Today we're back in Turkey to ride their new homegrown semi-highspeed
electric train... The future goal is to export this to railways worldwide,
so let's go and find out if it cuts the mustard with their European and Asian competition...
Hello & welcome to Istanbul. This vast trans-continental city is Turkey's largest,
and has always been on of my favourites to visit.
There's amazing history to see all around you, along with a plethora of souks,
markets and bazaars to satisfy even the most hardcore shopaholic.
And then there's also many activities to keep you busy, both on and off land.
However, we're off to ride a recently introduced,
homegrown Turkish train, which is their first foray in to the area.
Our journey starts at Sirkeci Station, in central Istanbul where we must take the
Marmaray commuter train from the European side of the city to the Asian, or Anatolian side.
The train we're off to ride train is currently only serving limited routes, so we will have
to travel to Gebze, an Istanbul suburb at the Eastern end of line to catch this service today.
You will need an 'Istanbulkart' travel card to use the Marmaray, and the total price of
the trip is 30.3 Turkish Lira (£0.73, €0.86, $0.92) for the one hour journey.
These 12-car EMUs run approximately every 10 minutes, in each direction, throughout the day.
On arrival at Gebze, you must exit the main part of the station and turn right,
following signs to the 'Adapazari Ekspres', which has its own separate entrance.
Step-free access is provided from street to platform level by way of this ramp.
We also catch the first glimpse of the train we'll be riding today.
On the way in, is a dedicated, staffed ticket office, but as I bought mine online,
I can just head straight to the platform.
Toilets and a waiting room are located down the far end.
Once you're ready, just get your ticket scanned by the staff member and you can access the train.
Our ride today is this Turkish designed and built TCDD 5-car E44000 series Electric Multiple Unit.
These have a design speed of 176km/h (110mph), and an in-service speed of 160km/h (100mph).
A Big Thanks to Omio for sponsoring this video.
Omio is a travel comparison and booking website that let's you see
all the best deals from multiple modes and operators all at once.
Let's take Madrid to Barcelona as an example.
You can select your date, and browse all available trains, buses and planes with prices.
Select your preferred option, make the payment and the tickets are emailed straight to you.

OK, let's board!
Step-free access is not available, however a wheelchair lift is integrated in to coach 2, where
you'll find the accessible toilets and wheelchair spaces. We'll look at these once we get going.
Coach 1 is where you'll find the 'First Class' seating however, at the time of filming, the whole
train was being sold in single class of travel. Luggage can be stored in the large stacks in
the vestibules, and also in the overhead racks above all seats.
Second Class is in a 2+2 layout,
with my place today being a forward facing airline style window seat.
Here's a look at today's route from Gebze to Adapazari,
which runs mostly along the Sea of Marmara coast.
We depart 2 minutes late, at 1.26pm. The route is 95km (59mi) in distance
and is scheduled to take 1 hours and 23 minutes of travel time this afternoon.
The price of an adult ticket is 120 Turkish Lira (£2.89, €3.24, $3.65).
Under 12s and over 65s are half price.
Seat selection, from a seating plan is free,
but you can only pick a seat next to someone from your booking, or the same gender as you.
There are currently 5 return services per day on this route.
Hopefully, once the track works are completed along this section,
more regional services will be able to run,
along with the speeding up of the long distance and high-speed services to Ankara and beyond.
OK, let's check out the seating area.
Legroom is reasonable, and there's an adjustable footrest, storage net,
medium sized tray table and a coat hook available.
The seat is pretty well padded and has a padded,
winged headrest with a reading light just to the side of it.
It can also be reclined, and has adjustable armrests and
two power sockets can be found under each seat.
There are also handy displays throughout the trains showing
route information, time, temperature and speed.
And also some great coastal #TrainWindowViews
to enjoy along this stretch running alongside the Sea of Marmara coast.
We make quite a few stops en-route, such as here at Hereke. Lots of station
upgrade work is also ongoing, with just one temporary platform currently in use here.
Then, we run alongside the Akçaray Tramway on the approach to Izmit,
the most major of our intermediate stops.
This 2 line light rail system serves this city of 370,000 people,
which is capital of the Kocaeli Province.
Back on the move and the onboard service begins.
I bought a box of Pismaniye, mainly because I liked the name.
It was actually quite nice. The best way I can describe it is a mix between the
taste of woody candy floss and the texture of loft insulation.
Most of the trip we are cruising at or close to today's top speed of 120km/h (75mph).

A trolley service is also provided selling hot & cold drinks and small snacks.
I got a giant pretzel, a tea and a coke zero. The total price was just 41 Turkish
Lira (£0.99, €1.17, $1.25). This is quite insane when you think about it.
Here is the actual dining car, which wasn't open on this trip. I guess
this will be used when the train starts running longer journeys.
There is good accessible facilities on this train, with two wheelchair spaces,
integrated wheelchair lifts on both sides of the train,
and a large accessible toilet which are all located in coach 2.
Regular toilets can be found in the other coaches of the train.
The water worked, the soap was stocked up and hand towels were present.
The hand dryer was probably the most powerful I've ever encountered. It actually shocked me!
There was toilet paper and baby changing facilities,
and on the whole, everything was pretty clean.
As we approach Adapazari, on the left hand side is the freshwater Lake Sapanca,
which was formed above a tectonic hole on the North Anatolian fault.
Today's journey is now coming to an end,
so let me summarise my trip on the new TCDD E44000 series EMU, from Gebze to Adapazari.
Overall, it was very good, comfortable, clean and well designed new train.
They should be very proud of the first attempt at building their own EMU!
Great value and onboard service made it an even better proposition than taking
the bus. Hopefully these units will be rolled out on many more routes in the years to come.
We arrive at Adapazari Gari at 3pm, around 18 minutes late.
There are a few interesting things to see in the city, which makes it a fun
day trip from Istanbul. I'll show you these shortly, so keep watching until the end.
Adapazari is home to 280,000 people, and is capital of the Sakarya province.
