play00:03

we are what we repeatedly

play00:07

do Excellence then is not an act but a

play00:24

habit that is one of my favorite quotes

play00:27

of all time from Aristotle

play00:30

commonly quoted quote but very very true

play00:35

and the more I'm practicing personal

play00:37

development and the more advanced I get

play00:39

the more I realize how powerful this

play00:42

message and this idea is is that you are

play00:45

really only as good as your daily

play00:49

routine listen I've been working on my

play00:51

daily routine

play00:53

lately and by that what I mean is trying

play00:56

to get more consistency in what I'm

play01:00

doing throughout my day actually putting

play01:02

into practice the things that I know I

play01:04

should be doing the know the things that

play01:06

I know I want to be doing and what you

play01:09

don't realize about yourself if you're

play01:11

trying to get more success in your life

play01:13

if you're trying to get more results

play01:16

that it's the routine the quality of

play01:19

your daily routine the things that

play01:21

you're doing on a daily basis that is

play01:23

really going to determine how good you

play01:25

feel at the end of the day and how much

play01:27

you accomplish and really how how far

play01:30

you're going to go in

play01:32

life here's the thing every day you

play01:35

really basically making are making

play01:37

choices you can make a choice at the

play01:41

beginning of your day right as you're

play01:43

waking up to do the thing that you know

play01:46

you need to be doing at that moment or

play01:50

the choice to fall back and go into

play01:56

comfort so if you know you need to wake

play01:59

up

play02:00

at a certain time let's say 8:00 a.m.

play02:04

and you sleep in that's you already

play02:07

breaking your your routine right off the

play02:09

bat on the other hand if you do wake up

play02:14

at 8 that's already One Step that you've

play02:18

taken towards the routine that you set

play02:20

for yourself and really successful

play02:23

powerful people have successful powerful

play02:26

routines that they're living out right

play02:31

the difference is that if you're going

play02:33

through your day and let's say you set a

play02:35

list for yourself of 20 things that you

play02:37

want to do that day if you go through

play02:39

and you do each one of them and you

play02:41

execute on all of them maybe you can

play02:44

remember a day like that how do you feel

play02:46

at the end of that day you feel awesome

play02:49

right why because you lived up to

play02:53

everything that you set for yourself you

play02:54

lived up to your full

play02:56

potential you went and you did the hard

play03:00

work and you're in Integrity with your

play03:01

values the things that you thought were

play03:03

important right the things that you

play03:05

think are important if you don't take

play03:07

action on them then you're going to feel

play03:09

dissatisfied this is just a natural

play03:11

mechanism of your body Abraham maslo

play03:13

talked about this in his concept of

play03:17

self-actualization is

play03:19

that people that are not living up to

play03:22

who they know they could be to their

play03:24

full potential in the end that is a need

play03:27

that they're not meeting besides just

play03:29

having the basic need of food and

play03:32

shelter and security and friendship

play03:35

there's also the greater need to really

play03:37

actualize yourself and to do what you

play03:39

know you should be doing to do the

play03:42

things that you know you're capable of

play03:44

and when you don't do those things for

play03:48

some reason like fear or laziness or

play03:52

discomfort then your body and your mind

play03:55

let you know about that you don't feel

play03:57

very good do you imagine creating a list

play03:59

of 20 things and then slacking off and

play04:02

not doing a single one of them how are

play04:04

you going to feel at the end of that day

play04:05

even if

play04:07

you chose not to do the hard tasks and

play04:10

all you did was you sat around on TV uh

play04:12

on the couch watching TV and eating ice

play04:15

cream and that was a good little bit of

play04:19

stimulation but how are you going to

play04:20

feel at the end of that day you're going

play04:22

to feel terrible right because there's

play04:24

all these things that you could have

play04:25

been doing all these ways that you could

play04:27

have been advancing your life and you

play04:28

didn't follow up on that

play04:30

so for me what I'm really realizing more

play04:33

and more and more especially now after

play04:35

I've processed a lot of personal

play04:37

development theory and now I'm trying to

play04:39

actually get the results that the theory

play04:41

is promising what I'm really finding is

play04:43

that advanced personal development is

play04:45

about creating a really strong routine

play04:47

and that's something that I've been

play04:48

working on lately for me a strong

play04:52

routine as I'm executing it right I'm

play04:55

putting in the things that I know are

play04:58

going to make me better as a person

play05:01

better in my career better in my

play05:02

relationships

play05:05

better in any aspect of my life right

play05:08

and these can be simple things

play05:10

so uh the way that you start a routine

play05:13

is you know just from the moment you

play05:15

wake up did you wake up on time by the

play05:19

the goal that you set for yourself and

play05:21

then as soon as you wake up for example

play05:23

for me I like to go into the shower and

play05:25

right now part of the routine that I

play05:27

have is that I listen to some audio

play05:28

programs while I'm in the shower and so

play05:31

I go I put on my iPod it's hooked up to

play05:33

a little speaker and so I listen to that

play05:35

for 20 minutes while I'm showering if I

play05:38

do that I come out of the shower I feel

play05:40

great because now I'm pumped full of uh

play05:43

pumped full of information I'm starting

play05:45

to get ideas about what I can be

play05:48

bringing into these videos what I can be

play05:49

bringing into an

play05:51

article and also ways that I could

play05:53

optimize my life so I've got that going

play05:56

then after that the next routine that

play05:59

I've got is uh I take some supplements I

play06:02

do a little bit of detox I get some food

play06:04

in me and then I go and I do uh some

play06:08

visualizations and affirmations and I

play06:09

read my mission statement you know did I

play06:12

do that if I did then that gives me

play06:15

another boost another hit of momentum

play06:18

towards my day and then after I've done

play06:20

that I also do some meditation which I

play06:23

just started adding in there I started

play06:25

to add an hour of meditation every day

play06:26

which I'm committed to so now I'm doing

play06:28

that if I go through and I do an hour of

play06:30

meditation that's another piece to the

play06:34

momentum and then from that meditation I

play06:37

feel great I feel really calm that's a

play06:39

good place to start my work from so then

play06:41

I can go start my work did I execute on

play06:43

my work am I executing on that and if I

play06:46

am then again more momentum built more

play06:49

momentum built so throughout the day

play06:50

you're building momentum with this

play06:52

positive routine whereas if you don't

play06:54

have this you're really in trouble

play06:57

because what you got to understand about

play06:59

yourself if you understand anything

play07:02

about yourself from personal development

play07:04

is that you and every one of us is a

play07:07

creature of habit and it's the habits

play07:09

and the routines that I'm talking about

play07:11

that are really determining the quality

play07:13

of your life you either have shitty

play07:16

habits or you have good habits the

play07:19

question is what do you have if you have

play07:21

shitty habits then you're not going to

play07:25

be accomplishing much in your life

play07:26

you're not going to be performing well

play07:28

and you're not going to be fulfilled

play07:29

with your yourself because you realize

play07:32

that you could be doing more not only

play07:35

that but the problem with these shitty

play07:36

habits or lack of habits altogether is

play07:39

that what happens is that you're just

play07:41

like a leaf in the wind you're being

play07:42

blown around and what happens after that

play07:46

is that you start to become afraid of

play07:48

really yourself you become afraid of the

play07:52

laziness right because you know that

play07:55

life is full of challenges and then in

play07:56

the end if you just sit around on the

play07:58

couch and do nothing thing that problems

play08:01

will creep up for you you can do that

play08:02

for a short period of time but you can't

play08:05

do that forever eventually there's going

play08:07

to be reprecussions you're going to have

play08:09

to pay the

play08:10

bills you're going to have to you're

play08:12

going to have to talk to your clients at

play08:14

work after a while and maybe they're

play08:16

going to be upset at you because you

play08:18

weren't responding you're going to have

play08:19

to talk to your friends and maybe

play08:21

they're going to be upset at you because

play08:22

you weren't responding you're going to

play08:24

have to uh you're going to have to go to

play08:28

work and you're going to perform

play08:31

there you're going to have to go to the

play08:34

gym at some point or there's going to be

play08:36

problems right you can't just sit around

play08:38

there's stuff that needs to be done

play08:40

stuff for you that you want to be doing

play08:43

and so when you're not following through

play08:45

on

play08:46

that what happens is you know that

play08:49

there's going to be these

play08:50

challenges and when you start to take

play08:53

this defensive attitude about life where

play08:55

it's like oh I'll just do it later I'll

play08:57

do it tomorrow I'll push it off that's

play08:59

not really as important as I thought it

play09:01

was you start coming up with excuses you

play09:03

start

play09:04

procrastinating and what ends up

play09:06

happening is that you start to become

play09:07

afraid there's just this anxiety at the

play09:11

back of your mind and I think the reason

play09:12

that happens is because you know that

play09:15

you're slacking off and that you're

play09:17

being a lazy Slug and that when you're a

play09:20

lazy slug you're not really

play09:23

powerful you're comfortable and you're

play09:26

really afraid that someone's going to

play09:28

come away or something is going to come

play09:29

away and take that Comfort away from you

play09:31

and that can be in the form of your

play09:33

spouse yelling at you to go take out the

play09:35

trash or the form of a angry client

play09:39

whose email you didn't respond to in in

play09:41

a week

play09:42

or uh your body telling you that you you

play09:46

need to be going to the gym right so any

play09:50

one of these or

play09:52

more and you start to take this this

play09:56

defensive attitude like well I just want

play09:57

to preserve my comfort I want to

play10:00

preserve this comfort zone and I want to

play10:01

preserve it as long as I can so that

play10:03

nothing interrupts it so I'm nice and

play10:05

cozy and safe and everything's going

play10:07

smooth and I'm just kind of in heaven

play10:09

and I'm blissing out but what happens is

play10:12

that you're very wary and it's a it's

play10:17

kind of a Bittersweet Joy because even

play10:19

though you have that comfort you also

play10:21

know that something's going to come and

play10:22

disrupt that Comfort sooner or later and

play10:23

that it can't last forever and so you

play10:26

feel weak you feel afraid you feel this

play10:28

empowered powered and you make stupid

play10:31

decisions and really you go down this

play10:35

negative downward spiral of guilt and

play10:38

shame and then trying to creep your way

play10:40

back out but then falling back down

play10:43

succumbing to The Temptations of the

play10:45

Comfort that's what happens when you

play10:47

don't have any routines or you have

play10:49

negative routines on the other hand if

play10:52

you have positive routines and you're

play10:53

following up on them and you're actually

play10:55

doing things in your life that are

play10:57

making you higher conscious

play11:00

more conscious that are advancing your

play11:03

values advancing your goals advancing

play11:05

your ultimate Vision making you feel the

play11:08

way you want to feel those higher level

play11:10

feelings and just generally living up to

play11:12

your highest self when you're doing that

play11:14

how do you feel then you feel on fire

play11:17

you feel excited right you also feel

play11:21

strong and you get this sense of

play11:23

fearlessness after a while when you

play11:24

build up that momentum and let's say you

play11:27

you created a a positive routine for

play11:30

yourself and then you've executed on it

play11:31

for like a month how are you going to

play11:33

feel then if you executed flawlessly

play11:36

every day for a whole month you're going

play11:37

to feel Unstoppable you're going to feel

play11:39

like you can you can bust through walls

play11:42

you're going to feel like you can move

play11:44

mountains because those those routines

play11:48

are instilling within you a sense of

play11:50

success and a sense of living up to your

play11:52

Highest Potential and you see yourself

play11:54

doing that and all of a sudden you start

play11:56

getting new ideas and you start feeling

play11:58

more energetic you start feeling more

play12:01

Vitality you start engaging in

play12:03

interactions more you start you start

play12:06

having fun you start joking you start

play12:08

coming up with more ambitious goals and

play12:10

it just kind of builds and builds and

play12:11

builds and so now you've got this upward

play12:13

positive

play12:14

spiral and then you don't feel lazy at

play12:17

all and in fact you feel fearless and

play12:19

it's like bring on the challenge you

play12:21

want the challenge you welcome the

play12:23

challenge because you're not in your

play12:25

comfort zone you're on your Edge and

play12:27

when you're on your Edge it's like you

play12:28

feel like can do anything you feel like

play12:30

you can go to the gym and lift more you

play12:32

feel like you can take and contribute

play12:35

more to a relationship you feel like you

play12:37

can go to work and execute and knock out

play12:39

a new project really quickly you feel

play12:41

like you can maybe work on some idea or

play12:44

some start a new project that you've

play12:46

been putting off for a long time

play12:48

everything becomes open to you and

play12:51

that's the kind of the kind of life that

play12:54

we're talking about here this is what it

play12:56

means to be really fulfilled in your

play12:58

life is to be on that edge and to be

play13:00

taking action and you got to do that by

play13:02

starting to build up a positive routine

play13:05

right because it's going to make you

play13:06

feel as can make you feel great the

play13:08

trick is that if you're going down that

play13:10

negative spiral and you're already down

play13:13

in this pit of despair and guilt and

play13:15

shame and procrastination then it is

play13:17

going to take you some effort to work

play13:19

your way back up you have to start

play13:21

reversing that Trend and I think the

play13:24

biggest thing to realize about that is

play13:26

that you need to be a little bit patient

play13:27

with it because if you've been going

play13:29

down that spiral and you've been going

play13:31

down and down and down

play13:34

then it's going to be a tough it's going

play13:36

to be a tough gear shift to then start

play13:38

to move all the way back up and you

play13:40

can't expect to jump all the way to the

play13:42

top and it always is tempting right

play13:45

because when you're sitting there and

play13:47

you've been procrastinating for so long

play13:50

to reverse that whole process you wish

play13:52

that you could just skip the pain of

play13:54

reversing it all and then you could just

play13:55

be back on top but of course that would

play13:57

be too easy you have to start slow and I

play14:00

think one of the tricks there is to

play14:02

understand this concept of momentum and

play14:04

this idea that you got to be a little

play14:06

bit patient with yourself and that you

play14:07

got to realize that it's going to take

play14:09

you a matter of days maybe weeks of

play14:13

slowly ramping back up you don't want to

play14:15

just all of a sudden you know if you

play14:17

haven't been going to the gym for a few

play14:19

months just jump back in the gym and

play14:21

start lifting like you were two months

play14:23

ago that's not going to work out you're

play14:25

going to burn yourself out and just

play14:27

really make a a pain for yourself uh

play14:29

same thing at work you know if you

play14:31

haven't checked a bunch of emails that

play14:32

you need to check committing yourself to

play14:35

going and fixing all of that in one

play14:38

sitting probably not a smart idea you're

play14:40

going to want to chip away at it and

play14:41

slowly ramp your way up because the

play14:43

thing is that you're not your body and

play14:45

your mind are not trained that's what

play14:47

routines are good for is that they keep

play14:48

you on track and through a slow and

play14:50

gradual process they train you up to

play14:53

handle the stress to handle the

play14:55

challenge and when you haven't taken

play14:58

that that gradual process then you

play15:00

literally can't you can't handle the

play15:02

stress by just jumping

play15:04

from not going to the gym let's say and

play15:07

then all of a sudden going to the gym

play15:09

and running a couple miles or lifting

play15:11

some heavy weights can't do it you have

play15:13

to build your weight back up and that's

play15:15

why I love positive routines is because

play15:17

they slowly get you towards your goals

play15:19

they slowly move you towards your vision

play15:21

and it's really powerful to be on track

play15:23

with that cuz you see every day that

play15:24

you're taking baby steps and those baby

play15:26

steps even though one missing one baby

play15:29

step is insignificant not a big deal but

play15:31

in the end it's the baby steps that get

play15:33

you to where you want to

play15:34

go I think the challenge is that most of

play15:37

us struggle with creating a positive

play15:39

routine I really want to encourage you

play15:41

to sit down right now and figure out

play15:45

what is going to be a routine that is

play15:48

executing on your values and on your

play15:49

goals what does that mean for you does

play15:51

that mean waking up on time does that

play15:53

mean hitting the gym right as soon as

play15:55

you wake up does that mean taking a

play15:57

shower and brushing your teeth does that

play15:59

mean eating a healthy breakfast does

play16:01

that mean getting to work on time

play16:03

instead of being 10 minutes late like

play16:05

you usually are does that mean spending

play16:08

some time with the kids before work and

play16:10

then what after that you know do you

play16:12

need to do some meditation do you need

play16:14

to do some journaling for me putting

play16:16

these little pieces into place is where

play16:18

it's really at this is what really

play16:20

changes the quality of your life and

play16:21

gets you much better results when you're

play16:23

putting a habit into place and it can be

play16:26

something really small like five 10

play16:29

minutes of journaling in the morning

play16:30

about your goals or maybe 20 minutes of

play16:33

visualization about what you want to

play16:35

accomplish or maybe like I said eating

play16:37

that healthy breakfast and starting off

play16:39

that way so that you don't get some

play16:41

sugar crash or feel bad about yourself

play16:44

uh and about your weight and about your

play16:46

shape because you're continuing to feed

play16:48

that that negative cycle so breaking it

play16:50

in the morning whatever that might be

play16:52

right building that up that's that's it

play16:55

that's kind of the secret The Secret of

play16:57

success is doing that and successful

play17:00

people have a routine like that look at

play17:02

them look at what they do they wake up

play17:04

early and then they're on top of it

play17:06

they're doing stuff they're not they're

play17:08

not fall falling short on their daily

play17:11

tasks they're just not they have a

play17:13

really strong routine built up and

play17:14

chances are that they've been executing

play17:16

on it very consistently for weeks months

play17:20

maybe even years to the point where it's

play17:23

just automatic for them and for most

play17:26

everybody else it's a struggle we try to

play17:29

maybe do one thing another thing try to

play17:31

get a routine up but we never kind of

play17:33

crystallize it we never Master it and so

play17:37

we always struggle because when you're

play17:38

trying to build it up the first time

play17:40

there's that hump right there's that

play17:41

that initial large investment of energy

play17:44

where there's a lot of

play17:45

emotional effort

play17:47

involved later on it gets really easy

play17:50

but right now it's going to be

play17:51

challenging and you have to you have to

play17:53

kind of bite the bullet on that but if

play17:55

you're always just putting in the effort

play17:57

and then dropping it and then putting in

play17:59

the effort and then dropping the routine

play18:01

putting in the effort and dropping it

play18:02

then you're always putting in so much

play18:03

effort and becomes really painful

play18:05

emotionally taxing on you and you never

play18:08

get that long-term benefit of just kind

play18:11

of coasting and using that routine to

play18:13

just run your life and run it really

play18:15

well so you're always

play18:17

either down in the comfort zone or

play18:20

you're trying to get up but then you

play18:22

never quite make it it's kind of like a

play18:24

rocket trying to escape Earth's gravity

play18:27

right you want to make sure that when

play18:29

you do that you're fully committed and

play18:31

you make a Full Burst and like you

play18:33

really have enough fuel to get yourself

play18:36

out of Earth's orbit otherwise you're

play18:37

going to fall back down that's kind of

play18:39

what it's like when you're building a

play18:40

positive routine so I find that one of

play18:44

the reasons that this is happening is

play18:45

because we don't have a lot of structure

play18:48

in our lives and I mean like when we're

play18:50

in

play18:51

school or when we're part of a family

play18:54

when we're growing up there tends to be

play18:56

more of this structure because you're

play18:58

not fully independent you're not fully

play19:01

autonomous and you're you got your

play19:04

school you got X number of hours of

play19:05

schooling that you do then you go to

play19:08

maybe to to sports and then you go and

play19:11

you do other activities and then you

play19:13

spend time with the family and so what

play19:15

ends up happening is that you can build

play19:16

some routines up with that in fact I

play19:18

remember when I was in school I really

play19:20

did a lot of studying um and I because I

play19:22

valued academics and for me that was a

play19:24

really solid structure I built a lot of

play19:28

uh a lot of my happiest moments were

play19:30

from that because I was following

play19:32

through and I had a really positive

play19:33

routine and I built that up over years

play19:35

and I didn't really even consciously

play19:37

understand what I was doing I can only

play19:38

see that now in retrospect with the kind

play19:40

of the wisdom that I've accumulated

play19:43

recently but then I lost that you know

play19:45

after you graduate college what do you

play19:47

do you stop studying you stop reading um

play19:51

you start slacking off more and maybe

play19:53

your job has some structure to it but I

play19:56

tend to find that once we become

play19:57

independent once we become autonomous we

play20:00

kind of separate a little bit from our

play20:01

family we're off on our own doing our

play20:03

own thing unless you're consciously

play20:05

thinking about this stuff and you're

play20:07

doing this personal development and

play20:09

you're journaling and you're thinking

play20:11

and you're planning out what your

play20:12

routines should be then I tend to think

play20:15

I tend to find that people don't have a

play20:17

routine really or they have really

play20:19

negative habits and they're down in that

play20:22

comfort zone because they've been uh

play20:24

procrastinating for so long and so

play20:26

they're afraid they're not on their Edge

play20:28

they're living really half of a life

play20:31

they're not living a full life and I

play20:34

want that to be totally different so

play20:37

what you got to start doing is you got

play20:38

to sit down and craft out what you want

play20:41

your routine to be and it's really

play20:43

exciting because what you do is you

play20:45

create kind of a skeleton structure

play20:47

something basic you know maybe waking up

play20:48

on time hitting the gym going to work on

play20:51

time do a little bit of meditation at

play20:53

lunchtime whatever you know set up a

play20:56

basic something basic something you can

play20:58

follow through on pretty easily and then

play20:59

over time what you're going to do is

play21:01

you're going to add in pieces it's going

play21:02

to be like a like a like a module that

play21:06

you're building right so you got the

play21:08

backbone of your routine and then you're

play21:09

adding these modules on so you might

play21:12

find you know a technique like

play21:13

visualization and then you might add

play21:15

that in somewhere in your schedule try

play21:17

to fit it in and then see how that works

play21:19

for you maybe it'll work really well

play21:20

maybe it's not going to work so well for

play21:22

you maybe instead you'd like to add in

play21:24

something else instead of visualization

play21:26

maybe you want to do some journaling or

play21:28

maybe you want to go and instead spend

play21:30

some time with the kids or whatever is

play21:32

important to you and you try these

play21:34

things you add them on until eventually

play21:36

you create something that's really solid

play21:38

and you keep executing on it of course

play21:41

every single day every single week so

play21:44

that you build up a lot of momentum and

play21:46

then you've got something that is making

play21:48

you really fulfilled and then it's also

play21:50

making you successful because you're

play21:51

taking baby steps and this routine

play21:54

should be designed in such a way where

play21:55

of course you are working towards that

play21:58

career that you have or your business or

play22:00

your family whatever it is that you want

play22:02

to be productive in but it's also going

play22:04

to make you feel good because you're

play22:06

executing on it and it's putting you if

play22:08

you design it right into a higher

play22:10

cautious estate right because one of the

play22:12

things for example in my routine that I

play22:13

want to put in more consistently is

play22:15

reading reading more doing it more

play22:17

consistently than I've been doing it so

play22:19

far that's a really good one right and

play22:22

maybe you have to also consider some of

play22:24

the stuff you might want to cut out if

play22:25

you've got some negative habits that

play22:27

you've got like maybe watching too much

play22:29

television maybe you're checking your

play22:31

email too much maybe you're on the

play22:33

internet too much whatever that might be

play22:35

you know maybe you're texting too much

play22:37

throughout the day and that's causing

play22:39

you to lose focus so this is where it's

play22:42

at this is where you do personal

play22:43

development this is kind of where the

play22:45

rubber meets the road because we can

play22:46

talk about all the theory and you can

play22:50

understand all these advanced concepts

play22:52

but in the end it's the habits that you

play22:54

build it's the practice right it's one

play22:56

thing to know something intellectually

play22:59

it's another thing to actually implement

play23:00

it in your life so that's what I want

play23:02

for you is I want you to sit down right

play23:04

now and think about how you

play23:07

can create a more powerful routine for

play23:10

yourself and then go ahead and starting

play23:13

the next day commit to doing it and

play23:15

commit to doing it for at least a few

play23:17

weeks because that initial hump you have

play23:21

to get through you have to escape

play23:22

that uh that gravity get that escape

play23:26

velocity so that you're out out of or

play23:28

bit and then see how you feel and see if

play23:32

that is not worth the effort that you

play23:34

put into it all right this is Leo I'm

play23:36

going to sign off go ahead and comment

play23:40

tell me what you think about this of

play23:41

this concept and then go ahead and also

play23:44

share and like this if you like it and
