🏸 Mastering the Art of Smashes in Badminton
This paragraph introduces the video's focus on the five types of smashes in badminton and their appropriate usage. Greg and Jenny, the professional players, explain when not to use the standard smash, such as when the opponent has lifted the shuttle to the back line or when the player is off-balance. They emphasize the importance of waiting for the right opportunity and provide tips for improving smash technique, including body rotation for power and the sequence of body movements for a powerful hit. They also introduce the stick smash, explaining its differences from the standard smash, such as less power but more control and deceptiveness due to slower swing speed and a snap at the end of the swing.
🤸♂️ Advanced Smash Techniques: Jump and Jump Out Smashes
The second paragraph delves into the jump smash and its benefits, such as a higher contact point and an intimidating presence on the court. The paragraph outlines the prerequisites for executing a jump smash, including a high lift from the opponent and sufficient time to jump. It also covers the jump out smash, which is used to intercept flat lifts before they pass by. The paragraph provides tips for both smashes, such as starting the jump smash sideways and the importance of a fast swing speed for the jump out smash. Additionally, it touches on the importance of strength and explosivity for these advanced techniques and suggests weight training for improvement. The paragraph concludes with a brief mention of the backhand smash, its usage, and tips for maximizing its power, including grip technique and muscle engagement.

Did you know that there are five different types of Smashes in Badminton and they all
have specific times of when they should and shouldn't be played? Well in this video we're
going to show you all five types of smashes and give you our best tips on how to do these shots
successfully and also when to use them! And if you're new here we're Greg and Jenny two
professional players releasing regular videos on all things badminton so let's get straight into smash
number one first we have the standard smash and we're going to start by sharing when you shouldn't
use this because a lot of people often get it wrong so you shouldn't hit this smash when your
opponent has lifted onto the back line or your off balance and out of position this is because
if your opponents have good defence it could get you and your partner if you're playing doubles into trouble!
Instead you should wait for the right opportunity on a shorter lift to use your smash
Our first tip to improve your smash technique and maximize your power is to do
with your preparation try to be around half a meter behind the shuttle this is because a lot
of power comes from rotating your body forwards into the shot if you strike the shuttle slightly
behind you then your momentum won't be going forwards which reduces your power think of
it like a punch in boxing you can create a lot more power using the rotation and momentum of
your body compared to just using your arm or even moving backwards as you punch!
That's not to say you can't hit a good smash off balance though but you do need very good power and placement
and it ideally needs to be a winner as you'll probably have a slower recovery and our second
tip is to do with the hitting action you need to rotate your hips torso and shoulders in a very
fast sequence followed by your elbow forearm and then wrist this rotation and sequence is
a huge part of creating good power in your Smash and we break this all down in a lot
more detail in our step-by-step smash tutorial which will Link in the description below if you
want to check it out after this. Our second type of smash is the stick smash and there
are four important differences between this and the standard smash we've just shown the
first is that the stick smash has less power than the standard smash so why would you choose to play it?
Well difference two is that you can hit the stick smash from a variety of positions
when you're in a good position or unlike the standard smash when you're actually taking it a little later
Three is that you don't use your whole body to rotate in the stick smash which
means that you're more in control of your body so you can hit more accurate shots and recover better
Four is the Big Technical difference as we've said you use your whole body to
rotate in the standard smash and your elbow moves forwards and down as you strike the
shuttle but in the stick smash you have a slower swing speed and then when your
elbow is roughly in line with your body it almost stops and stays in the same position
you then use your forearm and squeeze your grip to snap your wrist over the top of the shuttle
This slower swing speed helps make the shot deceptive as your opponents think you're
going to play a drop or a clear but for this to work you need to be relaxed in your arm and
grip if you're really stiff and tense then you can't create this stick or snap to add the power
which completely ruins the shot the third type of Smash is the jump smash this is one that's
really difficult to master but everyone wants to do there are two main benefits of using a jump
smash as opposed to the other four smashes one is that you have a higher contact point with the
shuttle and can create a better angle on your shot and two is that you can look more threatening and scare your opponents!
Our first tip isn't really a tip it's more of a must you should only use this
type of smash when your opponents have hit a high lift and you have time to get behind the shuttle
and then jump up to it if you're behind it but don't have the time to jump then you can use the
standard or stick smash instead and our second tip for you is that you need to start the jump smash
by facing sidewards you then go down into a half squat to be able to jump up as high as possible as
you push off from the ground you should open out your chest and pull your racket arm back as much
as you can which will help you generate a fast racket swing speed and therefore a more powerful
smash okay that was the third time type of Smash and if you're enjoying this video so far make sure

the jump out smash. In the previous jump smash that we've just shown you jump up but for this as the
name suggests you jump out to the side you can use this smash on both the forehand and round the
head side and you would use it when your opponents have hit a flat lift and you jump out to intercept the
shuttle before it goes too far past you and you have to take the shuttle late. This shot can be
incredibly effective in both singles and doubles and at all levels of the game but you can only do
it if you have good strength and explosivity and the round the head jump out smash in particular
requires strong muscles to be able to absorb your landing and prevent injuries yes so if you want
to improve your ability to jump explosively and also recover out of this jump then we'd recommend
doing badminton specific weights training and we actually have eight different programmes with printable PDFs
and video demonstrations for every exercise available on our website so we'll include a
link in the description below if you want to check them out and improve your game a key tip for both
the forehand and round the head jump out smash is that unlike the other smashes we've shared so far
for this you actually keep your hips facing the net this is because it's a flat lift so you don't
have enough time to do a full body rotation but you do need to get your elbow back as this helps
you still have a fast swing speed! The fifth type of Smash is the backhand smash this is typically
more common in singles but also maybe for lazy players who automatically turn to take a backhand
and it's used when the lift is short so you can still play an effective shot and you might be
wondering, why would you just do a jump out smash instead? Well you do it when you've either already
turned your feet to play a backhand or the shuttle has already gone past you. We have two key tips to
maximize your backhand smash power first although you might think you should be in a backhand grip
to hit a backhand smash that's actually not right you need to be in a bevel grip which allows you to
create maximum rotation and therefore power and second to generate even more power you need to
use the muscles in the back of your shoulder which you've now developed thanks to our weights programmes
you then need to rotate your forearm like this and not like this so the bottom half of the forearm this
enables you to generate that whip and an important point is that you need to be really relaxed until
the last millisecond which is actually a key part of all five smashes we've shown in this video!
And whilst it's great to have all five smashes in your arsenal we think the most important ones
to learn are the standard smash and the jump out smash because these are the ones you should use
in every game yeah and if you want some advice on your smash we're preparing a video where we
