"Some Pharisees came to Jesus,

'Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?'

Jesus answered, 'Have you not read

that the one who made them at the beginning

"made them male and female,"

and said, "For this reason

a man shall leave his father and mother

and be joined to his wife,

and the two shall become one flesh"?

So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.'

They said to him,

'Why then did Moses command us

to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?'

'It was because you were so hard-hearted

that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives,

CONGREGANTS: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

What a stark contrast

between the reading from Ezekiel

and the reading from Matthew.

The reading from Ezekiel speaks about the most beautiful

and the most extraordinary description

of a covenantal renewal.

God is faithful to God's people.

It involves two things,

fidelity and endurance or stamina.

God is faithful to the Israelites

no matter what they do.

The Israelites have broken the Torah.

They have gone after the idols

of their neighbouring kings and pagan rulers.

They have not kept the Sabbath,

and yet God is faithful to them.

Not only that,

but that fidelity of God will endure through the ages.

On the other hand,

our Gospel today seems to be

all about divorce, separation,

breakup, and disunity.

Jesus wants to speak

about the ideals of marriage

and the values of marriage,

and so he says, "From the beginning..."

So, at the very core of marriage

is God's love for God's people,

and marriage is supposed to be patterned on that.

That is the ideal,

and the values of marriage is an openness to family,

as we heard in the reading.

God has created them male and female,

and so, even when Adam and Eve

had broken the commandments--

I'm sorry. Even as Adam and Eve had disobeyed the Lord

and they were expelled from the garden of Eden,

God made sure that they were dressed properly

and they were let out of the garden.

And their procreative--

faculties, their procreative abilities,

their fertility was not taken away from them,

and therefore that is the value of marriage,

is an openness to families.

Jesus wanted to speak about the ideals of marriage

and the values of marriage,

but the Pharisees were having none of that.

They wanted to test Jesus

to see whether his orthodoxy

was the same as theirs.

They wanted to see,

and so they quoted Moses's law.

A man can divorce his wife

if he gives her a writ of dismissal.

Already from the beginning,

there were two standards of morality right there,

one for men, one for women.

A man committed adultery

only if he broke another man's marriage,

if his adultery was breaking up another man's marriage.

He could go into a brothel.

He could go into prostitutes.

But he wouldn't be considered committing adultery.

But a woman, if she slept with anybody,

was considered to be loose and committed adultery.

Now, Jesus did not want

to ignore this reality

in his time,

but he realized it was a red herring.

He realized that the Scribes and Pharisees

had their minds already fixed on it.

There was no point in arguing about this double standard.

What Jesus wanted to say and wanted to bring across

was that at the very core of marriage,

at the very heart of marriage,

and therefore he would say,

"From the beginning,

God created them man and wife,

man and woman,

husband and wife."

And that is the very heart of marriage.

Divorce was very easy in those days,

partly because men considered women

as chattel.

Men considered women as something

that you could easily dispose about,

and all you had to do is to give her a writ of dismissal.

And that was the end of it all.

In our own days,

that hasn't changed very much.

A man will show that he is macho

by having any number of people in his bed.

He is considered strong,

but if a woman was supposed to do the same thing,

she would be considered easygoing

and loose morals.

But divorce today has got far different pressures.

Oh, sorry. Marriages today has got far different pressures

from the time of Jesus.

There, at least, you had the whole family to bolster you up.

We are more isolated.

Another thing that we find is,

we have a sense of entitlement nowadays,

a sense of selfishness and self-centred,

and you can see that in ordinary small things of life.

You will see people with their cellphones

standing right in the middle of a doorway.

People have to pass, and they couldn't care less,

or they'll stand right in the middle of traffic.

They couldn't care less.

It's a sense of--

We're missing something in our world today,

but the real cause for the breakup of marriage

is a lack of communication.

And a lack of communication

comes from something very, very simple.

Our counsellors tell us that.

We are so caught up in the devices that we have today

that if we haven't been able to articulate,

we haven't been able to express,

we haven't been able to share

what is deep down within us,

we lose the words.

We lose the emotion.

And the second thing that we find in our world today is,

we don't want to encounter somebody.

If we want to meet somebody,

we'll send them a text message, an email.

We'll send them all sorts of things

rather than going and expressing our self,

and St. Paul in the letter to the Galatians says

there are so many emotions in our lives

that need to be expressed.

There is joy. There's peace.

There's happiness.

But there's also envy and anger,

and all these things, if we bottle down within ourselves,

all we do is, we take it out on the person we love most.

And in our world today,

when we want to even break up with somebody

or we want to express something,

we send a text message

or we send an emoji, an emoticon,

and we've got 32 different faces to express everything

from joy to sorrow to frowning to anger

and all these other thing.

But the beauty about marriage, as Jesus said--

from the very beginning,

we have within our faith

that God giving us the wisdom,

the knowledge, and a sense of awe

that we can bring into marriage.

The point is, we have got all these gifts.

There is only one answer:

Use them and build up,

because from the very beginning,

the ideal and the value of marriage is what we live for,

and that is what we care for.
