Outlines

Highlights

this is my back exercise tier list I
will be ranking back exercises based on
my 10 years of experience with
bodybuilding I will not be pulling out
any useless scientific papers to rate
these exercises as I believe that actual
real life experience is way more
valuable than any scientific paper ever
created we will start with all the
vertical exercises which are basically
different pullup and pull down
variations then we will go over all the
horizontal exercises which are all the
row variations this will ensure that you
know which exercises are the best for
targeting your back from all the angles
one exercise that I want to address
right at the start of the video is the
deadlift if your goal is just to build
muscle there is no reason to have the
deadlift in your routine because the
amount of fatigue it causes is so big in
contrast with how little gains you get
in a turn that it's just simply not
worth it so this is why I will put it in
the D tier this myth that the deadlift
is a Musto exercise to build muscle
needs to die and if you think that I'm
pulling this out of my butt then you can
go ask anyone who is knowledgeable in
this industry and they will tell you the
same thing but still if you enjoy doing
the deadlift and you feel like it works
for you then keep doing it I always
praise that you should do the exercises
that you enjoy and that work for you
specifically but definitely weigh out
the pros and cons I will give you all
the information that you will need but
in the end you got to make the decision
yourself anyway now that we got that out
of the way let's start with the vertical
exercises pullup is the king of back
exercises there is so many pull-up
variations that you can do the classic
pull-up the chin up or the pull-up with
neutral grip and so many more all of
them are amazing this goes straight to
the Ester no debate if you can't do a
pull-up or if you can do just a couple
of reps you should definitely focus on
getting better at pull-ups there is a
couple of things that you can do to get
better at pull-ups you can let someone
hold your legs use a band do negative
reps or use the assisted pull-up machine
and one more thing that could also help
you is to start with chinups instead of
pull-ups because they are a little bit
easier to do trust me doing pull-ups is
the key to unlocking a wi B the other
type of vertical exercises are various
types of pull Downs the most used
variation is the lead pull down similar
to the pull-up the lead pull down also
has a lot of different variations that
you can use white and close grip
underhand or overhand grip and also a
lot of cool attachments that you can use
I'm not going to rank every variation
separately because it will take an hour
and there is not that big of a
difference between them my favorite
attachment personally is the close grip
one I would recommend you to do the
variation that you feel the most
comfortable with you know when you feel
like oh yeah I was made for this the
light pull down is an amazing exercise
overall but the pull-up does a little
bit better job so this is a tier for me
now let's have a look at the straight
arm pull pull down I feel like that most
people either love or hate this exercise
nothing in between and I can see why you
can either feel a great contraction or
you are just like why am I doing this
the straight arm pull down can be a
great light Builder but it's no match
for the pull up or the pull down that's
why it's going to go to the B tier the
last vertical exercise that I'm going to
rank is the single on pull down I enjoy
this exercise a lot but you have to be
careful you got to make sure that you
are still using challenge weight but
don't twist my words I don't want you to
Ego lift but if you can do like 30 plus
reps you should definitely add some
weight to make sure that you are just
not playing around and this goes for
every exercise filling out is great but
you also got to put in some real work
and lift some real weight it's like when
you play with your Johnson it feels good
but that's also not building any muscle
you know hell if used correctly the
single arm pull down is worth doing but
only if you are more advanced
this exercise should not be used by
beginners so considering all of this I
will put it in the B tier this concludes
all the vertical exercises now let's
have a look at the horizontal exercises
let's kick it off with the classic
barbell row if you had to choose one row
variation to do for the rest of your
life this exercise would be the one this
is basically the equivalent of the bench
press but for the back and the same goes
for the dumble row I'm not going to tell
you that either one of these variations
is better than the other one it all
comes down to personal preference I for
example prefer the barbell variation
because it feels more stable and I have
more control over the weight both the
barbell and the dumbler row are eser
exercises now let's take a look at
something goofy it's the Renegade row
this is the exercise that you would see
on a follow along workout on the VHS
from the '90s I bet that most of you
don't even know what VHS is or what the
Renegade row is and we should keep it
that way the Renegade row is as
effective as using a VHS player in 2023
so it goes straight to the science based
here next up is the tar row you have for
sure seen clips of Ronnie and Arnold
doing this exercise it's one of the OG
exercises that is not that popular
nowadays but this doesn't mean that it's
a bad exercise I personally like this
exercise a lot but there are other row
variations that I like even more which
I'm going to show you in a second some
people might argue that the tar row is
better than the barble row but I don't
think so but it's pretty close to being
one of the best throwing exercises it's
a very solid a TI for me next up we have
the inverted row before I say anything
what do you think about this exercise do
you think that it's good or bad all
right now let me reveal my answer the
way that I feel about this exercise is
that it's kind of like a push-up for the
back which means that it struggles from
the similar problems as the push-up you
will quickly get to the point where your
body weight simply won't provide enough
resistance and then you got to start
putting plates on your chest or buy a
weighted vest or just simply make the
exercise harder in some way which is
just making things way too complicated
for no reason there is so many great row
variations that I don't see a reason why
you would go through all the struggle to
make the inverted row work if this was a
calisthenic steel list this would be a
completely different story it would be
an easy s steer plus you could use
gymnastic rings to do the inverted row
which would make it even better but for
the so reason that there are better row
variations that let you use more weight
more efficiently while also being more
convenient to do the inverted row goes
into the C here I'm sure that you will
recognize this next exercise it's the
seated cable row honestly I love all the
exercises that use cables the constant
stretch is just simply amazing I would
say that this is the perfect exercise to
do as the second throwing exercise in
your workout so you can for example do
three sets of barble rows and after that
you can do three sets of seated cable
rows in a little bit higher up range
than you did the barell rows with I see
the seated cable row as more of a
supplementary exercise you will still
need something like a tar row or a
barbell or dumbler Row in your routine
but even though I see it as a
supplementary exercise it fulfills this
role very well that's why it goes in the
a tier next up is the chest supported
row or any other chest supported
exercise for that matter chest supported
rows are amazing for two reasons the
first one is that you are taking other
body parts out of the equation which
lets you focus just on your back without
any limitations and the second reason is
that you simply cannot cheat it's
impossible this might give you a good
reality check you might think that you
can row a ton of weight but when you
actually do a chest supported row you
will suddenly remember what the word
humility means so the chest supported
row goes into Ester now let me show you
my two favorite row variations the first
out of the two exercise exer sizes is
The Meadows row I love the weighted
stretch that you can get on this
exercise but it can be very tricky to
set up if your gym doesn't have the land
mine attachment plus it's a unilateral
exercise which means that you need to do
it one side at a time which will take
you a lot more time to do and in this
day and age the time is of the essence
this breaks my heart because I
absolutely love this exercise but I got
to put this exercise in the beat here
and the last of the horizontal exercises
and my absolute time favorite exercise
is the seal row this is basically
another spin-off of a chest supported
row when you do this exercise with a
pause at the top of each rep this
exercise is an absolute killer and you
don't even have to use a lot of weight I
personally like to add a couple of my
reps when I'm doing the seal row if you
would like to see a video on that let me
know in the comments below when you
combine the fact that you cannot cheat
on any of your reps and you can add a
post at the top of each rep and sprinkle
in a couple of my reps you are in for a
world of pain your face will be red and
you will most likely see stars but we
all know that that's one of the best
feelings ever would I recommend this to
beginners definitely not but if you have
been Lifting for a couple of years
definitely give it a shot I simply
cannot emphasize how much I love this
exercise s tier so this was my back
exercise tier list do you agree with my
rankings what would you change and are
there any exercises that you think I
missed let me know what you think in the
comments below and if you are interested

exercises check out my website link in
