Transcripts

play00:00

- Today, we are going to answer the question,

play00:02

what is a vision statement?

play00:04

And by the end of the video,

play00:05

you will get the opportunity to draft your own.

play00:08

So let's get into the details.

play00:10

(harsh rock music)

play00:14

This is the second video in a three-part series

play00:17

about mission, vision, and values.

play00:20

To briefly recap the first video,

play00:22

a mission statement explains what an organization is doing

play00:25

in the present tense, in terms of its job description,

play00:28

its assignment.

play00:30

Mission statements focus on the day-to-day business

play00:33

of an organization.

play00:34

In contrast, a vision statement looks at the future.

play00:37

My working definition of a vision statement

play00:39

is a concise statement that explains

play00:42

what the organization wants the future to look like.

play00:45

It describes where the organization wants to go,

play00:48

its overarching, long-term goal,

play00:51

and sometimes, where it wants to take its clients,

play00:54

customers, and the community it serves.

play00:57

One of the best vision statements I have ever heard

play01:00

comes from John F. Kennedy

play01:01

when he was talking about the United States vision

play01:04

for the space program.

play01:06

JFK gave a speech in 1961, where he said that

play01:10

"This nation should commit itself to achieving the goal

play01:13

"before the decade is out of landing a man on the moon

play01:17

"and returning him safely to earth."

play01:20

And the majority of people listening to him

play01:23

didn't think it was even possible to go to the moon,

play01:26

let alone do it in the decade.

play01:28

If I have my history right,

play01:29

the first American went into orbit for the very first time

play01:33

just a few weeks before the made this speech.

play01:36

But spoiler alert, we did it in mid-July, 1969.

play01:40

We successfully landed on the moon.

play01:42

The space program went from never having a person orbit

play01:46

to landing on the moon in less than 10 years.

play01:48

That's the power of a compelling vision.

play01:52

Let's bring this back down to earth for a while

play01:54

and talk about some organizational vision statements.

play01:57

Let's see if these organizations

play01:59

are actually working toward accomplishing

play02:01

these long-term goals.

play02:03

First, let's look at Netflix.

play02:05

Their vision statement is

play02:06

"Becoming the world's best

play02:08

"global entertainment distribution service."

play02:10

That's their original vision statement

play02:12

from CEO, Reed Hastings.

play02:14

And I haven't looked at the statistics

play02:16

on how Netflix competitors are doing, but at face value,

play02:21

it does seem as if Netflix

play02:22

is certainly trying to accomplish the vision

play02:25

of being the best global entertainment distribution service.

play02:29

Let's look at Nike, the athletic shoe and apparel company.

play02:33

And if you are expecting to see a vision statement

play02:36

that says, "Just do it", then that's not it.

play02:38

That's their marketing tagline.

play02:41

That's the way the company puts itself out in the public,

play02:44

but it's not the same as the vision statement,

play02:46

its long-term goal as an organization.

play02:49

Their actual vision statement is

play02:50

"To bring inspiration and innovation

play02:53

"to every athlete in the world."

play02:55

So as a customer of Nike,

play02:56

I love this idea that they wanna inspire and innovate

play03:00

for every athlete.

play03:02

Again, I don't know about the sales figures,

play03:03

but it seems to me that they are pursuing this vision.

play03:07

I was reading a news story a while back

play03:09

about how a prototype Nike shoe

play03:11

was giving a runner an unfair advantage in a race

play03:15

because of the innovative aspects of the shoe.

play03:18

So it seems to me at face value

play03:19

that Nike really is pursuing innovation and inspiration.

play03:24

Microsoft has a famous vision statement from back in the day

play03:27

when they were first growing.

play03:29

One of their earliest vision statements

play03:31

was to have a computer on every desk and in every home,

play03:35

and I've heard it also added

play03:36

to the end of that, running Microsoft software.

play03:39

I don't know if that ending

play03:41

was ever officially part of the literal vision statement,

play03:44

but it was at least implied that Microsoft

play03:47

would be creating the software for those computers.

play03:49

In some ways, it reminds me

play03:51

of Kennedy's moon landing vision.

play03:53

At the time, in the 1980s,

play03:55

a computer on every desk, in every home seemed impossible,

play03:59

but Microsoft, essentially, accomplished its goal.

play04:03

Southwest Airlines vision statement

play04:04

is "To be the world's most loved, most efficient,

play04:07

"and most profitable airline."

play04:10

So I'm a college professor

play04:12

and this vision statement earns an A plus.

play04:14

They have been the most consistently profitable airline

play04:17

for four decades, and they have always been at

play04:21

or very near the top

play04:22

of all the various customer service ratings

play04:24

that airlines get.

play04:26

They have been in the midst of achieving that vision

play04:28

for decades now.

play04:30

Sometimes, a vision statement isn't really spelled out

play04:33

in such a concise way.

play04:35

Sometimes there's a statement that's more like a paragraph.

play04:39

Other times, they don't even label it a vision statement,

play04:42

but most organizations that are established

play04:44

do have some kind of explanation

play04:47

of where they want to go in the future

play04:48

in one way or another.

play04:50

Oyster is a luxury sailboat maker that we talked about

play04:54

in the first video on mission statements.

play04:56

And on their website,

play04:57

they don't label their statement a vision statement,

play05:00

but it's pretty obvious that that's what it is.

play05:02

Their statement has a heading that says,

play05:04

"Sailing into the future."

play05:06

And that says that the company won

play05:08

the Bluewater Cruiser of the Year award in 2019,

play05:13

and that is a pedigree or award

play05:15

that they hope to see repeated in the future.

play05:18

The implication is that their vision for the future

play05:21

is to continue to be an award-winning company.

play05:25

Again, they don't call it a vision statement,

play05:27

but that's the company's goal,

play05:28

to be the world's best of its kind.

play05:31

Just like some mission statements we looked at

play05:34

in the last video,

play05:36

some organizations make vision statements

play05:38

in a really concise sentence,

play05:40

but other organizations write it out

play05:42

in a short paragraph or two.

play05:44

Wegmans is an award-winning grocery store chain.

play05:47

On their website, they talk about what they believe

play05:50

and they put the words, goals, vision in parentheses,

play05:53

and they write out the rest in a paragraph form.

play05:56

In the middle of that though, you can see that their goal

play06:00

is to be the best grocery store chain

play06:03

at serving the needs of our customers.

play06:05

So it's a little vague at best,

play06:07

but in the context of the rest of the language,

play06:10

it all makes sense.

play06:11

And if you've ever shopped at Wegmans like me,

play06:14

then you already know it's the best.

play06:16

And I'm biased, of course,

play06:18

but Wegmans really does have an excellent reputation

play06:23

as an employer and also as a place to shop.

play06:26

Now let's transition to talk about

play06:28

how you can craft a vision statement for yourself

play06:31

or for your organization.

play06:32

And if you're the leader of any kind of team

play06:35

or organization,

play06:36

then you can craft a vision statement

play06:37

about where you want to take that team.

play06:40

Start by asking questions about the kind of long-term goal

play06:45

that would provide an inspirational vision and direction.

play06:49

Think about what the team organization could become

play06:52

in the next five years or 10 years.

play06:55

A vision should be ambitious,

play06:57

but yet, at least hypothetically possible.

play07:00

So I'll tell you my vision statement

play07:01

for this channel and my videos.

play07:03

I would like to become the top independent YouTube channel

play07:07

and online class creator for communication,

play07:10

public speaking, and leadership skills.

play07:12

There are whole organizations out there

play07:14

that have hundreds of employees that do this type of work,

play07:18

but I want to be the top individual doing this,

play07:22

and it's a very ambitious vision statement, but why not?

play07:26

It's hypothetically possible,

play07:28

and that's the kind of vision

play07:29

that will help me stay motivated.

play07:32

But let's turn back to you.

play07:33

What's your long-term vision for the future for your team?

play07:37

And by the way, I found that

play07:39

a vision statement for your own career

play07:42

can also be really helpful,

play07:43

apart from the specific organization that you might work at.

play07:46

And it works in the same way.

play07:48

A personal vision statement gives you an aspirational goal,

play07:53

a clear picture of the future that you can strive for

play07:56

and clarity about where you want to take your career

play08:00

or your life.

play08:01

It can help guide your decisions,

play08:03

so you keep aiming at that future.

play08:06

And when you're know where you're going,

play08:07

it's easier to stay focused and stay on track.

play08:10

As mentioned, this is a three-part series.

play08:12

The first video is on mission statements,

play08:14

this one's on vision, and the next one is on values.

play08:17

Now I'll post all those links to these videos

play08:20

in the description below as soon as they're all complete.

play08:23

Thanks, God bless, and I will see you soon.
