I didn't think at this age in my life
that I would be talking about my high
school years to be honest with you but
anyway it is what it is I am carlot
walls laner I am the author of a mighty
long way my journey to Justice at Little
Rock Central High School the book was
published in 2009 it was really an
opportunity for me to tell my story to
leave a legacy for my family as to what
made me want to go to L Rock Central
High School also the foundation that I
came from that I'm hoping to pass on to
my children and grandchildren and my
mother my sister myself my two children
and my nieces and nephews first of all I
elected to go to L Rock Central High
School 147 kids had the opportunity to
go and 119 did apply but 37 of us set
before superintendent of
schools and I thought all 30 was 37 39
of us I thought everyone would be there
on that first day later became known as
the L Rock N due to the media really it
was the journalists that that pretty
much named us not that we went in with
that in mind none of us did all we
wanted to do was to get the best
education possible
period it was a uh a victory to get in I
felt good about at least being able to
go to school everyone was 2 and 1/2 to 3
weeks ahead of me I was going to have to
do that old thing that I grew up with
that you got to be 2 and a/ half times
if not three times better than the white
person and my parents always told me to
be prepared to go through the door
whether it's a crack in the door or
flung wide open once you decide to do
something you see it through I was
taught that at home that's me that's my
middle sister and my youngest
sister the value of
Education I discovered was not only with
my immediate family around me my great
great grandfather had stepped up in
Florida and Georgia and he made the
comment how important education was here
is the person who saw slaves
being uh auctioned off in Atlanta
Georgia and recognize the need for
change to take place and for people to
be educated and he brought that thought
to his
family a lot of people just think of me
as one of the kids of the Little Rock
Nine but there's more to me wife a
mother a grandmother I'm a person who
has been on various boards here in this
city in this state I would like not only
for the black youth but all youth to
understand Civics and history those are
two things that seem to be left out in
their educational system I want them to
be proud of who they
are it's pretty obvious to me by looking
at who is representing Us in Congress
and so forth that they didn't get the
the memo to take history and Civics to
understand how this country was built
there are too many factors out there to
keep a certain group of people down and
with that I want them to be able to
understand that that is happening to
them and that they have a voice and to
use that
