๐ŸŒŸ Introduction to Self-Image

Leo from Actualised.org introduces the concept of self-image, emphasizing its transformative potential on life quality. He references Maxwell Maltz's 'Psycho-Cybernetics' as a foundational text, highlighting Maltz's discovery of the power of self-image through his work as a plastic surgeon. Maltz observed that altering physical appearance did not always change a person's self-perception or life outcomes, indicating that self-image is a subconscious framework that dictates one's beliefs about reality and self. Leo encourages further study and practical application of self-image concepts.

05:01

๐Ÿง  The Subconscious Self-Image

This paragraph delves into the subconscious nature of self-image, explaining it as a mental model of reality formed by life experiences and societal conditioning. Leo likens self-image to a complex, tangled ball of yarn, mostly hidden from conscious view, yet profoundly influencing actions and behaviors. He discusses the idea that 95% of actions stem from the subconscious mind, maintaining a state of equilibrium that resists change unless one addresses and unravels the subconscious self-image.

10:02

๐Ÿ”„ Self-Image and Self-Fulfilling Prophecies

Leo explores how self-image can lead to self-fulfilling prophecies, where beliefs about oneself, such as being a poor speller or bad at math, become realities that one's actions reflect and reinforce. He warns of the dangers of holding onto false beliefs that limit personal growth and suggests that identifying and changing these beliefs is essential for significant life transformation, regardless of their validity.

15:05

๐Ÿ’” The Impact of Negative Self-Beliefs

In this section, Leo discusses the detrimental effects of negative self-beliefs, such as thinking oneself a failure, shy, clumsy, or ugly, and how these beliefs can manifest in various aspects of life, including relationships and financial status. He points out that these beliefs often operate below conscious awareness and can create stress and drama in relationships due to a perceived need for external validation.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Changing Self-Image for Lasting Change

Leo concludes by emphasizing the importance of working on one's self-image for lasting change, comparing it to lifting a heavy object with the legs instead of the back, symbolizing the use of subconscious power over willpower. He suggests that coaching can aid in uncovering subconscious beliefs and mentions Maltz's assertion that it takes about 21 days to effect a significant change in self-image. ๐Ÿ’กSelf-image

Self-image is a subconscious framework that shapes an individual's perception of themselves and their life. It is a central concept in the video, as it determines one's beliefs, actions, and ultimately the outcomes they experience. The speaker uses the example of Maxwell Maltz's observations from his plastic surgery practice to illustrate how a person's self-image can persist despite physical changes, emphasizing its powerful influence on personal reality.

๐Ÿ’กTransformation

Transformation in the video refers to the profound and positive changes that can occur in one's life by understanding and altering one's self-image. The speaker suggests that by working on self-image, individuals can achieve 'ridiculous levels of transformation,' highlighting the potential for significant improvements in various life aspects, such as relationships, finances, and personal well-being.

๐Ÿ’กMaxwell Maltz

Maxwell Maltz is a key figure mentioned in the video, known for his influential book 'Psycho-Cybernetics.' As a plastic surgeon in the 1950s, Maltz observed that altering a person's physical appearance did not necessarily change their self-image or life outcomes, leading him to explore the psychological aspects of self-perception and its impact on personal success and happiness.

๐Ÿ’กSubconscious mind

The subconscious mind is portrayed as a significant driver of behavior and life outcomes in the video. It is where the self-image resides and influences actions, often without the individual's conscious awareness. The speaker emphasizes that addressing the subconscious is essential for creating lasting change, as opposed to relying solely on willpower.

๐Ÿ’กSelf-fulfilling prophecy

A self-fulfilling prophecy is a situation where a belief held by an individual leads them to act in ways that cause the belief to come true. In the context of the video, the speaker explains how negative self-image beliefs, such as being a poor speller or a failure, can manifest in one's life, creating a cycle that reinforces the initial belief.

๐Ÿ’กCoaching

Coaching is presented as a valuable tool for personal development in the video. It involves working with a coach to uncover and challenge subconscious beliefs and self-image issues. The speaker suggests that coaching can help bring insights to the surface and facilitate the process of changing one's self-image for the better.

๐Ÿ’กBeliefs

Beliefs are integral to the concept of self-image in the video. They are the convictions one holds about themselves, the world, and what is possible. The speaker argues that beliefs, whether true or false, guide actions and behaviors, and thus, changing limiting beliefs is crucial for personal growth and achieving one's goals.

๐Ÿ’กHabit formation

Habit formation is discussed in the video as a process that takes time and is closely tied to the subconscious mind. The speaker cites Maltz's idea that it takes about 21 days to establish a new habit, which is a part of the self-image change process. This period allows for the new behavior to become ingrained in one's subconscious, leading to lasting change.

๐Ÿ’กGenetic predisposition

The concept of genetic predisposition is briefly touched upon in the video as a potential misconception within one's self-image. The speaker warns against attributing personal traits, such as shyness or clumsiness, to genetics without questioning whether these beliefs are accurate or limiting, suggesting that such beliefs can be unhelpful and hinder personal development.

๐Ÿ’กHomeostasis

Homeostasis is mentioned in the video as the body's and mind's tendency to maintain a stable equilibrium. The speaker uses this concept to explain why it is difficult to make lasting changes without addressing the subconscious mind and self-image, as the body and mind resist change to maintain their current state.

๐Ÿ’กLimiting beliefs

Limiting beliefs are negative self-perceptions that restrict an individual's potential and actions. The video discusses how these beliefs, such as thinking one is a failure or not good at math, can create barriers to success. The speaker encourages identifying and challenging these beliefs as part of the process of improving one's self-image.

hey this is Leo for actualised org and

play00:02

in this video we're going to talk about

play00:04

the self-image hey okay

play00:18

welcome back let's crack into this one

play00:21

the self-image this is going to be a

play00:23

quick breeze through what self-image is

play00:26

because self-image is such a powerful

play00:27

idea it's such a transformative idea

play00:30

first of all I love this topic because

play00:32

of the potential it has to completely

play00:34

transform the quality of your life I'm

play00:35

talking about ridiculous levels of

play00:38

transformation possible by understanding

play00:39

and utilizing this concept so we're

play00:41

going to break into it but there's so

play00:42

much here I can't cover it all in just

play00:44

15 or 20 minutes so let's pack in as

play00:47

much as we can get you a really solid

play00:48

intro to self-image hopefully convince

play00:51

you of the importance of further study

play00:53

on this topic and taking some of these

play00:55

actions to heart all right so self-image

play00:58

what is it well a lot of these ideas

play01:00

that I bring to you are really coming

play01:01

from Maxwell Malta's classic self-help

play01:04

book psycho cybernetics if you haven't

play01:07

checked that out and you want to be a

play01:09

serious student of self-help I really

play01:10

recommend it of all the books I've read

play01:12

I think this is one of the most powerful

play01:14

important practical tools that you can

play01:18

use to transform your life is psycho

play01:20

cybernetics it is ridiculously powerful

play01:22

here are some of the key points so

play01:25

maxwell maltz he was actually a doctor

play01:27

he was a plastic surgeon back in the 50s

play01:30

I believe 1950s and what he discovered

play01:33

is he started looking into psychology

play01:35

but the reason that he started looking

play01:37

into psychology and people's self images

play01:39

was because he started to do plastic

play01:42

surgery I mean he was doing plastic

play01:44

surgery and then he noticed a couple of

play01:45

interesting things the first thing he

play01:47

noticed is that he would make changes on

play01:51

people people that had crippling

play01:53

emotional problems because of how they

play01:55

looked for example they would have some

play01:57

deformity on their face which they

play01:59

thought which they thought would make

play02:01

them ugly and unacceptable or they

play02:03

thought that they had too big of a nose

play02:05

or their lips were too small or they had

play02:07

wrinkles or something like that and

play02:10

Maxwell Maltz would go in there and he

play02:13

cut them up fix them up and make them

play02:16

pretty and when he did that what he

play02:18

noticed much to his shock was that even

play02:21

though he could take an ugly person and

play02:24

change the change that person's face

play02:26

totally around and make them beautiful

play02:28

and pretty that that person two things

play02:32

would happen need two types of patients

play02:34

one patient his life would be radically

play02:37

transformed his self-confidence would be

play02:38

boosted his self-image would be awesome

play02:40

huge feel great he'd have a lot of self

play02:42

esteem and he'd go out and he'd really

play02:44

change his life he have a light

play02:46

transformation that would last for the

play02:47

rest of his life that happened with some

play02:50

of the patients with some of the other

play02:52

patients who also went through that same

play02:54

procedure what would happen is that they

play02:57

would still think that they're ugly

play03:00

even though objectively they were now

play03:02

beautiful and in fact some of the

play03:04

patients were so upset with Maltz that

play03:08

they accused him of not having made any

play03:10

changes to their face at all they would

play03:12

accuse him basically of being a

play03:13

charlatan of being a quack and of course

play03:16

he made changes but that person here's

play03:20

where we're getting to self-image had

play03:22

such a strong self-image of who they

play03:24

were before the operation that that

play03:27

self-image still remained even after the

play03:30

operation and even though the external

play03:32

the physical features changed it's the

play03:34

self-image that really determines how

play03:36

you feel about your life and even what

play03:38

you believe is true so this is a

play03:40

extremely powerful concept let's really

play03:43

define self-image what is self image

play03:45

self image is a subconscious framework

play03:52

for how you see life and yourself and

play03:59

what you believe and what you think is

play04:02

true and this applies to reality and it

play04:06

applies to yourself so every belief that

play04:08

you have is part of this self yourself

play04:12

image what you think of yourself of

play04:14

course is the self image but also what

play04:16

you think is possible that's also part

play04:18

of your self image for example do you

play04:21

think it's possible for you to be

play04:24

earning a million dollars a year do you

play04:26

really

play04:27

believe that if you do then that's part

play04:29

of your self-image if you don't if that

play04:32

if that sounds ridiculous to you sounds

play04:34

like a like a fairy tale

play04:36

like wishful thinking that's not part of

play04:39

your self-image and so that that pathway

play04:41

of reality basically is blocked off to

play04:45

you what's happening here is that in

play04:48

your mind your mind is creating a map a

play04:50

mental model of reality and how the

play04:52

world works and this model this is the

play04:55

really tricky part about it is that it's

play04:57

mostly subconscious you're not aware of

play04:58

it

play04:59

you're not aware of all the assumptions

play05:01

that you make about how your world works

play05:02

how society works how life works and how

play05:06

you work who you are you have all sorts

play05:09

of assumptions that get in there

play05:11

mostly unconsciously by being programmed

play05:14

and conditioned as you're growing up by

play05:17

your parents by all the friends you

play05:20

interact with through school basically

play05:22

every single person you come into

play05:23

contact with and not just people but

play05:25

also circumstances that happened to you

play05:27

and just even you know simple things

play05:29

like experiences that you have when you

play05:30

put your hand in your hot stove and you

play05:34

learn your lesson from that real quick

play05:35

right but that gets seared into your

play05:37

subconscious and that's part of your

play05:39

self-image and your model of reality is

play05:41

is that you don't put your hand near hot

play05:44

objects because that has hurt you in the

play05:46

past that's burned you literally so this

play05:49

is what you've got is you've got this

play05:50

self image and this self image is like a

play05:52

large I like to think of it of a ball of

play05:55

yarn think of it like you have a ball of

play05:58

your own that's this big and there's

play06:00

like literally hundreds of strands of

play06:03

yarn in there and it all tangled up and

play06:05

bunched up together and that's built

play06:06

then built up over the last

play06:09

all the years of your life up to this

play06:12

point is all the experience have come in

play06:14

and taught you different lessons give

play06:16

you different beliefs and assumptions

play06:17

and it's all congealed into this tight

play06:18

ball of yarn and it's pretty big mess in

play06:21

there and all this is sitting below the

play06:23

surface so you don't even see it you

play06:24

maybe see a little corner a little piece

play06:26

of the yarn here a little piece they are

play06:28

there and what's powerful and important

play06:32

about all this is that this is

play06:33

determining your actions I have other

play06:37

videos on this to talk about the

play06:38

how does subconscious mind but the key

play06:40

takeaway from those videos and I'm just

play06:42

going to throw out you here real fast is

play06:44

simply that ninety-five percent I would

play06:47

say of your behaviors and actions are

play06:49

subconscious so the results in your life

play06:51

are largely subconscious you're not

play06:53

consciously the results you're getting

play06:54

and your body is like a thermostat and

play06:58

your mind is like a thermostat and it

play07:00

tends to keep you in a state of

play07:01

homeostasis in equilibrium so that is

play07:04

why it's hard to make change that's why

play07:05

you're stuck where you are right now

play07:07

that's why you're stuck earning as much

play07:09

money as you do you're stuck at the

play07:11

weight level that you're stuck at you're

play07:13

stuck at your happiness kind of setpoint

play07:15

you're stuck in in your relationships

play07:17

kind of where you've always been and so

play07:19

you're kind of tend to be stuck there

play07:20

and if you want to create big change

play07:22

then you've got to start looking below

play07:23

the surface into this big ball of yarn

play07:26

you start to have start to unravel that

play07:27

stuff and looking at the self-image so

play07:30

what's powerful about the self-image is

play07:32

that anything that you really believe to

play07:34

be true

play07:34

is something that you're going to then

play07:36

align your behaviors and your actions

play07:38

with so your behaviors and really whole

play07:42

personality and what you think of

play07:45

yourself and what you think of the world

play07:46

and how you then go and act the things

play07:49

you then do in your life this is very

play07:50

practical the things you do in your life

play07:51

are all shaped by what you believe is

play07:53

true and the crazy thing here is that it

play07:57

doesn't matter if you believe it to be

play07:59

true and it's false

play08:00

you'll still operate based on that

play08:03

belief because by definition a belief is

play08:05

believed to be true by you and so it

play08:08

feels as though it's true and there are

play08:10

many things in your self-image that are

play08:12

complete horseshit false fabrications

play08:15

complete illusions and that is keeping

play08:19

you stuck where you are so if you want

play08:22

to prop yourself out of that and you

play08:24

want to get going and you want to create

play08:25

some some big change in your life

play08:27

whether with your career your

play08:28

relationships or your fitness or

play08:29

anything else or just how you even think

play08:31

about yourself then you have to start to

play08:33

dig in to self-image and do some of this

play08:35

work so when you actually start to

play08:38

change your self-image and this is

play08:40

possible it's possible to change

play08:41

yourself image then you start to create

play08:44

lasting changes that are sustainable

play08:47

that are not like a yo-yo effect that

play08:49

actually lasts and that's how you can

play08:51

create

play08:52

massive weight loss that's how you can

play08:53

create massive success with the opposite

play08:55

sex

play08:55

that's how you can create massive

play08:56

success with your finances in your

play08:58

business that's how you can create

play08:59

massive success personally in your own

play09:01

psychology just how you feel how you

play09:03

think becoming more positive rather than

play09:06

negative dropping anxiety dropping

play09:08

depression dropping alcoholism all of

play09:11

this stuff happens by working on your

play09:13

self-image whether you do it consciously

play09:14

or not you're still working on your

play09:16

self-image this is why it's so powerful

play09:17

let me give you a couple of examples now

play09:19

of what self-image is on a more

play09:22

practical level these are thoughts about

play09:25

you

play09:26

so there's thoughts about reality let's

play09:28

talk about thoughts about yourself what

play09:30

do you see yourself as being because who

play09:33

you see yourself as is what your life is

play09:37

going to reflect it's a really powerful

play09:39

idea

play09:39

your thoughts reflect your life and your

play09:43

life also reflects your thoughts so

play09:45

there is a interaction then there's a

play09:47

it's a two-way street it's not a one-way

play09:49

street right now you probably think that

play09:52

well what I think about myself is just

play09:54

what's real it's the experiences that

play09:57

I've had and if I believe that I am for

play09:59

example a poor speller I'm not good at

play10:02

spelling well that's because I've got

play10:04

all this evidence to back that up I've

play10:06

always failed spelling tests I always

play10:08

make a lot of typos people keep telling

play10:10

me I'm a bad speller I didn't do good at

play10:13

school so I must be a bad speller right

play10:17

maybe you are maybe or not but the fact

play10:22

that it's in your in your subconscious

play10:23

now it's in it's in your in that big

play10:26

ball of yarn it's part of your

play10:27

self-image now your life is going to

play10:30

start to reflect that and it's going to

play10:31

start to create self-fulfilling prophecy

play10:33

effect which can be extremely dangerous

play10:35

and it can propagate the fact that you

play10:37

are a poor speller so maybe you were a

play10:39

poor speller in the in the past does

play10:41

that mean you can't change that going

play10:43

forward but if you believe that you are

play10:46

a poor speller that's part of your

play10:48

self-image you really believe it what

play10:51

chances do you think you have of

play10:52

becoming a good speller very little

play10:55

right very very little it's really

play10:58

dangerous is when you believe it so much

play10:59

that even what I'm telling you right now

play11:01

just goes over your head and you start

play11:04

coming up with with reasons

play11:05

why I'm telling you is not true but let

play11:08

me assure you that this model of the

play11:09

self-image is very very true and there

play11:11

are shocking things about yourself that

play11:12

you believe right now with 100% faith

play11:15

uncertainty which are completely bogus

play11:17

and are completely destroying the

play11:19

quality of your life and your potential

play11:20

to grow so let's cover a few more of

play11:22

those we covered I am a poor speller

play11:24

what if you believe deep down inside

play11:26

that you're bad at math you know you

play11:29

always hated math didn't like math you

play11:31

were bad at math to school you're bad at

play11:34

numbers whenever someone asks you to do

play11:35

some accounting work some Excel

play11:37

spreadsheet work you always make

play11:39

mistakes and errors so now you believe

play11:41

you're bad at math that could be part of

play11:44

your self-image how about I'm a failure

play11:47

you imagine what that would do to your

play11:50

life if you really believe that you fail

play11:52

you're a failure what if you believed

play11:55

that you are shy what if you believed I

play11:57

am shy I'm just a shy person I'm an

play12:01

introvert what if you believe I'm clumsy

play12:05

I'm always clumsy I always say the wrong

play12:08

things do the wrong things trip into

play12:10

over stuff bump into things or just a

play12:13

clumsy person what if you think of

play12:16

yourself as an alcoholic I am an

play12:19

alcoholic I have a drinking problem I

play12:21

always have always will

play12:24

that's just who I am to my genes right

play12:28

its genetic that's a good one isn't it

play12:30

oh I'm shy because that's genetic my

play12:32

parents were shy I'm a poor speller you

play12:35

know my parents were bad spellers I'm

play12:38

I'm not smarter than my burbled the

play12:41

verbal part of my brain is just not as

play12:42

sharp as other people about that at math

play12:44

for the same reason or I'm clumsy I'm

play12:47

just naturally clumsy watch out for that

play12:50

genetic and that naturally those can be

play12:52

killers all right how about uh money so

play12:57

many negative self-image problems with

play12:59

money how about believing this money is

play13:02

hard to make what do you believe about

play13:04

money you believe money is hard to make

play13:06

or is it's easy to make do you think

play13:09

that has an effect on how much money you

play13:10

have in your bank account well it does

play13:14

very much so

play13:16

look into what you think about money

play13:18

about what if you believed that life is

play13:21

unfair and life is hard and difficult

play13:23

life is unfair and difficult and hard

play13:30

that's kind of an ugly one what if you

play13:33

believed I'm ugly you believe that you

play13:36

are ugly and that others see you as

play13:38

being ugly how do you think that would

play13:43

play out in your life so these are some

play13:46

just common examples that I might throw

play13:49

at you you can think of more there can

play13:52

be a list of literally hundreds maybe

play13:53

thousands of them these are just common

play13:56

limiting assumptions and beliefs part of

play14:00

the self-image that we can have that

play14:03

that is perpetuating the low quality

play14:06

life that we have and I've got these

play14:08

you've got them the trick is that we

play14:10

don't even know that we've got them a

play14:12

lot of these they sound very silly and

play14:14

simplistic like something for example

play14:15

like I'm a failure you might say well I

play14:17

would never say that I'm a failure

play14:19

that's just stupid

play14:20

you recognize that logically but

play14:22

actually deep down inside you actually

play14:24

believe that you're a failure because a

play14:28

lot of the things that are in your

play14:29

self-image are completely illogical

play14:31

stupid foolish until you articulate them

play14:36

the problem is that you don't even know

play14:38

what they are you haven't dug into that

play14:39

into that ball of yarn to find out or

play14:42

something like I'm ugly you might never

play14:47

have even articulated to yourself that

play14:48

you are ugly but maybe deep down inside

play14:50

you actually believe it and that's why

play14:52

you have a lot of the relationship

play14:54

problems that you have because you need

play14:55

the other person to come and give you

play14:57

compliments and to praise you all the

play14:59

time and to to lavish you with love and

play15:01

whenever he or she is not doing that you

play15:04

feel rejected you feel anger you feel

play15:06

bitter and then that relationship falls

play15:08

apart because you create a lot of stress

play15:10

and drama because you want more love and

play15:13

you want more affection from the other

play15:14

person and that drive the other person

play15:16

away from you but you need it ultimately

play15:19

because deep down without even realizing

play15:21

it you believe that you are ugly and you

play15:23

need other people to to basically

play15:26

counteract that belief and

play15:29

you want them to be showering you with

play15:30

compliments all the time kind of deep

play15:33

kind of powerful right but that is how

play15:36

it works it's crazy how the mind can

play15:37

work so let's move on and let's talk

play15:40

about wrapping up here and talking about

play15:43

you know what what kind of can you do

play15:44

about this and where where does is all

play15:49

this leading to so ultimately what I

play15:53

want you to take away from this video

play15:53

because I can't cover all the steps of

play15:55

how to actually start to affect your

play15:57

self image right now but I want you to

play15:59

take away this idea that this is

play16:01

something that's real this is something

play16:02

that's extremely important this is

play16:04

something that your mind should be

play16:05

focused on and thinking about and that

play16:07

this is where change happens you know

play16:10

the old saying where they tell you if

play16:13

you're going to be lifting some heavy

play16:15

object you want to lift it with your

play16:17

legs and not your back because if you

play16:19

lift it with your back you're going to

play16:20

strain your back and you're not gonna be

play16:21

as strong as if you lift it with your

play16:23

from your legs and so you have to kind

play16:24

of train yourself to lift from your legs

play16:26

when you're moving something heavy

play16:28

maybe you've run across this when you

play16:30

remove in your house and moving heavy

play16:32

boxes or that washing machine or that TV

play16:34

well that can apply here with doing

play16:38

personal development work and where it

play16:40

applies is this right now if you're

play16:43

trying to get some sort of change in

play16:44

your life what you're probably doing is

play16:45

you're using your willpower to say okay

play16:47

enough is enough I'm going to go on a

play16:49

diet and then you try to do that diet or

play16:51

enough is enough I'm going to go try to

play16:53

earn some more money by starting a

play16:54

business and you start that new business

play16:55

or at least you try and what happens

play16:58

you've probably noticed this is that you

play16:59

quickly fall off because your willpower

play17:01

breaks it breaks it's like you're back

play17:03

it's like using your back to lift

play17:05

something there are times when you can

play17:08

do that and it's fine to do it and I

play17:10

think building willpower is great but

play17:13

the key if you want lasting massive

play17:17

change in your life transformation then

play17:20

what you got to start doing and you've

play17:21

got to start doing work in your

play17:23

subconscious because your subconscious

play17:24

is the power center of your results the

play17:28

subconscious is where 95% of your action

play17:30

is stemming from so that's what you got

play17:32

to work on and that is working on your

play17:35

self-image it's working on your beliefs

play17:37

it's doing more of this deeper

play17:38

introspection work and one of the ways

play17:40

that you can work on that is through

play17:42

coaching coaching is really

play17:43

it for getting you these insights bring

play17:45

stuff up from your subconscious getting

play17:47

you to realize things that you haven't

play17:49

really realized before and the last one

play17:51

I'm going to end on is the fact that yes

play17:53

you can change subconscious it's

play17:55

actually not that difficult but it does

play17:57

take persistence it takes about 21 days

play18:01

as maximum waltz talks about in psycho

play18:03

cybernetics he says it takes about 21

play18:06

days to really create elastic change in

play18:09

your in your self-image so that is why

play18:12

for example if you're keeping on diets

play18:14

or if you're doing a habit you're taking

play18:17

up some sort of new habit it's going to

play18:18

take you at least 21 days maybe a month

play18:21

or two to really lock that in it's

play18:23

because it's supposed to permeate into

play18:24

the subconscious and that is a form of

play18:26

working on your self-image all right
