📦 Apple TV
🔄 Apple TV

Transcripts
The Apple TV is really underrated.
And I'm going to tell you why.
This little black box from Apple
is one of the most overlooked products that they market today.
This is a media player, a home hub, an extension of your Mac
and iPhone, a gateway device and a gaming console
all in a tiny package, which makes absolutely zero sound.
I was one of the many doubters of this product.
Why would anyone buy an Apple TV when most modern TVs
have some form of operating system and a built in app store?
Well, it ultimately comes down to efficiency, ease of use and lifespan.
One of the main issues with modern TVs is that their operating systems
are painfully slow.
The apps take forever to load,
and they're responsiveness is something left to be desired.
For example, here's a little task for you if you own a smart TV.
Turn it on.
Boot up the home page for apps and launch a streaming service or YouTube.
Tell me how long it takes.
Now try switching between apps.
It's painfully slow, isn't it?
On my TV, it can take up to 45 seconds from start to finish, whereas
with my Apple TV, I simply hit the power on button on the Siri remote.
It turns on the TV, boots up either the home page or the last app
I was using, and instantly I'm able to watch content.
The interface is so fluid and fast.
I can even switch between multiple apps and still have time to spare.
This is because
TVs are TV's first and computers second.
The chips they use are not very powerful and obviously the smart
functions are a second thought when it comes to the user experience.
The Apple TV is built as an entertainment hub from the ground up,
using the same chips that have been used in their pro iPhones and iPads.
This chip has a six core 64 bit CPU with a five core GPU.
This means you get the same speed,
reliability and efficiency that your iPhone or iPad has.
Along with the added bonus of being so simplified
and niched down into one system that it performs excellent from simple
tasks like media playback all the way to gaming.
One big issue with smart TVs these days is that they are being sold
with adverts built into the smart features.
To me that is an absolutely huge smack in the face to the consumer who's already
paid anything from a few hundred to several thousand pounds for this TV.
The Apple TV, however, has an interface that is simple, familiar and responsive.
Anyone who's used an iPhone or iPad will feel instantly at home.
It's easy to organize apps, create folders, and as it is an Apple product,
it links together with all of your other Apple devices and services.
If you're watching something on your iPhone, Mac or iPad
and want to see it on the big screen, simply cast it to the Apple TV
and it will instantly display with a lag free experience.
You can even work from your television using the Apple TV.
For couples who have a TV in their bedroom, being in the Apple
ecosystem allows you to easily connect your AirPods to the Apple TV.
So for those times when one of you doze off, the more wide awake
of you can carry on enjoying your TV show or videos like this one
without disturbing the other's beauty sleep.
But all of
this was a second thought to the main reason I purchased it.
I bought an Apple TV for one specific app.
Steam Link.
Steam Link allows me to stream games over my network to my Apple
TV and play any game that supports a controller.
As someone who enjoys playing story driven games, not sat at my desk
using a keyboard and mouse,
this made for the best couch or in my case, bed gaming sessions.
I was a late adopter to the Jedi Fallen order game.
I've actually
owned it for quite some time, but I never wanted to play it at my desk.
So what I did was pick up an Apple TV
and a PS5 Dualsense controller and I was hooked from that point.
Every night I'd spend an hour or two playing it, sat in bed.
The experience was flawless.
My Apple TV has an Ethernet port, so the connection never dropped
and the quality was almost identical to the PC.
There was maybe a few milliseconds of lag
between my PC monitor and the image displayed on my TV,
but it was never enough to affect gameplay or controller inputs.
Now gaming on the Apple TV isn't all great.
There are services like Apple Arcade and a few games on the App Store,
but honestly, the game selection is pretty poor.
There is a hell of a lot of indie games and arcade style racing games,
but none of them I found
gave me a real satisfaction or craving to play them a second time.
It's a shame as there are some big titles coming to Apple's MacBook lineup
and with their metal API being able to scale to system requirements,
I was hoping we'd see some of these larger titles being able to run,
maybe even at a lower resolution on the Apple TV.
This to me seems like an Apple Silicon powered Apple TV
must be coming in the future, as it would mean developers could create games
that would run on almost every single Apple device.
Here's hoping we actually do get that in the future.
There's also the issues that I have personally with the remote.
I do love the size,
layout and feel of it, but it can be very temperamental at times.
The touchpad, while being extremely useful and fast for navigating
the homescreen, is such a nightmare when watching YouTube.
I can't count on my hands how many times I've accidentally scrolled
30 seconds either way while trying to scroll through a video.
It's a bit too sensitive.
Another bonus feature of the Apple TV like the HomePod and HomePod
Mini is the ability to use this as a hub for your smart products.
So if you are heavily invested in HomeKit products, this is a must have purchase.
This allows you to create automation scenes and location based tasks.
For example, if you have a smart light, you can set them to turn on
and when you return home, or at a certain time
or entirely by themselves as a security feature.
My main example of this is one I've spoke about in my HomePod mini video.
As soon as my phone connects to my
wi fi on returning home, my accent lights in my room turn on.
Oh, providing it's at a certain time, of course.
And as the Apple TV is always plugged in, whereas sometimes
I unplug my HomePod, it makes for a perfect home hub.
And finally, a great feature for consuming media
in general is the ability
to use your iPhone to calibrate the color output of your Apple TV
to match the original content that is being displayed on your TV.
You simply place your iPhone face down on the TV
when prompted and let it cycle through a range of colors.
It's an incredibly smart and user friendly feature that takes away
the need to use a third party color calibrating tool.
Obviously, it's quite an expensive media player when you think about it.
I picked up the ethernet version with 128 gigabytes of storage
and at the time of filming it is £169.
Now, you can probably buy a small smart TV for that price, but
this is where you need to show the value of a smart TV versus an Apple TV.
A smart TV has a short shelf life.
There are lots of reports of companies pulling apps from the smart TV stores
because they are no longer viable to run on those TVs or they're just too big.
This greatly reduces the value of those TVs.
The way an Apple TV becomes value for money is that this will be supported
for years to come.
You only need to look at the iPhone, support life to see this iPhones
last six or more years with software and security updates.
And as this uses
the same technology as an iPhone, you can expect it to last just as long.
For example, the first generation of Apple TV was launched in 2007
and support was discontinued in 2015.
That is eight years of support
for a first generation product, and it didn't even sell that well.
So think of it this way.
Your Apple TV will give you potentially
eight years of media streaming on demand services, gaming,
smart home integration, fitness services, and potentially even more in the future
when new apps and features are announced with the new version of Apple TV software.
So that is why I
think the Apple TV is a very underrated product
and it's something you should definitely consider looking into.
Thank you so much for watching this video.
If you enjoyed it, please give it a thumbs up.
If not, try watching it again. Take care.
