Highlights
The video is part of a series on the genealogy of Jose Rizal, focusing on his maternal side.
The history of Teodora Alonso's family is not as easily traced as that of her husband's, according to Austin Craig.
Teodora Alonso's family branches were wealthier and more influential than those of her husband, with many lawyers and priests.
Captain Gregorio Alonso, Teodora's ancestor, was a mestizo Chinese and municipal captain of Binan in 1797.
Gregorio Alonso’s son, Cipriano Alonso, also served as municipal captain of Binan in 1797 and married Maria Florentina, of the famous Florentina family of Chinese mestizos.
Lorenzo Alberto Alonso, born in 1790, was highly educated as a surveyor and became wealthy through investments in American shipping firms.
Lorenzo Alberto Alonso married Brijida de Quintos, and they had five children, including Teodora Alonso, who married Francisco Rizal Mercado.
Teodora Alonso's children used the name 'Alonso' until the name-change edict of 1849-1850 when they adopted the name 'Realonda.'
There is a claim that the surname 'Realonda' alludes to royal blood in the family, although this is likely a mistake in recordkeeping.
Jose Alberto, Teodora's brother, was educated in British India and played a significant role in Rizal's political education.
Jose Alberto had significant influence with the Spanish Regency and was a personal friend of General Prim, a prominent Spanish leader.
Jose Alberto was awarded a knight of the Order of Carlos III and later promoted to knight commander of the Order of Isabella the Catholic.
Teodora Alonso married Francisco Mercado, and they had 11 children, including Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines.
The video concludes the discussion of the maternal side of Jose Rizal’s family, promising to cover the popular descendants of the Rizal family in the next episode.
The next episode is scheduled to be released at 8 a.m. Philippine Standard Time, and viewers are encouraged to stay tuned for more.

austin craig wrote in his seminal
biography of resale that the history of
the family of teodora alonso is
unfortunately
not so easily traced as is that of her
husband and what is known as of less
simplicity
and perhaps of more interest since the
mother's influence is greater than the
father's
and she was the mother of jose risol
nevertheless
all the branches of teodoro alonso's
family were much richer than the
relatives of her husband
there were numerous lawyers and priests
among them the old-time proof of social
standing
and they were influential in the country
on the alonso side we start with don
gregorio alonso
captain gregorio alonso who died in 1794
in santa cruz
district of manila was governed at her
silo twice of the gremio domesticos
in 1763 and again in 1768.
his death record described him as
mestizo chinese
unfortunately we do not know his wife's
name as it is not mentioned in his death
record
his son don cipriano alonso was also
municipal captain of binyan
in 1797. he was married to maria
florentina
born 1771 and died in 1817.
she belonged to the famous florentina
family of chinese mestizos
originating in boliwag bulacan and her
father was also a municipal captain
don mariano alejandro binyan they had
three children
lorenzo alberto alonso isabelle and a
brother who became a priest but whose
name eludes us today lorenzo alberto
alonso
born 1790 died 1854 is said to have been
very chinese in appearance
he was a municipal captain of binyan in
1824.
lorenzo alberto was educated as a
surveyor and his engineering books
some in english and others in french
were preserved in being until
upon the death of his son the family
belongings were scattered
he was wealthy and had invested a
considerable sum of money with the
american manila shipping
firm's appeal hubble and co and russell
sturgison company
he married brigitte de quintos who he
met while he was a student in manila
apparently both were connected with the
reyes family in some way
they had five children narcissa who
married santiago mugger
teodora who married francisco risol
mercado
gregorio manuel and jose
all were born in manila but lived in
columba and they used the name alonso
until the general change of names in
1849
1850 when with their mother they adopted
the name riolonda
[Music]
[Music]
some claim according to resaw biographer
austin craig
that the adoption of the surname
raelonda is an allusion to royal blood
in the family
however it is highly probably that as
was a careless mistake made in writing
as evidenced by records that show rosa
rayalonda
whose name sometimes appears written as
redonda there really does not appear any
proof that reyelonda was being adopted
as a surname
in the philippines today there are just
seven rilandas one in bulacan
and six in kamarina sur and redonda
is most certainly effeminate of redondo
which disappear in the kanalogo and
which is carried by 860 people in the
province of laguna
in binyan alone 21 of the redondos live
a special mention needs to be made about
the maternal uncle of jose risol
this uncle jose alberto was educated in
british india
spending 11 years in a calcutta
missionary school
he played a considerable part in resales
political education
he was influential with the regency in
spain which succeeded queen isabel when
that sovereign became tumultuous to be
longer tolerated
and he was the personal friend of the
region general prim
jose alberto was made by a knight of the
order of carlos iii
and after prim's death was created by
king amadeo
a night commander a step higher in the
order of isabella the catholic
and of course teodora alonso married
francisco mercado and they had 11
children
and one of these was jose resol the
philippine national hero
this ends our discussion on the maternal
side of jose resol's family tree
in our next episode we will trace the
more popular descendants of the resall
