two months after retiring from football

play00:02

sports is still a big part of David

play00:04

Beckham's life he remains one of the

play00:07

most recognizable Sportsmen in the world

play00:10

and one group of school children are

play00:12

about to get a big surprise we have an

play00:15

extra special guest coming to join us

play00:17

for our session I'd like to welcome Sky

play00:20

ambasador David Beckham David

play00:28

Beckham

play00:33

David was visiting a school in Bedford

play00:35

where sport has transformed

play00:40

lives after proving he's still as active

play00:43

as ever we spoke about his latest

play00:45

Mission first of all how do we introduce

play00:48

you is it former footballer Ambassador

play00:52

model father Mr Posh Spice what do you

play00:55

prefer um David's good pretty good I've

play00:59

had the retired football quite a few

play01:00

times in the last few weeks so uh D just

play01:03

David's good just done with that one now

play01:05

you're here today as part of Sky Sports

play01:08

living for sports program tell us about

play01:11

that and why you wanted to get involved

play01:14

I wanted to get involved because

play01:15

obviously I've um gained so much from

play01:19

being in a sport from being in football

play01:22

um and when I was 8 n years old you know

play01:26

I was always looking for a mentor you

play01:29

know a mentor in kind of in sport in

play01:31

life you know I had my parents but you

play01:34

know I wanted someone else to look up to

play01:37

and obviously myself being a Manchester

play01:38

United fan you know Brian Robson for me

play01:42

was someone that I looked up to someone

play01:44

that achieved uh so much in in you know

play01:48

his sport I wanted to achieve the same

play01:51

thing you know I wanted to wear the same

play01:53

jerseys as him I wanted to Captain

play01:55

England I wanted to represent England um

play01:59

and I think what sky have created here

play02:02

is something where you know young kids

play02:05

are able to look up to you know athletes

play02:08

like sir Chris Hoy like Jess Andis you

play02:11

know like other athletes that are

play02:13

involved in this initiative um and they

play02:17

can be their mentors and that's the

play02:19

special thing and that's why I you know

play02:21

personally wanted to be involved and how

play02:24

much of a difference can it make to

play02:26

Young people's lives getting involved

play02:28

with sports you know it's something that

play02:31

I'm very proud of what I've done in my

play02:32

career and obviously to now go on to

play02:35

something like this where I'm kind of

play02:37

giving back in a way that is helping the

play02:39

future of you know future of our country

play02:43

or future you know sporting Heroes

play02:46

that's it's something special for me

play02:47

it's all right to be different you know

play02:49

it's all right to make sacrifices like I

play02:51

said before I made I made sacrifices

play02:54

when I was your age and some of my

play02:56

friends wanted to go and hang out down

play02:58

the street on the shop corner you know

play03:00

uh skateboard parks you know and there's

play03:04

nothing wrong with going to skateboard

play03:05

park but if you want to want to be

play03:10

successful and if you want to do certain

play03:14

things and want to be c a certain person

play03:16

then there are sacrifices that you make

play03:19

and do you think enough is being done at

play03:22

Schools they're talking now about

play03:23

bringing back competitive sport how

play03:26

important do you think that would be to

play03:28

encourage the elite Sports men and women

play03:30

of the

play03:31

future for me personally I think you

play03:34

know uh competitiveness is really

play03:37

important in in children's lives um in

play03:42

in many ways um I think it has to be

play03:44

fair of course you know because uh you

play03:47

know a couple of my sons go to a school

play03:49

that is very competitive but in a way

play03:51

that um also helps the children that are

play03:54

not winning the races are not winning

play03:56

the football you know they're helping

play03:58

them in many other ways so I think you

play04:00

know what what children are doing

play04:03

nowadays you know things have to be

play04:06

competitive you know it's important for

play04:08

the future of you know the sport going

play04:11

forward I think you know because when

play04:14

you get to a certain point in your life

play04:16

as a child you know 16 17 it really

play04:19

becomes competitive and if you haven't

play04:21

learned that from a young age um I I

play04:24

think that you know that could affect

play04:27

the way children are you know when they

play04:29

go into different sports but like I said

play04:31

it's also important that if they're not

play04:33

the best football players if they're not

play04:35

the best tennis players that doesn't

play04:37

mean to say they're not going to have a

play04:38

future in that game you know they might

play04:40

go on to be a coach you know some of the

play04:43

best footballing managers in the world

play04:45

are you know not ex footballers you know

play04:49

and they've not kicked the ball before

play04:50

in in their life so you know that says a

play04:53

lot I think that's what's important to

play04:55

to have that competitiveness but also

play04:58

have a heart you know that actually puts

play05:01

their arm around a kid and says just

play05:03

because you've not won a race it doesn't

play05:04

mean that you're not good at that Sport

play05:06

and it doesn't mean that you can't enjoy

play05:08

that sport if you enjoy it it doesn't

play05:10

matter it doesn't matter if you're the

play05:12

best at it that's not the most important

play05:14

thing in the world you know if you enjoy

play05:16

doing a sport you do it I was listening

play05:18

to a conversation of a group of young

play05:21

kids that were waiting to do their

play05:23

events and I heard one of the boys turn

play05:25

around and say I might go and do the

play05:27

javelin and one of his friends turn

play05:29

around to him and say why would you go

play05:30

and do that that's

play05:32

embarrassing and something like that I

play05:34

actually turned around to the little boy

play05:35

and said go and do the javelin if you

play05:37

want to do the javelin it's not about

play05:39

it's about having your own opinion it's

play05:41

about believing in yourself and you know

play05:44

that's part of being successful has your

play05:46

exercise routine changed then since you

play05:49

retired you know how have things like

play05:50

that changed well I think obviously I've

play05:52

had 22 years in professional football so

play05:55

I needed time to kind of uh let my body

play05:58

rest because I've had a couple of bad

play06:00

injuries over the last three or four

play06:01

years and um you know I I kind of left

play06:05

working out alone for a few weeks and

play06:07

then I kind of slowly got back into it

play06:09

but obviously having four children

play06:10

you're constantly running around and

play06:12

doing stuff anyway and I've been busy

play06:14

with other stuff but I think it's so

play06:16

important for any person to stay fit and

play06:19

healthy just for health reasons more

play06:21

than anything and how active are your

play06:25

children then how do you encourage them

play06:27

to you know get do more activities well

play06:29

as a parent I've always been obviously a

play06:32

sportsman kind of that has always been

play06:35

outside keeping active keeping fit and

play06:38

I've kind of embeded that into my

play06:40

children uh I think it's so important

play06:42

that parents do that because I think

play06:44

it's so important in not just to be a

play06:48

sportsman sportswoman I think it's

play06:50

important in life you know for for kids

play06:52

to stay healthy for kids to stay fit to

play06:54

eat the right things to drink the right

play06:56

things and I think that's what's so

play06:58

important it's not just about about you

play07:00

know becoming a great Sportsman it's

play07:02

about you know staying healthy in life

play07:05

and I have this image of you all kind of

play07:08

in the back Garden having a kick around

play07:09

with Victoria there as well is that what

play07:11

happens she's up at 6:30 every morning

play07:14

running is she yeah so she's very fit

play07:17

start and Harper sits there and watches

play07:19

her so she's learning but um no the boys

play07:22

are always out they're always doing some

play07:24

kind of sport and it's not you know it

play07:27

doesn't have to be football just because

play07:29

dad's a football player or a retired

play07:31

football player um doesn't mean that

play07:33

they'll naturally go into that game you

play07:36

know maybe they will if they do then

play07:37

great but you know I just want them to

play07:39

be outside I want them to be outside

play07:41

playing instead of sitting and watching

play07:43

TV and you know and and doing all that

play07:45

kind of stuff because there are you know

play07:47

we spoke about it with the kids there's

play07:49

so many distractions out there and it's

play07:51

about you know that focus and when

play07:53

children have had focus and got that

play07:55

Focus you know there's they they become

play07:57

so determined do you secretly hope

play08:00

though that one of them will follow in

play08:01

your footsteps of course of course I do

play08:03

you know i' I'd love one of them to be a

play08:06

football player it might end up being

play08:07

Harper she might go into it I mean we

play08:11

shouldn't show Victoria this but um I

play08:14

think you know if one of the boys go on

play08:16

to to play football then then great but

play08:19

um I I I just want them to be happy I

play08:22

want them to be healthy and I want them

play08:23

to be fit and simple as that and talking

play08:26

about children I have to ask you we have

play08:29

the Royal birth coming up very

play08:32

shortly uh what advice would you give to

play08:36

William and Kate I know your friends

play08:38

what advice would you give them because

play08:39

you're a bit of an expert now they're

play08:40

going to be firsttime parents uh I don't

play08:43

think they need my my advice I think

play08:44

they've got so many

play08:47

amazing uh mentors and you know parents

play08:51

around them you know I think that's and

play08:53

grandparents you know I think they'll

play08:55

learn from them and um I think William

play08:58

and I think Kate's going to be they're

play09:00

going to be amazing parents because

play09:01

they're so loving towards children you

play09:03

see the way they are and you know

play09:06

obviously I've I've seen more of William

play09:07

than I have of Kate but I think you know

play09:10

William has been in all of our lives for

play09:14

for so many years and we've seen him

play09:16

grow from that from that young boy into

play09:19

an unbelievable gentleman and I think

play09:22

that's that's an amazing quality that he

play09:25

shows and I think you know that as a

play09:28

father is is so important and any advice

play09:31

on baby names for them in that case cuz

play09:33

I know you know you went for different

play09:35

things well they yeah that's a good bad

play09:37

you think they should go for David I

play09:38

think they should go for David if a boy

play09:41

now we've just had the Lions win we've

play09:43

had Andy Murray winning Wimbledon we've

play09:46

got the ashes on as well are you hoping

play09:48

it's going to be another Great British

play09:50

sporting summer um already has been um

play09:55

you know I think that uh you know in the

play09:58

last week as has been incredible I was

play10:00

in Singapore and I was lucky enough to

play10:01

be sat next to an Australian guy that uh

play10:05

wasn't very happy at the meal I must

play10:07

admit he was uh very down about the uh

play10:10

about the Lions but um you know I packed

play10:12

him on the back a few times and just

play10:13

mentioned uh the result but it's so

play10:17

amazing for us to have you know so much

play10:19

success I think obviously with the Lions

play10:21

it's it's incredible to for for children

play10:25

to watch the the success that we've had

play10:27

um and then obviously with

play10:29

you know after after the Olympics last

play10:31

year and after obviously what happened

play10:34

at wimon last year you know I

play10:36

think everyone really was so behind him

play10:40

this time um obviously they was behind

play10:42

him last time but I think what he went

play10:45

through and his speech that I was in the

play10:48

crowd after that and it was kind of you

play10:50

know it was heart really got to everyone

play10:54

I think to perform like he did in that

play10:57

heat with that pressure you know playing

play10:59

playing at home I know what it's like as

play11:00

an England player to play in front of

play11:02

our own fans it's it's one of the best

play11:04

feelings but it's also there's a certain

play11:06

amount of pressure I think you know Andy

play11:09

showed so many times throughout the

play11:11

whole competition you know how tough he

play11:14

is mentally and and physically of course

play11:16

and it's a proud moment for everyone and

play11:19

can you believe it is nearly a year now

play11:22

since you markk the start of the

play11:24

Olympics that speedboat moment down the

play11:26

T but is there a worry that the Legacy

play11:29

hasn't lived up to expectation you're an

play11:31

ambassador for it you're a really big

play11:33

part in all of it how do you feel about

play11:35

that I think the legacy of the Olympics

play11:38

will always be there I don't think that

play11:41

anyone can question that because I think

play11:44

that our country do things in a way

play11:47

where we're very famous for how we bring

play11:51

Sportsmen through and how we continue

play11:54

the Legacy uh of a big competition and I

play11:57

think the way we ran that Olympics the

play12:01

way we was kind of involved in for me

play12:05

one of the most successful Olympics uh

play12:08

that there has been uh you know I

play12:10

obviously haven't been to all of them

play12:12

but um I've seen many of them and and to

play12:15

be part of this one in in our own

play12:16

country in part of London where I grew

play12:19

up you know that was very special um and

play12:22

like I said we will keep that Legacy

play12:24

going because you know it's what we do

play12:26

challenges are good uh challenges always

play12:28

bring the best out in people it shows

play12:31

aside of you that um sometimes you've

play12:34

not seen before or other people have not

play12:36

seen before so challenges for me uh are

play12:39

really important in life and finally

play12:42

what is next for you now there's talk

play12:45

about you maybe owning a Major League

play12:47

Soccer Club there's talk about you you

play12:50

know being a pundit or you going to

play12:52

continue the modeling or even these

play12:54

acting rumors that we might see you in

play12:56

bond what apparently so no that was just

play12:58

another one of these Golden Balls moment

play13:01

that Victoria kind of threw out there

play13:02

and it kind of stuck so apparently I'm

play13:05

uh going to be the next Bond cing to my

play13:07

wife but uh no that's not true um I've

play13:10

obviously had a few offers from

play13:12

different people regarding um movies

play13:15

over the years and you know I think I'm

play13:18

better sticking to the sport that I

play13:20

actually know punditry I think I'm going

play13:22

to leave that to Gary you know I'm not

play13:24

going to get involved in that because

play13:25

he's so good at it and he's always been

play13:27

great at talking so I think think I'll

play13:29

leave that to him um but the MLS uh

play13:33

football club is something that I'm

play13:35

obviously very involved in because I

play13:38

have the option to to own a club in uh

play13:40

in America and when I moved there I I

play13:44

committed to the league and I committed

play13:46

to the sport in that country and making

play13:47

it bigger um and if is if this is the

play13:50

way that I can give back in that sense

play13:52

then uh to own a franchise to own a team

play13:55

would be very special and and something

play13:57

that you know I'm really interested in

play13:59

I'm not interested in being a manager I

play14:02

love coaching kids I love being involved

play14:04

in days like today with the kids but um

play14:07

being an owner is something that I'm a

play14:09

lot more interested in than anything

play14:11

else and are you back here in England so

play14:13

is this where you're planning to call

play14:15

home from now on um London will always

play14:17

be our home you know that's uh never

play14:19

going to change but you know we've uh

play14:21

we've got a home in La still um we

play14:24

regard that as as a place where we had

play14:27

such an amazing time living there and

play14:29

the American people kind of welcomed

play14:32

them welcomed us like one of their own

play14:35

and that was that was very special so

play14:37

we're spending a bit of time in London

play14:40

we're also spending a bit of time in in

play14:41

America so um we're kind of jumping from

play14:44

place to place okay well David Beckham

play14:46

thank you very much for talking to us

play14:48

here on Sky News thank you
