being perfect is very exhausting
it's a never ending race.
How I build a great data visualization.
Then presenting it to my manager's manager.
Hey~
draw things out and brainstorm
how our markets have been performing
I'm gonna be in Taiwan for a whole month.
Lillian, how do you improve yourself?
Hello!
Good morning!
Good morning!
Good morning everyone.
It is currently...
8 am.
And this is like my sacred morning time.
I'm making my favorite avocado toast today
It's perfectly riped.
From 8 to 9 am, I get to do my own thing,
like, nothing about work and nothing about YouTube,
just doing the stuff that I genuinely want to do.
(recent favorite - chicken sausage)
(Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day)
(if you haven't already..)
(put this Trader Joe's seasoning in your avocado)
(the best avocado seasoning ever)
No you can't have any!
Perfect combination.
So I'm a type A perfectionist,
but as I turned 27 four months ago,
that's when I started to realize
being perfect is very exhausting
it's a never ending race.
I always feel like I can do better,
I should do more.
So recently,
I've been rethinking about the concept of perfection,
in which
what if...
(the moment that you're yourself, you're doing YOU,)
you're simply perfect.
Yeah.
(self-worth isn't earned through hard work)
(you're born worthy)
(we all are 🧡)
(let's get today started ☀️)
(^Bella thinks she's also working)
Looking at my calendar today,
there are three buckets of things I'm doing.
It's a mix of leadership, analysis, and...
stepping out of my comfort zone.
The first one is, I'm meeting with a product manager
Honestly, I barely know anything about product...
After lunch, I need to work on the monthly business performance report.(<analysis)
And then in the afternoon,
I've been leading our quarterly business report (<leadership)
And I'm presenting it to my manager's manager
on the whole deck.
(Google Meet has animated background now?!)
(decided to keep it realistic xD)
Good. How are you? (10:00AM meeting with PM)
So many people saw the video! (had an in-depth talk with the PM on my last video)
Do you feel famous now?
I saw your comments on the deck I built yesterday.
Thank you for the feedback.
A lot of you often ask me,
Lillian, how do you improve yourself?
Any tools, books, or podcasts?
My answer to that is,
my coworkers!
Sometimes, the best place to learn from
is the people around you.
Your co-workers are probably good at something,
that's why they're working here as well.
So learn from them by asking strategic questions, like this one:
What's the ideal outcome for you?
Like what is your goal from this insight synthesis?
Because then from there on,
I can think about what type of questions to ask our stakeholders.
By asking them, what is your goal for this project?
It helps me know how I can do my job better
and it also allows me to see how they think,
which then I can learn from.
(always taking notes!)
(and confirm with them) (it's a practice for me to think like them!)
(NewJeans = working hype songs 🐰)
Switching gear to the quarterly business report,
which is a 60 to 80 slide deck.
where we analyze all the business metrics to articulate our business performance.
Because there are a lot of graphs in this deck,
so I'm making sure each graph conveys a key message.
On the topic of data visualization,
there's a very popular platform
when it comes to visualizing data.
I want to introduce Tableau to you,
especially their free Tableau for student program
for those of you who want to work in tech,
and level up your data analytics and data visualization skills.
Tableau is an analytics platform
that allows you to easily explore, visualize,
and interpret massive amounts of data
so we can quickly extract business insights.
A lot of big tech companies
including Verizon and Lenovo
already use Tableau to visualize their data.
It's a highly sought after skill to know
how to interpret data via Tableau Dashboard.
And even better, if you have some basic skills in building a Tableau Dashboard.
So if you're a student looking to improve your data analytical skills,
Tableau for students is the student focused program
that offers e-learning, free training videos,
and other student specific offerings.
Simply download the free Tableau desktop.
And in the program,
you can see tons of real businesses sample datasets.
Let's download this dataset on store sales data.
Quickly import the raw data into your Tableau desktop,
in the data source tab, you can see
all the raw data sources
that help you sort through millions of data.
If I want to analyze sales figure by region,
simply drag and drop those fields to visualize the data
and discover trends.
You can easily arrange the data from the regions
with the highest sales figures to the least,
or vice versa.
You can also customize different visualizations,
such as charts, colors, labels, etc.
If you get stock, you can go to
the student support page to ask questions
and find community answers.
And you can also get the top of certification to prove your skills.
And it's currently 20% off.
If you're a full time student at a credited academic institution,
you can also get a free academic license.
So check out the Tableau for student program
if you're looking to upscale your data visualization
and analytical skills today!
Gonna make a coffee
to get myself going for the rest of the day.
These beans...
smell so good!
It's from...
Where are the beans from by the way?
Devocion?
(their Brooklyn location is one of my fav coffee shops in NYC)
(the process of making coffee)
(is so therapeutic)
(it's like a little treat for myself)
(Albert is into coffee too)
(we invested a lot of time into making a perfcet cup of coffee xD)
(I've been practicing how to steam milk like a barista)
(random hobbies are so fun)
(~let my inner child play~)
(ok show time)
I'm doing it! I'm doing it!
I'm stretching the milk~
I think I did it!
Look at this.
foamy, creamy, oatmilk. (It's the little things)
(this new cup made my day <3 so cute)
(makes me want to work lol)
This is the best coffee ever.
Looking at the view
and we'll do our performance report.
For the performance report,
I'm giving our leadership a quick summary
on how our markets have been performing.
So I'm looking at our data dashboard on the right
and visualizing my data insights on the left in a deck.
And here's my step by step guide
on how I build a great data visualization.
Let's say you're the business analyst at Facebook,
and you're being asked to analyze the number of new users
across its suite of products in Q4 2023,
assuming they only have four products.
Messenger, dating,
Marketplace, and Groups.
Step 1, benchmarking.
Always have a point of comparison when visualizing
so you can tell a story
about whether this number is good or not.
The common mistake is to visualize like this.
Even though you can see that
Messenger brought in 100 million users in Q4
and then Marketplace and so on.
The graph only tells us the facts.
It doesn't tell us a story about
how the users have been performing.
One of my favorite ways to benchmark data
is to compare it against historical data.
So in this case, Q4 in previous years.
This method still shows us Q4 2023 performance,
and it also shows us how each product
has been performing over time
to justify our current performance.
Always think about how you can tell a story in your graph.
but, we are not done yet!
tip 1: use color effectively.
The focal point is on Q4 2023
so highlight the focal point
and the rest can be shaded in gray
to maintain clarity and focus.
When showing historical data,
limited to three past years
or three past quarters
to avoid cluttering the graph.
Step 2, annotation.
The goal of data visualization is to help your audience
see patterns for business insights.
I use arrows, textboxes
and colors to direct viewers' attention
so they can understand this graph quickly.
Here, I'm using arrows to highlight the pattern of all the products
experiencing a decline over the years in Q4.
And interestingly,
Facebook Messenger is the only one on the rise.
Step 3, call out the insight.
So you're noticing the pattern,
then ask yourself,
why is that?
What insight are you trying to convey
with this pattern?
Traditionally,
many people would write the insight
on the right side of the graph.
I still do that,
but I also include a super summarized insight
in the graph as a callout box.
This way when people look at it,
they know exactly what it's about
without needing to read the full text.
So strong growth due to integration with Instagram.
Our new graph now tells a story on its own.
and this allows the audience to
focus their attention more on the business,
not the data.
So like, "Huh.
Interesting that Instagram integration could boost user growth.
Why is that? What's the opportunity here?"
A good graph doesn't need extra explanation.
It should visually summarize the the key points
you're trying to make
I'm gonna make some pot chicken noodle soup
because it's really cold these days.
What are you eating?
Typical lunch.
Doesn't look too pretty
but it's got all of essential macronutrients. (egg white, avocado, chicken patties)
Bye~
You wanna eat my chicken noodle soup?
No.
Yeah you don't eat lunch
I've been practicing my latte art.
Wooow~
Just drew this little heart here.
For who? For me or for you?
You can have it. You want it?
no I don't. thank you
I'll scoop it and give it to you.
(what's this pick up line)
Back to his bistro table~
(I crave warm soup when it's cold)
(this instant pot soup recipe only take 5 min to prep)
-ginger (1-2 slice) -1 pack of chicken thigh (with bones) -mushrooms (3-4) -goji berries (~20) -red dates (x5) -rice wine (2 tbs)
(add water until it reaches 'max' line)
You might wanna move, (~30 min on high pressure later~)
cause I'm gonna open this.
It's gonna burn your face off.
You want that?
Sure, do it.
You do?!
No, seriously. -Do it.
I'm scared for you.
I need to hold Bella
to make sure she doesn't get scared of the noise.
You're holding her like you're holding your child.
(what's happening?)
(kimchi, the secret combo)
(soup test)
Trying the cucumber I marinated yesterday
Yo, this is so good!
(gotta layer them all.)
(rewatching Boys over Flowers on Netflix)
(Reliving my middle school days)
I've been craving fruits as my sweets.
(my job inspires my youtube content)
(I've been doing lots of data analyses at work)
(so it inspired me teach data visualization in this video)
I'm a very visual person.
I always draw things out and brainstorm
This is the brainstorming backbone
for the data visualization tip in this video.
Draw the visual first,
and then I write the script.
(build a presentation)
(my editor then works on the animation)
providing feedback to editor (to make it easy for you!)
(my friends think I'm crazy)
(because I'm always working)
(To that I tell them,)
("If I can teach it, then it means I've mastered it")
(While you learn from me, I also get to master my craft during the process!)
Bella!
Let's go~
Let's go~ (it's her keyword)
I take you on a pee trip
her litto jacket
I accidentally filmed it on time lapse, but...
but she knows where she's going,
the dog park.
pee ✅
I thought I'd join the playtime,
get some cardio in.
Quick touch up before my meeting.
Favorite blush these days. (it's transparent!)
It brings out the best color according to your skin tone.
Fenty Beauty lip gloss.
Hey~
(4:00PM Presenting the QBR)
For this meeting,
instead of walking you through the whole deck,
which is like 60 slides,
we'll just go through the first 10 slides
that has all the key summaries.
After the meeting,
I'll also send you the link to the deck
so you can make comments, etc.
Any questions before I start?
So I'm gonna present my screen,
let me know if you see it.
(back to responding Slack messages)
(Closing out a few workstreams bc)
(I'm going to TAIWAN for a month!!)
