The Internet vs. The Web
Summary
TLDRThis video from the Web Dev Cave explores the origins and workings of the internet and the web. It delves into the 1960s when ARPA funded research for computer interconnectivity, leading to the creation of the first network. The script explains how the internet evolved from a research network to a global system of interconnected networks using TCP/IP protocols. It distinguishes the internet as a platform for various services, including the web, which is a system for accessing interconnected resources through web pages and browsers. The tutorial aims to clarify the difference between the internet and the web, setting the stage for further in-depth discussions.

Q & A
What was the primary purpose of the ARPA-funded research in the 1960s?
-The primary purpose was to develop protocols that would allow computers to interconnect with each other using digital communication, regardless of geographical location.
What is the significance of the TCP/IP protocol suite in the development of the internet?
-TCP/IP is a global, unique set of protocols that enabled the interconnection of different networks, which was essential for the creation and growth of the internet.
What is a network in the context of the script?
-A network is a group of two or more computer systems interconnected for the purpose of communication and data exchange.
How does the script define the internet?
-The internet is defined as a global inter-network, consisting of millions of interconnected networks from various sectors such as private, public, academic, and government.
What are some of the services built on top of the internet mentioned in the script?
-Some services built on top of the internet include mobile apps, electronic mail, file sharing, the worldwide web, online games, and internet telephony.
What is the worldwide web, as described in the script?
-The worldwide web is a system that interconnects resources on the internet, such as documents, images, videos, and more, via hyperlinks and is accessed through web browsers.
What are the three main technologies used to create web pages according to the script?
-The three main technologies used to create web pages are HTML for structuring, CSS for styling, and scripting languages to add interactivity.
How are web pages and websites differentiated in the script?
-Web pages are individual pages accessed through the web, while websites are structured, interrelated groups of web pages.
What role do web browsers play in accessing web resources?
-Web browsers are programs like Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari that allow users to access and view web resources, typically presented in the form of web pages or websites.
Why was the distinction between the internet and the web important to clarify in the script?
-Clarifying the distinction between the internet and the web is important to understand that the internet is a global network of networks that supports various services, including the worldwide web, which is a system for accessing interconnected resources.
Outlines
🌐 Introduction to the Internet and the Web
This paragraph introduces the topic of the video, which is an exploration of the internet and the web, their functions, and how they differ from each other. It begins with a historical overview, mentioning the 1960s and the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), which funded research to develop protocols for computers to interconnect using digital communication. This led to the creation of the first network, ARPANET, initially for academic and scientific use. The paragraph discusses the growth of this network and the emergence of others, highlighting the challenge of interconnecting different networks using various protocols. The invention of TCP/IP protocols is mentioned as a solution to this problem, marking the beginning of the internet. The paragraph concludes by defining a network as a group of interconnected computer systems and the internet as a global network of networks, emphasizing the role of TCP/IP in enabling communication across this vast system.

Transcripts
hey what's up guys I'm a and welcome to
this first video from the web dev cave
in this tutorial we'll talk about the
internet and the web what are they how
they work and how they are distinct from
each other but first let's go back to
the old days now this is not history
class don't be afraid but a little bit
of background will help us to understand
the evolution process down the road and
to better get the concepts in the 1960s
Advanced research projects agency also
known as arpa of the US Department of
Defense funded a research to develop
protocols to allow their computers to
interconnect with each other using
digital communication regardless the
geographical area therefore the first
Network a research network was created
the network was used for academic and
scientific purposes it started small
connecting a bunch of collected
University campuses research
institutions and companies the network
grew to a few hundred by the early 80s
at the same time other networks were
being created using other protocols
we'll cover networking and protocols in
much more details in other videos but
for now let's talk just about networks
and the internet as I said other
networks were being created using other
protocols networks such as x25 uset and
others but down the road a problem
raised people who were using these
networks wanted to interconnect with
each other by connecting the networks
together and in order to successfully
interconnect networks must use the exact
same protocols this problem led to the
invention of a global unique suit of
protocols called tcpip thus the Advent
of the internet let's talk about the
internet the internet is a sort of a
nickname of a global inter Network now
let's stop here and see what is a
network a network is a group of computer
systems two or more interconnected
together for the sake of communicating
and exchange Chang in data using links
these computer systems whether they are
laptops desktops smartphones TVs cars
Etc are called in terms of the network
nodes these nodes establish connections
between them using either cable Media or
wireless media so this is what we mean
by a network now the internet simply as
we said is a Global Network of networks
networks that are either private public
academic of business or government
actually there are millions of
interconnected networks out there and
that what makes the internet a Global
Network all what we have here is a
Global Network namely just
interconnected computers via cables or
wireless media using the global TCP IP s
of protocols to take advantage of this
huge Network and make use of it many
internet services has been created and
engineered such as mobile apps
electronic mail file sharing the
worldwide web online games internet
telephony Etc so all these services are
built on top of the internet thus they
are a part of it for now this is all
what you have to know about the internet
unless you want to dig into the
networking world and of course I'll
cover more things in the next videos
let's see then what is the worldwide web
or simply the web the worldwide web is
probably the most commonly used service
on the internet allowing people to
search get and share the data therefore
it's the most influential application in
this world to be more specific the web
is a sort of virtual system that
interconnect resources on the internet
such as documents images videos and many
other resources via hyperlinks and
referen it with Uris uniform resource
identifiers we use web browsers such as
Chrome Internet Explorer Firefox Safari
and other similar programs to have
access to web resources usually those
resources are presented in web pages
sometimes in structured interrelated
group of web pages called websites web
pages are created using HTML for
structuring the page CSS to sell it
usually to give it a nice look and we
use script and languages to add
interactivity to the web page and make
it more user friendly we still have a
lot to cover but in this video we just
try to differentiate the internet from
the web so to sum up we've seen that the
internet is a Global Network ofet
networks and that the network is a group
of interconnected computer systems we
have also seen that we make use of the
Internet by building on top of its
services such as the worldwide web file
sharing emailing Etc also the web is a
system of interconnected resources
resources that are presented in the web
using web pages or websites to access
these web pages or websites we use web
browsers I hope you found this video
useful and that you've learned something
from it and yeah don't forget to
subscribe tell the next video stay tuned
