industry Kelly hello and welcome to our
podcast hi thank you so much for having
me how's life in the TMS
industry it's great um so as you know
things in the tech world are constantly
changing right so you know a
I'm learning every day and it's really
fun and interesting to talk to our
customers potential customers and just
hear about you know what challenges
they're facing today really what they're
looking for in a partner so it's uh as
we like to say ever evolving ever
evolving okay
so as we read we learn right it never
stops uh before we go deeper into the
specifics you provide us an oversight in
why is a work why is working uh via TMs
in tracking industry and MTH
today yeah I think if if you don't have
technology to back up your workflow you
know you're behind and that is because
we need better communication we need
better connectivity among all parties um
and you know I mean we hear a lot of
these buzzwords out there today right
you know Automation and collaboration
and AI all this stuff but we have to
actually break down what does that mean
what does that actually do for us and
how does it help make our users lives
easier um I think you've got to have
some sort of teex stack in place you
know if you've got more than 10 trucks
you know you've got to have more than
just kind of working off a spreadsheet
we need ways to communicate and keep
everybody updated internally but also
externally right our customers today are
becoming more and more demanding of
having visibility into their shipments
um and we can help with things like that
um you know there's a lot of layers to a
TMS and and you know what what a system
like transport Pro can do for you and
can you tell us what has led you
yourself to become a part of this
industry
transport Pros theme and how did the
roads to it look
like yeah so I think like a lot of
people in our industry I kind of fell
into it um so I actually have a
background in journalism never thought I
would end up in in trucking right so um
I have a degree in journalism my
internships were primarily in you know
Communications roles um after college I
held the job in the Publications
department for a large government
contractor and um just give you a little
background so I'm originally from
Michigan born and raised then I lived
out in Denver for a few years with my
now husband and we moved in Nashville in
2014 and so it was shortly after that
move that I actually landed the job with
transport Pro and at the time you know
transport Pro was still sort of in its
infancy um
it was really rolled out to the market
in about 2013 and and then I came on
board in May of
2015 but I started with the company as a
technical writer so they were looking
for somebody you know I think with that
sort of communications background um to
help with the user guides and the videos
and so it was then that I really started
my journey with transport Pro learned
all about the software started learning
about the logistics in industory um
really became fascinated with it and I
did that you know for the first couple
of years then it sort of evolved um I
started helping out a little bit more
with just day-to-day support um they
knew the system so well so I started
dabbling in some other areas um even
started helping with a little bit of
marketing at that time and then that's
really just evolved into where I am
today as director of sales and marketing
um so I love it because I get to do a
little bit of every Kings Ro and how
different is the uh market today in
regards to the like what's 2015
right yeah so I mean for those of us
that have been in the industry for any
number of years we know that it's you
know somewhat cyclical I think we saw
just of course a really interesting time
during Co because you know the rates
were up and we saw a lot of capacity
enter the market um really nothing like
we've ever seen before and so you know
now it of course things are changing and
I mean it's it's it's up and down all
the time all the time definitely that
that that's one of the things in this
industry you can bet on it's always
going to be up and
down so trood Pro emphasize being a
cloud-based solution for management
could you elaborate on advantages of a
cloud-based approach and how it benefits
your clients in the transportation
industry absolutely so we've been
cloud-based since day one um you know
that's not something that we ever
changed at any point and really the
value with that is that you can access
your system your data from anywhere
anytime so if you have an internet
connection you can log in and you can
get access to your data you know if
you're out um
you know of course you know Freight
never stops so if you need to get into
your system and track a shipment see
where something's at you know
communicate with your driver um through
the system you can log in and you can do
that so it's very
convenient okay so uh building strong
relationship between supply chain
Partners is a key Focus right uh how
does your technology facilitate these
connections and what specific features
are designed to has collaboration
between asset based trucking companies
Pride Brokers and
shippers sure so I think there's you
know a a few things to to note with that
um as far as that connectivity and that
collaboration and how we can all just do
a better job of working together and
that's what transport Pro does we want
to be that that control tower of
operations to bring your workflow
together to to help facilitate that
communication um and connectivity with
everybody and so you know when we talk
about companies working with um shippers
you know more and more shippers today
are starting to require
EDI and so with that um you know for
anybody that might be kind of new to the
EDI World EDI is just electronic data
interchange and it allows for that
shipper to push or Tender loads over to
your transport Pro system so now you
know it's it's Sav saing your team time
from having to build these loads in
transport Pro we're able to push that
information over um and so it's just
creating that communication uh we can do
EDI with updates with with billing just
really depends on what that trading
partner is going to require but then
also you know how we communicate just
throughout the life cycle of the
shipment and how we help facilitate
again that communication so you know
that's probably one of the most
challenging things that I've seen
companies struggle with is is just
establishing that connectivity and that
that efficient communication so one
other way that we can help with that is
through just some of our native tools
not necessarily even requiring
Integrations um but we've got a builtin
text messaging tool for example and so
you know you need to communicate with
your carrier out on the road or your
driver we can have that two-way that bir
directional you know text messaging just
like you would on your phone but now
it's through your system and it's tied
to that load or that shipment so it's
it's more organized um we can even allow
for document exchange through that tool
um so we can receive that document save
it right into the load um it's all me
kind of neatly packaged if you will but
we keep that history of that
communication in there um and so you
know I think we you know we've also got
customer portals so how can we help our
customers you know see into what's going
on with their shipment well they can log
into a customer portal and see what's
going on um but we also do automatically
push you know push out updates um to
customers or you know parties that need
updates so you know it's it's ever
evolving um I'm sure things will
continue to grow and change with that
but dinner definitely an area we can
help with and from for now from your
expertise
uh where from do the biggest pushbacks
come when implementing your software are
those the drivers are those the I don't
know which part which part is the
hardest yeah I think I think the biggest
thing is just the the pain of change um
you know I still today talk to a lot of
companies that might be on just a a
really basic dispatch type of platform
or spreadsheets and you know it's trying
to shift the mentality of well this is
just the way we've always done it um you
know and trying to just have them
understand you know there's a better way
um we don't want to you be scared of
Automation and and the AI and stuff we
we are very intentional
in how we Implement those things um but
I would say probably the biggest push
back pain change um you know of course
you know there are companies who um just
don't want to spend more on technology
um that being said I think you'll find
you know if you look into it transport
Pro is a very affordable solution uh
very competitive um for the price and
and with what we can help you streamline
and automate you know and I'm not just
to say this as a salesperson but it's
it's well worth the investment I mean
we've seen you know returns from from
our
customers and once such a customer that
made a big push back has gone through
the process do they come back saying hey
this really is what we need they really
do they how does that conversation look
like yeah so you know take for example
um you know one of one of our current
customers right they were on um just
kind of an older platform um it it did
kind of the basic core workflow stuff I
think you would probably expect out of a
a TMS solution but they weren't they
weren't getting updated um it was kind
of starting to go stale they weren't
really implementing new features or new
Integrations of new technology and this
particular customer um you know one of
the things that she needed was EDI well
their their you know current TMS at the
time wasn't really doing that inh house
for them it was going to you know this
be this huge
undertaking and so when she made the the
switch to transport Pro you know I mean
she was just so excited about it it was
just really cool to hear her testimonial
of you know she was so glad that she
made the switch because it it truly did
make her and her employees lives easier
um she kind of didn't realize how much
manual work she was doing until she made
the
switch that that that's a good example
so now dispatch and load management are
Central to efficient operations right
how does transport Pro TMS solution
streamline these processes especially in
terms of matching Freight with driver
avability
and providing real-time data integration
with common ELD providers sure so yeah I
mean uh transport pro has a really nice
um we call it our freight operations
dashboard and so it's really that
Central Hub where the operations team
can work from where everything's you
know very
organized um and and laid out so we can
very easily see what we have that is
available that need needs to be covered
what do we have that's planned what do
we have that's in transit and it's at a
glance that that very clear visibility
um and then you know as far as
connectivity I mean once we dispatch a
driver or carrier on a shipment um you
know likely they're going to be
integrated with some of these common
elds out there so we integrate with many
ELD
Services where we can pull the location
information in automatically we can also
with certain providers have that actual
um shipment status update so that now
you know your dispatcher isn't having to
go into every single load and update the
status each time you know uh you know we
arrive at the shipper depart the shipper
and so forth uh we can help automate
that help automate those In-N-Out times
coming over um but also we have key
tools
from a track and Trace perspective where
our dispatchers our Ops users can go in
and take crucial dispatch notes um they
can escalate issues right I mean driver
gets into an accident we need to get
alerts on that we need to be able to
send that information and keep our
customers informed um so we've got all
these kind of additional bells and
whistles to help your team track that as
far as capacity and finding loads um I
think transport pro has created a really
strong great Community um so we do that
in a couple ways uh kind of depends what
angle you're looking from if you're a
broker using transport Pro we've got a
lot of native tools baked right into the
system where we will actually look
within the transport Pro network
carriers that use our system could we
maybe find a match for you there with in
that transport Pro Network where we
found available capacity uh we will also
do things like automatically keep track
of a carrier that has done a specific
Lane for you in the past um so we don't
have to go searching for it every time
um you know you can document preferences
for carriers we show that to you just it
just shows right on your dashboard and
then what's even better is once we see
that information well we can actually
send it email or email blast right out
of the system to let these carriers know
we've got this available load that they
may be interested in and so they're
really doing all that from one place in
transport Pro we do support some you
know capacity Integrations for that as
well um you know if we're thinking about
an asset based carrier using transport
Pro we've got um a tool on there that
will also search for avail Able Freight
in that transport Pro Network and
actually try to find a next logical
move um so there's you know there's some
different things involved with
that so for brok brokerage and 3
Solutions I saw on your website that
Transit offers a I would say
comprehensive package uh could you
highlight some of the key features that
set your brokerage software apart I
don't know such as so digital Freight
matching electronic signatures
integration with third party
applications yeah absolutely so I think
those capacity tools you know that's one
key thing um that sets us apart because
we've have a lot of those native tools
that aren't going to require an
additional integration to get you know
data like that um we do also have um a
built-in e signature tool like you
mentioned and so that really just allows
for um you know carriers to sign rate
confirmations electronically and when
they sign that it comes back into
transport Pro automatically attached to
the load so it's really kind of no touch
um you know once you send it off and it
comes back in um so you know you've got
that integrated right into your system
now I think another thing that kind of
sets us apart really I think whether
we're talking about brokerage or assets
um we are truly an allinclusive type of
system so with that um you know there's
a lot of solutions out there today that
are going to sort of nickel and dime you
for adding on modules or oh now you want
this integration got to do an update and
that's going to be $5,000 we don't do
that to our any of our customers so it's
that all-inclusive type of deal where
they're getting you know dispatch safety
they're getting billing accounting
they're getting preventative maintenance
they've got all this stuff built in and
so you get that with us from day one and
then you can kind of decide well how
much or how little of Transport Pro do I
want to use right up to that you know
we'll get customers that just hey I want
to learn how to use anything and
everything every single Bell whistle you
know they want to hit the ground running
we love that but you know you have some
customers too are like hey you know
we're just kind of getting started maybe
we want to just kind of start with that
core workflow and as we start to get
more comfortable you know now yeah we
you know we want to go and we want to
use the the claims module or the
preventative maintenance piece well it's
there and it's ready for you to use
whenever you ready that sound that
sounds great um Extended capacity sounds
like a valuable service for real time uh
data exchange between brokers and
carriers can you explain how this
service works and the benefits it
provides particularly for managing
Freight with multiple Transportation
entities yes so you know a lot of our
customers today um have both sides of of
their business right they've got their
brokerage arm and they've got their you
know their asset based trucking company
and again talking about you know
collaboration we need to allow for that
data Exchange and so if you've got a
situation where you need to Tender loads
from your brokerage to your asset side
we can set up that sort of handshake for
you between your systems um and so when
you do that then as you go and you
actually dispatch that load through the
asset side um all of those operational
updates those status updates you know
even paperwork coming in for that load
will actually talk back to The Brokerage
side so now I'm not having update
information in two places um we can we
can have your systems talk to each
other that's well uh R you mentioned
that within this uh also V accounting is
covered so billing as settlements can be
a comp well a compx and complex uh test
how does transfer Pro billing and
statement solution simplify these
processes ensuring accurate invoicing uh
to customers and timely uh payments to
the
drivers yeah so I like to say everything
in transport Pro is is very tightly knit
together in your workflow um it's a very
sort of logical workflow kind of like
the domino effect you know you complete
one task it triggers the next um and
so from the accounting
perspective what we'll actually do is
when you're ready to build your customer
we will create or generate that invoice
for you um so you're not having to go
into some other program you know create
an invoice do all this stuff we will
generate that for you of course it's
going to have you know your company logo
your information but then we take that
and we'll automatically combine that
with any supporting documentation that
you need
in order to build that customer so now
we're creating that billing packet if
you will and you can send that right out
of the system Bill your customer
directly but I think another key factor
um you know that a lot of our customers
are looking for is integration with a
factoring service so if we've got a
customer that's utilizing a factoring
company and they've got to get their
schedules over there we can actually set
up that connection um so that they're
not having to You Know download this
invoice from transport Pro and and all
that documentation that you need for
billing well now I've got to go log in
the factoring company's portal and I've
got to upload all that stuff over there
we can take that away so that once we
create that packet basically with a
click we can have those schedules go
over um right to your factoring company
so that's a key integr
you know just when we talk about
accounting and then on the settlement
side uh we are also automatically
generating driver settlements um so that
you know that is being autoc calculated
based on however it is you pay that
driver and then you've got a lot of
flexibility on that settlement system so
any types of you know additional things
um you know detention Lumber fees all
that kind of stuff that we need to be
able to pay out for is completely
customizable you know uh you can add
whatever you want there um we create
really nice clean looking statements for
drivers too so when you are ready to pay
a driver and actually process that
settlement will create the the statement
and have the system automatically email
that out um assuming they want it to do
that but uh you know beyond that lots of
reports uh to get that data you need for
billing for settlements um you know we
can also help companies set up recurring
things you know if you think about
especially in the owner operator world
we might um you know be taking x amount
for insurance every week or now you know
maybe we've given somebody a loan for a
th000 bucks and we've got to take back
$100 a week until tell he pays that
things like that um we can set um set up
to
automated and see those balances and
things at the time of settlement but
also make sure that that's being
displayed you know on the statements to
our drivers as
well and uh do those settlements towards
drivers uh show uh on driver's end in
real time for the future loads that are
to be settled or once they are done and
uh for the previous uh loads how does
look like yeah so in settlements so when
you go in say and you're ready to pay a
driver you process the settlement you're
basically going in like a lot of our
customers will do weekly settlements so
it's just you know it's really just
showing everything that you know they're
getting paid for you know that week or
if it's for the previous week so it's
kind of that completed settlement if you
will um but we do also have um an owner
operator portal so kind of like a
customer portal and owner operator that
you want to give access to the portal
can log in and see any available loads
that you do have see what's out there
but they could also go in and access
anything that's pending as well as
completed so it just depends what you
want to what you want to show that that
sounds like a great
option uh now moving to document
management I mean it's a crucial in the
transportation industry how does transer
Pro documents management system
streamline the storage and organizing of
essential paperwork I mean especially
with features like I don't know incab
scanning and Cloud secure cloud storage
yeah yeah so we kind of want you to
think of Transport Pro as your
electronic filing cabinet so anything
and everything that you you know any
kind of document whatsoever that you
need to have on file is going to live
and transp Port Pro um but it's
specifically when we talk about getting
documents in from drivers you know um
using things like cam scanner that that
in incam scanning or perhaps using an
app um like like Sam sah or some of
these others um you know we've got some
different solutions for how drivers can
get their paperwork into transport Pro
so one is to utilize um you know things
things like um samura transflow mobile
you know these would be a couple
examples of apps that we can integrate
well um and with that it it really
streamlines it because the driver can
take pictures of the paperwork in the
app and then send it in and it comes in
automatically attached to the load so
with that type of integration now I've
got somebody in the back office um you
know a billing user that's just going to
be able to see you know hey we've got
five loads that are ready to go we've
received all the paperwork and they
don't have to go in and actually do that
manual
indexing um you can utilize the text
messaging tool to get documents in so
again if you weren't using one of those
apps or just didn't want to for whatever
reason you can receive that uh image
through the text messaging tool and just
download it right into the load so that
keep keeps it easy um maybe keeps you
out of your email a little bit more um
but then we do also have a complete
Imaging module built into the platform
so we do have what we call our
intelligent capture um Imaging platform
and so if you do have you know drivers
or you know probably I'd say more of our
our Brokers use this because the asset
side usually has some kind of app but on
the brokerage side they can and you know
as they're receiving all this paperwork
in carriers factoring companies we can
automatically pull images in from that
email over into transport Pro and then
that intelligent capture system will
actually use machine learning to read
the email and autoindex the pages for
you so again you know just another
example where we can take away some of
that really tedious manual work um and
do it for you now we still want somebody
to go in and look at it and make sure
the system you know did it correctly but
you're really just kind of reviewing and
approving it and that has saved our
teams um just exorbitant amounts of time
on that paperwor
side integration Solutions play a vital
role in the I don't know staying
competitive in the transportation
technology landscape you would you
discussed some of the key Integrations
trust Pro offers with few fuel card
providers CLD Technologies other third
party Solutions how these Integrations
provide a competitive advantage to your
clients sure so you know we've got
probably well over 30 integration
Partners at this point and you know
we're continually growing that list so
that we can better service our customers
and and really be that control tower
so you know one example you mentioned um
which you know our customers are
certainly looking for is that fuel card
integration we don't want to have to sit
there when we're doing settlements each
week and manually input fuel card
transactions you know that itself can
just take hours so what we do is we
integrate with um several providers that
are out there most of the major fuel
card providers like EFS and love s and
um you know Fleet One Com data what we
do is we create this integration to
automatically do a nightly download um
and so we pull those transactions over
automatically and push the those items
over to settlements so now if I go in
and I'm doing settlements you know every
week on Friday well I'm going to see all
the fuel card transactions in there that
need to be accounted for um and I don't
have to go in and manually add those
things um you know another piece is you
know and of course that information is
going to feed into some of your reports
and things but you know as far as other
Integrations you've got you know
Els so there's you know there's a lot of
them out there on the market uh I guess
a few key ones we integrate with that
I'm sure everybody knows is samsara
motive formally keep trucking geotab
tracks now those are really the most
popular
Integrations and so with those providers
what we do is we you know we pull the
location updates in automatically we can
pull in hours of service automatically
so you see that information in real time
on your dashboard you're not having to
go log into that other solution um and
and we do have a preventative
maintenance piece as well so if you are
wanting to track preventative
maintenance schedules we can actually
pull those odometer re in as well um so
we can track that uh we are I guess um I
think a little more deeply integrated
with samsara that particular solution
for our customers can can serve as a
driver app where not only do we do the
basic ELD integration but we can send
the dispatch information to them in the
app the driver can update their status
in there talks back to transport Pro
there's messaging can send their
paperwork in so it's it's a very
complete integration that way um you
know factoring companies another one I
mentioned you know that that's a big one
that comes up on on demos and things um
I think on the on the brokerage side you
look at Key Integrations being things
like macro point right we've got to have
some kind of tracking service in place
um so that we can track the carrier and
have those location up updates flow into
your
system and and we integrate with
companies like my carrier portal um you
know rmis carrier okay you know there's
some of these things out there that um
we integrate with just to help layer on
that that security we need to be very
careful about onboarding and vetting
things like that so you know there's a
lot of solutions out there um we can
integrate with and and we're constantly
adding those would be some key
ones I have been talking with some
Brokers and colleague colleagues
dispatchers that are veterans in the
industry and uh we came to sort of joint
conclusion that
um uh current prevalent state of fraud
in the industry wasn't uh as such uh
when techn olog wasn't that much
involved what's your standpoint on that
topic yeah so I think that the
fraudulant activity um and as Tech
evolves I mean it has become rampant uh
it's it's a very serious problem it's
it's out of control um and I mean I
think in this
industry you know we really have to of
course technology plays a role but I
think it it kind of starts with
education and we need to make sure that
we are we are educated on what to look
for what are red flags we need to look
for and you know educate our team on um
but also you know with I guess how
technology and how our technology
specifically help combat that you know
first and foremost just kind of starting
in our own backyard we can do you know
the the two Factor authentication just
to log into your system we want to make
sure that there's not a bad actor trying
to log into your transport Pro system
and access your data um but you know I
think if you don't I think if you don't
integrate with
Solutions or integrate Solutions like my
carrier portal rmis you know some of
these others you are kind of opening
yourself up to to fraud um you know
those are companies that have
designed great platforms to help catch
Bad actors but then even further you
know I think we really have to look at
contact information um and so we can
document all that in transport Pro we
can document verified contacts that
we're working with and you know before
we dispatch um before we send a rate
confirmation out before we you know send
money to anybody we need to be really
checking um you know emails domains we
need to be checking phone numbers and
that basic contact information um you
know call the number and make sure that
you know Joe Smith is who he says he is
you know and I think it we still you
know we we have to come back to basics
on that too and and educate and and look
at that contact
information so basically
uh it comes to comes back to some
footwork that needs to be done if you
want to be safe I think some of it I I
think that um we do have to make sure
we're we're documenting that proper
contact information you know before I
release payment to
somebody um I'm going to call that
contact and and make sure that you know
if if I feel like that they have a red
flag I want to make sure that they are
who they say they are um but I think I
mean we've got things in place to really
help
um to help you see you know see that
there's so much technology on the market
now that is going to help you
immediately see those red flags but I do
think there has to be some kind of
fundamental level of education on what
to look
for I'm going to derail the conversation
from the topic just a little bit now
because uh there was something that has
happened in the previous week and that I
do believe that we need to mention
that's um d load board uh going GoLine
so to speak uh three times within uh
five working days and then um uh not
allowing uh anyone outside of you has
say to access the load
board without VPN right uh do you think
uh that those were some attacks that
they have um had and that they have
battled with against actually and do you
think that this uh restrictions from
their side will help somehow in fighting
fraud well I I really don't know um you
know what dat was exactly you know what
all they were dealing with there um and
so you know I don't know how much I can
speak on that but as far as you know do
I think that that's going to help
protect
broad I don't know I I personally think
that we need to be looking
at we need to be looking at uh
domains and where
these where the fraudulant activity is
coming from
um you know I mean I can't speak too
much on their
behalf noted noted uh well with the
revid of techn technological advancement
how does transfer Power Pro stay ahead
of the curve in terms of developing and
integrating New Market apps and
Technologies into your platform
yeah I mean our Dev team does a
fantastic job of just staying on top of
um you know industry Trends the latest
technology new
Integrations I think a lot of that
really comes from you know feedback from
our customers too right they're on the
front lines dealing with this stuff
every single day and so we like to to
talk to them we love to get their
feedback um I think that our customers
really help us continue to build the
product and you know continually evolve
continually make it better um but you
know we're always rolling out something
new you know we've got some exciting new
stuff coming up which I can't announce
today but um you know I mean that's
that's you know goes without saying
being a tech company right you have to
or you're going to go
stale definitely ever ever evolving
right and finally could you share some
SU success stories or case studies uh
that highlight how Transit Pro
technology helps has helped
Transportation companies improve
efficiency streamline operations and
enhance their overall business
performance yeah so I will just say one
of our one of our first customers
um they started out I believe with
somewhere around 30 employees and so
this will just go to show how adaptable
scalable and flexible the the system is
they started with somewhere around 30
employees and they've got over 800 today
and they've been with us the whole time
so you know they have
seen many you know efficiencies in in
many areas of the system I think a key
one for this particular customer was
around um that that paperwork processing
that was one thing that was really kind
of bogging them down and they had
several employees just doing paperwork
processing um so you know that would be
one example just to show you how much
they've grown but grown with transport
Pro you know we've grown with them um we
don't expect everybody to fit
into you know a perfect box we know that
every company is going to do things a
little bit differently and so we want to
you know if we can find a a way to to
help them do something a little bit
better um maybe they do change something
internally and that's okay but we don't
want to ask somebody to change their
business you know to fit into transport
gr let us grow with you um and you know
and so they've been with us since the
beginning uh we really hope to be that
sort of forever solution you know we
don't want you to feel like you have to
change in five years
again definitely that that that sounds
like true a great story well Kelly thank
you for your time and expertise it was
pleasure having you as a guest and I do
believe that everyone who Tunes in will
learn a lot about EMS and trucking
industry in general for all of you
