play00:03

This is not the Apple car,

play00:06

because officially it never existed,

play00:09

and now it never will.

play00:12

Ten years after starting work on a car, Apple has given up.

play00:16

The company had some wild ideas about the future of the car,

play00:19

as we're about to tell you.

play00:20

The vehicle was supposed to be as revolutionary as the iPhone.

play00:25

Carmakers were running scared.

play00:27

The iPhone had eviscerated massive businesses like Nokia and Motorola.

play00:32

What if Apple did the same to the car industry?

play00:36

They really felt this strong confidence They could take out General Motors.

play00:42

They could make a better Tesla.

play00:44

And they had this ambition to do something that really had not been done before.

play00:48

It was never going to work.

play00:50

This is a tale of grandiose plans to invent a new kind of car.

play00:54

Undone by strategic mistakes.

play00:57

The rise, fall, rise

play00:59

And then death of what was codenamed Project Titan

play01:09

Apple is incredibly secretive.

play01:11

The company doesn't talk about new products until they're ready.

play01:14

So never publicly admitted to working on a car.

play01:17

In fact, the closest that Apple CEO Tim Cook ever

play01:20

got to doing so was in this interview with me in 2017.

play01:24

There is a major disruption looming.

play01:27

He proceeded to lay out three innovations

play01:29

that he predicted would upturn the car industry.

play01:31

The first was electric vehicles.

play01:34

If you've driven an all electric

play01:36

car, it's actually a marvelous experience.

play01:40

Plus, you have ride sharing on top of this.

play01:43

So services like Uber and Lyft and finally self-driving cars.

play01:48

We’re focusing on autonomous systems.

play01:51

Clearly, one purpose of autonomous systems is self-driving cars.

play01:55

we sort of see it as the mother of all A.I.

play01:58

projects.

play01:59

Each of those technologies seem to present an opportunity

play02:02

to disrupt the $2 trillion car industry.

play02:05

Initially for the rationale behind the car

play02:07

was what Apple does, delivering a piece of hardware.

play02:11

And the car is that piece of hardware. And then built on top of that hardware,

play02:16

that becomes a platform to deliver services and experiences.

play02:21

So in that respect, the car followed the Apple strategy.

play02:26

Let's scroll back to 2014,

play02:28

when it all started, three years before my interview with Cook.

play02:33

The beginning of the Apple car project was actually the company exploring

play02:36

if it should buy Tesla.

play02:38

They ended up not doing that and instead decided

play02:40

to start exploring what it would take to build their own car on their own.

play02:44

They put some of the brightest minds at the company on this.

play02:47

The hardware division was granted billions of dollars

play02:50

in funding to hire anyone it needed inside Apple or outside Apple.

play02:55

They hired people from Porsche, Lamborghini, Audi,

play02:59

you name it, to come over there and build a car.

play03:03

Jony Ive, Apple's design chief at the time, had this idea

play03:06

to recreate the old school Volkswagen

play03:10

bus from the 1950s and the 1960s,

play03:13

But the idea was not to build a car for people who love cars today,

play03:17

but build the future of the car.

play03:23

All sorts of ideas are thrown around.

play03:25

They consider only selling the car in white.

play03:27

There'd be no steering wheel or front facing seats.

play03:30

And passengers would control everything with touchscreens and Siri.

play03:34

For all the big ideas and blue sky thinking

play03:36

however, the project soon starts to hit problems and there's confusion over

play03:41

whether the priority should be to compete with Tesla in electric cars

play03:44

or Google, which was making big leaps in self-driving vehicles.

play03:48

By 2016 there was a ton of disagreement on the Apple executive team.

play03:52

There were difficulties, figuring out a way to actually produce the vehicle.

play03:56

There were concerns over profits.

play03:58

Enter Bob Mansfield, a semi-retired executive

play04:01

who had developed products such as the MacBook Air.

play04:04

It's the first of many leadership and direction changes to hit the project,

play04:08

and it'll entail laying off hundreds of engineers.

play04:12

Mansfield tells them that rather than building a car, Apple

play04:15

will focus on developing the most advanced driverless technology.

play04:18

Level five Autonomy.

play04:21

By building the self-driving brain they really gave themselves options.

play04:26

On one hand, they were able to partner.

play04:27

They talked partnerships with Tesla, with Mercedes Benz, with BMW,

play04:33

but it also gave them opportunity to later go back to build their own car

play04:37

and have this apple like experience.

play04:39

Apple also invests in Didi, the Chinese equivalent of Uber.

play04:42

So it might one day put its self-driving technology into

play04:45

Didi's ride sharing service.

play04:48

The company plows ahead with testing and reports start coming in

play04:52

of Lexus test cards kitted out with Apple's driverless technology

play04:56

appearing on the roads of California in 2017,

play05:00

Fast forward two years to 2019.

play05:02

Uber goes public and it's a big disappointment that shows

play05:05

ridesharing isn't a great business with no prospect of Apple like profits.

play05:10

So one of Cook's three pillars starts to look

play05:13

a little bit less revolutionary.

play05:16

At the same time.

play05:17

Tesla goes from a $50 billion valuation

play05:20

to a trillion dollar company in less than two years.

play05:24

Electric vehicles suddenly seem more appealing.

play05:27

I think the early success of Tesla led people believe that

play05:31

maybe there was opportunity in the car industry to work with bigger margins.

play05:36

That helps give Apple the confidence to make another pivot.

play05:40

Around that time, Doug Field, the Tesla executive who developed the Model 3

play05:44

and took over the Apple car project in 2017,

play05:47

calls a meeting to show off what his team has been able to pull together.

play05:52

Apple has this secretive several hundred acre test facility

play05:57

in the heart of the Arizona desert outside of Phenix.

play06:01

they gathered a bunch of senior people in the Apple car

play06:04

team alongside Tim Cook, and others.

play06:07

Cook is impressed by what he sees, according to people who were present,

play06:11

and says he'll finally throw his full weight behind the project.

play06:15

Apple will build an electric car that has full driverless technology.

play06:19

But even that decision doesn't last long.

play06:22

Field leaves to join Ford in 2021 and is replaced by Kevin Lynch,

play06:26

a longtime Apple manager who worked on the watch.

play06:30

What's your plan, car?

play06:34

It's becoming clear that autonomous

play06:36

cars are a long way away, maybe even a decade or more.

play06:40

So there's another flip flop away from self-driving tech.

play06:44

It's the least ambitious version of the project yet.

play06:47

Make an electric car that competes directly with Tesla.

play06:50

But by 2023, the outside world is changing.

play06:54

Artificial intelligence starts consuming the tech industry.

play06:57

And after Tesla's early successes, electric vehicles

play07:01

are facing a reality check.

play07:03

November 2022 saw the release of chat GPT.

play07:07

As the world goes A.I. crazy

play07:09

Google has its own big A.I.

play07:10

division and Microsoft is the biggest investor in Open AI,

play07:14

the developer of chat GPT.

play07:16

And while there's plenty of AI innovation under the hood of Apple's products,

play07:20

it's still unclear what Tim Cook's big generative AI play will be.

play07:26

Where Apple needs to catch up is in that interface

play07:30

between the consumer and the generative A.I. engine

play07:34

that has a name like Copilot or Gemini.

play07:37

And the electric vehicle market is starting to lose its luster with

play07:41

sales growth slowing for three reasons.

play07:44

EVs are expensive and high interest rates mean they're even harder to afford.

play07:49

The first generation of EVs are now hitting the second hand market

play07:53

and they're not holding their value as well as combustion engine cars.

play07:57

Established carmakers are starting to release their EV models,

play08:00

meaning competition is tougher and profits are lower.

play08:04

One specific part of Apple's success is that on the hardware side,

play08:09

they have by and large between 25 and 30% margin.

play08:13

That is impossible on a car.

play08:16

All of this provokes another final rethink at Apple.

play08:20

The three megatrends that Cook highlighted in 2017 have all lost their appeal.

play08:25

Self-driving isn't happening anytime soon.

play08:28

Ridesharing isn't a great business, and electric vehicles probably can't

play08:32

deliver the kinds of profits that Apple shareholders expect.

play08:36

They have some of the world's best minds on Artificial Intelligence

play08:39

working on this system that may never come to light because it is so difficult.

play08:43

On the other hand, they have this separate AI team trying

play08:46

to catch up to Open AI and Microsoft and Google on generative A.I.

play08:51

So Tim Cook makes a big decision. On February 26th,

play08:56

after most people have left work, the car team gets

play08:59

an email announcing an all hands meeting the next day.

play09:03

And people started to realize something is up.

play09:05

Then 10 a.m.

play09:06

the next morning, they all gathered into conference rooms and around their desks

play09:10

and they tuned in to a video announcement. It was a 12 minute presentation.

play09:15

They were pretty succinct.

play09:16

Thank you for all your efforts.

play09:18

We're immediately winding down Project Titan.

play09:20

The Apple car is dead.

play09:23

Those working on self-driving technology will join Apple's main A.I. group.

play09:27

The rest have to find new jobs inside or outside the company.

play09:32

Repurposing the people that were working on Project Titan to A.I.

play09:36

makes sense given the opportunity in A.I.

play09:39

It solves a lot of problems for Apple.

play09:42

It gets a bunch of top A.I.

play09:44

minds working on its main A.I.

play09:46

goals,

play09:46

and it can reallocate the billions of dollars a year it's spending on the car

play09:50

towards developing A.I.

play09:53

That tech could

play09:54

be essential to the future success of the iPhone,

play09:57

the device that still accounts for the majority of Apple's revenue.

play10:01

Look at this chart.

play10:03

After years of massive growth, Apple is struggling to grow revenue.

play10:07

Without the car, investors are wondering where the next leg of growth

play10:11

will come from.

play10:12

Some think that could be the Vision Pro.

play10:15

The problem is that if that device achieves everything Apple

play10:18

wants over the next few years, it could end up replacing the iPhone.

play10:22

You may not own both.

play10:25

It's something that has the real potential in the next half decade

play10:28

to replace your iPhone, to be the future of that product.

play10:32

But Apple needs supplementary revenue.

play10:34

They need wholly new product categories that don't take away from others.

play10:39

And as carmakers start to question just how profitable the electric vehicle

play10:42

market can be, the fact that Apple has given up is hardly a vote of confidence.

play12:36

fast that the company has a huge influence over

play12:39

opening AI.

play12:48

This column has found that all three

play16:13

Siri makes it easy

play16:14

to get a lot more done on your iPhone with just your voice.

play16:18

Using a simple command, you can quickly send a text message

play16:21

while you're driving or set a 30 minute timer during your workout.

play16:25

No hands are needed, but serious capable of so much more than you might know.

play16:31

For example, did you know you can restart your iPhone with just your voice?

play16:35

And that's just the start.

play16:37

You probably already know you can save your usernames and passwords

play16:41

across all of your Apple devices.

play16:43

But did you know you can access them quicker with Siri?

play16:46

You can also turn off an annoying alarm.

play16:49

Just tell Siri, turn off my alarm to silence it.

play16:53

Need to find that family or friend using that.

play16:55

Find my feature. Just ask Siri where it is.

play16:59

And then the contact name and a small find my window will appear

play17:03

at the top of the screen showing you exactly where that person is.

play18:16

You that?

play18:17

Yeah. Yeah.

play18:19

Look, I have.

play25:11

Apple is going to reinvent the phone.

play25:14

most advanced phones are called smart phones.

play25:45

iPhone in the incredible

play25:47

that it puts into people's hands has changed the way we

play25:56

play26:10
