Outlines
🌍 Germany's Untapped Lithium Potential
Germany is home to one of the world's largest lithium deposits, with over 15 million tons of lithium dissolved in the hot springs of Oberreingraben. This lithium could potentially power 5 billion smartphones, a billion home storage units, or 600 million electric vehicles. The extraction process, dubbed 'unlimited', is set to begin in 2024 and is designed to be efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly without wasting water or causing pollution. This revolutionary method uses a lithium 'fishing net' to capture lithium ions from the hot springs. Surprisingly, this process also generates baseload power, making it a win-win situation as it not only extracts lithium but also produces energy, unlike other countries that consume energy for lithium production. This technological advancement aims to propel Germany to the forefront of lithium producers, marking a new era for the economy. Lithium is crucial for batteries and is a key component in devices like smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles. The demand for lithium has tripled since 2017, and a tenfold increase is expected by 2028. Currently, Germany is entirely dependent on imports for its lithium needs, with half coming from Chile and about 25% from China. This dependency is problematic due to potential supply chain disruptions and geopolitical power imbalances. The script emphasizes the need for Germany to utilize its resources and reduce its reliance on imports.
💧 Innovative Lithium Extraction in Germany
The traditional method of lithium extraction involves evaporating lithium-rich water, which is practiced on a massive scale in Chile's Salar de Atacama. However, this method is not desirable in Germany due to its detrimental effects on groundwater reserves and the environment. The 'unlimited' project was initiated to develop a sustainable lithium extraction method. The key innovation is the use of geothermal power plants, which would otherwise be in conflict with lithium production due to competition for the same resource. The project's breakthrough idea was to merge the two industries by finding a way to extract lithium from the geothermal water in a single intermediate step. A special ion sieve with hollow spaces for lithium was developed, allowing the thermal water to flow through while the lithium is trapped in the hollow spaces. The lithium can then be extracted, leaving the rest of the water to pass through the sieve. This method allows for the operation of lithium-geothermal hybrid power plants without the need for vast evaporation areas. The existing geothermal power plants in Germany could be retrofitted with this technology, which has been tested and proven to be cost-effective, with production costs of only 4000 € per ton of lithium. This is competitive with production in China, Malaysia, or Chile, and additionally, it generates electricity without causing environmental issues.
🚗 The Economic Shift in Germany's Auto Industry
The final paragraph discusses the broader economic implications of Germany's potential shift in the lithium industry. It mentions that China has become the world's leading exporter, pushing Germany and Japan off the throne. The paragraph suggests that if Germany had supported a technology invented in the country, it could have avoided this situation. Energie zur lithiumproduktion
verbrauchen ist das bei uns ein
plusgeschäft eine echte Weltneuheit
diese technologische Überlegenheit soll
nun Deutschland an die Weltspitze der
lithiumproduzenten bringen die Rede ist
von einer neuen era für die Wirtschaft
es klingt überambitioniert absurd und
utopisch stimmt aber tatsächlich das
unscheinbare Material wird nämlich jetzt
gerade zum wichtigsten Rohstoff am
gesamten Weltmarkt gezählt als
Grundbaustein für Batterien und Akkus
ist Lithium von zentraler Bedeutung für
die Technik Energie und
mobilitätsbranche wir benötigen Lithium
für sämtliche technische Geräte wie
Handys Tablets Laptops bis hin zu
Bohrmaschinen heimspeichern und
letztendlich auch E-Autos überall wo
Strom gespeichert wird wird auf Lithium
gesetzt laut der IEA stieg die Nachfrage
seit 2017 bis jetzt um knapp das
Dreifache an und bis 2028 wird man eine
Verzehnfachung erwarten Deutschland
könnte von dieser Entwicklung gewaltig
profitieren umso überraschender ist
dadchch aber dass die Industrienation
Deutschland diesen Trend bisher
verschlafen hatte trotz gewaltiger
lithiumvorkommen in ganz Deutschland
unsere gesamte Lithium und
batteriewirtschaft ist vollständig von
Importen abhängig ganze 100% also
wirklich das gesamte Lithium das in
Deutschland genutzt wird kommt aus dem
Ausland etwa die Hälfte aus Chile rund
25% aus China die restlichen Prozente
entfallen auf Taiwan Malaysia und andere
asiatische Regionen problematisch ist
dies aus mehreren Gründen so ist unsere
Wirtschaft letztendlich davon abhängig
dass diese Länder keine Lieferengpässe
oder anderweitige
Versorgungsschwierigkeiten haben jeder
kennt doch die Redewendung in China ist
ein sakreis umgefallen genutzt wird sie
als Metapher für ein unwichtiges
Ereignis eine scherzhaft abfällige
Floskel um die Bedeutungslosigkeit eines
Themas zu beschreiben was interessiert
es mich dann auch wenn im tausenden
Kilometer entfernten China irgendetwas
passiert nun ja bei der aktuellen
lithiumwirtschaft muss der metaphorische
sakreis nur ungünstig fallen und unsere
halbe Industrie steht vollkommen still
örtliche reggenfälle und kleine
Erdrutsche können unsere Industrie und
Energiewende Schwächen dieser Zustand
alleine ist schon nicht tolerierbar
darüber hinaus gibt es aber natürlich
auch ein geopolitisches Machtgefälle
wenn Abhängigkeiten bestehen China Chile
und Co haben unserechnie Energie und
mobilitätsbranche vollkommen in der Hand
eine Machtposition die bei politischen
Entscheidungen zwangsläufig eine Rolle
spielen wird wir müssen uns zweimal
überlegen ob wir z.B tiktok und
chinesische distleister beschränken wen
wenn man uns auch ganz einfach das
Lithium abdrehen kann und selbst wenn
wir solche Machtspiele und
Extremereignisse außen vorlassen eine
Abhängigkeit ist natürlich auch
marktwirtschaftlich betrachtet
hochprblematisch
Kurswechsel her muss wir müssen unsere
verbundsprojekt unlimited ins Leben
gerufen ziel war die Entwicklung einer
schonenden lithiumgewinnung und genau
dieses Vorhaben gelang und wird jetzt im
großen Stil umgesetzt eine
Schlüsselrolle spielen dabei
Geothermiekraftwerke und das obwohl
diese eigentlich mit der
lithiumproduktion in Konflikt stehen
sowohl die Betreiber von
lithiumproduktionsanlagen aber auch die
von Geothermiekraftwerken kämpfen um die
gleiche Ressource bevor wir dazu kommen
aber ganz kurz angemerkt auf diesem
Kanal werfen wir einen Blick hinter die
Kulissen und erklären ganz genau was in
der Welt der Energietechnik jetzt gerade
wirklich passiert wenn du mehr Videos

gerne diesen Kanal es lohnt sich doch
nun zurück zum Thema die heißen
lithiumquellen im oberreingraben sind
eine umkämpfte Ressource aktuell wird
das Wasser gefördert um
Geothermiekraftwerke zu betreiben diese
Pumpen das Wasser aus dem Erdinneren an
die Oberfläche und übertragen in einem
Wärmetauscher die Wärmeenergie an ein
Fernwärmenetz oder an eine
Stromerzeugungsanlage anschließend
fließt das abgekühlte Wasser über eine
zweite Bohrung die sogenannte
Injektionsbohrung wieder zurück in die
Tiefe diese Kraftwerke für die
lithiumförderung abzuschalten kommt
definitiv nicht in Frage aber das ist
auch so gesehen gar nicht nötig beim
Verbundprojekt unlimited kam man auf
eine geniale Idee warum nicht die beiden
Branchen einfach fusionieren im Grunde
müsste man einfach nur einen Weg finden
das Lithium im hochgepumpten
Thermalwasser in einem einzigen
Zwischenschritt irgendwie zu extrahieren
und das gelang entwickelt wurde dafür
ein spezielles ionensieb ein Gitter mit
Hohlräumen für Lithium fließt das
Thermalwasser durch dieses durch bleibt
das Lithium in den kleinen Hohlräumen
hängen exakt wie Fische in einem
Fischernetz das Lithium kann
anschließend aus dem Gitter extrahiert
werden die restlichen Bestandteile
passieren das Sieb jedoch problemlos so
gesehen also nur ein winziger
zusätzlicher Schritt beim Betrieb eines
ganz normalen
Geothermiekraftwerks anstatt also
gigantische Landstriche in
verdunstungsanlagen zu verwandeln kann
man mit diesem Lithium Fischernetz
einfach Lithium Geothermie
hybridkraftwerke betreiben vorhandene
Geothermiekraftwerke könnte man ganz
Technologie ist also ganz klar
konkurrenzfähig und diese Daten wurden
auch in der Praxis bestätigt eine
Pilotanlage von unlimited hat im Januar
2023 die experimentelle
lithiumproduktion im oberreingraben
erfolgreich gemeistert nun sind etliche
Firmen daran dieses und Verwandte
Ansätze im großen Stil anzuwenden
nennenswert sind diesbezüglich vor allem
besttech hydrogen und und EnBW spannend
ist aber auch walkckan energy dieses
Unternehmen möchte noch 2024 die
großtechnische Produktion starten das
Unternehmen wartet einzig und allein nur
noch auf die Genehmigung zur Bohrung all
das kurbelt jetzt die Wirtschaft an AMG
hat bereits angekündigt eine
weiterverarbeitungsanlage von deutschem
Lithium aufzubauen angeschlossen haben
sich diesem Vorhaben nun auch
ausländische Unternehmen in
brandenburgischen Gruben plant das
kanadische Unternehmen rocktech für 2024
eine ähnliche Manufaktur hier soll
Lithiumhydroxid speziell für Batterien
hergestellt werden es herrscht allgemein
eine
goldgräbtimmung die Aussage dass eine
kertwende in der Wirtschaft ersichtlich
ist deckt sich zweifelsfrei mit der
Datenlage immer wieder liest man davon
dass Deutschland als Industriestandort
unattraktiv wird in der
lithiumwirtschaft scheint sich das Blatt
aber jetzt gewaltig zu wenden und zur
Wahrheit gehört auch Deutschland kann
noch die Kurve bekommen hierfür müssen
aber Industrie Politik und Wissenschaft
Hand in Hand gehen spannend ist in
diesem Kontext unsere Analyse über die
deutsche Autoindustrie China ist Export
weleltmeister geworden und hat
Deutschland und Japan vom Thron gestoßen
das alles wäre aber vermeidbar gewesen
wenn man eine Technologie die hier in
Deutschland mit erfunden wurde einfach
nur gefördert hätte wenn du mehr darüber
