Highlights
Jeremiah Wolf discusses the resources he used while studying for the CCIE certification, focusing on books that were particularly helpful.
He highly recommends 'Routing TCP Volume One Second Edition' for its comprehensive coverage of routing protocols and historical context.
The book provides insights into why protocols work the way they do, enhancing comprehension.
CCIE Routing and Switching volumes one and two are also recommended, offering around 1450 pages of in-depth information.
Narbick and Peter Pollock are the authors of the CCIE Routing and Switching books, with Peter Pollock having been the CCIE program head.
Reading these books fills in knowledge gaps and provides a solid foundation in traditional routing and switching.
Cisco SD-WAN book serves as a study guide for the certification and is useful for understanding software-defined networking.
Software-defined networking is a growing field, but staying up-to-date with documentation is crucial due to its rapidly changing nature.
Software-Defined Access book is considered okay, with small, dense screenshots making it difficult to read but still containing useful information.
All IP Multicast Volume One is a challenging read but necessary for understanding multicast, which is heavily featured on the CCIE exam.
IPv6 Networks book makes understanding IPv6 easier and is recommended for those finding IPv6 intimidating.
Python is required for the CCIE exam, and the book recommended is approachable and conversational in style, making it an easy read.
CCI Enterprise Infrastructure Foundation book comes with a 2500-page lab guide after registration, which is considered a complete package for CCIE preparation.
Cisco Validated Design guides are recommended for additional reading, as they may contain specific questions that appear on the exam.
Jeremiah emphasizes the importance of making notes after the exam and researching further due to the specificity of some exam questions.
He suggests that the current CCIE exam format may need to change due to the complexity and time-consuming nature of software-defined tasks.
The video concludes with a promise of a future video comparing the CCIE book to the Narbix course and the actual exam.
Transcripts
hello and welcome back to my basement
This is Jeremiah wolf and in this video
we're going to talk about some of the
resources I used
in studying for the ccie this video
specifically about books I'm going to be
making some other videos about some of
the other resources so stay tuned I
didn't want to do one giant video
because people don't don't watch those
so just to try to help people out and
actually make it more easily to consume
so let's go ahead and we'll get started
again these are just the books that I
read
um all right so starting off routing TCP
volume one second edition this is a
phenomenal book it is absolutely
phenomenal I can't say I cannot say
enough good about this book it is so
well written it is so well written you
learn so much just not only just about
the protocols
um and don't be don't be put off just
because it says routing it says routing
TCP I think when I first saw this book I
thought it was just about just about TCP
like a thousand Pages just about tcpap
which I'm sure they could write but this
is about all the different routing
protocols and and everything uh it's
it's pretty comprehensive
um just it's a it's a fantastic book and
it goes into a lot of the history behind
the protocols and it's what's
interesting is
when you learn the history of the
protocols oftentimes it helps you to
understand how they work why they work
the way they do it really makes
comprehension a lot better so
um I just I absolutely love this this
book it's two books actually volume one
uh and volume two the first one 944
Pages second one almost 1200 Pages
fantastic books uh absolutely uh must
read in my opinion
next we go into CCI routing and
switching in volume one volume two
volume one volume two so about 800 pages
and 650 Pages for the two volumes very
good books uh written by narbick and
Peter Pollock and Peter as I I'm pretty
sure was the ccie program head
uh for a while at least I don't think he
is any more but he was until maybe a
year or two ago
I'm pretty sure about that really good
books the thing that I like is between
the tcpip and the routing and switching
you're getting you're filling in a lot
of the gaps so one book might not really
go into detail about one thing but the
other book will vice versa there is a
couple things that seem to contradict
each other very minor very very minor
but it's going to get you thinking and
you know you'll you'll you can go
research it or lab it up and find out
what the truth is
um
yeah really really good books and again
just to be clear on the exam a huge
chunk is still traditional routing and
switching like that's not going anywhere
software defined is getting bigger and
bigger and bigger but routing and
switching is still there in a major
major way so these books are pretty good
now I will say that the CCA routing
switching Volume 5 or version 5 volume
one and two I think they might be out of
print you can definitely still get them
they're still out there if used if
nothing else and then the e-books are
definitely still available
uh
uh Cisco SD Wan book this is actually
like the study guide for the
certification but it's also just sort of
a general book so it's interesting
because if you look at it it doesn't say
like official study guide because they
basically made one book it's the
official study guide and just the learn
how to use sd-wan book
um you know this is going to present
things in a easier to digest way but
software-defined stuff is changing all
the time so I do recommend reading this
but don't kid yourself you're also going
to have to read a lot of documentation
to make sure you're you're up to date
especially with the the version 1.1 of
the exam coming out where they're using
more up-to-date software it's a pretty
good book it's well well written decent
book not phenomenal but but pretty good
um not a whole lot to say about that the
on the exam the
sd-wan portion the software defined
portion it takes up a huge amount of
time I spent more time
is that true
I think it was about 50 50 of the time
that I spent doing like traditional
route switch and software defined
the actual tasks that you do like you do
so much more traditional compared to
software defined but the
software-defined task just takes so much
longer so uh that's that's a discussion
for another day but I I wouldn't be
surprised if Cisco has to change the
whole ccia method of testing because the
software-defined stuff is just so slow
that to get a a proper test they might
have to go back to two days like they
did you know back in the day
I don't know I don't know we'll see what
happens we'll see what happens but um
yeah so this is a decent book well worth
reading uh next is software defined
access
uh this book's okay it's honestly it's
not great the the problem with with the
problem with this book so okay so in the
software-defined wide area network even
though
most of what you do is gooey and on the
exam almost everything you do not almost
I think everything you do will be gooey
based
you can do a lot like policies and stuff
via the CLI like you can do a lot via
CLI in this book and the actual test by
the way the um the specialist test the
uh I forget what's called
um test you a lot on the
uh the CLI components of sd-wan
um
and so so there's a lot of of that
CLI in the book but when we come over to
software-defined access it's all GUI
and so what you're looking at is a book
full of
small screen captures of dense gooey
configuration Pages they're almost
unreadable so while there is information
to be gleaned in this book
it's I'm going to call it okay two stars
might be like one and a half Stars would
probably be better but I didn't have a
Graphic for that
um so you know it's it's okay
it's I don't know the documentation
might actually be better to read but you
know it's it is what it is
uh all IP multicast volume one look you
need you need multicast okay there's a
lot of multicast on the exam
um not so much in terms of configuration
but in the design section there was a
ton of questions about multicast
and you know who knows what that's going
to be in the next iteration there might
be more Hands-On multicast I don't know
but there was plenty of questions about
multicast
um I know that that when it comes to
network engineering the the majority of
Engineers have very little experience
with multicast I know that when we
started narbix class and he asked
everybody like what's your
what's your fear point you know what
what is it that you really or don't or
need feel like you you're really weak on
everybody with maybe one exception said
multicast like everybody was concerned
about multicast
so you're going to need to learn
multicast this book is
rough it's a rough read I don't even
think I made it halfway through I'm just
going to be straight with you narbick
had his own once once I finally got a
hold of narbick's multicast section of
his class not the class but of his lab
guide I gave up on this book his lab
guide was so much better it basically is
a book it's like a 300 page book just on
multicast it's it's crazy
um
pretty well written better than this
book so but if you don't have that
you're going to have to learn it
somewhere here is the book there's
volume one and volume two I actually
purchased both but you don't need volume
two volume one should cover most of what
you need I think
uh IPv6 photos this was a great book
look IPv6 is for a lot of guys really
scary it's big numbers it's doing
everything different it seems similar
enough but it's similar enough to ipv4
oftentimes just to mess you up
um because it's it is different so you
can make mistakes thinking that it's too
similar but this book was so well
written like really well written this is
another book that was almost enjoyable
to read like I actually looked forward
to sitting down and reading this book
tons of great information it really made
IPv6
understandable there have been some
changes with IPv6 over the years so I
think that the only thing of real note
was like the private addressing I think
this book
because the IPv6 has gone back and forth
about private addressing it was there
then they kind of got rid of it and then
they added it back in and so I forget I
think this book says there is no real
private address space but there kind of
is so it's whatever but that's the only
the only thing
um on the exam there wasn't too much
IPv6 but let's be honest it's only going
to get more and more IPv6 is coming I
can't believe it's still this far and to
be frank once you read this book you're
going to be an IPv6 fan you're going to
be like yeah why aren't we doing
IPv6 because it's not hard it's so
powerful it fixes so many problems I'm
sure it has its own problems but but
once you understand it it's great and
this book really helps you understand it
fantastic book this one is also out of
um so I think I bought a used copy
and it is digital it's available digital
it's available in the um
O'Reilly subscription library but great
book great great book and then
um so you're going to need some python
you don't need too much at least not in
the current version of the exam but you
do need to do no basic python
I like this book but you know I'm
there's probably almost certainly better
books out there this just happens to be
the one that I bought and I read
um
easy read in terms of programming the
one thing I like about this book
um in terms of programming books and
I've read tons of programming books over
the years
this one is is well written and it's
easy to it's easily approachable it's
it's very conversational in its Style
it's not too dry so it's a decent read
again there's almost certainly better
books out there there's so many of them
I don't know what's but this is a decent
one this one is also out of print so
obviously it's been replaced probably by
something better there's not a new
version of this that I found
but it's a good book uh you and for for
the current version of the exam which
again is being replaced very soon
um you you don't need very much python
so really like the first I don't
probably couple hundred pages of this
book is all you would need
alternatively you can take the python
institute's level one course that would
certainly be enough for um
for the ccie it's a great course it's
about takes about 40 hours tons of labs
good stuff highly highly recommended but
if you also want a a written reference
this is a decent book
uh okay and then
in terms of proper books the final one
we have is the CCI Enterprise
infrastructure Foundation I have a whole
video just about this book that I put
out like I don't know a year ago at this
point or no not quite that long maybe
nine months ago
um
prices are all all over the place I did
not pay anywhere near this but this is
what it seems to be going for now
um it's a fantastic book but what's
amazing is and I said this into my other
video about this book it's not the book
that it's amazed it's amazing when you
get the book you register this is why
you can't get it second hand because you
have to register the book and when you
register you get access to files from
The Cisco press
the Pearson website
and those files include a
2500 page lab guide
some of it you can't use some of it is
software defined and it is
not like you can't you couldn't do it in
your lab it's it's really weird I don't
know how why it was included in in the
book it's you basically need
oh excuse me you basically need uh
narbix racks to do it so it's weird I
don't know why it was included
but 2500 Pages a lab guide phenomenal
covers just about I'm going to do
another video comparing this book to
narbix course compared to the actual
exam and like do you really need the
course can you get away with the book so
I'm going to put out a video of that in
the next week or two
but that's really what you want you're
buying this book not for the book itself
you're buying the book for the lab guide
that is an extra after you register the
book the book itself whatever it's fine
but that's not what you want you want
the lab guide that comes with all the
Evangel topologies that you need to do
all of the labs so it's it is a complete
package it's phenomenal and even at 135
dollars it's a steal
uh so worth it if you're going to do
narbix course
if you're going to pay the full the four
thousand dollars remember you don't need
this book
this book is is literally a subset of
his course so he went through his course
and about half of what is in the lab
guide you get with his course is in this
book
but the question is is it is the other
half all that necessary I don't know
just yet but this book at in and of
itself phenomenal
and then the the final thing is um
validated Cisco validated designs and
documentation you're going to spend a
lot of time reading these just now
because I was trying to find something
there is a question on the exam
that I remembered the first time I took
it I came home and it took me a couple
hours this is and this is the problem
right like
they give you time so much time on the
design portion of the exam
that I think they want you to go look
through documentation that's great
but even with that it's not enough time
like so just now I I knew the right
answer and I know that I found it before
but I could not find it again and I
spent probably a half hour looking for
it so it's a specific question that was
on the exam that I eventually found the
answer to before taking it the second
time
and just now looking I I can't find it
so it I know it's out there because I
found it a couple weeks ago but uh it's
just that's one of those things it's
like that's why it's so frustrating
because I feel like you have to you have
to go take the exam you have to
um
make as many notes about the exam as you
can in your car after the exam come home
and then research you spend days and
weeks researching all this stuff the
couple hours they give you on the exam
to go to the documentation not enough
and the questions like the one question
that I'm thinking of right now obviously
I can't tell you what it was
but it is so specific and I just don't
think that most people are ever going to
like know that
it's just not really going to come up
it's one of those Cisco questions it's
like
in the moment it's it's a design
question so it's not like you know
you're going to be like oh the
Network's down I got to know this thing
I gotta figure it out real quick it's
something you're going to come across
potentially while you're doing a design
and it's related to only like the
smallest of something so
it's just not going to come up and the
fact that they're asking it on the CCI
it's just it's frustrating because it's
just like it's like an Fu question it's
like haha here's this bit of trivia do
you know it it's like yes I know it
because I went and spent hours trying to
find it buried in your documentation
anyway we're getting off track but I do
recommend reading the validated design
guides there's only maybe three or four
of them that you really need to read
They're each about 100 pages so it's
only like one additional book there's a
layer two stuff there's the
software defined software
software defined way and
software-defined access there's a couple
other ones I don't know there's not that
much reading but there you go okay so
that's that's all the the primary
reading that I did now I did tons of
other reading in documentation trying to
research things trying to solve problems
I was having the lab so I did tons of
other reading but that's for in terms of
like formal sit down and read this is
everything I did there'll be a list of
all the books uh and links to Amazon in
the description I don't necessarily
recommend you buy them from Amazon
oftentimes Cisco press has better deals
but just for simplicity's sake links are
to Amazon in the the doobly-doo all
right see you next time
