hey guys welcome back Luca here and
today I just want to talk about do I
think software engineers oversaturated
and what do I think the future looks
like for software Engineers so as we can
clearly see more and more companies are
still laying people off recently alencia
also announced a layoff on many fan
companies is also getting ready for a
second round of layouts so it really
seems to me that knowledge industry
isn't doing really really well so what
might be some of the reasons behind it
so if we look back before the pandemic
we can clearly see there was a the
consumers transition into a new consumer
behaviors and many companies sell this
as opportunities and many companies
believe that these consumer habits are
here to stay
as we can clearly see there were many
pandemic stocks that was so popular so
high but now you know they dropped 80 90
in value some of the notable ones that
was really popular during the pandemic
were like Doom Shopify these companies
benefit tremendously and because of that
many other bigger companies saw it as
opportunities for themselves as well if
you look at the number of employees at
some of these fan companies for example
Facebook Google Amazon a lot of these
companies almost doubled in size and
many of them are probably software
engineers and that just shows these
companies took let's say 10 20 years in
their company's lifespan to grow until
the pandemic level but it only took them
until 2022 to double and you know that's
that's already something that's bizarre
of course at the time many people were
saying like oh these are the golden
times of software Engineers like we have
so much shortage there's so many
different fields new abilities because
consumers were looking into these new
forms of like how they want to spend
their money online shopping becomes more
popular online streaming platforms but
now the pandemic is officially pretty
much over and because of that consumers
actually shifted back into some of their
pre-pandemic behaviors now they don't
have to stay home as much they want to
travel there's all this Revenge
traveling and a lot of those don't
involve necessarily these new behaviors
that they picked up during the pandemic
so now all these bigger companies have
these projects that they put in so much
money into and suddenly there's no
longer a need or a consumer it kind of
makes sense why these companies decide
all right we have to like this
department go but this also brings up to
my first question do I think software
Engineers over saturated like do I think
there's so many too many software
Engineers I can definitely see a case
for that for example all these bigger
tech companies doubled in size and over
the past six months so many people got
laid off 100K plus and a big percentage
of them were software Engineers that
means in the market there's like 80k 90k
even 100K like software engineers not to
include the graduates of 2022 and the
new grads from 2023 a lot of those are
also software Engineers who are seeking
entry-level positions and based on
Research done in the down before the
pandemic every year there's about 65 000
new grads with a computer science degree
and that just shows like 2023 we're
probably going to see something similar
but now the market is also full of these
software Engineers but now the big tech
companies are hiring and the small
companies can only hire so much so
clearly there is a surplus of these
software engineers and the demand is now
very high so now clearly we have this
unbalance of the supply is really really
high and the demand is not us High
so that means yes I do think as of now
like there's definitely a surplus of
software Engineers but software engineer
is very broad terms a lot of these
companies are still hiring very
specialized software Engineers such as
machine learning or even data science so
some of these more specialized fields
are still happy opportunities but again
it's a smaller percentage of these
software engineers and one thing that
also become popular back in the day I
would say like before the pandemic was
like a lot of more people came to
realization of oh
to be a software engineer I don't even
need to study computer science I can
simply go to one of those boot camps or
some sort of full stack boot camp and by
finishing the course
build my own portfolio I can find the
six figure jobs right out of boot camp
like you know that becomes more popular
before the pandemic or switching into
computer science very easily because
they can do really well in these boot
camps for example where students may not
necessarily have as much of Hands-On
experiences and that again is another
way of becoming software engineer so if
you look at the market right now you
have people who were affected by the
recent layoffs who have experience in
software engineering you have people who
have been graduated since the pandemic
am I still looking for an entry level
job you have people who are about to
graduate in 2023 who's looking for a job
and you have people who finished
bootcamp who are also looking for a job
so clearly right now the market is very
very competitive and it's definitely not
very easy to find a job
and clearly when there's a surplus in
Supply power is in the people who are
hiring now they can offer less amount of
pay while attracting higher tier talents
people with more experiences for example
now a company when they hire you entry
level they might even consider hiring a
senior level for one of these bigger
tech companies and they can afford them
now because they might be willing to
take a pay cut just to keep a job so of
course right now it's definitely not
looking good to be a software engineer
so if you watch some of my other videos
I am still very passionate and
optimistic about the tech in the long
term but however right now there's a
huge Surplus until the day that we know
for a fact these bigger tech companies
recovers or decide to resume hiring then
up until that point the Surplus is real
and if you are someone who considering
going into Tech right now and if you are
expecting to go into attack and start
working in Tech immediately I would say
right now it's probably not the best
time but if you are someone who's still
in school and graduating maybe in the
future like two years three years then
at that time maybe the economy is
already looking better and now there's
new Fields with all these introductions
applied AI new products new features new
Fields will come out and there will be
new projects especially at these big
attack companies they're going to start
looking into these fields as well and
they're going to start you know hiring
and competing for talents again so I
would say in the short term
it's not looking too hard to be a
software engineer and there's definitely
a surplus but in the longer run we don't
know like most I believe most likely we
will see some sort of slow recovery and
maybe in another 10 years we'll see a
golden time for attack again so yeah
thank you so much for watching guys I
hope this was informative let me know if
