Transcripts

play00:00

but welcome back to the system on this

play00:02

last day of 2019 this is the last day of

play00:06

our information gathering portion of the

play00:09

energy sovereignty project many of you

play00:12

had expressed concerns that this was

play00:14

palpable it was over no it's not over it

play00:17

is just the beginning over the next four

play00:19

to six months or so I'll be releasing a

play00:21

series of short videos that focus in on

play00:24

the individual aspects of what we've

play00:27

learned from the system things like

play00:29

calculating our losses

play00:30

things like examining the overall

play00:34

effectiveness of the the home solar

play00:38

examining how the system coped with

play00:41

driving an electric vehicle and charging

play00:44

charging that all of these things will

play00:47

be really interesting to look into in

play00:49

greater detail but this video is just me

play00:54

thanking all of you for following along

play00:57

with the project special thanks to a CW

play01:01

any 88 Australia he gave some great

play01:05

advice and encouragement early on in the

play01:08

system and then of course the help from

play01:11

Li and Tomas especially Tomas in helping

play01:15

us with these comparative studies that

play01:17

is so important with a project such as

play01:20

such as ours and with that let me just

play01:24

wish you all a very happy new year as we

play01:29

move into 2020 now we're going to go

play01:34

back over the studio quickly and discuss

play01:36

the title of the video and why we have

play01:40

been absent over the last couple of

play01:43

months really starting back in September

play01:47

October we started noticing that there

play01:49

are a lot of anomalies going on with the

play01:52

system one of the early complaints that

play01:54

we had about the system noise is that it

play01:56

wasn't able to draw power from the grid

play01:58

and because

play01:59

that I felt that the system was really

play02:03

hampered in its ability to serve the

play02:07

customer if it wasn't able to do that it

play02:10

was very frustrating because then that

play02:12

meant that I couldn't do some of the

play02:13

ignition tests that I wanted to do that

play02:15

dealt with losses and that kind of a

play02:18

thing from doing something like charging

play02:19

the system to 100 percent watching how

play02:21

many days it would go and then repeating

play02:23

that testament figuring out at what

play02:26

level of charge would be something that

play02:30

would be useful to the homeowner but not

play02:32

being able to charge off the grid that

play02:34

was a terrible problem well over the

play02:37

last couple of months Tesla has been

play02:39

working behind the scenes and it's been

play02:45

interesting to see the results of them

play02:47

implementing their AI and again we'll go

play02:50

to the studio we'll look at that in

play02:51

greater detail but what I wanted to

play02:53

mention here was is that this really did

play02:57

make it impossible for me to release

play02:59

videos and give any kind of meaningful

play03:01

information the lead-in for these videos

play03:05

is about three to five days or so from

play03:08

the time that I actually do one to the

play03:10

time that it usually comes up on the on

play03:14

YouTube this is this video here is the

play03:17

exception this one's going to be a

play03:18

fairly short video an introduction to AI

play03:21

we're going to go ahead and follow this

play03:23

up with some subsequent videos but I

play03:25

just wanted to let you all know what had

play03:27

happened to us over this last a couple

play03:29

of months or so but every time I would

play03:33

be about to release a video I would

play03:36

notice that the system had radically

play03:38

changed and that the information that I

play03:40

was about to release was no longer valid

play03:43

and so it was very frustrating I'm sure

play03:46

it's been frustrating for you to oh you

play03:48

know here you want to see the closeout

play03:49

of the year and all of a sudden the

play03:50

videos stopped but I can't in any good

play03:52

conscience release information that is

play03:56

already is already out of date so I know

play03:58

it's best just to go ahead and wait and

play04:00

then we'll go ahead and recap it at the

play04:03

end of the year and then we'll also have

play04:04

to follow this obviously as we go into

play04:06

2020 to see how

play04:09

system is responding and with that let's

play04:11

go ahead and head back over to the

play04:13

studio and we'll take a closer look at

play04:15

exactly what I'm talking about

play04:21

[Applause]

play04:21

[Music]

play04:30

[Applause]

play04:32

[Music]

play04:46

but welcome back to the studio for our

play04:49

closeout for 2019 and a quick recap of

play04:53

everything that's been going on to the

play04:55

last couple of months here you're not

play04:59

going to make this video too long

play05:00

because we will be covering all of this

play05:03

later this week in greater detail but I

play05:06

just wanted to get this video out to

play05:08

remind everybody that we are still

play05:10

working on all of this the delay as I

play05:13

said in the intro was largely due to the

play05:15

fact that Tesla has been very active in

play05:18

its software changes and it simply

play05:21

wasn't possible to continue to give

play05:24

accurate information by the time I was

play05:26

ready to release a video I would do my

play05:30

self check to verify that everything was

play05:33

the way that the way that I was

play05:36

presenting it and something would have

play05:37

changed and so then I'd contact Tomas

play05:40

orally to try and help me out with a

play05:42

little alteration on their end as a bit

play05:45

of a sanity check to try to figure out

play05:46

you know what you know what was going on

play05:49

they weren't able to verify my

play05:50

information and so then this wound up

play05:53

into this this kind of a loop where it

play05:56

really wasn't possible to produce a

play05:58

video giving any accurate information

play06:02

whatsoever so we just I just didn't and

play06:05

so anyway here's an example of exactly

play06:08

that kind of a thing that that I'm

play06:11

talking about I'm not gonna spend a lot

play06:12

of time on this don't worry you know if

play06:14

this goes by really quickly none of this

play06:17

is actually accurate anyway that's just

play06:19

kind of give you an idea of what what we

play06:21

were struggling with so by the 13th of

play06:23

this month I thought I had a handle on

play06:25

what was going on and I was preparing to

play06:27

release my findings to you guys and then

play06:30

allow some of you that have these

play06:32

powerwall systems to perform some of

play06:33

these tests yourself so here's a very

play06:36

quick walk through what I did very

play06:37

quickly start off with we had a baseline

play06:42

of how the system was when when we

play06:44

arrived and so here we go this is just

play06:46

showing you know the system it

play06:50

this is actually on backup power doesn't

play06:53

always produce that little orange border

play06:54

around it but we are in backup power

play06:57

it's just one of those times and didn't

play06:59

show the border and so the grid power is

play07:01

shut off okay so I then with the here is

play07:07

showing the settings I've got the

play07:09

reserve set to zero and the Stormwatch

play07:13

turned off and then the moment that I

play07:17

turned the grid power back on boom we

play07:20

get this rogue charge again now again

play07:22

this isn't like the Stormwatch charge

play07:25

this is full-blown five kilowatts per

play07:29

power wall boom straight to the straight

play07:33

to the system Jesus so all right well so

play07:37

then I tried to manipulate it I was able

play07:42

to then by turning the reserve from 100%

play07:47

back to one percent not zero but one

play07:50

percent I was actually able to then get

play07:52

the system to stop rogue charging and so

play07:55

I thought oh well that's great I'll go

play07:56

ahead and let everybody know that hey we

play07:58

can now perform some tests we can

play08:00

actually manually send the system into a

play08:02

rogue charge state and then pull it out

play08:04

so at this point I I thought I had a

play08:11

pretty good a pretty good handle on what

play08:14

was what was going on mm-hmm

play08:17

well I didn't so again aside from the

play08:24

rogue charging that was going on we also

play08:27

were noticing these little spikes that

play08:32

were going on now all of this really

play08:37

dates back to the first rope charging

play08:41

incident that we saw back on October

play08:43

20th of pull these guys at pure quick

play08:45

this is this is from the from October

play08:48

20th and again it shows that that high

play08:50

rate of charge that we then terminated

play08:55

back to this we started seeing these

play08:58

little spikes around that time and I

play09:00

thought oh you know what's going on

play09:01

there

play09:03

and so then as time went on they got

play09:06

worse those spikes were getting more

play09:09

radical and so here we have November

play09:12

28th and so this is a really good day to

play09:19

look at because this is from a day when

play09:22

the system charge never dropped below

play09:23

50% so what's all these spikes we should

play09:27

just be flat right well what's causing

play09:33

this so then what we came to the

play09:36

conclusion of is is that Tesla was

play09:38

putting something in there to handle

play09:41

this switching the Tesla was actually

play09:43

causing this switching somehow here's a

play09:45

good day to look at it again this is

play09:48

from the 28th and what we'll see here

play09:50

this is the screenshots of both the

play09:55

solar contribution and then the

play09:59

switching that was done this is the from

play10:01

the grid switching and so you can see as

play10:05

you wind up getting these getting these

play10:07

fall offs from from the cloudy weather

play10:12

as the clouds would roll through then

play10:14

you were actually drawing and and

play10:16

dropping power from the from the grid

play10:20

even charging a little bit there you can

play10:22

see even a couple of those spikes where

play10:24

we were actually sending a little bit of

play10:26

power to the grid well so what's

play10:29

happening here well the reason this

play10:31

video again was so delayed was that by

play10:34

the time I did that test on December the

play10:37

13th again I thought I had it pretty

play10:39

well

play10:40

hammered out I didn't I contacted Tomas

play10:43

to run a comparative test to see if he

play10:45

was seeing the same thing I was he was

play10:47

not able to replicate my results well

play10:51

Tesla had in the background installed

play10:56

this AI that was now in control of the

play11:01

grid power now here is what the system

play11:06

started doing on the 26 actually started

play11:09

to pay closer attention so here's a

play11:12

screenshot couple screenshots from the

play11:14

26th

play11:16

so after the setting after I set the the

play11:19

system to 30% reserve because we were

play11:22

expecting thunderstorms to to come in

play11:24

over the over the next couple of days I

play11:27

wanted to put some reserve into the

play11:29

system from solar the following day now

play11:32

again the way that it usually works is

play11:34

when you set it up like this

play11:37

then the system won't obviously charge

play11:39

from the grid but it'll wait for the

play11:41

next day solar contribution when Solar

play11:43

starts then when it'll do is it'll send

play11:46

all of that solar power to the batteries

play11:48

and then it'll supply all of the home

play11:52

power from the grid okay that works out

play11:56

well again after saying the system here

play11:59

to 30% reserve to my surprise the system

play12:03

was actually trickle charging the

play12:04

batteries from the grid at 12:00 12:00

play12:09

in the morning slightly after midnight

play12:12

so obviously I'm very curious now to see

play12:16

what's going to happen when solar starts

play12:20

contributing the next day again what we

play12:22

usually see then is that kind of a

play12:24

crossover where the all of the power say

play12:27

you were say you were contributing five

play12:31

kilowatts from the from the solar and

play12:34

your home was obviously using less than

play12:36

five kilowatts so then all of that five

play12:38

kilowatts would be going to the battery

play12:39

and then say the home was drawing two

play12:41

kilowatts let's see the two kilowatt

play12:43

coming from the grid and so it left the

play12:46

left the battery out out of the mix

play12:48

entirely but now we see this so you can

play12:53

see here that both the solar and the

play12:55

grid are contributing to the home load

play12:58

and the batteries are charging at 2.1

play13:01

kilowatts but why shouldn't the

play13:03

inserting all that power all 2.6

play13:06

kilowatts be going to the to the

play13:09

batteries well nope because Tesla fix

play13:12

that problem so here's another set of

play13:14

images from early morning on the 30th so

play13:19

here we'll put up both of these at once

play13:20

you can kind of see it here and I'll

play13:22

tell you what's going on so these don't

play13:26

represent those kind of momentary

play13:28

switching that

play13:29

just kind of happened in the background

play13:31

we've mentioned those in previous video

play13:34

these actually represent persistent

play13:37

states that that were there for at least

play13:39

ten minutes or so and again this one I'm

play13:42

honored this and what you're seeing on

play13:44

the first screen there at 1:17 it

play13:46

remained this way with 2.2 kilowatts

play13:52

coming from the from the grid almost

play13:54

next to nothing assisting the home and

play13:58

the rest of the power coming from the

play14:03

power wall but why is it limiting that I

play14:05

was wondering that and it wasn't

play14:07

changing right and so then a little

play14:10

while later

play14:10

this place seems 1:29 a.m. boom it

play14:13

switched and now all of a sudden we had

play14:17

an additional home load I wound up

play14:20

turnings I probably put the put the

play14:24

coffee on her did a microwave or

play14:25

something but I'm watching it here and

play14:27

then all of a sudden I'm seeing that

play14:29

it's contributing to the battery not

play14:33

just to the home but to the battery at

play14:36

1:00 in the morning with no solar

play14:38

contribution and again it stayed that

play14:41

way for a time I don't know exactly how

play14:44

long in that and in that respect so it

play14:49

was doing this because I had set the

play14:52

reserve to 30% when I went back because

play14:57

again I wanted to verify that what I'm

play14:59

telling you was accurate that this was

play15:01

actually something the software was

play15:02

doing and not just some kind of

play15:05

switching right so I went and I set the

play15:09

reserve to five percent obviously below

play15:15

that 30 percent that it's trying to

play15:16

maintain in the middle of the night off

play15:20

of grid power and what does it do well

play15:24

this was just before the first

play15:27

contribution of solar in the morning

play15:30

boom starts to go completely from from

play15:35

the batteries so what's the takeaway

play15:38

from all of this if you'll remember back

play15:41

when we started the energy sovereignty

play15:43

project we discussed how eventually the

play15:46

software would take over the system

play15:48

management because it would be more

play15:50

efficient for it to do that to base how

play15:53

it sets the system up on things like the

play15:56

homes average use over the week and what

play16:00

its average solar contribution had been

play16:04

maybe looking at the previous week or

play16:06

two weeks to kind of kind of establish a

play16:09

trending to see what what was going on

play16:12

well that's exactly what's happened at

play16:17

the time we were first looking at this I

play16:20

knew that if the system didn't have the

play16:23

ability to draw from grid power that

play16:25

there would be no way that it would be

play16:27

able to do this and so obviously test to

play16:31

fix that but well it's still not

play16:34

possible as far as I know to manually

play16:37

set the system to fully charge off of

play16:41

off of grid power it's also not

play16:43

necessary to do so under the current

play16:45

system if you are below a set threshold

play16:48

of your reserve whether it's 30% 20% 50%

play16:51

if the system is below that point it

play16:54

will sip from the grid even at night to

play16:58

try and reach and maintain that set

play17:02

point and then optimize it over the

play17:05

course of the next several days and even

play17:10

with no solar contribution at all it

play17:13

still sips from the grid it still tries

play17:16

to get it up slowly to that that reserve

play17:20

point and so though this is just the

play17:23

preliminary video to let you know that

play17:24

Tesla has seems to have solved the grid

play17:28

charging issue certainly to my

play17:30

satisfaction I really don't think that

play17:33

we can ask anything more from the system

play17:35

as much as we would all love to be able

play17:37

to manually just shoot a charge to the

play17:40

to the batteries whenever we wanted to

play17:43

the reality is is that for the average

play17:44

consumer this works just fine and it

play17:47

also allows the grid not to be hammered

play17:49

because if you can imagine say everybody

play17:51

had the ability to go ahead and go in

play17:54

and turn the

play17:56

turn the system to fully charged

play17:58

well you're expecting cloud cover or

play18:01

rainy days or whatever you and everybody

play18:02

else in your neighborhood does that and

play18:04

that grid would go absolutely berserk

play18:06

because everybody with a large system

play18:08

would then be charging it 20 or 30

play18:10

kilowatts that's not healthy and so with

play18:15

that leave the video here more to follow

play18:17

obviously as we go along but I just

play18:20

wanted to wish you all a very happy new

play18:24

year and best wishes for 2020 and this

play18:27

isn't the end of the energy sovereignty

play18:29

project this is only the beginning
