Transcripts
hi I'm Andrew and I'm Dave and we're the
IB English guys we're excited to be back
we're talking about a paper one text
this is from May 2024 that's right folks
this recent paper as well as all the
past papers of course can be found on
revision Village we've done a lot of
great work over there Mr Giles today
this text is an opinion article from ux
Collective which is an online newsletter
and blog uh that talks about user
experiences in technology yeah that's
right there it's you it aimed at
designers you think about a designer
they're wanting to be creative and
they're this is a really interesting
approach to discuss Chachi BT and how it
affects creativity that's right Mr J The
Guiding question for this text is as
follows how does the writer structure
this article to present the argument
what do we need to think about here oh
this is interesting I like this idea of
structure we're thinking about how the
writer has put together this this text
and from beginning to the middle to the
end so we're really trying to think
about how that argument is being laid
out out so they're asking us really to
almost do an outline of the article
itself and then deconstruct that while
always keeping your eye on the main
argument of course great now when we
look at this article right away I see uh
you know a large title headline subtitle
the author's name and and a big image so
structurally we're presented with some
very Visual and striking images to start
yeah that's right A lot of times opinion
articles will have that one image that
relates to the text and that's
interesting the headline for this
particular article is a radical opinion
on chat GPT I'm struck by the word
radical word radical means something
controversial something kind of that's
going to shape things up yeah I do like
that as well and the subtitle of course
says churn out every idea and then burn
it down I love that rhyming phrase of
churn and burn I think when you churn
something out it's this idea that it's
automated is coming out with without
much thought and then this rhyming word
to burn so take that automated generated
thing and then just Burn It To The
Ground I love that and this is his
argument this is his opinion and so a
lot of times opinion articles will tell
you what they're trying to convince Us
in the in the headline that's structural
that's interesting of course we have the
author's name and then we have a large
image of three Purple Cows now as
readers were somewhat confused by this
structural decision but it becomes
apparent and clear later in the article
but what are our first impressions when
we encounter this well purple cows are
unusual something kind of like that's
obviously creative that's been like
digitally enhanced that's that's that's
interesting but we also see three carbon
copies of the Purple Cow so this
creative idea has been copied so it's
making us think about a little less
original no there's three of them no
what that's right that's right okay now
let's get into the copy itself we see a
really start really clear introduction
uh and we see the first word is we we
need to talk about chaty BT I love that
inclusive language right away the writer
is decreasing that distance between
himself and the reader yeah that's right
this is again structurally he's really
introducing the topic and he's talking
about how that Ai and and Chachi BT but
also AI in general is shipping at
creative shipping away means it's kind
of eroding so it's kind of eroding
people in the creative industry yeah but
chipping is it implies that it's
happening sort of at a slow pace right
it's interesting we have that that
concept from our course transformation
uh and then we see the jux a position of
opportunities and headaches so we know
that this technology is transformative
it's having a huge impact on the work
that creatives do uh and there are both
positives and negatives as seen through
that ju supposition of those authorial
choices yeah I like that he's
acknowledging those those two things
then he talks in the next paragraph
about hey you know like lots of people
are ring it wholesale but then other
people are resisting it and so again
that's part of that that sort of you
know PR and cons and I'm sure it's
happening the you can the rigid
dichotomy the rigid dichotomy so I think
that's important and he's also framing
his argument he's saying there's a lot
of too much focus on how Ai and chat gbt
makes us more efficient saves us time
and money yeah now we're going to get to
his thesis and we see that high modality
phrase we should shift our thinking this
is his suggestion he's pushing he's
encouraging us to do something thing
then he identifies it as the problem so
it appears that this is going to be set
up as a problem solution structurally
type of yes that's right and part of
this paragraph We have great parallel
structure where he's giving us this idea
of it's a problem it's a challenge and
it's an opportunity so we see those sort
of fragmented phrases it's a really nice
way to talk about and that's part of the
part of the issue yeah and then he'll
follow that structural design throughout
the remainder of the piece now before he
can get to sort of the problem and
solution we need to give our readers
some context and background they might
not have a great great understanding of
artificial intelligence what's this next
paragraph and subtitle do for us yeah
this whole section subheading yeah this
subheading machine learning in a
nutshell it's a little bit colloquial
and and just he's kind of wrap it up and
he's trying to Define his terms and give
us background and context right right
that's important that's part of the
structure uh so we see this idea of how
computers are are sort of mimicking
human thought in a similar way uh and
they just want to give you some quick
some quick definitions about what
machine learning is again in the next
paragraph we see that that word churn
again that verb that's being repeated uh
what's happening here with this
impressive predictive content the way
it's being ched out yeah it's churning
out so much content so much output and
that's quite impressive and he's he's
actually drawing an analogy in a in a in
a situation to to social media and how
they're predicting um predictive engines
that's great so structurally he gives
you something that might be a bit
abstract for some thinkers then he gives
a tangible example about how this plays
out in your everyday social media world
I like right that's great and now he's
going to get towards his his idea about
creative machine learning should shake
us this should be alarming he's really
making us something that shakes us makes
us makes us alarming so this is Again
part of that problem yeah we see his
anecdotal evidence knowing that he has
played with this tool himself and again
staying with that dichotomy of of
positives and negatives he says he also
was impressed yet sadden so we see that
ju's position coming up again and then
we see an illusion to George Orwell Mr
Giles as a p quote Yeah George Orwell's
quote is interesting because he's
talking about if you've ever seen a
metaphor that's been printed don't use
it because that means you're not being
creative and original so it's the idea
of originality and this is I think
important for all of us to think about
chat GPT it takes away some of our
creativity and in um and originality
then Seth Goden comes into play Seth
Goden comes in and finally we get some
clarity on that those Purple Cows
apparently he has a Seth Goden of course
is a marketing Guru uh and so we have
that illusion provided for us but in his
Manifesto the Purple Cow he's basically
saying that hey you need to be original
and be creative to be remembered so this
idea that chat GPT and AI is stripping
this away from you because it can carbon
copy many Purple Cows if you have many
Purple Cows Mr Jiles You've Lost Your
originality that's great I love that
conditional sentence if you're not
remembered your identity is lost so you
got to be remembered and the way we're
remembered is to originality so the
clear that that clear idea and then he
has that dactic tone where he says see
chap gbt will be a threat to being
remarkable and original if it's not
Embrace in a radical way it's going back
to that that original argument we've got
to be radical that's important it is and
getting the concluding part of that
paragraph he says it's our job comma our
challenge it's almost like a little
positive phrase sitting there our job
our challenge to emphasize that to push
Beyond this idea and continue to be
creative and not just start carbon
copying things that are pseudo creative
yeah that's right and that's a great
segue to the next section which is the
last section which is a solution so we
see the problem but now we have to be
hey how do we how do we fix this Mr GES
this an opinion article an opinion
article without a solution is a rant
that's right he doesn't want a
structural rant he wants a problem and
here's my tangible solution yeah that's
great and so again he's saying get
getting radical with chat GPT I love how
that's that the unity of the word
radical is being carried through the
whole text and he's talking about hey
we've got to do something new and that
we have this this strong B up sees the
opportunity and streamline ideation I
like that ideation is creativity right
definitely good ideas now because we
want to emphasize a solution we see
structurally the writer has gone to bold
faced here and again they're repeating
that phrase churn and burn uh and then
we have some imperatives because we're
into the solution we want to be a bit
more commanding so we want you to
embrace review throw challenge now we're
giving some orders they're very subtle
the writer has established trust we can
take this command now but he's telling
us what to do yeah and in a nutshell
he's really telling us to like hey let
it provide you a lot of information but
get rid of it because these are these
are your original ideas this is good for
students to think about hey we can use
chat gbt but we can't we've got to come
up with original IDE jobs we need to
find a place for that content and park
it there right I love that that
colloquial phrase park it there right so
you can use it for your drum beak
content sort of the rhythmic everyday
flow that doesn't require a lot of
creativity and originality but when you
get to the good stuff the creative stuff
you better Park chat GPT Mr Giles and
use your old bra yeah I love that so
then you know he's again giving that
call call to action lastly just saying
hey we got to hold ourselves hold a
mirror up to ourselves as creators we've
got to be creative and it's our it's our
burden to do that so this is really a
kind of a powerful circular structure
with the text yeah Mr JS in closing and
when we think about the structure of
this piece you know the writer clearly
gives us an introduction they Define the
problem they give us some background
information they explore the problem
they provide a solution a very cleverly
organized opinion piece yeah that's
right so in our next video we're going
to talk about the sample response it's
going to use that exact idea about the
structure and talk about all those
elements that we talked about thanks so
much for for watching and stay tuned for
the next video which is our sample
response thanks guys
