play00:05

the past four years I've been a student

play00:07

here at Valdosta State University and

play00:09

it's been a long ride from almost

play00:12

dropping out to leaving ROTC I

play00:14

definitely have my shares of ups and

play00:16

downs hey everybody my name is Austin

play00:19

Dunham and this is my college story and

play00:21

how college changed my life

play00:23

[Music]

play00:28

so the journey began in 2014 after I

play00:32

graduated high school I began my

play00:34

freshman year here at via Sheol and this

play00:38

is when I started to first experience

play00:40

that little bit of freedom in which I

play00:42

honestly never had in high school not

play00:46

saying I couldn't but in high school I

play00:47

was just a really shy person I didn't go

play00:50

out that much and I prefer to just stay

play00:52

indoors play video games and just do

play00:56

indoor stuff and not be that social when

play00:59

it came to like the partying thing and

play01:01

hanging out with friends a lot I guess

play01:04

you can say I was kind of lame in high

play01:06

school I didn't really speak to many

play01:07

people at high school or in class either

play01:10

but that kind of only change once I came

play01:13

here and this is when I started to meet

play01:16

new people I started to discover who I

play01:19

really am and for one I was in the

play01:21

freshmen learning community for the ROTC

play01:23

freshman year class and this is where I

play01:26

met my roommate who weren't friends with

play01:28

today

play01:28

Sam I met another good friend walking

play01:31

Spratly and a whole bunch of other

play01:34

people that I'm still friends with today

play01:36

now being with this group of people I

play01:38

started to experience different things

play01:40

such as my first party going out having

play01:43

fun but with you know friends and also

play01:46

little things like alcohol - I never

play01:48

even had a drink before I came to

play01:50

college so no pun intended college kind

play01:53

of gave me my first step when it came to

play01:55

that stuff now throughout this time I

play01:57

was in ROTC of course and I started to

play02:00

learn more about fitness because I was

play02:03

struggling with my push-ups or my

play02:05

fitness test and I wanted to get better

play02:07

at it so this is when I actually

play02:09

discovered something that I'm really

play02:12

really into till this day and that is

play02:14

Cal aesthetics and fitness it all

play02:17

started with like I said I wanted to get

play02:19

better at push-ups I did my research

play02:20

online I watched tons of YouTube videos

play02:23

I came across these cool videos of

play02:25

people doing amazing skills and tricks

play02:27

on the bars and I wanted to be able to

play02:29

do that and have that strength so that I

play02:32

could impress people and also so that I

play02:34

could pass my test

play02:35

but before we

play02:36

even get into that this is when also I

play02:39

started struggling with school so just a

play02:42

few months down the line like in

play02:44

November it was up coming on finals I

play02:47

was becoming really really D motivated

play02:50

because my classes were a bit harder

play02:52

than what I expected one of them being

play02:55

precalculus it was and this class I had

play02:59

adn so I was about to fell it I didn't

play03:02

I've never felt a class before in my

play03:04

life and never made a D in my life

play03:06

believe it or not and I was very very

play03:09

nervous of what what happened if I was

play03:12

to fail it I was thinking about other

play03:13

options I literally almost dropped out

play03:16

and enlist enlisted in the military I

play03:19

called my mom I was like I'm not gonna

play03:21

do well in this class but I have another

play03:23

plan I'm gonna enlist I'm gonna join the

play03:25

airforce um I don't think college is

play03:28

right for me and my mom was like you

play03:30

know I just take through it you can do

play03:32

it we all been there you're just

play03:34

experiencing your first time doing it

play03:36

and you know I agree with her but still

play03:39

I was super demotivated and I felt like

play03:40

no matter what I do I could not overcome

play03:43

that obstacle of just passing that hard

play03:46

class and so one day I came across this

play03:48

YouTube video it was a motivational

play03:50

YouTube video typical yes but that one

play03:53

motivational video sparked a fire in me

play03:55

to get up and actually start studying

play03:58

super super hard for this final exam in

play04:01

which I had to make an a on it in order

play04:03

to pass the class I would study seven

play04:07

hours a day from the time I woke up to

play04:09

the time it was time to go to bed I

play04:12

would just be studying studying studying

play04:14

I didn't go out I didn't talk to anybody

play04:16

I really just only get up to go eat and

play04:18

everybody thought something was wrong

play04:20

with me because I was studying so hard

play04:22

but through that motivation and that one

play04:24

video that I watched and the dedication

play04:29

and willpower I had to study that led me

play04:32

to getting a 100 on that final exam and

play04:35

I ended up passing the class and

play04:37

obviously staying in schools so that's

play04:41

one thing I learned while I was here my

play04:43

freshman year that there are going to be

play04:45

hard times within college but I've

play04:47

learned

play04:48

overcome those obstacles and power

play04:50

through it and get get through it and

play04:53

all it takes is a little bit of

play04:54

motivation and a spark of Drive now

play04:58

after that after the first semester I

play05:01

pass it I was super happy and this is

play05:03

when I started another journey which has

play05:06

made a huge impact on where I'm at now

play05:08

and that's starting my youtube channel

play05:09

so I started doing Fitness ting Cal

play05:12

aesthetics and fast forward a few months

play05:14

I was at home bored on Christmas break

play05:17

from school and I was like I'm gonna

play05:20

make a fitness video showing my progress

play05:22

of how I've been doing my fitness

play05:25

journey within these few months it was

play05:26

called my four-month transformation

play05:29

video I made this video and I posted it

play05:32

online and that video alone got over a

play05:35

hundred thousand views on my channel

play05:37

then from there I made my popular

play05:40

beginner home workout routine in the

play05:42

backyard by just a few days later and

play05:44

that video was my first video on my new

play05:46

channel to get over a million views so

play05:49

that can I kick start at my youtube

play05:50

channel and from there I never looked

play05:52

back and I've been posting videos ever

play05:54

since then and it was all through my

play05:57

freshman year of college

play05:59

I learned so much within that year I had

play06:01

the greatest of times I had really big

play06:04

friend group and it kind of changed

play06:07

throughout the years which I'll get into

play06:08

but freshman year definitely my most fun

play06:12

and my best year here at the issue so

play06:15

after my freshman year I came back here

play06:17

to I sophomore super motivated super

play06:20

pumped up to finish out the school year

play06:21

this is the year where I took ROTC very

play06:25

very seriously and my grades for that

play06:28

matter because we had to make good

play06:30

grades in order to get was called

play06:31

enrollment allocations to go to field

play06:33

training in which not everybody got to

play06:36

go to field training and it was

play06:37

dependent on your GPA your physical

play06:40

fitness and other means of your

play06:42

performance in RTC

play06:43

and also in school so I took the

play06:47

semester very very seriously and with

play06:50

that being said this was the first year

play06:52

actually got straight A's and I think

play06:55

the only year for that matter but I

play06:58

studied super super hard got this time

play07:01

also

play07:01

to a new relationship which was a new

play07:03

thing for me because in high school I

play07:05

didn't date at all and I wasn't really

play07:07

into that but um sophomore year that

play07:09

kind of changed for me and I I kind of

play07:12

realized I started to find myself

play07:14

freshman year but then I started to

play07:16

figure out who I am when it comes to

play07:18

being close with another person having a

play07:20

relationship and also throughout this

play07:23

time I was a computer information

play07:25

systems major CIS but I discovered that

play07:30

I'm not the greatest at math if you

play07:32

remember from freshman years so the

play07:35

classes got a bit harder very hard

play07:38

actually and this is where something

play07:41

tragic happened I made my first F my

play07:44

first and only FF ever in my life now I

play07:49

wasn't super deep motivated like last

play07:51

time the class honestly which is hard

play07:52

and it was over-the-top for me and you

play07:55

know I'm glad I did that because that

play07:57

led me to changing my major which is the

play07:59

same major I have today and that major

play08:02

is Business Management so I went from

play08:04

CIS to business management switched up

play08:06

my classes it was a few a few wasted

play08:09

classes that you know I wasted time on

play08:12

that kind of pushed me back in regards

play08:14

to graduation but like I said no regrets

play08:17

I was still doing very very well and I

play08:19

brought my GPA back up the semester that

play08:22

I made all A's and which was the spring

play08:24

semester of the second year and also in

play08:26

spring semester actually got in

play08:28

enrollment allocation to go to field

play08:30

training for RTC and I was super super

play08:32

pumped up about that because like I said

play08:34

the past year is not everybody got to go

play08:37

and that was one of the top candidates

play08:39

to go and I was just super excited super

play08:41

ready for summer so I can just keep

play08:43

training keep trying to keep training

play08:45

and I would kept posting YouTube videos

play08:47

to my channel and this is where it might

play08:49

kind of really really blew up Irish over

play08:52

50,000 subscribers I posted my

play08:55

five-minute home chest workout video

play08:56

which is the most popular video on my

play08:58

channel to date with over 4 million

play09:00

views and I was just super motivated

play09:03

super happy I was in a good place and I

play09:05

can see just my progress from last year

play09:08

and

play09:09

I was just excited going into year three

play09:11

my junior year which was from 2016 to

play09:15

2017 this is where I kind of phase out

play09:19

of that partying stage I've experienced

play09:22

my freedom the past two years and this

play09:24

is where I started really focusing on

play09:26

self improvement and things within my

play09:29

business and this is when a tea workout

play09:31

was born the actual brand name that LLC

play09:34

and all that stuff

play09:36

I started getting serious with in

play09:38

business and I wanted to scale that

play09:40

because I started thinking about my

play09:42

future after I graduate it was getting

play09:45

to that point where you know I'm in

play09:46

college now but what am I gonna do in

play09:48

the future and with that being said this

play09:52

is where I started to question my future

play09:54

with ROTC I came back from field

play09:57

training I did well I was actually the

play10:00

trainer of the cadets who are going to

play10:03

fill training the following year and I

play10:05

was having I was having a good time in

play10:07

RTC it just led me to think about my

play10:10

future like I said because I started to

play10:12

see more success within my youtube and

play10:14

the business was doing well and with the

play10:17

projection chart it was going to do

play10:18

better and better each year so I didn't

play10:22

really talk to anybody about my

play10:24

questioning with RTC I just kind of kept

play10:26

it in my head people were asking me you

play10:29

know all the time but I was like I'm

play10:30

gonna stay in there's something I want

play10:32

to do and I made it this far already so

play10:35

why not go ahead and stay in but on the

play10:38

inside I was questioning and having a

play10:40

battle with myself if I really wanted to

play10:43

stay in and I was gonna see how the next

play10:47

few years went or how the next year went

play10:49

and if I happened to like X 3 or X 5 my

play10:53

business growth then that's when I

play10:56

probably was gonna make the decision to

play10:58

stop RTC this is also the time which was

play11:01

pretty pivotal for me is when I got the

play11:05

car that I Drive now my new car is a

play11:07

2015 RS Camaro and the reason that's so

play11:10

just impactful for me is because I was

play11:13

driving the same little Toyota Corolla

play11:15

since high school

play11:16

and just like how was what Fitness it

play11:18

kind of in a way demotivated me because

play11:20

I felt all the success but

play11:23

I wanted to ask something to show from

play11:25

that success so that's when I started

play11:28

talking with my mom and that summer

play11:31

after those message is when I got a new

play11:34

car even though she told me to write out

play11:36

my old car draw out college and get

play11:38

another one after I graduated I still

play11:41

didn't listen and I got a new one but

play11:43

the reason I did too is because my

play11:45

grades were very very good throughout

play11:47

these two semesters and I stayed above a

play11:49

3.0 GPA for this whole entire time

play11:53

alright so year for 2017 to 2018 this

play11:57

was a huge pivotal moment in my college

play12:00

career and also within my future this is

play12:04

when I decided to actually leave RCC and

play12:09

that was through a discussion with my

play12:12

parents with people who were close to me

play12:15

I wrote out a big sheet of pros and cons

play12:18

if I was to leave or stay and I

play12:21

consulted with many many people and I

play12:24

decided to leave it was the best option

play12:26

for me and from what I want to do with

play12:30

my future and where I see myself going

play12:32

that's why I decided to leave RTC now

play12:36

RTC was literally the biggest impact on

play12:39

me throughout my time here one because

play12:41

it helped me discover my passion for

play12:43

fitness and Cal aesthetics which started

play12:46

my youtube channel and from there I

play12:48

learned a lot about myself and my

play12:50

leadership and how I could be a leader

play12:53

because like I said in high school I was

play12:55

shy I was very reserved I never stepped

play12:58

up to the plate when I needed to and

play12:59

that all changed once I went through RTC

play13:02

and my thought process was changed

play13:04

because of that program so I really owe

play13:08

it all to RTC for allowing me to get

play13:10

where I'm at today and obviously VSU

play13:13

provides a great Air Force ROTC program

play13:15

for those looking to get into it now

play13:17

throughout this time because I left RTC

play13:20

my business was doing very very well

play13:23

ad workout we had successful launches

play13:26

and this is where also I launched

play13:28

another project of mine in which I was

play13:31

working on for over a year and I was

play13:33

called the double dip bars and we

play13:35

launched on Kickstarter

play13:37

we had a great great run we hit our goal

play13:39

within three days and it grossed over a

play13:42

hundred thousand dollars within the

play13:44

first few months so pretty much

play13:46

throughout this time I kept my eye on

play13:48

the prize which was graduation and I

play13:51

just kept driving and kept pushing and

play13:52

kept going well within my classes I was

play13:55

maintaining my fitness of course and I

play13:57

was doing still well with my youtube

play13:59

channel I reached half a million

play14:01

subscribers by this time and I was just

play14:04

excited of where I was at in my life and

play14:08

I was honestly so eager to just kind of

play14:12

transport to the future and start living

play14:14

the life without school and I kind of

play14:18

caught a bit of senioritis because I've

play14:20

been in school so long now I just ready

play14:22

to graduate ready to leave but I know

play14:25

that you got to finish how strong and

play14:27

that's exactly what I did after four

play14:30

long years I can finally say that I've

play14:32

graduated with a bachelor's degree in

play14:33

business management with a minor in

play14:35

entrepreneurship

play14:36

so I may look at it as a piece of paper

play14:39

but I see it as a representation of my

play14:41

evolution from a clueless teenager not

play14:44

knowing what they wanted to do with

play14:45

their life to now and educate a young

play14:47

adult ready to live out their passion

play14:49

and motivate others in the process I can

play14:52

wholeheartedly say that without this

play14:53

experience I wouldn't be where I'm at

play14:55

today the relationships I built the

play14:57

information I've learned the challenges

play14:59

I faced have all been necessary for my

play15:01

growth in conclusion I want to thank

play15:04

everyone who has been a supportive and

play15:05

positive role model for me these past

play15:07

four years I wish you success on

play15:10

wherever likely take you lastly most of

play15:12

all I want to think about also State

play15:14

University for unknowingly piven my way

play15:16

to success thank you for changing my

play15:19

life
