🌅 Reflecting on 7 Years of Business Success

The speaker introduces the video as a reflective conversation on their life after running a business, AlgoExpert, for seven years. Set in a scenic location in Punita, Mexico, they mention the stark contrast to their usual videos. AlgoExpert, a company that helps software engineers prepare for technical interviews, has grown significantly since its founding in 2017. The speaker discusses how the first years of business were intense, balancing a full-time job at Google and Facebook while working non-stop on AlgoExpert. However, as the business matured, life became less hectic, leading to greater time freedom.

05:00

⛓️ The Paradox of Freedom in Business

The speaker dives into the paradox of freedom when running a business. While initially, freedom from bosses was liberating, over time, they felt 'chained' to their own business, clients, and responsibilities. As AlgoExpert matured and became more self-operational, they regained this freedom, finding joy in having the ability to do whatever they wanted without guilt. However, they note that training oneself to not feel guilty when taking time off was a process, and balancing personal and business responsibilities was a key challenge.

10:01

📅 Discipline and the Burden of Unlimited Time

With time and freedom come new challenges. The speaker explains that the loss of imposed discipline—such as needing to wake up early for a job—creates a burden to self-regulate. Without external structures, it’s easy to fall into unhealthy patterns, such as staying up late or forgetting to maintain basic routines like eating properly. They emphasize the importance of self-discipline to prevent life from spiraling out of control when there are no immediate responsibilities.

15:02

😩 The Irony of Boredom Amid Unlimited Freedom

The speaker addresses the unexpected challenge of boredom that comes with unlimited time and freedom. Initially, having time off feels exciting, but over time, activities like watching movies or reading books can become unfulfilling. This leads to a sense of guilt, as they feel that they shouldn’t be bored with all the time and opportunities they have. The speaker reflects on how their previous work at AlgoExpert provided meaning and purpose, and now they are searching for new ways to find fulfillment beyond work.

💪 The Pursuit of Health and Self-Discipline

The speaker touches on the positive side of having more time, which is the ability to focus on health—both physical and mental. They admit that during the early years of AlgoExpert, they sacrificed sleep, diet, and exercise to build the business. Now, with more time, they are prioritizing their health, going to the gym, and eating well. They also mention the role their girlfriend plays in supporting their discipline. The speaker advises viewers to be careful about sacrificing health for success, as it’s harder to regain once lost.

🏋️‍♂️ Balancing Success and Health

In their closing thoughts, the speaker reflects on how health is often sacrificed for success and urges viewers to maintain a balance. They stress the importance of self-discipline when it comes to physical and mental health, sharing that they are now in the best shape of their life due to consistent efforts. They advise viewers not to trade too much of their health for business success, as it's a harder currency to regain. They conclude the video by showing the beautiful sunset in their location and inviting viewers to engage with the video.

Keywords

💡Time Freedom

Time freedom refers to having the ability to control how you spend your time without external constraints. In the video, the speaker discusses how, after seven years of running his business, he has gained almost unlimited time freedom because the business has reached a level of maturity and operates almost on autopilot. This freedom allows him to enjoy personal activities, but also comes with challenges like the need for self-discipline.

💡Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is the ability to control one's behavior and make oneself do things that are necessary or desirable, even when there is no external pressure. The speaker emphasizes that although he has time freedom, the lack of external responsibilities means he has to maintain his own structure. Without self-discipline, he risks falling into unproductive habits, such as staying up late or neglecting his health.

💡Autopilot

In the business context, 'autopilot' refers to a business operating smoothly with minimal active involvement from the founder. The speaker describes how his company, AlgoExpert, has reached a stage where operations are easier to manage, products are simpler to add, and customer acquisition is more seamless, allowing him to step back from the day-to-day grind.

💡AlgoExpert

AlgoExpert is the company that the speaker founded, which helps software engineers prepare for technical interviews. It represents his entrepreneurial journey over the past seven years and serves as the foundation of his life experiences in the video. The success of AlgoExpert has provided him with financial and time freedom, but it has also come with sacrifices like long hours and personal health impacts.

💡Maturity

Maturity in this context refers to the stage in a business's lifecycle where operations stabilize and the company functions efficiently. The speaker explains that after several years of intense growth and hard work, AlgoExpert has matured to a point where it operates smoothly, allowing him more personal freedom. This shift marks a transition from constant hustle to a more relaxed phase of managing the business.

💡Burnout

Burnout refers to physical, emotional, or mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress or overwork. The speaker alludes to experiencing a near-burnout state during the early years of his business when he was working '24/7,' juggling his full-time job and the demands of running AlgoExpert. This relentless pace took a toll on his health and well-being, leading him to reflect on the need for balance.

💡Health Sacrifice

Health sacrifice refers to compromising one's physical, mental, or emotional health in the pursuit of success. The speaker shares how he sacrificed sleep, diet, and exercise in the early stages of building AlgoExpert, prioritizing the business above everything else. He now recognizes the importance of health and warns others to be cautious about trading too much of their well-being for business success.

💡Purpose

Purpose in this context refers to the sense of meaning or direction in life, often derived from work or personal fulfillment. The speaker reflects on how AlgoExpert gave him a strong sense of purpose during its growth phase. However, as the business has stabilized, he finds himself searching for new sources of purpose and meaning, as the challenges that once occupied his time have lessened.

💡Guilt

Guilt is the feeling of remorse or responsibility, often for not fulfilling a perceived obligation. The speaker describes how, after gaining time freedom, he initially felt guilty for taking vacations or stepping back from constant work. This guilt stemmed from the mindset that he needed to be constantly working to ensure the success of AlgoExpert, even when the business no longer required his full attention.

💡Boredom

Boredom is a state of feeling disinterested and unengaged with one's activities. The speaker discusses how, despite having the freedom to do whatever he wants, he sometimes feels bored due to the lack of external challenges or responsibilities. This boredom, ironically, comes from having too much time and not enough pressing tasks, highlighting the paradox of craving freedom but also needing structure.

play00:00

what's up everybody how's it going in

play00:02

this video I'm going to tell you what my

play00:04

life is like after running my business

play00:06

for seven years now quick disclaimer

play00:10

this video is going to be very different

play00:11

from my typical videos because I am in a

play00:14

completely different location as you

play00:15

might see from this jungle and from the

play00:18

ocean behind me and this gorgeous sunset

play00:21

right here I am in beautiful punita

play00:25

Mexico and I figured that I would just

play00:28

grab my cell phone and have a sort of

play00:30

stream of Consciousness conversation

play00:32

with you guys to share some of these

play00:34

thoughts that I've been having so if

play00:37

you're new here I've been running my own

play00:40

business called algo expert for uh over

play00:43

seven years now since February 2017 algo

play00:47

expert is a company that helps software

play00:48

Engineers prepare for technical

play00:50

interviews we've done very well for

play00:52

ourselves we've grown tremendously since

play00:56

I uh created the business back in

play00:58

2017 and over the course of these seven

play01:01

years my life has changed dramatically

play01:06

uh you know during the first few years

play01:07

of running the business as a lot of my

play01:10

uh old viewers know I was working like

play01:14

247 you know I was it was constantly

play01:17

working non-stop and when I started the

play01:20

business I was uh also having a

play01:23

full-time job as a software engineer at

play01:25

Google then at Facebook for like over

play01:27

two years and so I was juggling that and

play01:29

running algo expert so is really

play01:31

non-stop like very little sleep

play01:34

sacrificing a lot and then when uh we

play01:37

quit our full-time jobs and went

play01:39

full-time on algo expert for the

play01:42

following let's say three years so you

play01:44

know about five years of the business it

play01:47

was still like work work work non-stop

play01:51

you know grow at all costs really try to

play01:54

like make it so to speak and uh make it

play01:58

we did kind of and so now over the these

play02:02

last 2 years look at this beautiful

play02:04

sunset you see it let me try to focus on

play02:06

it it is absolutely gorgeous and I'm

play02:10

I've been doing a a time lapse here uh

play02:13

I'll probably show the time lapse in the

play02:15

video on my other phone it's absolutely

play02:19

gorgeous and in the video it doesn't

play02:21

quite

play02:22

capture how orange and like bright this

play02:26

sun is anyway I divate so um over the

play02:30

last couple years my life has really

play02:34

changed and I'm talking about because of

play02:37

the business and the the the stage that

play02:40

the business has uh reached so you know

play02:43

like I said during these first five

play02:45

years it was like go go go all the time

play02:47

and then we kind of reached maturity the

play02:49

business became much more um like self

play02:54

operational uh kind of almost like an

play02:56

autopilot things became way easier

play02:59

easier to do to scale it was easier to

play03:03

add products on the platform to acquire

play03:06

customers and so on and so forth to the

play03:08

point that I would say over the last 12

play03:11

months now but really 24 months but kind

play03:14

of like progressively

play03:17

faster I have had more and more and more

play03:21

and more time freedom and and less of a

play03:26

requirement to work constantly

play03:30

and uh in this video that's what I want

play03:33

to talk about like the kind of pros and

play03:35

cons the pros might seem obvious of that

play03:37

the cons not so much the pros and cons

play03:40

of you know having run a successful

play03:43

business for seven years and reaching

play03:46

this stage so what are the pros well the

play03:50

two most obvious Pros are time and

play03:55

freedom I am at a point now in the

play03:58

business's life where I have a lot of

play04:02

time dare I say like almost unlimited

play04:06

time why because like I implied a few

play04:09

seconds ago a few minutes ago I have

play04:11

like very little work to do these days

play04:13

compared to before and uh on top of this

play04:18

time I have complete and utter Freedom

play04:23

now to be clear I've always had freedom

play04:26

ever since I quit my full-time jobs at

play04:28

Google and Facebook like as soon as I

play04:30

was on my own uh only working on algo

play04:33

expert I wasn't reporting to anybody so

play04:36

you know I had the freedom to do

play04:38

whatever I wanted when I wanted I could

play04:40

go to lunch when I wanted I could go to

play04:42

bed when I wanted but there was still a

play04:45

sort of

play04:46

obligation both to myself and to the

play04:50

business or the business the business's

play04:52

other team members to like you know be

play04:58

there you know I had to be there

play05:00

I had responsibilities towards them and

play05:02

towards myself and so with that came a

play05:06

sort of lack of Freedom that's the weird

play05:08

like uh kind of paradox when you run

play05:11

your own business is that on the one

play05:13

hand you have complete freedom from

play05:15

other people like you don't have a boss

play05:17

anymore but suddenly you realize oh wait

play05:20

I'm actually like chained to my own

play05:22

business I'm chained to my own self I'm

play05:25

chained to my customers Etc okay however

play05:29

what I'm saying now is that over the

play05:31

last few

play05:32

years that freedom like I have regained

play05:35

that freedom purely by way of the

play05:38

business reaching uh a certain level of

play05:42

maturity and uh being on autopilot and

play05:46

that is truly amazing like as I'm sure

play05:49

many of you can imagine it's awesome to

play05:54

to be able to do whatever you want

play05:57

whenever you want without needing to ask

play05:59

for permission and without needing to

play06:02

feel guilty or anything like that now by

play06:05

the way quick quick side note you have

play06:07

to train yourself to not feel guilty I

play06:10

remember about 2 three years ago when

play06:13

things started to calm down at algo

play06:16

expert and I started to realize like huh

play06:20

like maybe I can go on a vacation now

play06:24

maybe I can you know travel a little bit

play06:26

maybe I can do XYZ I was feeling guilty

play06:29

at first I was like but wait a second I

play06:30

need to be constantly working like if I

play06:33

if I go on vacation and I'm not working

play06:35

you know am I going to let myself down

play06:37

am I going to let the business down and

play06:39

so that was kind of a learning curve in

play06:41

and of itself but um the point of the

play06:45

matter is like yes once you allow

play06:48

yourself to to to take advantage of this

play06:51

complete Freedom it's

play06:53

awesome but this is where some of the

play06:57

cons of you know having this life of

play07:00

being your own boss and and having you

play07:02

know unlimited time and freedom this is

play07:04

when the cons start to to kind of enter

play07:07

into your life and so let me try to to

play07:09

to explain these conss for some of you

play07:11

who who might be you know confused of

play07:13

them so the first con that comes with

play07:18

this life is the con of you you feel

play07:23

like you you no longer have discipline

play07:28

or rather you you have have a much

play07:30

greater burden to be disciplined like

play07:35

when you have responsibilities when you

play07:37

don't have unlimited Freedom when you

play07:39

don't have unlimited time you naturally

play07:44

have discipline that is kind of thrown

play07:48

onto

play07:50

you and and that can actually be really

play07:52

helpful it's like this invisible this

play07:55

this burden that is actually an

play07:57

invisible blessing a blessing in this

play07:59

like oh you have to wake up every day to

play08:01

go to work and you have to wake up every

play08:03

day at 7:00 a.m. you know well there's

play08:06

actually kind of a a niceness to that

play08:10

there's something good about that

play08:12

whereas whoops sorry whereas um you know

play08:16

when you're when you're when you have

play08:17

unlimited freedom to do whatever you

play08:19

want and all that you have no

play08:21

responsibilities you have no one to to

play08:24

to cater to things can kind of spiral

play08:27

out of control quickly like one day you

play08:30

go to bed super late next day you wake

play08:32

up super late next day you you do the

play08:35

same thing next day you do the same

play08:37

thing then you forget to eat but doesn't

play08:40

really matter cuz you know you can catch

play08:42

up on your health the next day because

play08:43

you have nowhere to go and you you start

play08:47

to spiral out of control really quickly

play08:51

and that can be really bad and so all

play08:54

that to say you need to really remind

play08:56

yourself to be self-disciplined the

play08:58

second thing um that comes with uh you

play09:03

know unlimited time and unlimited uh

play09:05

freedom is and unironically boredom and

play09:09

I know this one is going to be one that

play09:10

people like roll their eyes at like what

play09:12

are you talking about how can you be

play09:14

bored when you've got like you can do

play09:16

whatever you want all day long and all

play09:17

that but you know just as with

play09:20

everything in life it's like

play09:23

you you you kind of like crave what you

play09:26

don't have so when you are uh um you

play09:30

know working non-stop 24/7 never taking

play09:32

vacations and all that you crave to have

play09:36

seven days of vacation or seven months

play09:38

of vacation or seven years of vacation

play09:40

where you can do you know whatever you

play09:42

want you can focus on your hobbies catch

play09:44

up on shows uh read books catch up on

play09:47

movies travel so on and so forth but

play09:50

when you start to have that you know for

play09:52

the first seven days amazing for seven

play09:54

months probably still amazing but then

play09:57

you know there's only so many movies you

play09:59

can watch so there's only so much

play10:01

YouTube you can consume there's only so

play10:03

many books you can read before you start

play10:05

to kind of like you know crave a bit of

play10:07

a change or crave something different

play10:10

and so this is something that you know

play10:12

I've been really conflicted with uh over

play10:14

the last let's say 6 months or so

play10:16

because like yeah you you just

play10:18

inevitably start to be flat out bored

play10:22

you're flat out bored and you start to

play10:26

once again have a feeling of guilt kind

play10:28

of like the feeling of guilt I was

play10:29

saying earlier of like when you're

play10:31

trying to to allow yourself to go on

play10:34

vacation you know after working non-stop

play10:36

for so many years here it's like you you

play10:40

have to you feel really guilty cuz

play10:42

you're like how am I bored like I'm not

play10:44

allowed to be bored when I have this

play10:47

amazing perk of complete and utter

play10:50

Freedom you know and yet you are bored

play10:53

over the last few months I've been

play10:55

really thinking okay well how can I not

play10:57

be bored maybe I need to like expand my

play10:59

hobbies a little bit or explore new

play11:02

hobbies maybe I need to um you know

play11:06

really think about finding some sort of

play11:08

purpose like you know after work and I

play11:10

think you know there's been this

play11:11

realization of I used to find so much

play11:15

purpose and meaning in my work an algo

play11:18

expert

play11:20

and now that is no longer like the thing

play11:24

taking up all my time and attention and

play11:27

so I feel like I've lost a little bit of

play11:29

that purpose of that meaning and I need

play11:31

to refind it and I can't say that I've

play11:33

necessarily that I necessarily have

play11:35

found it but I'm looking for it I'm

play11:37

thinking about it more

play11:39

actively and um yeah you know it's it's

play11:42

not easy is it a great problem to have

play11:44

yes I'm not complaining but it's not

play11:47

easy you know and it's just something to

play11:49

think about like if you know I guess

play11:51

like one of the overarching messages

play11:53

that I have with this video with this

play11:55

like rant this 12 minute rant if you've

play11:57

made it this far uh um I'm I'm happy

play12:01

that you're listening to my rant feel

play12:03

free to leave like a let's see what

play12:05

emoji could you leave leave a hamburger

play12:07

Emoji in the comments below to let me

play12:09

know that you've made it to to this

play12:11

point in the video and I will I will try

play12:13

to hard it but um yeah the the main

play12:16

message I I want to send here is that

play12:19

like if you're someone who who maybe is

play12:21

not running your own business yet uh but

play12:24

who who feels like you know you you want

play12:27

to because you crave that unlimited time

play12:29

and freedom I'm not here to discourage

play12:32

you or to tell you like oh no it's not

play12:33

it's not good it's not what it's got out

play12:35

to be no it's fantastic but it does come

play12:37

with some you know negatives uh some

play12:39

negatives that uh you have to work uh

play12:42

through and that you can honestly kind

play12:44

of work through already which is by way

play12:46

of like doing some internal reflection

play12:48

about you know what are you looking for

play12:50

in life what kind of purpose like what

play12:53

brings you purpose is it work is it

play12:55

something else um and so on and so forth

play12:58

but

play12:59

uh as a final sort of closing thought

play13:02

one thing that is also amazing about

play13:05

having like so much time and freedom but

play13:07

that you know it goes back to the

play13:08

self-discipline of like you have to

play13:10

actually make use of it is you can

play13:14

really focus on your health um and here

play13:18

you know I'm talking mental health

play13:19

physical health emotional health

play13:21

spiritual health whatever um but for me

play13:24

specifically I would say like physical

play13:26

health during the the first few years of

play13:29

algo expert um it was so easy to

play13:33

sacrifice kind of everything above like

play13:37

algo expert came first above everything

play13:39

else and so I sacrificed sleep sleep was

play13:42

the worst I sacrificed you know my diet

play13:44

like I was eating like garbage all the

play13:46

time um I was skipping the gym a lot

play13:50

even though like I love the gym and I

play13:52

used to never skip the gym and so now

play13:56

over the last year or so I've really

play13:59

really really really been trying to stay

play14:02

self-disciplined um and focus on these

play14:05

things like focus on my health you know

play14:07

focus on my sleep like I have zero

play14:09

excuse to not sleep well when when I

play14:13

have so much time and so much freedom I

play14:15

have zero excuse to skip the gym and so

play14:18

now these days I'm super happy I've been

play14:20

back at the gym like super consistently

play14:22

I'm the strongest I've been like ever um

play14:26

I've been bulking a lot which is what

play14:27

I've been wanting to do um I've been

play14:29

eating super well and of course it helps

play14:31

to have like a support system I've got

play14:33

an amazing girlfriend who's uh you know

play14:35

super helpful like to keep me

play14:37

disciplined and keep me motivated and

play14:39

keep me you know we go to the gym

play14:41

together we um you know she like wakes

play14:44

me up on time keeps me on a good

play14:47

schedule um Cooks great food and all

play14:50

that but uh yeah Health super important

play14:54

and uh something that like I truly have

play14:58

no excuse use to to skip out on and

play15:02

honestly it's like it's probably the the

play15:03

biggest piece of advice that I would

play15:04

give for anybody who's not quite at this

play15:06

sort of unlimited time unlimited Freedom

play15:09

point but who's like working towards

play15:11

there is be careful how much of your

play15:14

health you sacrifice to get here because

play15:18

um like I've always said this before

play15:20

health is a currency you can trade it

play15:22

right like I traded some of my health

play15:25

for uh some of algo experts success and

play15:27

some of my you know current success to

play15:29

get to where I'm at in life but at what

play15:31

cost you know uh health is kind of the

play15:34

you know it's more the unidirectional

play15:37

thing than a bidirectional thing it's

play15:39

harder to gain back Health that you've

play15:41

spent and so um yeah just be wary of

play15:44

that and uh if you do get to a point

play15:47

where you have lots of time lots of

play15:48

Freedom focusing on your health and

play15:50

trying to be really self-disciplined to

play15:52

focus on your health is going to be

play15:53

super

play15:54

important anyway listen this is uh my

play15:58

rant this is my stream of Consciousness

play15:59

rant um hopefully if you've made it this

play16:02

far you found some value out of it and

play16:05

uh let me know if you did let me know

play16:08

what your thoughts are and I will see

play16:10

you in the next video look at this
