes without having to take a
breath
then this is another reason that we have
to make sure to work on breathing
so the first thing i'm going to tell you
is that most people actually breathe
incorrectly
you would think oh gina come on i
breathe every day i am still alive
aren't i
well yes you are and in everyday life
you can be breathing incorrectly and
still be alive obviously but here's the
thing most of the time
people are taking very shallow breaths
and they're not using their full air
reserve
and that's what you want to tap into
when you're playing especially a wind
instrument
so i have a couple exercises for you the
first thing that we're going to talk
about
is where you're breathing so a lot of
times
people breathe in and when they're like
take a deep breath their shoulders go up
like this and they're only filling their
chest with air so they go like this
and so that is incorrect what you want
to do
instead is you want to fill up your
stomach
and your rib cage a good way to tell if
you're doing this correctly is to lay on
your back on the ground
and watch your stomach make sure it's
actually rising
make sure that your rib cage is
expanding if you are doing that
that means you're actually breathing
correctly so take a couple deep breaths
with me and
i want you to think about filling up
your stomach and your rib cage okay
great so now that you are knowing how to
breathe correctly
we are going to also talk about how to
take that deep breath in
let's think about it this way if you
were to dive into the deep end of a
swimming pool and you're trying to get
something off the ground let's say you
dropped
a penny or something and you're going to
go get it if you take a breath like this
and you go and dive you're going to run
out of air way too quickly to be able to
actually get to the bottom of the pool
it's the same way when you're playing a
wind instrument let's do this exercise
together what i want you to do
is breathe in for four counts and then
breathe out for four counts what's
really important when you're breathing
out
is having a steady stream of air we'll
talk more about this later but just
think about
having a steady air stream that sounds
like this
okay so let's breathe in together okay
deep breath
in one two three
four breathe out one two
three four good let's do it one more
time make sure that you're concentrating
on expanding your stomach and your rib
cage okay one more time
breathe in one two three
four and out one two
three four now i'm going to
challenge you and we are going to try to
breathe in for eight counts
and breathe out for eight counts if you
can't do this right away don't worry
this is something to work on
in your practice time and you will get
it i promise
so let's breathe in one two
three four five
six seven eight breathe out
one two three
four five six
seven eight okay did you make it
it's hard at first i i know from
experience but
doing this every single day is going to
make it so that you're able
to breathe better and you're going to be
able to play your instrument better next
let's talk about long tones this is
something that i incorporate into my
practice sessions
every single day and so what you're
going to do is remember when i talked
about that steady stream of air
that's really really really important so
what you're going to do
is take that deep breath in and then i
want you to look at an
actual manual clock that goes like this
that the arm is going like this rather
than your digital one because you're not
going to actually be able to count the
seconds
so what you want to do is every day
figure out oh i
played for 10 seconds i was able to do
10 seconds the next day you want to keep
improving your time so maybe it's 11
seconds maybe you can actually get to 12
seconds
it doesn't matter how fast it is you
just want to keep growing the amount of
time that you're able to actually hold a
note for
so what that's going to sound like and
by the way you can do this on whatever
note that you want
it doesn't have to be a particular note
but you take that deep breath in
and then you hold the note for as long
as possible with a steady stream of air
i'm not going to go the entire time
because i don't want to bore you to
death
but that's what you're going to want to
do and you do that every single day and
your time is going to improve
so much i can promise you that so
now that you're able to actually breathe
correctly let's talk about making a good
sound on the ocarina a lot of people run
into two problems that will
heavily impact your sound on the ocarina
the first one
is that they will have an incorrect
embouchure so what do i mean by
embouchure
that is the way that your mouth goes on
the ocarina so
picture you have a soda bottle let's
just say you have a coke
and you are blowing across it
okay so you do that exact same thing but
on your ocarina
okay so that is how you make a sound on
the ocarina the other thing is you don't
want to over blow
if you over blow it's going to sound not
very good and it's gonna sound something
like this
something like that so you don't need to
put a lot of air into the ocarina to be
able to play a sound
it's something like this
very easy to do
and you're able to produce the sound in
the ocarina so don't i know you get
excited when you're starting out and
you're like oh i have to put a lot of
air into the instrument but that
is not correct you just need to put a
little bit of air into the instrument
and you'll be able to get a sound
practice those long tones like i said
because that's going to help you create
a steady stream of air
if you do something like this and it's
not steady
it's going to sound like that that's not
what we're going for you want to have a
steady
stream so it sounds like this
and that's it that's all you have to do
one thing that you can do once you get
more comfortable
making a good sound on the ocarina is
what is called articulation
all you have to do is go ta and
it basically just gives you a more
definite start of each note so without
articulation it sounds like this
[Music]
i always like to say it sounds like an
owl going who
so if you use articulation and you go ta
it will sound a little bit more distinct
at the very start of the note
that's something that you can work on
once you feel more comfortable on your
instrument there are two other things
that could be happening when you're
playing if it's not sounding correct
the first one if you're watching my how
to play the ocarina for beginners
if you are not covering the holes
completely it's going to sound funky
and it's not going to let you produce
the right sound so instead of something
sounding like this
it's going to sound like this and it's
going to be kind of this like in between
note
so you don't want to do that so just
make sure if something sounds weird look
down at your fingers
and make sure that they're entirely
covering all the holes on your ocarina
whatever
the fingering is that you're doing now a
lot of you have been writing me and
saying
mine doesn't sound the same way as yours
does
and unfortunately i have to give you a
word of caution
a lot of ocarinas are made to be a toy
for kids or a decoration they are not
actually made to be played
i've personally picked up ocarinas when
i've been traveling and i'm like oh i
like that design that looks cool and
then i try playing it
and it doesn't actually produce the
sounds correctly the different notes
correctly
and maybe just the right hand will work
but then the left hand doesn't work it
doesn't sound right
so all i'm saying is just make sure to
be careful who it is that you're
purchasing your ocarina from
personally that's why i get all mine
from stl ocarina because all their
instruments are actually made to be
played
so that's why i would highly recommend
them and even though it is meant to be
played
it doesn't necessarily have to be
expensive they have ocarina starting at
25
so if that's something you're interested
in go check out their website and my
other videos
for more advice on that subject anyway
