Transcripts
hello everyone my name is Miguel Palos
and today I'm going to be walking you
through how to create an assignment
rubric using chat GPT before we begin I
do want to share that I will be creating
two different types of rubrics in this
video the first will be your traditional
rubric with predefined ratings and the
second will be a rubric that has a free
form space allowing the assessor to fill
in comments that pertain to each
criteria as their grading student work
to start off we will go to the
assignments page within our canas course
and locate an assignment that we wish to
develop a rubric for as you can see here
for the purpose of this video I have two
assignments set aside so let's open up
the first one and we will see a pretty
thoroughly built out prompt for this
assignment uh really guiding students
through the ins and outs of what they'll
need to do and what questions they'll
need to answer how they will need to
submit and stuff like that but if we
scroll down to the bottom you'll see
that there's no rubric attached to this
assignment and that's because it hasn't
been developed yet so what I like to do
is I like to create a PDF print that
omits the resources at the bottom
because that can muddy what needs to be
on the rubric so we'll save it as a PDF
both the task and the instructions and
we'll use that to upload to chat GPT to
generate a rubric so let's skip on over
to chat GPT and to kind of warm up chat
GPT to the task that I'm going to ask it
to carry out I like to really just start
the conversation with a simple
hello I would like to develop
a rubric for an
assignment that I
am
creating and so we'll hit
enter of course it'll respond sure I can
help you out that could you provide me
with some details about the assignment
specifically what are the key objectives
and criteria that you want to assess so
so I am going to respond with I am
uploading the assignment
details can you please create a rubric
that has
four
ratings for each
criteria
distinguished proficient
basic and
non
performance and then we'll attach the
assignment that we have here we'll hit
enter and it will start to generate
different criteria for grading so as you
can see here it has generated some
criteria for a rubric for us to fill in
into canvas however I want it to be a
little bit more specific regarding the
essay questions so I'm actually going to
ask it
to
create a criteria for each
question students will be
asked so here it's generating a rubric
with a criteria for each one of the main
questions that they'll be answering in
this assignment uh which I think is
great there are a few additional
categories that I don't feel are as
applicable because it's really cut and
dry they're being asked to answer the
three
questions um I do like the section on
essay structure organization and grammar
style and formatting however I would
like to combine those I'll actually ask
it to
combine the
sections essay
structure and
organization
grammar spelling and style
and
formatting and
citations into one
section and here it will give us another
revised rubric with
that now I would like to remove the
additional relevant issues in the use of
readings and lectures so we'll go about
and do
that and of course it'll carry that out
for
us and lastly we can ask it to structure
it in a table format so we can see it
all together categorizing the different
values of points for each
question
okay and now it will actually split it
up into a table format with the
different point values for each one and
we can kind of look at that and make
adjustments from there so what we'll do
now is we'll open up can side by side
with chat GPT so that we can kind of
carry over and start building out this
rubric so let's start building the
rubric we will copy the name of the
assignment and we will title it down
there uh we do have four criteria that
we commonly use which are distinguished
proficient basic and non-performance so
we will plug those in there it looks
like for this rubric we have everything
split equal equally 25 points each uh I
don't know whether or not that will be
the final Point separation that the
instructor decides to go with um we are
just kind of plugging that in for
demonstration purposes to review this
with the faculty member who is serving
as the subject matter expert so we'll
create a 25 Point here but we'll title
it as the first
question and then we will create another
Criterion based on that with the second
question the
autonomy the indigenous response to
colonialism and the last one we kind of
condense into essay structure grammar
style and citation
and so we have our four sections here
and as we go through and we add these
components to the rubric in canvas we
can alter the language to modify it in
whichever way we see fit sometimes when
we do have experience working with a
faculty member we know kind of the
language that they would want to use and
we can kind of replicate it in these
rubrics
um but I always think it's good practice
to verify this with the faculty member
making sure that everything is to their
liking and allowing them to have the
final say in any minor adjustments that
are going to be added to the rubric so
we've got our rubric all filled in here
and we'll then go down and we'll select
use this rubric for assignment grading
and then we'll click create rubric and
the rubric is created and the last part
of this process is to thoroughly go
through these rubrics with the faculty
remember to make sure that everything is
to their liking and making sure that any
changes that they would like to make to
the rubric are implemented before we
finish the course development process
now I'll go back to the assignments page
to open up the next assignment which we
will use for the free form comments
style of rubric which as you can see
here kind of fits better with the
assignment type we have assignment
components that are broken down by Point
values so we have these components of
the assignment that are separated and we
will go through this a very similar way
where we will highlight the instructions
and the task of the assignment we will
print it out as a PDF and we will
actually pull that into a new chat GPT
chat so let's go back to chat GPT in a
new chat we will start the process Over
Again by asking it hello can you help
me develop a
rubric for an assignment
that I
am
developing so sometimes it asks you for
detailed things and you can give
components if you don't have any aspects
of the assignment itself but because we
do have the assignment we will of course
upload
that and of course it'll go through its
process
um and for this one it's actually
reading the assignment and showing off
the different aspects so we do have the
financial ratios we have the assumptions
we have the different components that
are cited in the assignment prompt that
are being generated here and that is all
well and good however I would like to
make it more specific for each category
we can include uh additional modifiers
like please make sure each
description is learner
centered and is no longer
than one
sentence for
each
criteria and then we'll see what it
comes back with and as you can see here
we now have a description for each
criteria however they kind of split it a
little bit so I'm going to actually go
and ask it
to modify each section of this rubric to
have a to have a
single
description and we'll see what that
comes back
with so see now it's giving me for each
one recreating the financial statements
what a distinguished submission will
look like
and we do have it kind of saying you I
don't know if I like that language so I
would actually ask it to change
it can
you reward each
description to be
in the
third person
so here we go we've got uh descriptions
that are in the third person and I do
kind of like what's going on here so
let's shift back to our split screen
where we have
the assignment open along with the chat
GPT window so we'll click create the
rubric and we
will do a project one rubric we will
check that there are going to be writing
free form comments and then we will do a
description for each criteria we start
with the recreation of the financial
statements the student accurately
recreates the income statement balance
sheet presenting in a clear and
organized and professional manner so we
have that and we'll just kind of do that
for each one and it looks like it's also
pulling the point values in there too so
we can make those adjustments as well so
now we'll go through and we will
create these different Criterion with
the point values that we have on the
assignment page itself and really what
this enables us to do is to be able to
move the ball forward um rubrics can be
a little bit time consuming to develop
for faculty and I think that in
utilizing chat GPT we're able to
actually get something built out so that
they can see a finished product and not
look at it from such a conceptualized
lens so once again we have a another
finished rubric that we utilized uh chat
TPT to fill out all the contents and
really this is an estimation of what
should be on a rubric uh it is totally
in the faculty's hands to really
determine what they want to keep and
what they want to change and I think
that this just allows us to get
something formatted and semi-finished so
that we can take it to them and allow
them to finish out the process of
developing these rubrics
and there you have it this has been the
process of using chat GPT to develop
outlines for rubrics that we can then
present to our faculty as suggestions
thank you
