Transcripts

play00:00

I still remember how it started it was

play00:04

four years ago I just finished a normal

play00:07

day of school and went to me up with one

play00:08

of my best friends as I approached him

play00:10

outside the school gates I noticed a

play00:12

book in his hands and me being the

play00:15

curious kid that I was asked him what he

play00:17

was reading the front cover looked ugly

play00:19

it was an obnoxious read with a font

play00:21

that didn't look quite right but what

play00:23

fascinated me was the title how to win

play00:27

friends and influence people it took me

play00:30

a whole year of procrastinating before I

play00:32

finally decided to do it I ordered Dale

play00:34

Carnegie's book from Amazon and I

play00:36

started reading and just like that I was

play00:38

hooked

play00:39

self development consumed me I signed up

play00:42

to the local gym I started paying

play00:43

attention to what I was eating

play00:45

I started scheduling my days out I

play00:47

started taking my passion for acting at

play00:49

the time more seriously I read book

play00:51

after book after book I followed all the

play00:54

Guru's I was told to follow meditating

play00:56

taking cold showers reading affirmations

play00:58

to myself visualizing my goals I read

play01:01

more I exercised more I hustled more I

play01:03

felt more confident and motivated than I

play01:05

had ever felt before

play01:07

this is it I told myself this is what my

play01:09

life had been missing everything was

play01:11

perfect

play01:13

[Music]

play01:15

at least that's what I wanted people to

play01:19

think the world of self-development had

play01:24

changed many things for me but there

play01:26

were some glaring issues issues that I

play01:28

had to come face-to-face with and let

play01:30

this video be a warning to those of you

play01:32

that are looking to improve your life or

play01:33

situation wherever you're at I've been

play01:36

wanting to make this video since

play01:37

starting this channel and I've finally

play01:39

plucked up the courage to do it so get

play01:41

ready to sit back relax and join me as

play01:43

we dive into the toxic world of

play01:45

self-development

play01:47

[Music]

play01:56

[Music]

play02:21

Hey

play02:23

are you looking to improve your life do

play02:26

you want to change your current

play02:27

situation have you had enough of having

play02:31

enough do you want more happiness money

play02:35

do you want to be liked do you want

play02:38

people to notice you more okay hi do you

play02:42

want to prove them wrong the people that

play02:44

you know don't believe you can achieve

play02:45

something great this is where it begins

play02:48

at least for me is started here the

play02:51

reason I procrastinated on buying Dale

play02:53

Carnegie's book was because I never felt

play02:55

the need to that was until my first year

play02:57

of college for whatever reason I

play03:00

struggled to fit in and find my place in

play03:02

that first year although technically I

play03:04

had friends that was this underlying

play03:06

sense of loneliness like I just wasn't

play03:08

myself I was constantly worried about

play03:11

what other people were thinking of me

play03:12

and I had this unhealthy desire to be

play03:14

liked by everyone then I got to a point

play03:16

where I said enough was enough I didn't

play03:18

like feeling the way I did so I decided

play03:20

to make a change and that is what

play03:22

brought me to the world of self-help

play03:24

this context is important to note

play03:26

because one of the biggest reasons for

play03:28

someone wanting to improve themselves is

play03:30

because they have a sense of

play03:31

dissatisfaction with where they're

play03:33

currently app and there's nothing wrong

play03:34

with our sentiment wanting to change

play03:36

your current situation because you're

play03:38

unhappy with it is a very powerful thing

play03:39

to do the problem here lies in your

play03:42

vulnerability if you're in a dark place

play03:44

and you're looking to get out of it you

play03:45

can be susceptible to certain problems

play03:48

self development has a nice lure to it

play03:51

doesn't it a world of people trying to

play03:53

be better versions of themselves a world

play03:56

where you take control over your life

play03:57

and decisions a world that makes you

play03:59

feel like you're making progress like

play04:01

you're maturing and doing what nobody

play04:03

else's this is it you tell yourself

play04:05

whilst everyone else is partying and

play04:07

indulging in short-term pleasures I'm

play04:09

gonna be working on myself if it was

play04:11

great doesn't it you feel better about

play04:13

yourself

play04:14

own

play04:14

it feels like you've climbed right out

play04:16

of that dark place you were just in

play04:18

you've taken the bait you've trusted a

play04:20

new voice in your head and that is when

play04:22

you become blind to the traps that lie

play04:24

in wait self-help makes you feel good

play04:38

there's no doubt about it

play04:40

there's this amazing feeling of

play04:42

satisfaction that I felt after finishing

play04:44

the final page of every self-help book

play04:46

that I read I had a rise in motivation I

play04:49

felt like I just completed the level of

play04:51

some video game and my character had

play04:52

just leveled up you see after every

play04:55

self-help book that you read off that

play04:56

every self-help video that you watch

play04:58

there is a surge of dopamine that rises

play05:01

straight into your brain that feeling of

play05:03

accomplishing something after reading

play05:05

each book made me feel incredible and

play05:07

after finishing that self-help book I

play05:09

would go straight onto Amazon and order

play05:11

a bunch of new ones that psycho would

play05:13

repeat itself many times over buy a new

play05:15

book feel a strong sense of motivation

play05:17

after reading it and then buy another

play05:19

book and on and on and on it went if you

play05:21

still don't see the problem with what's

play05:23

going on here let's take a look at the

play05:24

addictive side of dopamine

play05:26

the reason anything becomes addictive is

play05:28

not because of the thing itself the

play05:30

reason someone becomes addicted to a

play05:31

drug is not the drugs it's what the drug

play05:33

does to your brain that rush of dopamine

play05:36

is what gets you hooked and make no

play05:38

mistake it is easy to get hooked to

play05:41

self-help whether orchestrated or not

play05:43

the self-help world can pull you

play05:44

very massive illusion the illusion of

play05:47

progress after reading that book you

play05:49

feel accomplished after attending that

play05:51

seminar

play05:51

you feel accomplished after watching

play05:53

that self-help video you feel

play05:54

accomplished you feel like you've

play05:56

achieved something great and have done

play05:57

something really productive that

play05:59

motivation lingers in your system urging

play06:01

you to buy the next book attend the next

play06:03

seminar watch the next video it's only

play06:05

when you take a second to pause and

play06:07

reflect when you realize nothing has

play06:14

changed one of my favorite authors MJ

play06:17

DeMarco has a concept in his book called

play06:19

action faking which is doing things that

play06:21

make you feel like you've accomplished

play06:23

something even though no actual progress

play06:25

has been made it's that weird urge you

play06:27

get to clean your room when an important

play06:29

assignment is due it's creating a

play06:30

schedule and then calling it a day's

play06:32

work once you're finished it's reading

play06:34

about business but never actually

play06:35

starting one its buying the business

play06:37

cards instead of actually picking up the

play06:39

phone and making a sale action faking is

play06:41

an even more lethal form of

play06:42

procrastination because you're tricking

play06:44

yourself into thinking that you're

play06:45

actually making progress so let this be

play06:48

your first warning you don't need to

play06:50

read every self-help book out there or

play06:51

attend every seminar or buy every online

play06:54

course or listen to every business

play06:55

podcast there's a time when you're doing

play06:58

too much consuming and the action that

play07:00

needs to be taken is postponed this is

play07:02

the first trap that so many people get

play07:03

themselves into and it has dramatic

play07:05

consequences at the end of it an empty

play07:07

wallet a whole bunch of temporary

play07:09

motivation and a gut-wrenching

play07:10

realization in the back of your mind

play07:13

that knows you haven't achieved anything

play07:14

yet

play07:15

you haven't made any progress you only

play07:18

got better at convincing yourself that

play07:19

you did

play07:22

but behind this self-help addiction is

play07:25

something more sinister because on the

play07:27

back of your constant purchases and your

play07:29

constant chasing of motivation someone

play07:31

is profiting someone is winning question

play07:35

is who

play07:39

[Music]

play07:43

here's something you might not know the

play07:45

self-help industry is estimated to be

play07:47

worth thirteen point six billion dollars

play07:49

by 2022 with five point six percent

play07:52

average yearly gains to put it lightly

play07:55

people are making Bank off of

play07:57

self-development the selling of books

play07:59

seminars online programs podcasts blogs

play08:02

coaching live speaking events are some

play08:05

of the main mediums used so why does

play08:07

this matter

play08:08

I remember being obsessed with certain

play08:10

gurus when I started getting into this I

play08:12

happily would take out my wallet and

play08:14

spend money on their books their

play08:16

products and continue consuming their

play08:18

content with a smile on my face and that

play08:20

all-too-familiar feeling of artificial

play08:23

motivation the thing is I never

play08:25

questioned their motives

play08:26

I saw the self-development world as a

play08:28

secret community that I was a part of a

play08:30

community of other individuals looking

play08:32

to better themselves sure these gurus

play08:34

were making money but they were

play08:35

providing so much value in return they

play08:37

were trying to make my life better right

play08:39

pause this type of naive thinking

play08:43

becomes problematic when you're dealing

play08:44

with an industry that is worth billions

play08:46

you are more profitable to the self-help

play08:49

industry unhappy and discontent than you

play08:52

are happy and fulfilled remember when we

play08:54

talked about how you have to come from a

play08:55

place of being dissatisfied with

play08:57

yourself in order to want to improve

play08:58

your life well the business of self-help

play09:01

knows that in fact they rely on that

play09:03

feeling of inadequacy to pull you in oh

play09:05

and they're very aware of how addicting

play09:07

self-help can be a combination of you

play09:10

feeling inadequate and you getting a

play09:12

small high every time you consume

play09:13

self-help content turns you into an avid

play09:16

consumer of their products and make no

play09:18

mistake many of these gurus will

play09:19

continue to make product after which

play09:22

their own self-help addicted core fan

play09:24

base they are urging them to produce

play09:25

more and more products and then you fall

play09:28

into the trap of looking for the next

play09:29

big thing a trap that further adds to

play09:31

your consuming instincts you think to

play09:33

yourself that you just need one more

play09:35

thing before you find the secret before

play09:36

everything changes then

play09:38

big secrets losing weight the next best

play09:40

business model to land yourself in the

play09:42

world of financial freedom the new

play09:43

hidden secret to unlocking your

play09:45

charismatic self the one meditation

play09:47

trick that will unlock your third eye

play09:48

and so on and so on and so on and as you

play09:51

continue consuming thinking to yourself

play09:53

this time things are gonna be different

play09:55

your wallet continues to dry up and you

play09:57

never truly find yourself progressing or

play09:59

improving yourself no all you've done is

play10:01

made yourself a consumer of the

play10:03

self-help industry so here's your next

play10:05

warning the self-help industry is a huge

play10:07

business and it is relying on you not

play10:10

being content for you to continue

play10:12

consuming the goods and services that it

play10:14

produces be careful question your

play10:17

favorite gurus question the real value

play10:19

of the books and the courses and the

play10:20

seminars that you attend ask yourself do

play10:23

I really need to be told to write down

play10:25

my goal seven different times in seven

play10:27

different books from seven different

play10:28

gurus ask yourself have I consumed more

play10:31

from this industry than I have actually

play10:33

put into action

play10:46

I felt amazing after that first year of

play10:55

discovering self-help the amount of

play10:57

confidence that I had myself skyrocketed

play11:00

I was happier than I had ever been I

play11:02

wasn't looking back anymore

play11:04

the old lonely wanting to be liked by

play11:06

everyone else a version of me that was

play11:07

gone the unhappy me that wasn't there

play11:09

anymore I wish someone knew I felt like

play11:12

someone knew I didn't ever want to go

play11:14

back to feeling like I did before I'm

play11:15

going to be successful is what I told

play11:17

everybody and at that time success for

play11:20

me was becoming one of the world's best

play11:22

actors but of course this is never how

play11:25

reality plays out it sounds really silly

play11:27

but at the time I truly felt like I was

play11:29

going to be happy forever or at least in

play11:31

this constant state of motivation self

play11:33

development is its own bubble you're

play11:35

surrounded with positive messages

play11:37

everyone's telling everyone you're all

play11:39

gonna be successful oil gurus are making

play11:41

posts about being happy and blocking out

play11:43

those negative thoughts but just like

play11:45

any bubble there's always a burst and my

play11:48

burst came when I started losing my

play11:50

passion for acting

play11:52

[Music]

play12:00

in that moment it seemed like my whole

play12:02

world was turning upside down since I

play12:05

was a kid I told everyone that this was

play12:07

my dream this was my passion that I was

play12:09

never gonna quit being an actor because

play12:11

that's what self-help taught me to do

play12:13

never quit I had made myself out to be

play12:16

this person who was destined to be

play12:18

successful someone who had all ish

play12:20

together and now as my passion began to

play12:22

falter I was left with his deep sense of

play12:24

dread and doubt and I never said a word

play12:27

to anyone not for a long time I tried to

play12:29

convince myself that I wasn't losing my

play12:31

passion that I had everything in check

play12:33

as I always had that nothing had changed

play12:34

why you might ask

play12:36

because in this bubble of

play12:38

self-development surrounded by positive

play12:40

messages I was made to believe that

play12:42

negative thoughts about quitting were

play12:43

wrong and even worse I felt like if I

play12:45

accepted those feelings of unhappiness

play12:47

with what I was doing I would go back to

play12:49

being the old version of me the version

play12:51

of me before self-help it took me a

play12:53

whole year of inner self talk and obey

play12:55

until I finally realized I had to come

play12:58

to terms with quitting and I had to

play12:59

accept the truth that the world of

play13:01

self-development was trying to hide from

play13:02

me there will always be struggle and

play13:05

that's okay it's okay to not be okay

play13:07

amidst this sea of people spouting the

play13:10

same positive optimistic good vibes

play13:12

messages I realized that the actual

play13:15

meaningful things are created through

play13:17

struggle

play13:18

[Music]

play13:29

rich people don't sleep eight hours a

play13:32

day that's a third of your life if you

play13:35

want it if you want this it's work work

play13:39

like hell I mean you just have to put in

play13:41

you know 80 hour and you don't hurt our

play13:44

weeks every week cuz that got to hustle

play13:47

muscle and he's like what I said I got

play13:49

to hustle muscle work hard work working

play13:52

hard hard work work harder and work hard

play13:55

hard work hard work

play13:57

[Music]

play14:00

in this new world of Instagram

play14:02

entrepreneurs fake gurus and humble

play14:04

bragging a whole new culture has been

play14:06

formed and it runs deep in much of the

play14:09

self-help world the term hustle has

play14:11

become a buzzword and even I'm guilty of

play14:13

using it this idea of grinding working

play14:16

harder than everyone else being

play14:17

productive every second of the day is a

play14:19

principle that has become well tore in

play14:21

the self-help community now let me be

play14:23

clear I'm not saying that working hard

play14:25

is a bad thing if you're trying to be

play14:27

successful with anything in a relatively

play14:29

crowded market you are going to have to

play14:31

work hard at the right thing

play14:32

the problem with hustle culture is that

play14:34

it's about working hard for the sake of

play14:36

working hard it's become this

play14:38

romanticized concept it's about sounding

play14:40

like you're busy and working towards

play14:42

success even though you're not achieving

play14:44

anything it feels good to pretend that

play14:46

you're hustling but I can guarantee you

play14:48

that the people who are bragging about

play14:49

working hard and hustling online are

play14:51

actually doing a whole lot of

play14:53

procrastination and action faking and

play14:55

then there are those that are actually

play14:56

working every single hour of the day

play14:58

trying to make something work for

play15:00

themselves because that's what hustle

play15:01

culture taught them is the right thing

play15:03

to do but that is also problematic

play15:05

working hard is one piece of the puzzle

play15:07

working hard at the right thing is the

play15:10

final piece of that puzzle

play15:12

[Music]

play15:17

there are two immediate problems with

play15:20

working hard 24/7 I have found the first

play15:22

is being at risk of burnout a state of

play15:25

emotional physical and mental exhaustion

play15:27

caused by excessive prolonged stress the

play15:30

second is working hard at the wrong

play15:32

thing you could have a fitness blog and

play15:34

be working on that 24/7 updating it with

play15:36

new posts and new posts but the chances

play15:39

of you actually getting somewhere are

play15:40

very slim there are thousands of fitness

play15:42

blogs out there it would be really

play15:43

difficult for you to find your own

play15:45

unique selling point that blog isn't

play15:47

solving any real problems and if you had

play15:49

just taken the time out of your hustling

play15:51

to reflect on your strategy you would

play15:53

have noticed that sooner but instead you

play15:55

continue to work hard thinking that that

play15:56

is all you need to be successful once

play15:58

more the darker sides of the self-help

play16:00

industry revolve around casting a shadow

play16:02

over your eyes making you feel as though

play16:05

you've accomplished something when you

play16:06

actually haven't keeping you hooked to

play16:08

the next product and the next product or

play16:10

in the case of hustling keeping you

play16:11

attached to the idea that advice like

play16:13

working hard encompasses everything it

play16:16

takes to be successful it doesn't it's a

play16:18

facade and the darker sides of the

play16:20

self-help industry rely on you believing

play16:22

in the illusion to stay profitable

play16:25

I realized that this video has probably

play16:44

left some of you feeling a little

play16:45

confused about what you should do and

play16:47

what advice you should listen to

play16:49

I obviously don't have all the answers

play16:51

but I can say that the things have

play16:53

genuinely helped me out in my life so

play16:55

far are going to the gym and eating

play16:58

healthier going to bed earlier and

play17:00

waking up earlier writing my goals down

play17:02

for the week the month or the year but

play17:03

with an understanding that these things

play17:05

may or may not change over time

play17:06

meditating and reading books that are

play17:09

actually practical and helped me out

play17:10

with whatever situation I am facing

play17:12

hands down two of the greatest books

play17:14

I've ever read are the power of now by

play17:16

Eckhart Tolle and unscripted by MJ

play17:19

DeMarco with both of those books I never

play17:21

felt like they were trying to get me

play17:22

hooked to a product or that they were

play17:24

just trying to give me a sense of

play17:25

artificial motivation but with all that

play17:27

being said let this video be a warning

play17:29

for the traps that might lie in wait if

play17:31

you do decide to get into the self-help

play17:33

industry and if you do decide to make

play17:35

that decision and go through that

play17:36

journey just make sure not to fall into

play17:38

the same traps that I did so thank you

play17:42

for watching but stop do not click off

play17:44

the video just yet I know you're sick

play17:46

and tired of YouTube people giving you

play17:47

the monologue of like the video comment

play17:49

down below share it with your friends

play17:51

subscribe and whilst I recommend you do

play17:53

those things I do want to take the time

play17:55

to say thank you dearly for watching

play17:57

till the end of this video I put a huge

play17:59

amount of effort into creating these

play18:00

videos and I love doing it

play18:02

so if you enjoy these sort of

play18:03

documentary style videos on business

play18:04

finance and life in general do feel free

play18:07

to check out my other content I really

play18:08

think you will it do you feel free to

play18:10

check out some of my other content I

play18:12

really think you'll enjoy it it is still

play18:14

play18:15

stay tuned for that and if you've got

play18:19

any advice suggestions or anything in

play18:21

between feel free to comment below I

play18:23

tried to respond to it all and with all

play18:25

that being said I really hope you have a

play18:27

wonderful rest of the day altogether now

play18:29

hands ahead salut
