15:05

🚦 Glide Cars

Transcripts

play00:00

this afternoon we're diving into the

play00:02

growing presence of autonomous cars here

play00:04

in the Bay Area and the use of them as

play00:06

Robo taxis several companies are out on

play00:09

the streets right now touting the

play00:11

convenience of this technology but what

play00:13

about the glitches and concerns about

play00:15

safety our Kenny Choy starts our

play00:17

conversation in San Francisco where

play00:19

there's one spot that wayo cars seem to

play00:22

have tough time navigating

play00:30

Rosemary desna has lived in San

play00:32

Francisco's Telegraph neighborhood for

play00:34

decades we have a main thorough fair and

play00:37

a lot of small streets that feed into it

play00:39

with a lot of weird directionals

play00:41

five-way streets and that kind of stuff

play00:43

she chooses to walk when she can and is

play00:45

acutely aware of her surroundings lately

play00:47

with more Robo taxis passing by I've

play00:50

just noticed a lot of um car you know

play00:53

driverless cars getting stuck the way

play00:57

Brian Culbertson who was visiting qu

play00:59

Tower nearby recorded and posted on X

play01:01

this video of a wh getting stuck at the

play01:03

turnaround on Greenwich Street he

play01:05

declined to be interviewed on camera

play01:07

residents know the tight turn at the

play01:09

dead end can present some issues this

play01:11

turnaround is hard for everybody uh

play01:13

because they don't know that it's a

play01:15

turnaround ahed BFA is a professor of

play01:18

engineering at San Jose State people are

play01:20

using them and and that's why I hear

play01:23

about more problem because you discover

play01:24

new scenarios that didn't never thought

play01:26

about it BFA believes each hiccup is a

play01:28

chance foro to prove its product and

play01:31

acknowledge imperfections along the way

play01:33

the company should be upfront about it

play01:35

and fix it and say we know what's wrong

play01:37

with this this this scenario we we fixed

play01:40

it it's not going to happen again please

play01:42

close thead despite the latest bump in

play01:44

the road BFA believes

play01:46

s915 a bill that would give local

play01:48

governments authority over where Robo

play01:50

taxis can be deployed would create a

play01:52

nightmare where an autonomous vehicle

play01:54

would be allowed in one city and then

play01:56

stopped at the boorder of the next city

play01:58

that might not allow AVS

play02:00

residents like Eileen iari have

play02:02

witnessed stranded Whos too I have seen

play02:05

whmo cars up come in and go at too sharp

play02:09

of an angle and then stop and not know

play02:12

what to do but she also sees the upside

play02:14

of driverless taxis like for her

play02:16

daughter-in-law who takes Late Night

play02:18

Trips as a nurse I didn't have to deal

play02:20

with a driver that I didn't know getting

play02:23

in a foreign car I just got in told said

play02:27

where I was going and it took me there

play02:30

very smoothly this pedestrian crossing a

play02:33

street in North Beach shook her head in

play02:35

disbelief as the wayo rightfully stopped

play02:37

and turned after the path cleared my

play02:41

motiv uper on day is to uh wait for

play02:44

those cars to pass in traffic before I

play02:47

make my moves Crossing as a pedestrian

play02:50

some are very comfortable with the white

play02:51

Robo taxis expanding across the bay area

play02:54

Rosemary desna is cautious now weo did

play02:58

not respond to our specific questions

play03:00

about the stranded cars as for that

play03:02

state bill that would let local

play03:04

governments weigh in on Robo taxi

play03:06

operations on their streets it has

play03:08

passed the senate floor and will be

play03:10

taken up by the assembly weo is also

play03:13

under a federal scrutiny the national

play03:15

highway traffic safety administration

play03:17

launched a probe earlier this month

play03:20

citing 22 incidents where weo cars got

play03:23

into an accident or violated traffic

play03:25

laws and last Thursday the agency said

play03:27

it learned of nine more cases in

play03:29

including one in San Francisco where a

play03:31

wh Mo drove the wrong way on a one-way

play03:33

Street the office said it's not aware of

play03:36

any injuries in any of these cases weo

play03:38

says it will continue to work with the

play03:40

federal agency it said in a statement

play03:43

they currently serve over 50,000 weekly

play03:45

trips in some of the most complex

play03:47

environments and they are proud of their

play03:49

performance and safety record they added

play03:51

they are committed to transparency when

play03:54

it comes to

play03:55

safety and the national highway safety

play03:57

administration has also launched a probe

play03:59

in Amazon Robo taxi company zuk two of

play04:03

those Vehicles were rear-ended after

play04:05

suddenly breaking in

play04:07

traffic and the agency is also looking

play04:09

into Cruz which had its permits to

play04:11

operate in California pulled State

play04:14

Regulators said Cruz misled them about

play04:16

an accident where the car hit and

play04:18

dragged a woman who was thrown into its

play04:21

path by another

play04:22

car Sil ahead we talked live with the

play04:25

Bay Area professor of transportation and

play04:27

Innovation about the benefits and the

play04:29

drop backs of these Robo taxis plus weo

play04:32

planning to expand South in the Bay Area

play04:35

why some lawmakers are pushing to pump

play04:38

the

play04:40

[Music]

play04:45

brakes this half hour We're exploring

play04:47

the growing presence of driverless cars

play04:49

here in the Bay Area and for the past

play04:51

few months people have been calling

play04:53

rides from Google's autonomous car

play04:55

company weo here in San Francisco

play04:57

through the app now the company plans to

play04:59

test rides on the peninsula at first

play05:02

only weo employees could ride as far

play05:04

south as San Mato with plans to expand

play05:06

to Sunnyville but the company is running

play05:08

into a little resistance as our Kenny

play05:11

Choy reports some critics say the

play05:13

expansion is Just Happening too

play05:21

fast when a driverless car struts by and

play05:25

catches eyes people stop and stare

play05:31

Rick galano has noticed too he's always

play05:33

looking for the next best mode of

play05:35

transportation whatever makes it easier

play05:38

is critical when that commute is every

play05:40

day I work two job I'm able to rest in

play05:43

between riding the bus he rides the bus

play05:46

uses an e scooter and a ride hailing

play05:48

service if the weather gets nasty lately

play05:50

the San Francisco native has been using

play05:52

weo occasionally for more reasons than

play05:55

just one I don't have to deal with

play05:56

drivers that are that have bad attitude

play05:59

cuz it's driver you know with weo

play06:01

expanding to the peninsula for the first

play06:03

time Rick believes it could become part

play06:04

of his regular commute to San Bruno if

play06:07

the ride Fair makes economic

play06:09

sense I jumped into one to take it for a

play06:12

ride hello from weo and see what the

play06:16

hype is all about a few minutes in by

play06:19

chance on our way to the destination I

play06:21

punched in we approached a construction

play06:23

zone he's giving the slow sign it slowed

play06:25

down navigated the cones and came out

play06:27

the other end without a hitch Ahmed BFA

play06:30

is a professor of engineering at San

play06:32

Jose State the future is driverless all

play06:35

of us knows that it's a matter of when

play06:37

and also a matter of who who will gain

play06:40

dominance in a driverless world it's a

play06:43

very tight robe that they are walking

play06:45

gain the trust gain the the market share

play06:48

before Tesla comes into play before crws

play06:50

come back thanks but it's not full

play06:53

throttle forward for weo just yet as

play06:55

lawmakers unions and First Responders

play06:57

have been critical questioning it safety

play07:00

among other concerns Sano County

play07:02

Supervisor David canipa opposes wh's

play07:04

expansion he wants more data and

play07:06

transparency related to any safety

play07:09

issues near crashes and more we need to

play07:12

put guard rails and that means wh Mo has

play07:15

to communicate uh with police Chiefs

play07:18

Fire Chiefs um they have to communicate

play07:21

with Department of Public Works once

play07:23

once you gain this trust and people are

play07:25

used to it and not afraid of seeing it

play07:27

on their you know on their roads on

play07:29

their streets then it's going to the the

play07:31

human driver will disappear in that case

play07:33

it's going to be really an autonomous

play07:36

driverless cars that's part of the

play07:38

conundrum for Rick galano what could

play07:41

make his commute easier and cheaper one

play07:43

day could come at a cost I can see like

play07:46

Uber drivers and lift drivers losing

play07:47

their jobs because you have automated

play07:49

cars that are moving out there just like

play07:52

that the driver is out of

play07:54

sight when we asked the company for a

play07:57

timeline to all this weo didn't give us

play07:59

answer but simply said that the

play08:01

expansion will take some time the

play08:03

company told us they will work closely

play08:05

with cities and First Responders to

play08:07

ensure that they are offering rides that

play08:09

are safe and

play08:11

accessible and still ahead a plan to use

play08:14

Robo taxis as Transit the major project

play08:17

in the works in contracosta

play08:19

county and we are counting down to the

play08:22

Oakland Ballers first home game at rayi

play08:24

Park it's Tuesday June 4th and remember

play08:28

you can catch the Ballers on Friday

play08:29

nights on pix plus 44 cable 12 the first

play08:32

televised game is a week from Friday

play08:34

June 7th at

play08:41

6:30 well this half half hour we're

play08:43

talking Robo taxis and safety joining me

play08:46

now is Billy rigs a professor of

play08:47

transportation and Innovation at the

play08:49

University of San Francisco thanks so

play08:51

much for being here yeah thanks for

play08:52

having me all right let's get to it is

play08:54

there really anything stopping weo I

play08:57

mean money public acceptance is it full

play09:00

steam ahead I think it's full Full Speed

play09:02

Ahead for for wh Mo I mean I think

play09:04

they're they're well capitalized they've

play09:06

got great technology and um I think

play09:09

there's a lot of opportunity for them to

play09:11

really prove that you know Automation

play09:13

and safe driving has a future not only

play09:16

in San Francisco but Way Beyond now is

play09:18

it essentially in in the terms of the

play09:20

race to who's going to end up on top of

play09:22

all this it's really wayos to lose right

play09:24

Cruz is out zuk's and which is

play09:26

essentially Amazon is slow going same as

play09:30

same with Tesla you know does weo

play09:32

they're kind of at the top right now

play09:34

right well I think wh Mo's done a really

play09:37

good job of I think uh winning over a

play09:40

public opinion and um you know weo has

play09:43

been at this a long time longer than any

play09:45

other company uh backed originally by

play09:47

Google uh alphabet and spun off so

play09:50

they've got the history but you know I

play09:52

think I think we can't count out Cruz I

play09:54

think Cruz has great technology um they

play09:56

still have over a billion dollars in

play09:58

cash so you know I think but really we

play10:00

Mo has an edge now because of their

play10:03

ability to charge for rides and um you

play10:06

know we estimate there're still you know

play10:08

10 million rides um 10 million miles

play10:10

done and probably adding on about

play10:13

150,000 miles daily so that that that

play10:17

driver is getting better and better and

play10:19

better and if you're not out on the

play10:20

roads driving um your algorithm isn't

play10:23

improving and you know so that's I think

play10:25

that's a huge Advantage for them yeah

play10:27

they have to be on the streets to really

play10:29

perfect it right let's talk about public

play10:30

perception a little bit I mean we know

play10:32

the data is there that these driverless

play10:34

cars are in fact safer than the ride

play10:37

sharing companies like uber but yet

play10:40

people are still really nervous about

play10:42

this they don't trust these driverless

play10:44

cars do you think that's going to change

play10:46

yeah you know it's funny I I was

play10:48

thinking about this quite a bit while

play10:50

coming in here today and I think there's

play10:53

there's the media depiction and there's

play10:55

the reality of public acceptance I think

play10:58

there's what we have here is there's

play11:00

there's a lot of um media that that gets

play11:03

churned up when we have instances and

play11:06

you know whamos had about 22 reportable

play11:09

instances and when we think about 22

play11:10

instances over 10 million miles it's

play11:12

actually far fewer than than we have

play11:15

from from our public transit agencies

play11:17

from Human drivers throughout our cities

play11:19

and it's interesting that we have such a

play11:22

reaction and I think it's just the

play11:23

novelty I I think when we consider that

play11:26

every day in San Francisco in many

play11:28

cities around the country there are

play11:29

millions of trips and there's literally

play11:30

1.1 million trips in San Francisco every

play11:33

day 50,000 of them are done by weo a

play11:37

week so okay so it's less than 1% of of

play11:42

our of our travel on our roads right now

play11:44

so I think the bigger question we should

play11:46

be asking from a safety standpoint is

play11:48

public perception is hit and miss based

play11:51

on whether or not you have you've

play11:54

written in the vehicles what your what

play11:55

your perspective on and your

play11:57

interpretation of their driving but the

play11:59

fact is they are performing perhaps

play12:01

better than than you and I and I I I

play12:04

like to ask forgiveness for my driving

play12:05

many times because but I do you know

play12:08

having ridden in the cars having studied

play12:10

them I know that there are many times

play12:12

that I shouldn't behind the be behind

play12:13

the wheel and there are many times I

play12:15

don't want to be behind the wheel and I

play12:16

think that's a when we think about the

play12:18

evolution of this technology the bigger

play12:21

question we might be asking is how do we

play12:23

how can we get a lot of the unsafe

play12:25

driving behavior that is that is

play12:26

happening by humans that don't learn the

play12:28

lessons in difficult situations how do

play12:30

we get that off the roadways and I think

play12:32

some city is going to be really radical

play12:34

and say hey certain portions of our city

play12:37

maybe need to be autonomous only and I

play12:39

don't know that's going to be San

play12:40

Francisco but um you know it very well

play12:43

could be a city like Oslo which is like

play12:45

really wants this technology to come to

play12:47

it basically yesterday yeah you know I

play12:50

want to step back and talk about

play12:51

autonomous vehicles on a whole I mean

play12:53

Mercedes-Benz was the first to come out

play12:54

with this level three autonomous car

play12:56

which essentially means the driver can

play12:58

sit there not touch the gas pedal not

play13:01

look at the road play their video games

play13:03

enjoy the scenery do you think that

play13:05

autonomous personal vehicles are going

play13:08

to be take off faster than these Robo

play13:10

taxis well we should do a little PSA

play13:12

right now on a level three vehicle you

play13:14

should not be playing video games um and

play13:17

and in your Tesla self-driving vehicle I

play13:19

think that you know that you're legally

play13:21

required to be the the pilot in command

play13:23

in that V that vehicle so um do I think

play13:27

level three technology is evolved enough

play13:30

to where uh we can we'll see it kind of

play13:33

dominate the private vehicle Market I

play13:35

think the simple answer is no um the the

play13:38

technology there can only Advance as far

play13:41

as the hardware on the vehicles and the

play13:43

differentiating factor for Cru wh Mo

play13:45

zooks um the leading companies in this

play13:47

area is that the hardware on the vehicle

play13:49

is really sophisticated in being able to

play13:53

anticipate um errors on the road but

play13:56

also being able to judge things that

play13:58

right now we can't do with just cameras

play14:00

and particularly one of those things the

play14:02

liar on many of these vehicles is able

play14:04

to judge speed in in space and velocity

play14:07

of things around it and make path

play14:10

planning decisions in a much more

play14:11

sophisticated way so I think for freeway

play14:14

driving yeah that's a great asset for

play14:16

for for Mercedes um will it translate to

play14:19

vehicle sales I don't know it's also

play14:22

expensive but I think you know we should

play14:24

do everything we can to encourage driver

play14:27

safety I'm so happy to see all the the

play14:29

passenger safety driver safety things

play14:31

coming up in Teslas in BMW in Mercedes

play14:35

across the board that's a that's a

play14:36

that's a win for society will it

play14:39

supplant the sophistication of level

play14:41

four vehicles we see on Streets of San

play14:43

Francisco I don't think so just because

play14:45

of the expense of the hardware needed to

play14:48

do that level four operation yeah

play14:50

interesting see we where we are in five

play14:52

years really fascinating Billy thanks so

play14:54

much for it is really a pleasure thank

play14:56

you well we've seen self-driving cars

play14:58

and on in action on city streets but now

play15:00

there's also a plan to bring them to the

play15:02

stretch of the suburbs in Katra Casta

play15:04

County there's new Transit experiment

play15:07

it's a network of Robo taxis called

play15:10

Glide cars they are autonomous rolling

play15:12

pods that can fit four people in a pot

play15:16

eventually the plan is to run them on a

play15:18

28m long enclosed roadway stretching

play15:22

from Brentwood through Oakley and

play15:23

Antioch and then ending in Pittsburgh

play15:26

they plan to have 56 pickup points and

play15:29

Riders would summon individual cars

play15:30

using an app and because the cars are

play15:33

only about 5 ft wide the travel route

play15:35

can run alongside Trails railroad tracks

play15:38

and streets without removing any

play15:40

existing Lanes the routes are designed

play15:43

to get people to and from major points

play15:45

of interest like downtown areas

play15:46

commercial centers and other transit

play15:49

systems we'll be right

play15:52

back well thank you so much for joining

play15:54

us for today's conversation on

play15:56

driverless car safety we'd love to hear

play15:58
