Chapter 25: Debye-Huckel Theory | CHM 307 | 109
Summary

Highlights
The theoretical framework by Debye and Hückel in the early 1900s for understanding electrolyte interactions.
Electrolytes are complex due to the interaction between positive and negative charges.
Hückel's theory simplifies the interaction of ions in solution by considering the solvent as an average medium.
The presence of solvent molecules, such as H2O, is treated as an average environment around ions.
On average, more negative ions surround a positive ion due to electrostatic attraction.
The log of the activity coefficient can be expressed using the charge of the ion and the properties of the solvent.
The Debye-Hückel theory provides expressions for the activity coefficient of ions in solution.
The mean activity coefficient is derived from the charges of positive and negative ions and the properties of the solvent.
Kappa (κ) represents the average electric field around an ion of interest.
The relationship between kappa and the net charge around an ion is depicted graphically.
Algebraic manipulations and unit conversions lead to a final equation for the activity coefficient in terms of ionic strength.
The specific value of the permittivity of water (ε_r) at 25 degrees Celsius is given as 78.54.
The Debye-Hückel equation simplifies to a form that relates the activity coefficient to the square root of ionic strength.
Ionic strength (Ic) is defined as half the sum of the product of the square of the charge and the concentration of each ion.
The Debye-Hückel equation allows for the calculation of activity coefficients from ion concentrations.
The relationship between activity coefficients and concentration is essentially to the one-half power.
The Debye-Hückel equation is more accurate at very low concentrations, similar to Raoult's law and Henry's law.
At higher concentrations, the Debye-Hückel formula becomes less accurate, and empirical fits or other extensions are needed.
Future videos will explore approximations and extensions to the Debye-Hückel theory for more accurate calculations.
Transcripts
for electrolytes we have a theoretical
framework developed by dubai and huckle
in the early 1900s
to describe what's going on in terms of
the interaction between the charges so
this is the second reason electrolytes
are trickier to deal with is that we
have to deal with this
right the positive negative charges
interacting with each other
the essential idea behind it by huckle
theory is that if we sort of think about
one ion in solution and we're sort of
going to neglect the presence of all the
solvent molecules so this is somewhat of
a crude theory we just there is some
right there's h2o but we sort of treat
it as an average right sort of spread
all around
um and the charges interact through this
medium of the solvent right the water
that's present
now there's going to be a bunch of
negative ions around there'll be some
positive ions too
and what we want to do is sort of
right
we can't measure where all these
positions are and calculate all the
coolant potentials we'd like to deal
with this on an average
sort of basis
so on average close to our positive ion
we will have more negative ions than
positive ions
just because the negative ions will be
attracted to the positive ion and so if
we sort of average it out they'll be
you know
off you know around
if we if we integrate over the entire
range right if we think about you know
extending the radius around here to an
infinite value
we'll have as much negative charges as
the positive charge we're integrating
from
on it once once you once you average
everything out but there will be more
negative charge close to
this um this positive charge
and so we can sort of approximate that
by by averaging this out
now this gives us some expressions that
uh we'll look at so the
log of the activity coefficient of
component j is equal to minus
minus kappa
times the charge of j squared
divided by 8 pi
epsilon naught epsilon r these are so e
epsilon r this is the
permittivity of our solvent
epsilon is the permittivity of vacuum
these are sort of
i think of them as unit conversions for
electrostatic interactions for like the
coulomb's law
divided by the boltzmann constant times
temperature
and then we can we can take this
to the
mean activity coefficient
and we get an expression that looks like
this we'll have
negative absolute value of q plus times
q minus so now we're looking at both the
positive negative ions
times kappa
divided by
8 pi epsilon naught epsilon r
k b t
and this is the devical theory
and what is this kappa that's that's a
good question kappa is sort of this
representation of the
[Music]
of our mean um
our average
electric field
around our ion of interest
if we
say take make a plot of kappa as a
function of
our plot of the net charge
we see that there is you know a negative
charge right around the ion and then it
slowly tapers off as we get further and
further away
and kappa is sort of a representation of
that
okay now we can start from these
equations and we can actually simplify
this um kappa has you know a specific
equation that describes it
but
if we do a bunch of
again this is in the notes in your
textbook a lot of this if we do a bunch
of um
nope i don't want that
a bunch of algebra
and definitions and unit conversions we
can get to a final state where we have
and specifically this is for water where
we have a specific valve epsilon r is
78.54 for water at
25 degrees celsius
if we assume we have water at room
temperature we can get that log of gamma
plus minus
is equal to a bunch of constants that
work out to negative 1.173
z plus times z minus right so those are
our charges on our ions times
ic
in moles per liter right so this is in
molarity in this particular version of
the equation raised to the one-half all
right but we have to define ic ic if you
is
is what's known as the ionic strength
and ic is defined
equal to
one-half times the sum
over all the different charges in our
system
all different ions that we have of
the charge squared of ion j times the
concentration of j in moles per liter
so this gives us a way to calculate
activity coefficients from just knowing
the concentrations of the ions in
solution
so things are going to be related to
basically essentially concentration to
the one half power
now one thing about the dubai huckle
equation is that
it
it works
as as solutions get more and more dilute
they behave more and more similarly to
the you know approximate averaging
you know approach that they took to this
and so
we can see
let me bring it up here
so we can see that at very very low
concentrations so if we plot log gamma
plus minus so that's right what we're
finding with the activity right with the
dividual formula
as a function of c to the one-half so
this is almost like plotting it versus
ic to the one half
we see that
as we get to low enough concentrations
uh or low enough ionic strengths really
but loan of concentrations um
this dashed line represents the divical
formula that we were just looking at and
the solid lines are experimental values
of the
activity coefficients the mean activity
coefficients natural log of them
at low concentrations our solutions
behave close to the devical in as we get
to sufficiently low concentrations they
they approach it this is similar to what
we see
with raoult's law and henry's law
but as we get to higher concentrations
the bihuku formula doesn't work as well
and you can try and you know either
empirically fit this data or there are
other extensions to the device formula
that allow you to get a little bit
better um
better approximations here
and in the next video we'll look at one
of those approximations and
what difference this makes in terms of
doing calculations
