I am sending my messenger ahead of you

welcome to BT what do you do when it's

all too much what do you do when the

whelming becomes overwhelming and you

try and you try and you try and you try

but you can't get no satisfaction you

can't find what you think you are

looking for or what you need these

messages are called looking for light

because we know that so many people are

looking for a guiding light to help them

find something with meaning to find

something that satisfies this is the

human condition the human struggle we're

looking for something more that will

truly satisfy and many of us have not

found it yet we go to all sorts of

people we go to all manner of things

hoping they will satisfy and give us the

life we need there's a story in the life

of Jesus from John chapter 6 it's a

story for humans who are overwhelmed who

can't find no satisfaction and who have

lamps that are growing dim I'm gonna

tell the story and then share a few

reflections so Jesus has just healed a

man and then he engages in this tense

argument with religious leaders about

who he is and who God is

the crowds who've been kind of gathering

and have been on looking for four

chapters now in the in the Gospel of

John the crowds they're just growing

more and more amazed by Jesus he has

miraculous powers he's doing signs and

wonders he's standing up to the central

powers he's calling out religious

hypocrisy and after all this happens he

leaves Jerusalem at the end of chapter

five and he goes back up to his home

region by the Sea of Galilee

Mista where chapter six begins a huge

crowd of people are following him

they've been seeing the signs they've

been seeing the sick find healing and

Jesus sees these crowds and he goes up

on a mountain and he sits with his

disciples

and oh yeah the Passover festival is

coming up John throws that into this

part of the story because it's going to

be important in the rest of the chapter

which we'll get to in upcoming episodes

but Jesus goes up to this mountain and

he looks out and he sees the huge crowd

coming towards him Jesus has

Compassion's for crowds he wants to see

them taken care of he wants them to have

a good shepherd one of his main

frustrations that we see in these

Gospels is that he does not believe that

these huge herding crowds have good

Shepherds and good leaders the leaders

of Israel have failed to be good

shepherds and Jesus longs for these

people to find what they are looking for

to be guided and well-fed and brought to

a place where they can be satisfied they

live in need these crowds and they have

not found what they're looking for in

this world so Jesus sees the crowds and

he asked to fill up one of his friends

where can we buy enough bread to take

care of all these people this is a test

Jesus has a plan

Philip response several thousand dollars

worth of bread wouldn't be enough to

give even a tiny bit to everyone we

don't have the money

Jesus even if we had a ton of money that

would only give people a little it

wouldn't feed them they wouldn't be well

fed they wouldn't be satisfied Andrew

chimes in hey there's a kid here with

five loaves of bread and two fish but

second thought what does this matter for

this huge crowd what does it matter for

a huge crowd like this and then Jesus

says hey please organize and seat the

people there's a lot of people there's

about 5,000 men and then probably women

and children as well but thankfully

there's a lot of grass too so all the

people find a spot and sit down the

disciples and his followers kind of make

that happen

Jesus takes the loaves he gives thanks

and then he starts passing the bread out

to those sitting the bread is prayed

over and then passed and then the fish

too is passed with people taking all

they want they begin to take all they

wants until they are satisfied

and when everyone is satisfied he tells

his followers gather up the leftover so

nothing will be lost they gather up 12

baskets of leftovers the people see this

sign they are amazed this guy is the

Prophet he's the one we've been waiting

for and Jesus sees that they're about to

come seize him to try to make him the

king and he slips back into the mountain

and hides to be alone now make no

mistake these crowds are hurting they

can't find satisfaction they're not

whelmed but overwhelmed these are the

tired ones the hungry ones the huddled

masses yearning to be free their world

is not right and they are not satisfied

but Jesus loves them Jesus loves the

world and he has a special heart for the

tired the poor the hurting the longing

Jesus says blessed are the poor in

spirit blessed who are those who are

hungry and thirsty for they will be

satisfied and find the kingdom of God so

in this scene he takes what little they

have that they give to him and from his

thankful hands the little is multiplied

it is given back and it satisfies what

they received from his hand satisfies

what Jesus gives satisfies and what we

received from his hands bring

satisfaction you might think I don't

have enough honey money to handle what's

in front of me you might think I don't

have enough supplies for this task you

might think I am not enough for this

moment and you might be right you might

have all sorts of questions you might

have all manner of fears but here's what

Jesus offers you says give me what you

have give me what you have

give me your five loaves and your two

fish I will give thanks for it I will

bless it and what you receive from my

hand will be enough for you to be

satisfied and it will be enough to

satisfy others and there will be more

give me what you have and then receive

from my hands receiving from me what I

give will satisfy you receiving from me

what I give and giving to others will

satisfy others if you were looking for

more light

with just a dim candle then give Jesus

your dim light and he will make it a

shining beacon to light your way and to

be a light for others looking for light

give him your little light and see what

he will do you might make it a beacon

for exiles for the tired for the poor

for the hurting it might be a light for

the wretched refuse a light for the

homeless and tempest-tossed give Jesus

what you have and you might find that he

gives you back something that satisfies

and it gives you more to help you

satisfy others who are hurting Jesus

meets us at our Wix end he meets us when

our lamp is dim he meets us when we

throw our hands up and say are you

kidding me how am I gonna pay for this

are you kidding me what am I gonna do

now there's too much and too many for me

in that space Jesus is ready to

transform our little he is ready to give

from his hand so that we might find

satisfaction I'm going to read the story

again I'll read the story right from

that from the scriptures and the Gospel

of John and then I'll pray for us

after this Jesus went to the other side

of the Sea of Galilee also called the

sea of Tiberias a large crowd kept

following him because they saw the signs

that he was doing for the sick Jesus

went up the mountain and sat down there

with his disciples now the Passover the

festival of the Jews was near when he

looked up and saw a large crowd coming

toward him Jesus said to Philip where

are we to buy bread for these people to

eat he said this to test him for he

himself knew what he was going to do

Philip answered him six months wages

would not buy enough bread for each of

them to get a little one of his

disciples Andrew Symonds simon Peters

brother said to him there's a boy here

who has five barley loaves and two fish

but what are they among so many people

Jesus said make the people sit down now

there was a great deal of grass in the

place so they sat down about five

thousand and all then Jesus took the

loaves and when he had given thanks he

distributed them to those who were

seated so also the fish as much as they

wanted when they were satisfied he told

his disciples gather up the fragments

left over so that nothing may be lost so

he gathered them up and from the

fragments of the five barley loaves left

by those who had eaten they filled

twelve baskets when they saw the sign

that he had done they began to say this

is indeed the prophet who is to come

into the world when Jesus realized they

were about to come and take him by force

to make him King

he withdrew again to the mountain by

himself did you pray with me

you have compassion for the crowds we

know there are large groups of people

just hurting and struggling right now

there's pain and circumstances on the

outside but pain and circumstances on

our insides as well confusion fear hurt

pain regret we all come to moments in

our lives where we throw our hands up

and say we are not enough we don't have

enough for the moment we're in it help

us give what we have to you lord help us

receive from your hands what you have

for us

help us receive from your hands what you

have for us let it be enough let us

satisfy and let it overflow so that more

can be given to others Lord you are the

provider you are the abundant provider

for those who feel like they don't have

enough today I pray that they would come

to you I pray that you might give them a

vision a picture you might reveal

yourself and show them that you are more

than enough for this moment for this

hour and in every moment in every hour

thank you Jesus for who you are for what

you've done for how you love and have

compassion for us all it's in your name

we pray in that prayer that the Lord

would bless you and keep you make his

face shine upon you and give you his

peace cast your cares upon him receive

from his hand and fine
