Transcripts
This game is called "three ball". It is for grade 4 to grade 8 students. You will need 3
balls. Thanks Steve Mercado for this game idea. It was the "game of the year" in his school. I
tried it in my school and it was awesome! The students have really enjoyed it. I suggest you
try this game. To begin, you can use a basketball court. Or you can use any area. But a basketball
court works best. Place two balls down on the free-throw lines. Place one ball on the middle
line. It's really easy to set up. The players will begin by standing outside of the court. They
will stand there and wait for the go signal (the whistle blow). Once the whistle blows to start
the game, all players will enter the court and start playing. The goal of the game is to be the
last person remaining inside the court. We call that "last man standing". You can choose to give
a prize to the winning player if you want. OK. In this game, whenever a player gets hit by a ball,
they must exit the playing area. Use your own dodgeball rules, whatever works best for you.
But if a player gets hit, he is "out". If a player has a ball in his hand and takes a
step, he must exit the playing area. Players can't walk with the ball. They can not move with the
ball. However, they can spin or pivot to change direction. But they are not allowed to walk or run
when in possession of a ball. If a player is "out", he must exit the basketball court. So
whether a player is hit by a ball, or moves while in possession of a ball, then he must leave the
basketball court. Players who are "out" can get back "in". They do this by collecting a ball
and trying to hit another player who is inside. If successful, they switch spots. So if you're
"out" you can get back "in". Some players aren't "out" for very long because they get to a ball
that had rolled out. They throw that ball, and if they can hit somebody, then they get back "in".
Players who are "out" can also run around the outside of the court and try to tag someone who is
standing too close to the edge. If a player gets tagged, the two players switch spots. Those are
two different ways that players can get back in. 1) if they hit someone with a ball. 2) if they can
tag somebody who is inside and close to the edge. However, "out" players cannot step onto the court.
The final rule is: if a player steps out of the boundary line, then they
are "out". Players must be careful to not step outside of the court. There's also an
extra rule that you can use if you want. This is a bonus rule. It's called a "jailbreak"
rule. This means that all players who are out can get back in. It occurs when any one of the "out"
players successfully scores a basketball shot from the outside. We will examine that rule later. OK.
So we will start from the beginning. The players are standing outside of the line. The teacher
blows the whistle. The players enter the court, and some arrive at a ball. You must imagine
that the players without a ball are continuously moving around. The animation doesn't show that,
but pretend that everyone's moving around. They are trying to dodge the balls. The
players that do have a ball cannot move. If a player throws a ball and somebody gets hit,
that player must exit the court. They are "out". Meanwhile, a player was walking with
a ball. That's not allowed (perhaps they realized it, or somebody caught them walking). So they must
exit. A player has thrown and missed. And now the player on the outside has retrieved that ball.
Remember that the players on the outside can throw a ball and try to hit somebody. If successful then
that player is "out" and they are back "in". We see one player sneaked up on somebody and
tagged the player who wasn't paying attention. So that player is out. And he can re-enter the game.
The most common "out" is when a player gets hit by a ball. That player must exit. Now we will
imagine that the game has proceeded for awhile, and many players are "out". Remember the bonus
rule? The "jailbreak" rule: every player who is "out" can return if an "out" player scores
a basketball shot. Obviously we are using the basketball hoops. This is a good time to mention
that the players who are out are allowed to walk with a ball. The players might want to
get into a better position. So on the court you can't step with a ball. But if you're "out" and
you have a ball, you are allowed to move. I also implement a "5 second rule" with the ball. That
means a player can't hold onto the ball for longer than 5 seconds. We see then, the player
moved to a better position. He took a shot and scored! Therefore everybody gets to move back
inside. It basically restarted the round. Back to the beginning! The final rule which I haven't
mentioned yet (you can use this rule if you want) is a catching rule. If somebody throws a ball
and somebody else catches it, then the thrower is out. Though if a player is on the outside, and he
catches a ball that was thrown, he can re-enter. He would switch places with the person who threw
it. This game can get very intense. The balls are flying! People are running! Lots of action!
It's very interesting and unique. I've never seen anything like it. Thanks Steve Mercado!
