Transcripts
so you want to build a YouTube channel
for yourself as a DJ and you want to
upload a mix to YouTube how do you do it
let's chat through the planning and all
the steps to getting that new mix live
let's go yes yes shed heads I'm growing
farmer founder of dance music Authority
data transmission and today we're going
to continue our chat about YouTube for
DJs in these steps today we're going to
get your first mix out there make sure
you stick around right to the end
because you want to make sure you do all
the steps to crack this strategy if you
missed my video on why you should be
using YouTube in the first place as a DJ
check this one out and if you want to
grow your following from zero to a th000
followers then you need to watch this
video as part of this series you could
definitely go and binge watch the other
two afterwards so you decided to make a
YouTube channel after watching that
video you decided the vibe of the
channel and what your channel is going
be about and now you're focused on
making mixes for your brand new channel
let's talk about the first mix on your
channel what's the vibe of that mix
going to be does your channel have an
overall genre I house music and is your
channel going to be then a mix of sub
genres within the house music genre like
our friends over at flavor trip check
out their channel it's wicked or is your
channel me where you walking around the
streets and DJing and the funny things
that happen to you while that's
happening like our friend suat check his
channel out it's wicked his channel is
actually a mix of Recaps and live mixes
so good or is it going to be like a tech
house only Channel we play the music
you're into that week that month like
when we broke down rewi Channel if you
didn't see that check this video out
when you're planning your DJ mixes
getting these steps right is going to
help your channel grow in the long term
it will give it a better chance to grow
and it'll keep people locked in for
longer you can also plan a few videos in
advance and work on a schedule which
will actually make things easier for you
if you go down the route like Flavor
trip and you know the sounds for each of
the coming up mixes then as you're kind
of searching for music and you find
stuff that might fit a future mix you
can put it into folders and kind of
doing the research for lots of mixes in
a row as you're hunting for music now
you know the vibe of the mix now the
main thing is to get the title locked in
what's that video going to be called the
big thing to remember when it comes to
YouTube is it's a search engine and it's
all about SEO it's also the second
biggest search engine behind Google and
Google owns both of them so unlike other
social media you need to consider search
engine optimization or SEO to grow your
channel you need to make sure your
videos are discoverable which means once
you've worked at the Channel's theme and
identity then planning out each mix is
going to be the key thing when it comes
to a title you need to put something
that people are searching for no one is
searching for my new mix01 maybe we all
should do a bit of search on my new
mix01 I bet there's some absolute bels
in there so let's look at some examples
flavor trip for instance they jam-pack
their title with keywords for example
chill Lounge house music mix SL
afterwork poolside barbecue or funky
disco house music mix slash Seaside
Sunset picnic or dance house music mix
gym workout motivation energy so anyone
for searching for those words or a mix
of those words their videos will come up
which means you've got a higher chance
of your video being found by people
searching for something in those spaces
where they're looking for music for
instance the last one if you're looking
to go to the gym you might search up a
mix to go with whereas suat goes for
more Intrigue into his titles how I
outsmarted the police in front of the
queen or mad mobile DJ escaped security
less searchable but you're going to want
to watch it because you're going it's
the Intrigue is there and when YouTube
puts it in front of people that like DJ
videos generally you'll go that sounds
like fun I want to see what happens how
you increase your click-through rate is
having a good title and thumbnail and
the combination of both the big part of
the discoverability of a video is the
thumbnail massive Creator Mr Beast says
we probably spend 5 to 10,000 on a
thumbnail just make sure you got the
right image and it's good because like
the thumbnail it makes a difference
between 50 million views and 200 million
views now you don't need to spend that
much on a thumbnail when you're just
starting out but you're going to get the
idea it's important to have a good
thumbnail and people spend a lot of time
and research finding the best thumbnails
I would definitely do some research on
your competitors and see what they're
using for thumbnails and what's getting
clicked through and also just scroll
yourself and see if you would click on
things you'll see if you go through su's
channel for instance he's changed up his
thumbnails over the journey so that
they're even more striking as it goes on
Flavor trip use a big photo of where
they're playing because they using these
amazing backdrops and you want to click
through because you want to see that
video rewire does a weekly live stream
so his titles and thumbnails are based
on house and Tech house and the day and
title of the event he's driving his
audience from other channels which is
then pushing people to watch his live
streams and that will Kickstart the
algorithm to get more people watching
out over time and then from those people
watching YouTube will do some of the
heavy lifting to find more people that
have already tuned in next thing is
planning the framing of your video how's
it going to look on screen remember this
is a video performance and how it looks
on screen is important it doesn't need
to be super polished at the start but
considering the visual part of this mix
is key if you're in a studio can you
make it look clean can you declutter
we've definitely done that in here if
you go back some of my videos You'll see
we've changed how it looks inside the
shed along the way if you're just at
home which is totally cool after coid
just remove some of the Clutter and
tighten it all up can you get some nice
Lighting on the space either from
recording during the day and moving the
set so you get natural lighting or can
you invest in some cheap lights these
ones these were only1 15 the ones in
down there to just bring some light to
it again we've evolved our background
lighting cameras over time I remember
posting a video a while back we had just
a cheap1 background and someone
commented that they didn't like it you
always get those comments and just let
them roll off because as long as people
can see and hear you but just keep
evolving over time for our friends over
at flavor trip they obviously pick
striking backgrounds and locations and
they obviously plan where their next
trip's going to be to the next thing
about planning the layout is can you cut
yourself out for short form content try
not to have too much clutter on the
screen either you'll see sometimes
people doing live streams and they've
got borders and everything around but
sometimes it's just easy to have you
dejing it's very easy to add extras on
screen but just don't do it and just
keep it simple and make it look cool on
screen and again can you be seen and
heard and the big thing I've learned
from making videos over the time is as
long as you can actually be heard then
the rest will come along so can you chop
out content from the middle of you as I
mentioned in this video from one YouTube
video you can get actually over 100
pieces of content if you design it right
Next Up Plan the mix what tracks are you
going to include think about how the
video is going to be searched if it's
packed with all your own music and
people aren't searching for you in the
first place then they might not find
your video so it might be a case of
mixing some of your own music in with
some other artist's music which people
are searching for if you're going down
the rewire option then it maybe it's a
working the track list out from promos
that have happened that week or that
week's releases but planning the mix out
and working out the transitions maybe
between each mix so that you've really
got it now before you go into the full
mix then you also have confidence when
you're doing that Final Mix now it's
time to mix have fun definitely once
that's done it's about finishing it and
preparing it for the upload this is
going to be including things like the
description of the video you can have up
to 5,000 characters in that description
so there's plenty of space to pack it
with searchable keywords IE track lists
other people search tracks will be
searchable in that to search bar and
they might be searching for a track and
then find your mix the final part is the
planning the launch date when is it
going to go live and the kind of go go
go part you need to build up to that
release date so you can plan your social
media content asally so that you kind of
plan it like an actual event do you want
to start on YouTube I've made a handy
guide to help you do that it's a
downloadable ebook I've put it pinned in
the comments and also in the
descriptions go and grab it now do you
want to get your first thousand
followers on YouTube as a DJ then you
need to go and watch this video next we
break down how to go from zero to a th
if you've enjoyed this video please give
it a like subscribe to the channel we
now have two videos a week and two live
streams every week which are demo
feedback sessions so don't miss out I'll
see you over in this video I'll see you
over there Cheerio bye-bye
