Transcripts

play00:00

Who among us has never faced a difficult situation in his life?!

play00:04

Maybe the hardest ones are those that happen suddenly without any prior notice.

play00:08

Like when you park your car in front of your house

play00:10

And suddenly, BOOM!!

play00:11

A tree falls on it and smashes it to pieces!

play00:14

Or when you have studied hard for an exam, but something gets in your way

play00:17

So you miss the exam and fail!

play00:20

Or when your baby is born with a rare disease that has no cure

play00:23

It drives you crazy, and you need to understand…

play00:25

Why?!

play00:26

God, I am not objecting I swear…

play00:28

But I want to understand, why?!

play00:29

This was a brand-new car

play00:31

I bought it with all money I've been saving my whole life

play00:33

I studied and focused the whole year

play00:35

This is the first baby

play00:38

God, I will be patient…

play00:39

But I am not able to be content

play00:40

Because I don't understand, "Why?!"

play00:42

And you stay heart ached like that for a long time, waiting to understand the wisdom of this test

play00:47

Waiting for anything to happen that explains to you what happened

play00:51

So that your head rests and stops thinking.

play00:53

But the question is...?

play00:54

Must there be wisdom?

play00:56

Or the actual question is, do you have to know the wisdom of every test?

play01:01

Imagine that Allah, the Almighty, set forth a parable by one of the most beautiful Qur'an stories

play01:06

To answer that specific question

play01:09

The story of prophets Moses and Al-Khidr

play01:12

Our Lord, the Almighty, told us three different stories of fate

play01:16

With a different end for each story

play01:19

Let's take a look at these situations, but this time, from a new point of view.

play01:23

Not from your point of view, as a reader,

play01:25

No,

play01:26

But from the story heroes' point of view

play01:28

Imagine a group of poor people with nothing at all but a boat from which they make a living.

play01:33

This boat is like a taxi or a microbus in how its owners treat them.

play01:36

See how drivers treat their cars?

play01:39

Especially if the driver owns the car, not just a car rented to work.

play01:43

You see them every morning cleaning and wiping the vehicle

play01:46

How not!

play01:47

It's the source of livelihood for them and their children.

play01:49

They must keep it in a very good shape

play01:50

They set great stores on it and make so much of it.

play01:53

So are the owners of the boat we're talking about

play01:55

They sail it, carrying people from one place to another

play01:58

One time when they were getting people on,

play02:00

Two men got on the boat with them; they looked so fine

play02:03

How not?! They are prophets!

play02:04

And suddenly, while sailing the boat,

play02:06

One of the two men, prophet Al-Khidr, went to one of the boat's sides and -Boom!- holed it

play02:12

Prophet Moses panicked and asked him: "What've you done?!"

play02:14

"He replied: “Did I not tell you that you won't be able to be patient?”"

play02:17

After all, the boat arrived, and people got off it

play02:20

But when the sailors wanted to go back, they saw the hole

play02:23

Imagine their situation

play02:24

Oh God! What on earth is that?!

play02:26

It's all over for me!

play02:27

Oh God, I am already suffering enough

play02:29

Am I just not indebted enough?!

play02:31

But this, too! We're making a living of it!

play02:33

We have had enough already! It can't get any worse!

play02:36

Allah is sufficient for me, and what an excellent Trustee

play02:38

Why, God?!

play02:40

Why?..Why?!

play02:42

It would be their reaction, right?

play02:43

They are such poor, hardworking sailors,

play02:45

And it was already bad enough!

play02:46

But, Glory be to God!

play02:48

While heading back, they were stopped by a checkpoint

play02:50

"Stop here!"

play02:51

Hey, you, step aside!

play02:53

Get off the boat, NOW

play02:54

What is going on?! What's happening?!

play02:55

"We're taking this boat,"

play02:57

This is the aisle of His Majesty the King!

play02:59

And anything passes this way becomes his.

play03:01

I want you to imagine the situation!

play03:03

Are we running short of bad incidents to bear that one?!

play03:05

Is it death and destruction?!

play03:07

But suddenly, while they were getting off, leaving their boat behind,

play03:10

They heard the man calling after them again

play03:12

"Hey, you, wait"

play03:13

This boat has a flaw in it

play03:14

Our glorified king won't like it

play03:16

Take it and get off

play03:17

GET OFF here quickly

play03:19

I don't wanna see your faces

play03:22

So this hole and that test that made them so sad are what saved them!

play03:27

Now, I want you to imagine their situation!

play03:29

O, God! Thank You so much

play03:31

All praise be to You, God, thank You, thank You.

play03:34

So this hole that they objected on moments ago, saying, "Why that?!"

play03:38

It is the same one they are thanking God for now!

play03:42

And this is the explanation of what God the Almighty said:

play03:45

"But it may be that youᵖˡ dislike something while it is good for you,"

play03:49

"This is the interpretation of what you were unable to endure patiently"

play03:53

And this is the first kind of test that we may have in this world

play03:57

And God willed to let us know the meaning behind it

play04:00

So that we praise Him for everything and any test

play04:03

Okay, now let's see the second kind of test,

play04:05

Also, from the story heroes' point of view

play04:08

A good and believing father and mother,

play04:10

God graced them with a beautiful baby after a long time

play04:14

And the baby grows up to be a fine boy in front of their eyes

play04:17

But, suddenly, while he was playing with his friend in the street,

play04:20

Two strangers men came,

play04:22

And one of those two men lured the boy and killed him!

play04:25

Imagine that!

play04:26

Prophet Moses couldn't take it!

play04:28

"He said, “Did you kill a sinless self which killed no one? Most surely, you have done something dreadful”"

play04:34

Bear in mind here that prophet Al-Khidr is not just an ordinary person,

play04:36

He is a symbol of fate

play04:38

And if wasn't that prophet Moses was ordered by our Lord to follow him,

play04:42

And that our Lord told him that He revealed to him a part of the hidden realm,

play04:45

"Then they came upon a servant of Our servants whom We had given mercy from Us

play04:50

and whom We had taught knowledge from Our Own."

play04:53

And that all his deeds are orders of the Almighty God, as He said at the end of Surah.

play04:57

"And I never did it of my own accord."

play04:59

All of what happened were God's orders

play05:01

If it wasn't for Moses being ordered to follow him, he would have held him accountable.

play05:04

He wouldn't have let his actions slip

play05:06

But God willed to teach us that Al-Khidr's actions are just like fate that we don't like

play05:13

Like this car, the tree, illness, etc...

play05:16

They may appear to be bad situations,

play05:18

But actually, they hold great meaning and reward behind them.

play05:21

And, Glory be to God;

play05:22

Although prophet Moses knew such a thing, he couldn't stand it because he is human, after all

play05:27

Humans have similar feelings

play05:29

What's better is that prophet Al-Khidr himself understood and put these feelings into consideration.

play05:33

"He said, “Indeed, youˢᵍ will not be able to endure patiently with me.

play05:36

And how can you endure patiently what you have not encompassed with knowledge?”"

play05:40

How could you be patient, you human, when you see this world's horrors and tests

play05:44

while not knowing the meaning and mercy behind them?!

play05:47

How could you be patient with this sudden test?!

play05:49

How could you be patient with evil, which sometimes wins over good

play05:52

With these poverty, hunger, illness, and death?!

play05:55

How would you be able to be patient

play05:56

when you don't know the wisdom and good things behind them?!

play05:59

But the Almighty God told us at the end of the story

play06:02

That if this kid were to grow older, he would have been such a wicked relentless denier.

play06:06

He would have led his parents to be deniers, too!

play06:08

"And as for the boy, his parents were believers

play06:12

and we feared he would overwhelm them with transgression and denial."

play06:16

"So we wanted their Lord to replace him with someone of better purity and nearer to mercy."

play06:22

Our Lord wanted to cut this suffering short for them

play06:25

And give them another good, believing, and obeying boy.

play06:28

"A mercy from your Lord"

play06:30

Glory be to God!

play06:32

You can rest assured now that you know that, right?

play06:35

But the parents didn’t know that, imagine!

play06:37

They did not know!

play06:38

They didn't know that when this boy grows older, he would overwhelm them with transgression and denial.

play06:43

They even may have been invoking curses on this man who killed their boy

play06:46

Only prophet Moses knew it

play06:48

Then we knew it later when we read that story in Qur'an

play06:51

But the parents did not know

play06:53

They were graced with another good, obeying, and polite boy,

play06:56

And they seek their reward from Allah for the first child,

play06:59

Did you get it?

play07:00

This is the second kind of tests that God told us about

play07:04

This tough test appeared to be REALLY HARD,

play07:08

But it holds all good things and mercy inside it,

play07:10

But you won't have to know that!

play07:12

Just like those parents who didn't know

play07:14

As if God is telling you that if you were subjected to a tough test and you didn't know the wisdom behind it,

play07:19

You should just be patient, accept it, and have good thoughts about your generous God

play07:23

Because it may hold a lot of good things behind it or stave a bigger affliction off you

play07:28

Exactly like this boy's parents

play07:29

But you don't need to know

play07:31

Well, let's ask the question again…

play07:33

Must there be wisdom behind it?

play07:35

I mean, this dramatic end that all people wait for

play07:39

Can the wisdom behind the test be that it drew you closer to God?!

play07:43

Or that it brought you back from a wrong road you were walking on?

play07:46

Can the wisdom behind the test be that it makes you surrender to God's decree, whatever it is?

play07:51

Did the prophet, peace be upon him, not teach us that there is good for the believer in everything?

play07:56

And that the test either increases the reward, raises the degrees,

play08:00

Or remits your evil deeds and misdeeds

play08:02

Isn't it the most beautiful thing about being tested?!

play08:05

A thing that purifies you in the world with a great reward in the Hereafter

play08:08

Then why do we always read about the benefit of patience and being patient?!

play08:11

Did Our Lord not tell us that among the most rewarded people on the Day of Judgment are the patient ones?!

play08:15

"Indeed, the patient ones will be rendered their reward in full without measure"

play08:20

When you come on the Day of Judgment

play08:22

And see that you should have been in a certain level of Paradise, but…

play08:25

You get 1000 levels higher because of your patience!

play08:29

Or that you would have been in a bad place, God forbid,

play08:31

So God graced you with a test and even graced you with being patient, too.

play08:35

To change your position and rescue you from that bad place

play08:38

Isn't it a lot better?!

play08:39

Do you know now why the prophet, peace be upon him, prayed and said:

play08:43

"O Allah, apportion for us of certainty, which shall make the afflictions of the world easy for us,"

play08:50

Because, my friend,

play08:52

At the rough times, you don't need a brain to think of the meaning behind it...

play08:55

You need a HEART that believes and has faith

play08:58

Allah the Almighty said:

play08:59

"No disaster occurs except by Allah's leave. And whoever believes in Allah—He guides his heart."

play09:07

Elaborating on this, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

play09:11

"This āyah is in reference to a person who is struck with a calamity

play09:14

but realizes that it is from Allah, and so he surrenders to it and is pleased."

play09:19

If you are subjected to any severe test, the first thing you should say is:

play09:22

All praise be to Allah,

play09:24

To Allah we belong, and indeed to Him we are returning.

play09:26

And you should be patient and have good thoughts [concerning Allah]

play09:29

And believe that what's gone wasn't really meant to be yours

play09:32

And, as long as God has set that test for you, then it certainly holds so many good things inside it,

play09:37

Even if you can't see it with your eyes!

play09:38

And when you be content and gladly accept it, God will please and be pleased with you.

play09:42

Just like what the Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

play09:44

"Indeed, greater reward comes with a greater trial.

play09:47

And indeed, when Allah loves a people, He subjects them to trials,

play09:50

so whoever is content, then for him is pleasure, and whoever is discontent, then for him is wrath."

play09:55

So, if you believed and had faith,

play09:57

You will reap the reward of faith

play09:58

That we were told about in the third story in the Surah

play10:01

A good man died and left two kids behind

play10:03

And he has saved some money for them and buried them under a wall

play10:07

This wall was about to collapse;

play10:08

Then, the villagers would trick the kids and take their money.

play10:11

But God willed, because of this righteous and faithful man,

play10:15

"and their father was a righteous man,"

play10:17

God willed to send TWO PROPHETS;

play10:19

They came along this way, especially to build the wall with their own hands for them!

play10:24

Imagine that!

play10:25

No, really, can you imagine that?!

play10:26

This man never knew what happened to his children

play10:28

And the kids grew older and found the treasure when they became young men

play10:31

And they never knew what would have happened if it wasn't for God's grace on them.

play10:34

Imagine it when they get to know, on the Day of Judgment, that because of their righteous and faithful father,

play10:39

God has sent two prophets for them to build the wall and save the kid's rights from being stolen!

play10:43

Imagine how generous Our Lord is!

play10:44

This is the third kind of tests

play10:47

The test that God takes away from you without you even know!

So, in short…

play11:10

If you were tested, you should know that it's your fate

play11:13

And that it happens according to God's will, the Almighty.

play11:16

And to pass this test, you have to be patient and content

play11:19

If you get to know the wisdom behind it, then thank God for His grace

play11:22

And if you don't, then don't wait to know...

play11:25

Rather, you should have good thoughts of God and seek the reward

play11:27
