I'm Joyce Chen, I'm an associate professor
in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental,
And Development Economics.
For students in economics to take courses
in other disciplines helps us to understand
how economic activity has spillover effects
or externalities on other parts of our communities.
On the sort of social fabric, on cultural practices,
on mental health that we oftentimes
forget about when we just think about money,
and goods and resources.
And for folks outside of economics
I think understanding basic principles of economics
is important because again those are oftentimes
what motivate people initially.
Just meeting those basic needs, getting adequate food
and shelter and understanding that is always
going to be at the root of the choices that people make
and then how we kind of expand the choice set from there,
I think is very useful.
I wish that I had known as a first year
student how precious actually this time is in undergraduate
and I know that I'm very privileged
and I had a lot of opportunities that other students might not
have but it really was the one time in my life
when I could just engage intellectually with everything
and not really have to worry about anything else.
I had a dining card and a dorm room.
And when I reflect back on it now
the number of opportunities that were available in terms
of outside speakers, and seminars, and performances,
just I've never been in another environment
like that where I had the freedom
to engage intellectually and to be with other people who
were in the same space and in the same headspace of just
wanting to engage intellectually with everything around them.
My undergraduate advisor in economics
was really instrumental in getting me involved in research
and working in developing countries.
And actually living and working in developing country
was a really formative experience for me
too so I would definitely recommend a study abroad kind
of experience.
I think because when you're there
and you actually have to get stuff done
it's very different than being there on a vacation
or on a trip and you start to see
more of the realities of what's happening on the ground.
I think when we go just traveling
we tend to romanticize things more
and when you have to live and function somewhere
you understand the constraints a little bit better
and where there are some roadblocks that we might
be able to address, say with economics
or with different policies.
My mentor was very welcoming.
It was scary initially and there are definitely professors.
I went to office hours for who were scary
and who I never would have asked for extra opportunities
but I think it's important to remember
that a lot of academics are also very eccentric.
Sometimes what seems like not friendliness is just
a little bit of social awkwardness
and so I would encourage students to try
to push through that as well.
I think I'll speak just for myself, but from the friends
I've spoken with and colleagues I've spoken with we
actually really love talking to undergraduate students.
We don't love talking about getting
an extra point on your quiz, or your homework or something,
but we do really love chatting about what you're interested in
and helping you find your passion,
and helping you find things that you're excited to work on.
And then we like sharing our experiences
and telling you what worked well for us, what
hasn't worked out well for us.
We love having you involved in our projects.
So I would really just encourage everyone
to talk to your professors, go to office hours,
even if you don't have a specific question just
try to get to know them.
