Ukrainian government asking for this

American policy citing a variety of
reasons from the weapons long range
would allow strikes into Russian
territory along with concerns that the
US didn't have enough to send without
seriously compromising its ability to
fend off other threats like China how
and why was this system developed our
defense analysts correct that the US
might not have enough missiles to handle
emerging threats in the coming years and
why is the US government changing its
mind about sending the weapon to Ukraine
after over a year of denials I'm your
average infantryman at Cappy Army on
Instagram let's find out the Pentagon
just briefed me that an alien invasion
will land in 1 hour and their only
weakness is Tiny 1/3 scale mini goat
guns I accept this Mission sir I'll
destroy those ugly disgusting alien
faces with this FN SCAR last time I
checked the Geneva Convention doesn't
cover UFOs so it looks like war crimes
are back on the menu there's one thing I
must warn you about Cappy these aliens
they're not ugly in fact they're very uh
how do I say this they're they're sexy
aliens I'm sure they're not my type
Commander oh dear God that is one hunky
alien that's right Cappy these aliens
wield the power of Seduction fortunately
go guns are the only thing that these
aliens find more beautiful than their

aliens we were going to conquer your

to get some of those sexy goat guns just
click the link in the description or the
pin comment below goat gun is proudly
turning a luring aliens into gun
enthusiast since since well now take a
look at this huge missile loaded into
the atacam that missile weighs 227 kg or
500 lb the m270 conventional Loadout has
two pods with six missiles each but at
13 ft in length and 22 in in diameter
the MGM 140 takes up an entire pod by
itself meaning an m270 can only carry
two attacks in instead of six regular
rocket artillery it's so big when it's a
unitary bomb like this it has a kill
radius of about 260 ft or 80 M according
to my average infantryman math that's
60% larger than a55 artillery shell the
atacam was first made famous during
Operation Desert Storm it's a ground
launched guided ballistic missile that
can be fired from either the m270 or
m142 high Mars launch vehicle the
Washington Post reported that they
estimate the US Army has
1,486 atacam in their Arsenal it's an
oddly specific number 364 are armed with
cluster Munitions and the rest are
unitary bombs but how accurate are those
numbers I'm not sure because the
Pentagon isn't exactly releasing
official estimates right now on their
atacam inventory the exact numbers
withheld for national security reasons
that sounds accurate though when you
consider that the US actually terminated
the atacam program in 2007 because the
costs were too high to justify at the
time remember this was back when the
focus of the US military was on
counterinsurgency warfare and the atacam
had limited use there this means no new
atacam missiles were added to the US
inventory between 2007 and today however
the service life extension program did
refurbish older missiles into current
operational versions that didn't start
until 2016 and renew missiles didn't
reach the us until 2018 around 4,000
attack of missiles of various types were
produced by locked Martin in total minus
the 600 that were fired in Iraq but that
doesn't mean that the US has 3,400 left
over because missile systems actually
degrade over time the chemical compounds
and Rockets Motors explosives hydraulic
systems they get old and become
ineffective over time its reported shelf
life is 10 years so that could mean that
the US only operational missiles that
they have might be whatever was
refurbished and delivered by locked
Martin since 2018 which does make 1486
sound about right that's a very limited
Supply and already it's in use by eight
us allies with at least six other
countries in the process of acquiring
the atacam for themselves so everyone
wants more Munitions of this variety the
weird part though is that locked Martin
still manufactures the ATT back a
missile in 2022 alone the company
produced 500 missiles but all of them
were already destined for foreign buyers
Australia's order in 2022 is worth
around $385 million in US and they just
received their first delivery Morocco
signed a contract in April of 2023 worth
an even greater 524 million with money
like that on the line no country is
going to place their order on hold for
charity no matter how much they support
Ukrainian Independence
it's not a simple matter of increasing
production either a 2020 fact sheet from
locked shows the atacam system has 134
different suppliers in 29 different
states 65 of which are small businesses
Supply chains like that mean that every
single subcontractor has to meet the new
production schedule or bottlenecks start
appearing what that means is that it
doesn't do locked or Ukraine any good to
boost factory production by 10 or 20%
when the company that makes a critical
microprocessor can't deliver a single
extra computer chip the weapons Origins
tell us a lot about how it'll be used in
Eastern Europe today the program that
would become the Army tactical missile
system started with a major shift in
Doctrine in the middle of the Cold War
the Soviet Union and Warsaw packed
armies vastly outnumbered the US and
NATO forces in Europe this meant early
NATO Cold War defense plans against the
potential invasion of Western Europe
were based on using tactical nuclear
weapons to stop the tide of mass Soviet
formations wow that doesn't sound good
can we I don't know maybe invent I don't
know a less terrible alternative by the
mid 1970s technology had changed enough
that the US and NATO redesigned their
defensive framework into a new war
fighting Doctrine called AirLand Battle
that didn't just depend on nuclear
Annihilation AirLand Battle was a direct
counter to the Soviet own Doctrine
called Deep battle the Soviet way of war
with this deep battle plan was to use
their Superior numbers in waves the
first Soviet wave applied pressure
across the entire front line they would
identify weak points in the line and
then send a second wave of elite units
to force a breakthrough at those
vulnerable points once a breakthrough
was achieved a second or third wave
would exploit the Gap and drive through
the US military's rear that doesn't
sound right this would quickly collapse
the rest of the US military's defense
like a deck of cards okay so how do you
counter that plan a key factor in NATO's
AirLand Battle Doctrine was to paralyze
the soviet's second wave within air and
more importantly missile strike the
original production run of the attacka
missiles were an estimated
2,500 many of which were originally
configured in the cluster bomb
specification because they were thought
to the most effective way against the
Soviet Army which would outnumber them
the first version of the missile known
as the M39 block 1 could deliver 950
bomblets 165 km away since then these
Munitions were refitted to unitary
single bombs that are more effective
against command centers each missile
costs over $1.5 million it's one of the
longest range and hardest hitting
weapons in the Army's Arsenal these long
range ground launch missile strikes
would allow time for NATO reinforcements
to reach potential breakthrough zones
the plan was to hit the Soviet Logistics
hubs command and control centers or
massed armor formations behind the lines
this way overwhelming air power could
stop the incoming attack in its tracks
the US military calls this concept the
second Echelon shrike this must have
been before the Army shoehorn the word
tactical into everything
okay so now we understand the reasons
for why the atacam was developed but who
are you going to call to actually create
this thing the development was a
challenging process that almost failed
several times enter the defense Advanced
research project agency or Dara for
short it's an unassuming innocent
looking Building located in Arlington
Virginia that has created some of the
world's most insane technology DARPA
launched the assault breaker pilot
program in
1978 assault breaker's goal wasn't to
develop a specific missile but instead
it was meant to create the advanced
sensors Radars and guidance Electronics
this foundational Tech would transform
simple rocket artillery into true
Precision guided Munitions in fact the
$155 million program led to many
innovations that the US military takes
for granted today the most important
results for missile development were the
ring laser gyroscope and a digital strap
down inertial guidance system okay what
what what does all that mean think of it
like a fancy version of Counting how
long you've traveled at a constant speed
to plot your distance traveled except
way more complicated than that because
it keeps track of altitude Direction and
angle the test missile using just these
guidance Technologies landed within 25 M
of the target after launching from 64 km
away Pro proving long range missile Tech
was within reach the 1980s was the rise
of Corporations and buzzwords like
Synergy in March of 1981 the Department
of Defense wanted a piece of all this
Synergy action they decided to merge the
Army and Air Force missile programs into
one project together in theory the Army
and Air Force working together is great
for keeping cost down and reducing
redundancy but in practice this idea of
synergy doesn't always work the reason
is because the Air Force had very
different design priorities than the
army they wanted to make the missile fit
in the Bombay of a B-52 for instance the
two branches ended up fighting to get
their priorities on the drawing board it
culminated with a design Choice by the
air force that they wanted a stealth
missile and so they classified the
entire project above the level that most
army officers could even access the Air
Force basically shut the door tied up a
sign that said only cool kids loud in
august 19 1984 it became clear that the
joint missile just wasn't going to work
so the project was split into two
separate Services the Army was free to
do as they please they were like dogs
let loose so in November 1990 the
production contracts for the atacam was
drawn up but they hit another snag the
company LTV lost one of their
subcontractors and LTV was the main
producer of the atacam so the
subcontractor that they lost was called
singer Corporation singer Corp was the
subcontractor for the control actuation
system in the atacam rocket but they
went out of business just a few months
into the initial production run if LTV
couldn't find a replacement vendor for
the part soon the delay might cost the
firm the fixed price contract that they
got and it would risk bankruptcy for the
entire conglomerate the LTV program
manager Bud Laughlin quickly found a
replacement in Simmons Precision motion
control they physically moved to their
Factory in New Jersey for 6 months to
ensure the assembly line change over
went smoothly after all the research and
production headaches the atacam was
finally accepted into the army as the
MGM 140 in 1991 but all this goes to
show just how difficult these missiles
are to manufacture and produce and why
so few of them exist today atacam is
often compared to Tactical ballistic
missiles like the Russian iscandar
system or the Chinese DF system but the
American system has a few tricks up its
sleeve that sets it apart for one most
ballistic missiles like the Russian
isander Chinese DF series requires their
own dedicated transporter erector launch
vehicles that are easy to identify and
track by the enemy I'm sure you probably
recognize its silhouette instantly the
American atacam on the other hand was
designed to fit into the existing m270
multiple launch rocket system and even
uses a cover that looks exactly like the
standard six Circle rocket lid this bit
of deception makes it difficult to
identify which launcher might have an
attack them inside and which might have
regular rocket artillery both vehicles
have an integrated winch to speed reload
within 3 to 5 minutes the deceptive
launcher setup isn't just to protect the
missiles either if the enemy doesn't
know where the attack a missile might
come from they can't map out the systems
max range to include in their battle
plans attacks gained its Fame during the
Gulf War when its first 32 missiles
produced were all fired and they had a
reported kill rate of 100% they were so
popular among the troops they nicknamed
it AT&T after the Telecom company and
their slogan Reach Out And Touch someone
the first version only used inertial
navigation for its guidance system and
had an effective Precision range of
about 50 m at max range already
impressive for late 1980s technology
especially when you consider that the
the Contemporary Soviet OTR 21 had 150 M
accuracy at much shorter range of 70 km
in 1996 the block 1A upgrades added GPS
guidance to the missiles which brought
the error radius down to less than 25 M
because of the improved Precision the
payload weight was cut in half improving
the range to 300 km LTV sold its missile
components to locked Martin in 1992
who've been the prime contractor for the
attacka missile ever since the attacka
missiles would continue to improve
through several variants in the 1990s
and early 2000s they had a different
fuse option for instance including a
type with guided anti-armor submunitions
called the brilliant anti-tank
submunition the bat variant was
cancelled in 2002 though and the Army
began phasing out the cluster variants
of the atacam in favor of unitary
Warheads the improved attaka missiles
would be given another chance to shine
during operation Iraqi Freedom 450
missiles were launched over the course
of the operation by 2015 560 attacka
missiles had been fired in combat while
originally designed as a defensive
weapon to disrupt Warsaw pack
reinforcements its offensive value was
also clear so why would this be useful
in Eastern Europe today first let's get
the concern of fear out of the way a
statement by the Kremlin on September 26
2023 said that the delivery of atacam
would make no difference on the
battlefield which is a departure from
their usual threats of nuclear
apocalypse so we all can breathe easy
that we're going to live another day it
has a much higher speed than most cruise
missiles so the atacam flies at Mach
three or more Storm Shadow and air
launched cruise missiles that have been
used to great effect by Ukraine so far
take about 15 minutes to travel 2 150 km
atacam can do that in under 5 minutes
think about it it opens up a a lot more
options for engaging time sensitive
targets it limits the defensive measures
that the enemy can take it will
seriously threaten any Russian Artillery
battery that opens fire without attack
thems Ukraine's Western donated rocket
artillery like the high Mars is
basically fighting with one hand behind
its back Ukrainian intelligence officer
bonov had this to say regarding the
current Gap in Ukraine's artillery range
quote the Russians just Place command
posts and other things beyond our
current range so we don't have anything
to reach them there and the situation is
the same with Russian Aviation at the
airfields fighting Russian Aviation
using air defense systems is very costly
and ineffective Aviation should be taken
out at the air base this missile will
put way more enemy command centers into
range so why does a military need
attacks if they already have similar
range Storm Shadow
missiles storm Shadows have limitations
of Their Own by virtue of being air
launched cruise missiles it takes time
to fuel prep and plan a flight mission
for an aircraft limiting the range and
rate at which air launched missiles can
be fired planes have to be maintained
after each flight and Pilots need rest
too meaning only the highest priority
targets are worthy of a strike Mission
Ukrainian Pilots can't launch their
Storm Shadow missiles directly from the
front line either this reduces the 250
km range by that extra distance ground
launched missiles like atacam have a lot
less involved in planning and launching
a strike not to say it's easy but the
high Mars launch Vehicles basically a
glorified truck chassis which is a lot
less maintenance and training intensive
than a jet play the new stuff though for
all its capability and past performance
the atacam is almost 30 years old the
Army has sought a replacement for the
atacam since at least 2016 the Precision
strike missile that locki developed
improves on atacam in every way and it
has growth potential built in for future
improvements the Precision strike
missile was originally planned with a
max range capped at
499 km to fit within the constraints of
the immediate range nuclear forces
treaty that the US and Soviets signed in
1987 however president Trump announced
in October of 2018 that the US withdrew
from the treaty due to Contin Ed Russian
violations and non-compliance with the
expiration of the INF treaty missile
development in the US is no longer
capped at 500 kilomet and the prsm is
set to be the first US ballistic missile
with a range in excess of 310 Mi the
Precision strike missile first
operational units are set to be
delivered to the US Army by the end of
2023 defense analysts have theorized
that the pending adoption of the
Precision strike missile has more to do
with the US releasing attack thems to
Ukraine than anything else the US
government has had good reason to hold
on to its small inventory of ballistic
missiles as a safegard against
increasingly aggressive power in the
block of Russia China and Iran but with
new and better missiles set to enter
service in just a few months time the US
seems confident it can part with at
least a few of its aging yet potent
attack of missiles especially if locki
can crank out the prsm I'm your average
