Transcripts
hello and welcome back to the channel
today I'm doing a loop to song video
after talking to lots of producers I
find that it's very common to get a
chord progression you like a drum groove
a bass loop and you really like it but
you don't really know how to break free
from that loop and actually turn it into
a full song you're just sort of stuck in
a 4 or 8 bar loop so in this video I'm
going to be showing you sort of 3
techniques or strategies that you can
use to try and lengthen these loops out
give them a bit of structure and
hopefully create something a lot more
interesting without further delay let's
just get right into it let's start by
just hearing the loop that I started
with it's just on piano and I'm using my
template so I've got piano and a couple
of drum samples but there's no other
instruments or anything else loaded up
here and I'm using FL Studio 20 but
these techniques work in any DOW so you
can hear that it's just three chords
it's looking around first step to break
out of this loop is to try and play it
on an instrument even if you're not very
proficient on an instrument whenever
I've recommended to one of my students
that they do this even if they're not
very well trained or they or they don't
understand music theory just playing
along on an instrument it always leads
to some sort of inspiration so I'm going
to set my camera up here and I'm gonna
play this on my MIDI keyboard the door
can sometimes see a little bit difficult
to be completely creative in so if you
can play an instrument the piano guitar
saxophone whatever it is play along jam
along to your loop see if you add in any
sort of little imperfections or nice
melodies or chords that you like I want
to create something on the piano that
feels a little bit more more like me so
this was our first loop I'll just put
the metronome on
[Music]
and what I'm gonna try to do is just add
in other law notes see if something else
comes to mind
already I like that as a transition
[Music]
you
that already feels like it has a little
more momentum than the original basic
three chords so that could be one idea
now I'm trying to think of the whole
song so I don't want to stay slow like
that I'm gonna try some different
rhythms that was interesting tried a
different chord there I'm going to
actually try skipping that second chord
changing the order of the chords off a
little bit
actually I prefer this chord progression
more than the first one
let's see if that works with that temple
well it's already too slow
so I'm going to just speed up the song
feels about right
you
[Music]
so I actually much prefer this new chord
progression to the old one I had and
might still use the old one in a
different part of the song it might work
really well in the bridge or something
but this is another lesson is try not to
get stuck in your ways to stay open to
change because if you're not open to
changing things your loop will always
just stay a loop I've just cut out a
minute just to save some time in this
tutorial so I've got my new three
patterns so I'll show you this new one
here and I'll show you a few extra
little things I've done to it I've sort
of rolled some of the notes so if you
look here it just adds a little bit more
of a human element to it it makes it
feel not so much like a loop and now
I've got three different patterns so I
have this new pattern that I just came
up with the first pattern and then the
first pattern with that alternate ending
so now what I'm gonna do is add some
structure by adding some markers in for
different sections of the song intro
verse chorus verse there's many
different structures you can follow in
the description of this video I've
written out a few different common
structures for songs so I just select a
little section at the top that's control
left click and drag I press Alt + T and
then add in a marker first one is going
to be called intro then after a bar or
two I'm gonna put in another one called
verse for exact information about how
many bars and measures and beats I'm
skipping between placing these markers
just look in the description it will all
be written down there so I'm gonna take
those first sets of chords I had and
just move those over to the bridge and
for now I'm just going to copy and paste
all my other chords all the way along so
now I have the whole structure laid out
at least a sort of provisional structure
and already you've sort of broken out of
that loop the second part of this
tutorial is about considering the rhythm
and the tone you want to have and then
filling out the whole arrangement with
fresh ideas and fresh musical parts I
find that when it comes to production
the most important things to consider
are just the rhythm and the tone of the
samples and the sounds you're using
consider whether an element is a
rhythmic element or whether it's adding
a tone to the song or whether it's both
I'm going to give a few examples here
I've got the same drum loop playing the
same pattern but with different tone
different drum samples and you'll hear
how
some of them sound a little bit better
than others some might sound more
appropriate for one type of song so here
we go just based on those short examples
you can hear that it's really important
to consider the tone and the rhythm and
how these two actually combine in your
loop I find with the beginners it's very
common to just add in any sound that you
think sounds cool and then you end up
with a song that doesn't really make
sense so definitely listen to some music
you like and think about you know the
guitar tone as well as the guitar rhythm
how the synth is being played as well as
the sound of the synth itself so in this
song I want to have quite an atmospheric
moody sort of vibe I don't want to go
too high energy at the start but I need
something to keep this rhythm because
right now if I turn the metronome off
it's actually difficult to know when the
chords change so I'm going to open up a
new synth
because I need something to let me know
when those chords are supposed to change
I'm gonna use serum because I'm very
very familiar with serum when producing
I think it's important to use a good
blend of sounds that you're familiar
with that you know you can rely on and
also once you're completely unfamiliar
whether and see when it throws into the
mix I've pulled up this simple sine
pulse that I've created in the past and
I'm just going to use that sort of as a
metronome to keep time I like the way it
creates rhythm so if I just press play
with a metronome I'll show you the sort
of idea I have so let's just add that
into a pattern something you'll see me
doing is naming and colouring whilst I'm
adding things into my template it just
makes life a lot easier for me later on
so my latency is pretty high but
actually I'm going to just try recording
this on the MIDI keyboard
so that seemed to work okay so I'm just
gonna copy the copy and paste that
across the whole song I just select it
and then press control B and it just
keeps pace to get into the next pattern
and just for clarity this is more of a
rhythmic element than a tonal element
the tone is just there to be unobtrusive
but the rhythm lets you know when those
chord changes are going to happen you're
going to help the song make more sense
without needing a drum from the start
because if I start right away with a
kick and snare pattern this song is just
going to be really overwhelming now when
I consider the whole balance of the song
we've got a lot of mid-range not a lot
of high and no low end at all so I'm
just gonna right away just get a bass
into here again I'm gonna use serum just
to save time I'm just going to select it
here press ctrl C I'm gonna press f4 to
create a base pattern put that into my
base down here now with serum selected
I'm going to press control V and it's
going to copy those notes across into
the piano roll I'm just going to delete
the top notes and I should be left with
the sub so I've named it I've sent it to
the mixer taking it down in volume
because it was a little bit loud and I'm
not going to start with that I'm just
gonna introduce that in the chorus we've
got a little bit of variety in the song
as the chorus hits him we get a bit more
bass simple
[Music]
and this really is just a tonal element
it's just adding this warm thick tone
under the track is definitely not a
rhythmic baseline at all I do feel that
in the chorus at least the song needs
drums I don't have anything in mind but
as long as you let go of that sort of
illusion of control and just try things
there's no harm at anytime you can just
go file save a new version and you can
always jump back to this old version if
you mess something up so let's just add
in a kick and a snare and see where that
takes us so let's try something
different
[Music]
okay that's not bad but the drum samples
themselves don't match so I could search
for new drum samples for ages or I could
just quickly filter off the top of the
kick and the snare so those are the
drums that come in during the chorus so
I'm going to copy those across to the
second chorus in the second chorus I
might add in a hi-hat or something
different but already we're taking a
little bit of shape here I do feel that
this track is a bit sparse I'm gonna add
some more layers so again I'm just going
to serum use any synth you have but I'm
just trying to use stuff I know because
I don't know what I'm doing entirely for
this one I've just chosen this analog
pad that I like and again I'm just gonna
go to that piano copy create a new
pattern pad so that's named it's colored
sent to the mixer and let's just take a
listen to how this sounds so I won't put
this on at the intro but I might start
this during the verse must take a listen
to this okay that sounds really nice and
warm
[Music]
so there's no real change going into the
chorus so I might just cut away the pad
maybe even cut away the piano going into
the chorus okay we definitely need more
noise there so something I tend to do
when I start struggling is try adding in
strings even if I don't keep it in the
final song it tends to inspire something
from me
so I've added in the same chords as the
piano but I've just added in a few extra
notes and sort of basic melody to see if
that makes it sound a little bit better
[Music]
[Music]
okay so that's starting to work a little
bit better let's copy those strings
across to the chorus it might end up
being that the final chorus gets those
strings but not anything else
now the Keen amongst you will have
noticed that I copied the verse chords
into the bridge so what I'm going to do
is make this pad here unique and I'm
going to copy the bridge chords into
these pads here instead and now I have
this bridge section which is just gives
some chordal relief to the song almost
just a different sound entirely
[Music]
it's also important that right now I
mean I'm just using headphones I'm not
considering the mixing as much as that
sounds like an excuse I can make all
this stuff sound punchy or wide or thick
or 3d later right now I'm just trying to
be creative and come up with ideas I'm
trying to add in sounds that I think
mashed together a little bit while I'm
not adding searing leads over the top of
this or ripping guitar solos because I
don't think it's appropriate and the
third part is to mess around with the
arrangement and try a few different
ideas so in FL studio at least there's
multiple playlists so up in here
playlist arrangement what you can do is
you can clone a playlist just call it
arrangement - now I can say I delete
this part of the chorus here I can go
back to arrangement one and it's still
there so what I'm gonna do is try adding
a few more elements may be changing the
intro something like that so I'm
actually gonna add some staccato strings
and just entirely change the rhythm for
these strings I'm going to be using
these Takato strings inside flax they
sound really really good just like that
so this is what I end up with
[Music]
[Music]
now the reason I chose a second
arrangement to do this will become
apparent right now I can switch between
the two and just see which one I prefer
[Music]
now I think is maybe cool but I don't
actually think it's appropriate so I
don't need to delete anything mute
anything I can just go back to the first
arrangement now although this
arrangement is very simple you can
probably see that the idea is most of
the time start with you know less stuff
add in add in more stuff let it drop
away again add more stuff back in that's
usually how it works it doesn't mean
that your verse has to be quiet and your
chorus has to be loud you could still
have a big wall of energy the whole time
but it's really good to keep introducing
new elements as the song progresses
another thing to consider in this third
step is how you transition your song
from section to section because right
now mine just sort of throws itself into
the next section so we're going to look
at the intro I want to introduce the
song a little bit more subtly than
although that's actually quite nice I'm
going to just print out this chord and
reverse it into itself very very simple
so I'm just recording this piano into an
Edison
just gonna select that can reverse it
add some reverb
to it accept that and let's hear what
this sounds like I'm just going to add
some reverb to that sample just to make
it sound a little bit better and I'm
gonna start with that pulse so let's
take a listen to this
[Music]
so there's still loads of space for an
artist to sing on top probably something
rather sad maybe sort of inspirational
kind of music there's plenty of room for
them to sing what I do notice is that my
verses are far too short so something
I'm going to do is just drag over
everything and probably just make
everything twice as long I feel that
that song is slow it doesn't need to
jump into the chorus right away I just
had a little bit of an idea so I've got
my guitar something I'm gonna do to try
and add a little bit ambience to this
chorus a little bit or maybe a little
bit more high-end even I've got a
channel set up here for my guitar what
if I go just with a load of reverb so
I'm just gonna play a couple of notes
and I'm just gonna see if I can fill out
the chorus with a little bit of just
just a little bit of melody I suppose
[Music]
it's really just something simple like
that I won't be able to record it whilst
the cameras running it's way too much
latency but I'll record that now and
show you what I came up with so let's
listen to what I recorded very simple
but here we go
[Music]
[Music]
so I'm not completely in love with the
playing you know give me a break from on
camera but I actually I think that
already that just sounds so much more
organic so much more real and to be
honest I'm probably gonna try and turn
this into an actual song so I guess the
video worked anyway thank you very much
for watching I do hope this worked so
again those three snaps try to play it
on an instrument because you never know
what will happen you might come up with
entirely new chords or melodies try to
consider carefully the rhythm and tone
you want to go for in your tracks so
that you're not just putting loads of
cool ideas together but that those cool
ideas make sense together and then try
to give yourself a basic arrangement so
that it's almost like a puzzle that you
have to fill out and make sure that at
all times that you leave space for a
vocalist if they're going to be joining
the track later and singing you don't
want to fill up the track completely and
make it a challenge for them to add
their own artistry on top of the track
so thank you very much for watching I
hope that helped and I hope to see you
in the next video - bye for now
you
