play00:00

hey everyone welcome to the Dr Josh ax

play00:02

show I am your host Dr Josh ax and each

play00:05

and every week I cover the science and

play00:07

principles and how to grow in Body Mind

play00:09

spirit and take your health and your

play00:10

life to the next level on today's

play00:13

episode I have Dr Casey means she's a

play00:16

Stanford trained physician the chief

play00:18

medical officer and co-founder of the

play00:21

metabolic Health company levels which I

play00:23

have use their continuous blood glucose

play00:25

monitor and absolutely love it and

play00:27

recommended it to many patients and

play00:29

clients over the years

play00:30

and um we're going to dive into a lot of

play00:32

things today we're going to cover why

play00:35

Health Care spending is

play00:37

increasing and I'm going to ask you the

play00:40

question why are we getting sicker today

play00:41

when you look at the numbers of people

play00:44

getting metabolic conditions it

play00:46

continues to increase even though we're

play00:48

spending more and more money also we'll

play00:51

get into different emotions like fear

play00:54

and how that affects metabolic health

play00:55

and we're going to get into all the

play00:56

blood work blood testing and talk about

play00:59

something called good energy which is

play01:02

mitochondrial Health there's something

play01:03

called mitochondria which is like the

play01:05

engine for your cells if you keep that

play01:07

healthy you're going to have good energy

play01:09

if not you won't so we'll get into all

play01:10

that and more Dr Casey welcome to show

play01:13

so happy to be here thank you for having

play01:15

me well I know um you know I've read

play01:18

this about you and I know that I I hear

play01:20

this often is that often times people

play01:22

like yourself you get a traditional

play01:24

medical uh traditional medical training

play01:28

and you don't end up doing conventional

play01:32

medicine and all of the thing the things

play01:34

that you were trained in school and so

play01:36

for yourself you've taken a very

play01:38

different career path rather than

play01:39

prescribing medications you've really

play01:42

focused on using natural ways to help

play01:44

people heal what what caused you to sort

play01:47

of switch gears and go from one career

play01:49

path and more conventional to one that's

play01:51

much more natural yeah so for me Josh it

play01:55

was it was really that I was 9 years

play01:57

into my training you know four years of

play01:59

medical

play02:00

school close to being done with 5 years

play02:02

of surgical training and I was train I

play02:05

trained as a head of neck surgeon and I

play02:07

kind of was looking around me and

play02:09

looking at the realities of what's going

play02:10

on in the western Healthcare System and

play02:12

the reality is the patients in America

play02:14

they're getting sicker every year like

play02:15

we're not we're not getting better as a

play02:17

country in terms of health even though

play02:18

we're spending Monumental resources on

play02:20

health and then kind of going deeper

play02:23

than that realizing you know every

play02:25

single institution in America that

play02:27

touches our health from hospitals to

play02:31

clinics to pharmaceutical companies

play02:34

medical schools even insurance companies

play02:36

they all make more money when we are

play02:39

sick and that's a huge problem and I was

play02:41

a doctor working in a system in which

play02:44

the business model for the business you

play02:46

know people sometimes think healthcare

play02:48

is like a philanthropic organization or

play02:50

a nonprofit it's not it's a business and

play02:53

that bu that business is designed to

play02:54

grow and as a doctor you're a worker in

play02:57

that system and the C the the incentives

play02:59

are totally misaligned right now and so

play03:03

even though I and my colleagues all go

play03:06

into this profession with the noblest of

play03:08

intentions to help people this is a

play03:11

massive $4 trillion do system that makes

play03:14

more money when we're sick and that's a

play03:15

huge problem and I left the system to go

play03:17

figure out ways to um really keep people

play03:20

healthy um through through different

play03:22

means um and I think what every patient

play03:24

unfortunately needs to understand is

play03:26

that no matter no matter how wonderful

play03:28

your doctor is the way we're trained the

play03:30

way the research is done on every level

play03:32

this Invisible Hand of gigantic

play03:34

Financial incentives is corrupting the

play03:36

way we think about the body it's

play03:37

corrupting the way we think about

play03:39

disease it's making us not look at root

play03:41

causes and connections between diseases

play03:43

and put on these very siloed goggles

play03:46

about the body and about disease that is

play03:48

not serving patients truly getting

play03:51

healthier so that is why I made that

play03:53

sharp right turn to really focusing on

play03:55

the it's a major issue you know many

play03:57

people have heard this but the United

play03:59

States and New Zealand are the only two

play04:01

countries that can Market medicine the

play04:03

way that we do today via all of these

play04:05

commercials and also the financial in in

play04:08

interests and government officials

play04:09

there's lots and lots of issues here in

play04:11

fact you know when I look at all of

play04:12

those different sort of big uh you know

play04:16

Industries today I really think the

play04:19

pharmaceutical industry today is the

play04:21

most corrupt of all of them and it's

play04:23

it's it's the and even more so than

play04:25

government even more so than the food

play04:27

and agricultural industry I think it's

play04:29

the most correct

play04:30

and I think it should be and and the

play04:31

reason why is it's so far from what it

play04:34

really should be I mean really medicine

play04:36

should all be about just helping sick

play04:38

people heal get to the root cause of

play04:40

their issue and getting well and it

play04:42

doesn't do that at all in fact the crazy

play04:44

part is you take one medication

play04:46

typically causes another disease so then

play04:47

you have to take another so it really

play04:49

actually perpetuates the cycle making

play04:51

people worse and everybody breaks the

play04:53

Hippocratic Oath uh most MDS especially

play04:56

first Do no harm because anytime you

play04:58

prescribe a medication another another

play05:00

one you're actually doing more harm than

play05:01

if you would have typically recommended

play05:03

a diet or supplement or lifestyle change

play05:05

and so it's obviously a massive massive

play05:08

issue and and why why do you think today

play05:12

because one of the things that I've

play05:13

heard people say before is well you know

play05:16

what it's a lot of good people like

play05:17

doctors are good people they're just in

play05:20

bad health care now I personally don't

play05:22

even think that's an excuse though I I

play05:24

think that there is a lack of virtue and

play05:26

integrity because there are people like

play05:28

yourself or Dr Mark Hyman or you know

play05:32

people that were more medically trained

play05:34

as MDS who were able to see through it

play05:36

and say well you know what I'm going to

play05:37

do the right thing and help people

play05:40

because I can see this isn't doing it

play05:41

for people what what what are your

play05:43

thoughts about that I think what's so

play05:45

interesting is that when we get caught

play05:47

up in this Matrix you know you invest so

play05:49

much into becoming a doctor you know

play05:51

hundreds of thousands of dollars years

play05:53

of the healthiest years of your life and

play05:56

and with such good intentions and I

play05:58

think it's very difficult sometimes to

play06:00

see this wild Matrix of multiple

play06:04

industries that you are actually

play06:06

embedded in and so you don't even

play06:08

actually see I think where some of the

play06:10

toxicity and some of the compromised

play06:12

interests come in you've got this

play06:13

Devil's bargain you know between a$6

play06:16

trillion doll food industry and the4

play06:19

trillion doll Healthcare System and you

play06:21

know a multi- trillion dollar industrial

play06:24

agriculture system which all together

play06:27

basically shaped the way like what our

play06:28

cultural norms are you've also got the

play06:30

school system you've got all these

play06:32

things that are kind of working together

play06:33

to create Norms in our culture um that

play06:36

that make it very difficult to see your

play06:39

place in it I think and when you've

play06:41

invested that much time there are such

play06:44

strong cultural norms you don't even

play06:45

have the government or Healthcare

play06:46

organizations coming out and talking

play06:48

about you know root cause approaches to

play06:51

health I think it's very easy to just

play06:52

get lost in all of it and to believe so

play06:55

strongly in this you know in this golden

play06:58

tower that you've really like hits Your

play07:00

Wagon to for your life so so actually

play07:03

stepping out it's not just about saying

play07:05

like I don't really believe I think

play07:07

there could be a better way it's

play07:08

actually like turning your back on you

play07:10

know 10 years of your life hundreds of

play07:12

thousands of dollars you know and also

play07:15

kind of giving a bit Big M middle finger

play07:17

to some of the some of the biggest

play07:19

industries in our country that we feel

play07:20

like we should trust because if we don't

play07:23

then your world kind of starts to

play07:25

crumble and so it's it's kind of bigger

play07:27

than just saying I'm going to take a

play07:29

different career path it's actually

play07:30

saying like I going to walk on my own on

play07:33

a path that is different from what 99%

play07:36

of people are saying and I think that

play07:38

what you speak of though is very

play07:39

important I think there is

play07:42

unfortunately such fear in people kind

play07:45

of going out and and forging their own

play07:47

path um and I feel very lucky because I

play07:49

had a family that supported that and I

play07:51

had friends that supported that um you

play07:54

know I have a lot of privilege in terms

play07:55

of you know even having a family that

play07:57

would support me if I you know kind of

play07:59

on my my face and so I think there's a

play08:01

lot of things that push people to stay

play08:03

in the lane but at this point

play08:06

there's there's a couple things I would

play08:07

say to that one is that there actually

play08:09

is a lot of community on the other side

play08:12

of what's going on in conventional the

play08:14

Norms like the functional medicine

play08:15

Community as you know and sort of like

play08:18

gr it's strong and it's incredible and I

play08:21

think the second thing is from a

play08:24

spiritual perspective I think like

play08:26

really following that call of of digging

play08:28

deeper and following what you know you

play08:30

kind of what you're inkling noses right

play08:32

you look at the system and it's failing

play08:33

the system's abjectly failing $4

play08:35

trillion do and patients are getting

play08:36

sicker every year there's something

play08:37

wrong there and I think if you don't

play08:39

scratch that itch and start to go deeper

play08:42

it can be very spiritually depleting

play08:44

because on some level you know that the

play08:46

system you're working in is not working

play08:47

and we see huge rates of depression huge

play08:50

rates of suicide huge rates of burnout

play08:52

in healthcare and I do not think it's

play08:54

because we're working long hours a lot

play08:57

of fields work long hours I think it's

play08:59

because we know there is a mismatch

play09:02

between what we're doing and what would

play09:04

be actually best for people and we just

play09:06

don't know how to fix it but we all have

play09:08

a voice and I think it's really

play09:10

important for people to step up and

play09:11

realize we got to use it doctors are

play09:14

respected in society and it is really

play09:16

our job as individuals to create a

play09:18

movement and the unlocking of I think

play09:23

that spiritual purposeful fulfillment is

play09:26

something that you cannot underestimate

play09:28

like we have such a short life and I

play09:29

think that that one of the reasons we're

play09:31

seeing doctors suffering so much um as a

play09:34

community is because you know they feel

play09:37

trapped in a system that they know is

play09:38

broken and they don't know what to do

play09:40

about it yeah well well to your point

play09:42

one of the good good things is we see

play09:44

functional Integrative Medicine growing

play09:46

you know I remember when I first got

play09:47

into the field you had people like

play09:50

Andrew W and Joe marola and Mark Heyman

play09:53

and Daniel Aon they were some of the

play09:55

only people who were really diving into

play09:57

some of this stuff and now there are so

play09:59

many more I mean there's at least 10

play10:00

times more people in functional medicine

play10:03

or more than that likely than there were

play10:05

10 15 years ago and so we're definitely

play10:07

seeing this wave and and I think I think

play10:09

social media where I think it's negative

play10:11

in most cases I think in this case it's

play10:13

positive because people are able to get

play10:17

more self-educated they can see through

play10:19

the lies more those are being uh

play10:21

revealed and so I think that that's

play10:22

that's a big part of of why we're seeing

play10:25

that big growth in functional medicine

play10:27

and I do think you know that um you know

play10:30

a lot of people in that industry if

play10:31

you're turning your eye to people you

play10:33

you if you were God designed you to be a

play10:36

Healer and somebody who's there to help

play10:37

people heal um and you're not doing that

play10:40

or you're taking advantage of sick

play10:42

people that that is going to sicken your

play10:44

soul and so you know I can see some of

play10:46

the the repercussions of that as you're

play10:48

sharing you know one of the things I

play10:50

think that you know as you mentioned

play10:52

four trillion in spending it's actually

play10:54

that's just within that one industry

play10:56

there are so many industries that are

play10:58

contributing to the sickness of people

play11:01

you know it's like okay you have a

play11:03

company that creates a food like a

play11:04

sugary cereal with food coloring and

play11:07

sugar and then you have a so a food

play11:10

company and then you have a marketing

play11:12

company that's marketing that to kids

play11:13

and then you have the pharmaceutical

play11:15

industry and and health care that's sort

play11:17

of take taking advantage of these sick

play11:21

people made Sick by the food and

play11:22

agriculture industry and all the bad

play11:24

media out there so anyways there's

play11:26

really a lot of industries that have a

play11:28

level of

play11:29

uh you know there there's an evil

play11:31

element to them that are contributing to

play11:33

one of the things that you talk about

play11:34

which I think is so brilliant in your

play11:36

book is bad energy versus good energy

play11:39

and you're not just talking about our

play11:41

own energy which I think is important

play11:43

you're talking about something that can

play11:44

happen at a spiritual level but also

play11:45

something that can happen at a cellular

play11:47

level at the health of our mitochondria

play11:50

but break down for me what you mean by

play11:52

bad energy in your book versus good

play11:55

energy yeah so this builds perfectly on

play11:58

what we've been talking about which is

play11:59

that really the financial incentives of

play12:01

Healthcare Drive it to be this very like

play12:03

siloed reactive system because if you

play12:06

think about the way that our system

play12:09

profits right now is that the more you

play12:11

do to someone for a longer period of

play12:14

time the more money you make so like

play12:16

that is that basically lends straight to

play12:19

okay we want to have a lot of

play12:20

chronically ill patients in the system

play12:22

because chronic illnesses are the type

play12:24

of diseases that you're going to have

play12:25

for years and that need to be managed

play12:28

for years do visits every year and the

play12:31

way we look at chronic disease in our

play12:32

country is it's like okay they're each

play12:34

different high cholesterol is different

play12:36

than high blood pressure is different

play12:37

than heart disease is different than

play12:38

stroke it's different than dementia it's

play12:40

different than arthritis it's different

play12:41

than cancer they're all different so

play12:42

that's a bunch of Specialists we can go

play12:43

see for life and that is super

play12:45

profitable now the the the other side of

play12:49

the way you could look at the body is

play12:51

okay well all those symptoms are

play12:53

different but what's actually happening

play12:55

inside the body invisibly under the hood

play12:57

that's leading to these diseases what's

play12:58

the physiology what is the actual stuff

play13:02

going on inside the cells that are

play13:04

leading to these diseases and if you

play13:06

looked through that lens what you would

play13:08

find is that there's a really core set

play13:12

of not very complicated things going on

play13:15

inside the bodies of most Americans that

play13:16

are actually leading to all of those

play13:18

different diseases and that's what I

play13:20

call bad energy that is essentially a

play13:24

set of you know core cellular physiology

play13:27

that make ourselves not work properly

play13:30

and when when cells aren't functioning

play13:33

properly when they're not powered

play13:34

properly when they have bad energy

play13:36

they're going to express dysfunction and

play13:38

dysfunction in a brain cell could look

play13:40

like dementia and dysfunction in a liver

play13:42

cell could look like fatty Delver

play13:43

disease and dysfunction in an blood

play13:45

vessel cell could look like heart

play13:47

disease and so bad energy is essentially

play13:49

a different way to look at Health

play13:52

through the lens of root causes and when

play13:54

we truly go to the research what is the

play13:57

research showing us about the actual

play14:00

core mechanisms that are leading to

play14:01

disease and the great news is it's not

play14:04

that complicated it is metabolic

play14:06

dysfunction which I call uh bad energy

play14:09

and so I think the core thing for people

play14:11

to understand is that you know just a

play14:14

visual in our system we look at every

play14:17

single one of these different chronic

play14:19

diseases in an individual Silo and we

play14:21

treat them in different specialist

play14:22

office but the reality is the more we

play14:24

have specialized in healthcare we now

play14:25

have over 100 Medical Specialties the

play14:29

sticker we're getting a different way of

play14:31

looking at it is a tree the trunk of the

play14:33

tree is this physiology of bad energy

play14:37

metabolic dysfunction and underpowering

play14:39

of how our cells you know essentially an

play14:42

underpowering of our cells and the

play14:44

branches of that same tree are all these

play14:46

different diseases that we think of as

play14:48

separate but they're actually connected

play14:50

so what we really need to do and I think

play14:51

what the future of Health Care is is

play14:54

actually treating just the trunk of that

play14:56

tree treating the bad energy turning it

play14:58

to good energy which is metabolic health

play15:01

and then what we'll find is that a lot

play15:02

of those different branches that we have

play15:04

conventionally seen as separate will get

play15:07

better I think a key overarching

play15:09

framework for people to understand is

play15:11

that we have trillions of cells in our

play15:13

body 40 trillion cells or more and our

play15:18

life our body is just the constellation

play15:20

of all these cells and every single one

play15:23

needs a a consistent source of power to

play15:27

work properly each of these cells are

play15:29

got little factories Little Machines

play15:30

little cities and they need constant

play15:32

energy to do their jobs and when our

play15:34

cells do their jobs properly and are

play15:37

well-powered we have health and when

play15:40

they don't we have disease and so a a

play15:43

huge focus of what we need to think

play15:44

about individually and collectively is

play15:46

how do we understand how ourselves are

play15:49

power how do we understand if we have

play15:51

good or bad energy what is impacting

play15:54

whether we have good or bad energy in

play15:56

our diet and our lifestyles and the

play15:57

world we're living in and then how do I

play15:59

improve it and so that's really um of

play16:02

all this digging over the years leaving

play16:04

the surgical field and trying to really

play16:06

figure out like what is the root cause

play16:08

of what's ailing Americans why are our

play16:09

kids ourselves our parents all getting

play16:12

sicker every year and the reality is

play16:14

it's it's a it's this issue this core

play16:16

fundamental issue in how our environment

play16:18

is hurting our cell's ability to make

play16:21

energy to power themselves and we're

play16:23

basically it's we're broken machines and

play16:24

they we underpowered and it's showing up

play16:26

as all these chronic diseases that we're

play16:28

that we're seeing today

play16:30

well you know what this is a really

play16:31

powerful concept and by the way I I've

play16:33

you read a lot of Health books in my

play16:34

career and discussed a lot of

play16:37

philosophical uh you know ideas around

play16:40

health and a lot of principles and and

play16:41

this is one of the best and the reason

play16:43

why I love what you're sharing is it has

play16:45

really this basis in Western medicine

play16:47

but also Eastern medicine if you look at

play16:49

Chinese medicine you're describing

play16:50

something they would call Chi um to a te

play16:53

essentially uh in that and and so and or

play16:56

or cellular energy ATP you know some of

play16:58

these things we talk about in related

play17:00

relation to mitochondria and Western

play17:01

medicine but this is the driving force

play17:04

for everyone's health and and for

play17:06

everyone listening I want you to think

play17:07

about it like this uh you know it's it's

play17:10

funny we keep listing more and more

play17:11

types of metabolic illness or types of

play17:15

diabetes so we've all heard of type 1

play17:16

diabetes we've all heard of type two

play17:18

diabetes so there's two types well

play17:20

people a few Year many years ago started

play17:22

talking about Alzheimer's and all

play17:24

dementia as type 3 diabetes I read an

play17:28

article recently that called PCOS

play17:30

polycystic ovary syndrome and

play17:32

infertility type four diabetes and then

play17:35

you look at obesity all of those issues

play17:37

I just mentioned plus so many more

play17:40

really are metabolic issues many of them

play17:43

start with a hormone like insulin and

play17:45

when that gets off when your blood

play17:47

glucose gets off it's sort of like a

play17:49

domino effect that's off then all of a

play17:51

sudden your inflammation markers are off

play17:53

your sleep markers are off your estrogen

play17:55

progesterone your testosterone

play17:57

everything else it gets tipped over and

play18:00

so that's what Dr Casey here is really

play18:02

getting into is is that what she's

play18:04

getting into is how to stop that first

play18:07

Domino from following if you can do that

play18:10

or get that one back up right everything

play18:12

else starts to heal in your body if you

play18:14

can get rid of and eliminate the bad

play18:16

energy start getting the good energy

play18:18

start repairing your cellular Health

play18:21

that's ultimately going to lead to you

play18:23

having Better Health one of the

play18:25

questions I have for you what are the

play18:27

biggest thing give me a list of it could

play18:28

be one thing 2 3 four five somewhere

play18:31

between one and five of the top things

play18:33

that feed bad energy and then some of

play18:36

the things the top things that can feed

play18:38

good

play18:39

energy the most important question we

play18:41

could be asking today in the Health Care

play18:43

system is that um

play18:46

so the the the overarching concept that

play18:49

people need to kind of really

play18:50

internalize is that for this cellular

play18:53

power to happen we need the PowerHouse

play18:56

of the cell the mitochondria flashback

play18:58

to high school biology to be optimally

play19:01

working to make energy and the things

play19:05

that are affecting the creation of bad

play19:08

energy are the things in our environment

play19:10

that are basically targeting the

play19:12

mitochondria and making this precious

play19:13

little machine not work properly we have

play19:16

sometimes thousands of these in every

play19:18

one of our cells and they are right now

play19:20

just being hurt so the main things that

play19:22

are hurting our mitochondria are the way

play19:25

we're living over the past 50 to 75

play19:27

years and are rapidly changing modern

play19:29

industrial World across the pillars of

play19:32

ultra processed food our diet has

play19:34

changed radically in the past 50 to 75

play19:37

years our movement patterns we are

play19:40

sitting over 80% of the time of the

play19:43

waking day we're not moving enough uh

play19:46

our stress levels and our emotional

play19:48

health the devices in our hands that are

play19:49

streaming petrifying fear inducing media

play19:52

to our brains and creating a sense of

play19:53

threat in our body uh all the time our

play19:57

sleep patterns have Dr drastically

play19:59

changed over the past 100 years we're

play20:01

sleeping 25% Less on average that's key

play20:04

sleep is key metabolic optimizing time

play20:06

that we're basically just

play20:08

slashing um and then I would say if

play20:10

we're if we're only going to choose five

play20:12

the next one I would probably mention is

play20:15

environmental toxins there's over

play20:16

880,000 synthetic toxins in our food

play20:19

water air personal care products homes

play20:21

cars everywhere that are unregulated for

play20:24

safety largely and which some of which

play20:26

are directly impairing our mitochondrial

play20:28

function so food sleep movement patterns

play20:31

emotional health toxins I'd also

play20:34

probably throw in our our our distorted

play20:37

relationship to light basically since

play20:39

the invention of the light bulb and the

play20:41

fact that we've really thrown a huge

play20:44

rened into our dial circadian Cycles but

play20:48

really with the Advent of modern

play20:51

technology uh you know industrial living

play20:56

very recent just a blip in human history

play20:58

we've changed everything about what our

play21:00

cells are exposed to and the type of

play21:02

information they're getting every day

play21:04

and our chronic disease epidemic is

play21:05

essentially our cells saying we don't

play21:08

know what the heck to do with this

play21:10

changing industrial Western environment

play21:12

and we we can't function properly our

play21:15

mitochondria are literally damaged from

play21:17

every angle and that that is why we're

play21:19

having an explosion in a chronic disease

play21:21

epidemic so how we improve it is

play21:25

essentially going through each of those

play21:27

pillars

play21:29

and thinking from the standpoint of a

play21:31

cellon a mitochondria what does it need

play21:34

to function properly and how do I give

play21:36

it to the cell and the mitochondria

play21:39

without going backwards in time we're

play21:41

not going to go back to an agrarian

play21:42

culture with no light bulbs but how in

play21:45

the modern world do I build an

play21:47

environment of real nutritious

play21:50

highquality Whole Food adequate quality

play21:53

quantity and consistency of sleep

play21:55

non-toxic food water air personal care

play21:59

products really regular movement

play22:01

throughout my days not sitting all day

play22:03

and then just doing a 20-minute exercise

play22:04

but really figuring out how to build

play22:06

movement back into my life and then in

play22:08

terms of emotional health this is the

play22:10

key question how do I create a sense of

play22:13

safety inside my body for my cells even

play22:18

though the world and technology and the

play22:20

TV and the computer all want to make me

play22:22

think this is the most petrifying scary

play22:23

world to live in how do I create a sense

play22:25

of safety in my cells so it's it's it's

play22:28

looking at our culture honestly taking

play22:30

stock of Our Lives honestly and then

play22:32

giving ourselves back what they need to

play22:35

function in the confines of our modern

play22:37

digital knowledge working

play22:39

world yeah wow it's it's great advice

play22:42

and I think one thing for everybody to

play22:44

know is is that uh if your cells are

play22:46

sick you're sick and so if you can start

play22:49

to heal your cell you'll get well I mean

play22:52

really it's the the key to all Health

play22:53

your body is made up of trillions of

play22:55

cells and if you can start to heal your

play22:57

cells you'll get better

play22:59

and again there's a lot of ways to

play23:00

complicate this but the basic truth is

play23:02

this is that if you have good cellular

play23:04

energy you're going to heal you you know

play23:08

a lot of times people think and and I

play23:09

see this a lot Dr Casey with people with

play23:13

certain conditions like if they get

play23:14

overrun with viral infections could be

play23:16

Lyme disease could be mold

play23:18

toxicity uh it could be a number of

play23:20

things somebody with chronic fatigue

play23:21

syndrome often times they're always

play23:23

looking for a pill or a supplement or

play23:26

even a diet to help help them heal and

play23:29

fix them and I think the thing they need

play23:31

to realize it's sort of uh you know that

play23:33

that their batter is too low you know I

play23:35

I use this analogy all the time with my

play23:36

patients is that you know imagine you've

play23:38

got your phone and what's the battery at

play23:40

you know if your batter is at 80 90% you

play23:43

know you it's going to function very

play23:45

well if it's down at 20 30% your body

play23:48

isn't going to function very well so the

play23:50

number one thing you can do hands down

play23:52

period in order to heal yourself because

play23:55

the reason why most people have lime

play23:57

like I I've had patients with Lyme

play23:58

disease they have zero symptoms in fact

play24:01

we I remember years ago I did a blood

play24:02

test myself my mom my dad my brother my

play24:05

sister I all of them do a lime profile

play24:08

all of them or three people in my family

play24:10

had lime but they had zero symptoms at

play24:12

all and it's like well how did they have

play24:14

lime and have zero symptoms and someone

play24:17

else has lime and and they're just an

play24:19

absolute wreck well it's because one

play24:21

group has good cellular energy so their

play24:23

body is able to naturally eliminate lime

play24:26

or keep it at base what never they even

play24:28

have a symptom and another person they

play24:30

don't have good cellular energy so the

play24:32

lime the infection overtakes their body

play24:34

and they have all of these symptoms

play24:36

constantly so so that's really the

play24:37

reality almost every person right now

play24:39

that's suffering with a chronic health

play24:41

condition it's not due to a bad gene or

play24:43

a bad virus or bad luck it's due to poor

play24:48

cellular energy and if you can take your

play24:50

cellular energy up and start to

play24:51

regenerate your cells and heal your

play24:53

cells you'll get well talk to me about

play24:57

diet you know there are so many

play24:59

different diets out there there's

play25:00

carnivore there's Bean there's paleo

play25:02

there's keto what are some of the

play25:04

dietary principles you recommend and I

play25:07

know just for everybody U watching here

play25:10

one of the things Dr Casey has done is

play25:11

invest founded Kell founded a company

play25:14

that's incredible that does continuous

play25:17

blood glucose monitoring so you you you

play25:20

put a patch on your arm and it tells you

play25:22

where your blood sugar is constantly it

play25:25

is incredibly helpful I think it's

play25:26

probably maybe the best single test you

play25:28

could do knowing where your blood sugar

play25:30

is at and seeing what foods affect you

play25:33

um and so really Dr Casey's an expert in

play25:36

this but Dr Casey again what is some of

play25:38

your advice to people when it comes to

play25:42

diet so I'm always looking at diet

play25:45

through very first principles no diet

play25:47

Wars no diet Dogma we have this

play25:50

incredible machine of the body like

play25:52

we've talked about many times 40

play25:53

trillion cells and health is if those

play25:55

cells are working properly so we need to

play25:57

think about food through the lens of how

play25:59

do we give the cells the molecules they

play26:03

need to function properly and be built

play26:05

properly and how do we take out the

play26:08

things from the diet that are

play26:09

overwhelming or hurting or causing

play26:11

damage to our cells and when we look at

play26:13

that very unemotional view of food we

play26:18

can just really start to identify

play26:20

components that we want to have in each

play26:21

meal that would work for a vegan they'd

play26:23

work for a keto person paleo

play26:25

Mediterranean so when I was really

play26:28

looking at the data and trying to figure

play26:29

out what are those key factors the

play26:30

things that came up were we want to have

play26:33

a diet that's rich in M micronutrients

play26:35

and antioxidants we want to have very

play26:38

adequate healthy protein levels we want

play26:41

to have a very good sources of omega-3

play26:43

fatty acids we want to make sure we're

play26:45

getting in probiotic sources and then we

play26:47

want to make sure we're getting in fiber

play26:50

and if we can really focus on

play26:52

understanding which sources of each of

play26:54

those food antioxidants omega-3 fats Pro

play26:57

probiotics Pro protein and fiber our

play26:59

favorite types of foods from each of

play27:02

those categories and then turn creating

play27:04

meals into almost like a mix and match

play27:06

of different components from each of

play27:08

those categories we are going to load

play27:10

the body with a lot of the key building

play27:13

blocks and functional Messengers and

play27:15

molecules that we need to have good

play27:18

energy and to build cellular health and

play27:20

resilience then the things that we

play27:22

really want to eliminate from the diet

play27:25

which do nothing literally nothing

play27:28

positive to support cellular function or

play27:31

structure and that actually are like

play27:34

throwing little bombs on the system and

play27:35

do not help are the refined industrially

play27:38

processed seed oils the refined

play27:40

industrial processed uh grains and

play27:43

refined industrial process added sugars

play27:46

so these things are just wasting

play27:49

opportunities with bites and that are

play27:50

going to hurt our cellular health and

play27:53

something just absolutely astonishing to

play27:55

me is that we eat 7 metric tons of food

play28:00

in our lifetime like I don't even I

play28:01

can't even imagine how much food that is

play28:04

it's probably like a football field or

play28:05

more but we eat 70 metric tons of food

play28:08

and that 70 metric tons is like the it's

play28:12

not only the bricks that will build our

play28:13

body each day because you know this this

play28:15

conception I think in the Western World

play28:17

you've brought up sort of like more

play28:18

Eastern Traditions but like we have this

play28:20

such a such

play28:21

a an incorrect view of the body in the

play28:24

Western World of this thing it's like a

play28:27

static thing I am am Casey and you are

play28:29

Josh and we are separate and I am a

play28:31

thing and I'm going to live and then I'm

play28:32

going to die but that's really not the

play28:34

way the body's true nature is at all we

play28:36

are actually billions of cells are dying

play28:40

every day and being reborn we're

play28:44

constantly discarding cells and you know

play28:47

atoms from our body we're we're re and

play28:49

replenishing them we're you know making

play28:51

a whole new gut lining and a whole new

play28:53

skin you know every every few weeks and

play28:57

what need to realize is that food that

play28:59

70 metric tons is literally the the ink

play29:02

that we 3D print the next version of our

play29:04

body with and we are constantly

play29:06

exchanging matter with the world through

play29:07

food and so every day this is the reason

play29:11

we have to be consistent about putting

play29:13

those five factors into our body is

play29:15

because every day we're recreating the

play29:17

next version of our s which is both a

play29:19

responsibility but it's also such an

play29:21

exciting opportunity because we're we

play29:24

can just you know always have the

play29:26

opportunity to improve our health by

play29:28

rebuilding a better functional system

play29:30

and that's that's where food is just so

play29:32

special so foundational and unavoidable

play29:35

so the goal really is how do we make the

play29:38

most of that 70 metric tons of

play29:41

opportunity we get by eating the most

play29:44

nutrient whole on processed food and

play29:46

this is why we do need to really

play29:50

eliminate Ultra processed food from our

play29:52

diet the packaged foods that are made in

play29:54

factories of you know Frankenstein like

play29:57

ingredients that we

play29:59

andiz are rad phenomen inory these are

play30:04

justad they are now 70% of our calories

play30:08

that we're eating they are not good

play30:10

instructions or building blocks for our

play30:12

bodies and they are the root of our

play30:14

cells being just in total cellular

play30:16

disarray so really step one is just

play30:18

eliminating Ultra processed food and

play30:20

moving towards more unprocessed

play30:23

minimally processed even thoughtfully

play30:26

processed foods you can buy Foods in

play30:27

pack packages but just making sure you

play30:29

really understand and recognize the

play30:31

ingredients and then ideally buying as

play30:33

much food from as close to the source as

play30:35

possible the farmers markets and people

play30:37

might think oh that's kind of frivolous

play30:39

or a nice to have but the reason it's

play30:42

not just a nice to have it's actually so

play30:44

important to eat the unprocessed food

play30:46

ideally from as close to your home as

play30:48

possible is because we want maximal

play30:51

nutrients per bite we want to maximize

play30:54

the 70 metric tons and we know that once

play30:57

food is harvested it starts drastically

play30:59

losing its nutrient composition each day

play31:02

it's separated from the earth and so the

play31:04

fresher food that we can get higher

play31:06

quality you know Farms soil knowing the

play31:09

source and reducing processed food

play31:11

aiming for those five you know

play31:14

categories of food I talked about that

play31:17

that is really going to set you up for

play31:19

great great cellular health no matter

play31:21

whether you're vegan or keto or

play31:23

somewhere in between it's great advice

play31:25

you know one of the things I think

play31:27

you've had a really unique unque um

play31:29

situation with is in being a co-founder

play31:31

of levels is looking at a lot of data

play31:33

that's constantly coming in from people

play31:35

their blood glucose levels and also

play31:38

you've spent some time writing a new

play31:39

book good energy what are maybe what is

play31:42

one or two things that have really

play31:43

surprised you as you look at the data

play31:46

that's coming from levels and as you've

play31:48

worked on writing your book what are

play31:49

some things that again have been you

play31:52

know some of those surprise learnings oh

play31:55

there have been a bunch of surprises I

play31:56

think from our level

play31:58

data one of the things that's been so

play32:01

interesting is that people who start the

play32:03

program with a BMI above 30 so basically

play32:06

in the obese range which is now about

play32:08

45% of Americans um so very very common

play32:13

um if they log more food logs in the app

play32:18

so basically they're recording what

play32:20

they're eating they're mindfully writing

play32:21

down what they ate they actually lose

play32:24

the most weight with the levels program

play32:26

so levels is a continuous glucose

play32:28

monitor paired with an app and some

play32:29

people will log food and some people may

play32:31

just look at the data but not log meals

play32:34

but logging meals was associated with

play32:37

the most weight loss and people are

play32:38

losing I mean we've had people lose over

play32:40

80 pounds that's not you know not

play32:42

everyone but um that was really

play32:45

interesting and it actually mirrors a

play32:47

really large study done by Kaiser

play32:48

Permanente where they had um close to

play32:51

2,000 patients going through a 20we

play32:54

weight loss program and they found

play32:56

something very similar but but not

play32:58

through an app they found that the the

play33:00

more meals that people recorded in a

play33:03

food journal that was one of the

play33:05

statistically significant things that

play33:08

actually was associated with weight loss

play33:09

so levels data and that data also show

play33:12

that taking the time in the weight loss

play33:16

journey to record your food can be a

play33:18

very valuable way to accelerate progress

play33:21

and I think it comes down to mindfulness

play33:24

right like actually you know not not

play33:26

kidding yourself about what's going into

play33:27

mouth and really being clear about it so

play33:29

that was a surprising thing and um when

play33:32

I was much younger I was actually very

play33:34

overweight and keeping a religious food

play33:36

journal was something that really really

play33:38

helped me stay accountable I don't do it

play33:40

anymore um but it it's I think it's a

play33:43

great tool and I certainly had my

play33:45

patience when I was practicing keep food

play33:46

journals because you think about it

play33:49

we're eating two to three pounds of food

play33:50

per day that's a lot of molecular

play33:52

information imagine a patient was taking

play33:54

two to three pounds of pills every day

play33:57

which is you know just molecular

play33:58

information and they weren't telling you

play34:00

about it you'd have no idea how to

play34:01

councel them so we we really do need to

play34:03

know what molecules are going in the

play34:06

body that's what food is so um I think a

play34:09

second Super surprising um thing I

play34:12

learned for the book was actually about

play34:15

how speed of eating has a huge impact on

play34:18

metabolic health and blood sugar and our

play34:20

propensity to basically have good or bad

play34:22

energy and there have been several

play34:24

studies actually showing that people who

play34:26

eat the fastest

play34:28

have the worst metabolic health and the

play34:31

people who eat the slowest have like a

play34:32

two to four times lower risk of

play34:34

developing metabolic diseases you know

play34:37

which are essentially rooted in bad

play34:38

energy and so this is such a great

play34:41

message for people who maybe they're not

play34:43

ready to give up particular Foods or

play34:46

change their diet but they can change

play34:48

the how of how they're eating not the

play34:50

what necessarily but the how ideally

play34:52

both but if you are going to eat

play34:54

processed food you know that's where

play34:56

you're at right now that's fine try

play34:58

eating it much slower and I think what

play35:01

you'll find is that it changes the whole

play35:03

experience it gives you more time to

play35:04

trigger Sati mechanisms you might not

play35:07

eat as much and you might actually tune

play35:08

in with how it's actually tasting and

play35:10

whether you're really getting as much

play35:12

you know satisfaction out of it as you

play35:13

think so so that's been really impactful

play35:16

for me because I from my surgical

play35:17

training I wolf down food you know I'm

play35:19

just like always was eating on the go

play35:21

and now really focusing on deep breaths

play35:23

and mindful eating and focusing on

play35:25

gratitude while eating um those things

play35:27

all have an association with um with

play35:30

better metabolic Health um so those are

play35:32

two with food I would say the one other

play35:35

and this is just it's it's fairly basic

play35:39

but probably the most astounding data I

play35:42

saw for the entire book um is the power

play35:45

of walking it sounds underwhelming but

play35:47

it's it's one that the you know we

play35:50

should reiterate because the average

play35:51

American is actually only walking 3,500

play35:53

steps per day but if you look at data

play35:57

from big journals so I'm talking like

play35:59

jamama Journal of the American Medical

play36:01

Association they're looking at 2,000

play36:04

adults over 10 years looking at their

play36:07

steps and the people who just walked

play36:10

7,000 steps or more per day had a 50 to

play36:13

70% lower chance of dying in the

play36:15

follow-up period than the people who

play36:17

walked less than 7,000 steps a day and

play36:19

this has been recreated in several other

play36:22

studies um some with different step

play36:24

amounts but there was another study with

play36:26

thousands of participants for 10 years

play36:29

and if they watch between 8 and 12,000

play36:31

steps a day they had a 50 to 65% lower

play36:34

chance of dying in the follow-up period

play36:35

and you see this for every chronic

play36:37

disease lower dementia risk lower cancer

play36:40

risk lower diabetes risk lower obesity

play36:42

risk with the rates in the 40 to 60%

play36:45

lower just by taking these steps and I

play36:48

think a key Point here is you know it's

play36:52

it's not just about steps steps is us

play36:55

you know that's great but what I believe

play36:58

this is a proxy metric for is how much

play37:01

you're moving throughout the day because

play37:04

if you are moving 7 8 12,000 steps a day

play37:08

it means you're getting up regularly

play37:10

throughout the day and moving most

play37:12

likely it's probably not that you're

play37:13

taking just a f mile run at the end of

play37:14

the day you're probably moving more

play37:16

throughout the day and we know that this

play37:19

moving regularly in small low intensity

play37:23

spurts throughout the day like walking

play37:26

around the block you you know every hour

play37:28

throughout the day is

play37:31

actually extremely important for

play37:34

metabolic Health even more so than if

play37:37

you sat all day and exercise just for 30

play37:40

minutes or an hour at the end of the day

play37:41

and the reason is this and I this is

play37:43

something that I really think is helpful

play37:44

for people to visualize every time you

play37:47

take even a little two to three minute

play37:48

walk throughout the day you are actually

play37:51

signaling through muscle contraction for

play37:53

your cells to push glucose channels from

play37:56

inside the cell to the cell membrane

play37:59

muscle contraction can do that and so if

play38:02

you're doing little spurts of activity

play38:03

throughout the day you are signaling for

play38:05

your cells to keep glucose channels at

play38:08

the cell membrane all day to take up

play38:11

glucose process it by the mitochondria

play38:13

turn into energy as opposed to just

play38:16

letting it sit in the bloodstream and

play38:17

get converted to fat and so you're

play38:20

creating this totally different

play38:22

physiology at your cell membrane and

play38:24

inside the cell you can think of the

play38:26

alternative which is someone who may

play38:28

consider themselves active but they

play38:30

actually sit you know at work for 8

play38:32

hours a day those glucose channels are

play38:35

stuck inside the cell not doing the work

play38:38

they need to do and then maybe they take

play38:40

a jog for 40 minutes at the end of the

play38:41

day that's great but it doesn't change

play38:44

what happened at the cellular level for

play38:46

the rest of the day so I think the real

play38:49

framework shift here is a way from this

play38:52

we have this religiosity about quote

play38:54

unquote exercise which is very very

play38:57

valuable and important but I think what

play38:59

we really need to do is rebuild the

play39:02

concept of motion throughout the day our

play39:05

bodies our cells in motion have

play39:07

different metabolic physiology than than

play39:10

a body that is sitting so how in our

play39:12

modern world do we find ways to take

play39:14

some of the activities that we're doing

play39:16

seated and do them either standing or

play39:18

walking and that's sort of like a like a

play39:22

reflection that each of us should do you

play39:23

know how can I convert my seated

play39:25

activities to to movement so that can

play39:27

push those glucose channels to the cell

play39:29

membrane as much as

play39:31

possible yeah it's fantastic advice I

play39:33

think yeah I mean when I when I first

play39:35

saw that research on walking I was just

play39:37

blown away I mean I thought for a year

play39:39

as well weight training is going to be

play39:41

the number one form of movement for

play39:43

longevity and it is important and it's

play39:45

the second most but walking is number

play39:47

one I mean it really really is

play39:48

mindblowing and it makes sense what

play39:50

you're saying and this is why for myself

play39:53

I try and walk three times a day even if

play39:54

it's for five minutes I try and write

play39:56

around breakfast right after lunch and

play39:59

then right uh sometimes do an evening

play40:00

walk right before or a lot of times

play40:02

right after dinner just get a little bit

play40:04

of movement in and it makes a huge

play40:06

difference and so especially if you're

play40:07

at work if you can eat a slow lunch take

play40:10

your time go for a 15-minute walk right

play40:13

afterwards it does so so much for your

play40:15

health um you know one of the things I

play40:17

noticed is I was wearing a level's blood

play40:19

glucose monitor and measuring my blood

play40:21

glucose what and by the way everybody

play40:23

it's so important that your blood sugar

play40:25

levels stay balanced that they're not

play40:26

spiking up and down throughout the day

play40:28

or staying very high because that's an

play40:30

indicator of well numerous things one is

play40:33

this metabolic syndrome as Dr Casey's

play40:35

talking about but with that inflammation

play40:38

when the sugar is not inside your cell

play40:39

when it stays inside outside your

play40:42

bloodstream or it stays spiked it's

play40:44

going to cause inflammation in your body

play40:46

and it's going to cause you to age more

play40:48

quickly so you really want to make sure

play40:50

that's balanced one thing I noticed Dr

play40:52

Casey was there were numerous times

play40:54

where there were I would do things and I

play40:57

thought I would see my blood sugar go up

play40:59

and I thought and it had nothing to do

play41:00

with food most of the time for me it was

play41:03

for instance driving driving a car you

play41:05

know I thought hey is this it was a

play41:07

fairly high stress thing for me and and

play41:09

other people too this wasn't just a Josh

play41:11

a you know get stressed uh driving thing

play41:14

I was really surprised where if I was

play41:17

doing that that caused my blood sugar to

play41:19

raise as example so anyway there are

play41:20

some PR surprising things I've had uh

play41:23

over the years is I've started to really

play41:25

pay attention to metabolic heal

play41:28

which again everybody this is so

play41:29

important for your overall health you

play41:32

know last couple questions for you um

play41:34

what is the you know you've talked about

play41:36

bad energy we've talked about good

play41:38

energy what is the single most important

play41:41

message you want your listeners to walk

play41:44

away and understand uh based on your

play41:48

book good

play41:50

energy the number one message um that I

play41:55

think is really valuable for people to

play41:57

understand is that we have been sold a

play42:00

story about disconnection being normal

play42:04

that fundamentally disconnection is the

play42:07

root of our chronic disease epidemic and

play42:09

so this is on several levels both

play42:12

practical and also I think spiritual I

play42:14

think that on one level we've built a

play42:16

system of Health Care that is focused on

play42:19

fragmenting the body into dozens of

play42:21

different parts 100 plus Specialties

play42:24

20,000 plus pharmaceutical medications

play42:27

everything's about separation and that

play42:29

is just not the way the body works even

play42:31

though I know that's the way we're

play42:32

taught and the what we learn about our

play42:34

bodies and what we internalize it's just

play42:36

not true we're a connected system with

play42:39

core physiology happening in all the

play42:41

different cells around our body and we

play42:43

need to optimize that through a

play42:44

connected root cause lens to be healthy

play42:48

you know period end of story the second

play42:51

piece of connection that I think we need

play42:53

to really internalize is this idea of

play42:56

connection between our bodies and

play42:58

everything else in not only the world

play43:01

but like the cosmos really I think that

play43:03

our Western modern view of the body like

play43:06

we talked about earlier is very much

play43:07

about separation it's me it's you you

play43:10

know food is just calories they just go

play43:12

in and calories a calorie and you know

play43:15

and I think really realizing like we're

play43:17

connected in an interdependent Global

play43:20

and Cosmic ecosystem that you know we

play43:24

it's it's that is the reality so we we

play43:27

have to live in a way that respects that

play43:29

so the food we're eating literally is

play43:31

incorporated into our cells and is the

play43:33

information that changes our gene

play43:35

expression the air we breathe you know

play43:38

and whether it's got pollutants in it or

play43:40

not that's going to actually go into our

play43:42

body incorporate into us the way we

play43:44

interact with other people connect with

play43:45

other humans and animals even totally

play43:48

changes our physical biology like us

play43:51

interacting as other humans with

play43:53

trusting humans changes the hormone

play43:56

levels in our bodies instantly oxytocin

play43:58

serotonin we are our own little

play44:00

manufacturing plants of Health promoting

play44:03

or disease promoting hormones and the

play44:04

way we connect with other people

play44:06

directly impacts that um our connection

play44:08

with sunlight you know I mean we're

play44:10

we've been told to fear the Sun but the

play44:11

reality is that the sun literally the

play44:14

photons speak to our cells and our

play44:15

retina and our skin to change gene

play44:17

expression and change hormone function

play44:19

so we need to start seeing oursel

play44:22

embedded not embedded in but actually

play44:24

one with everything around us because

play44:28

everything about our modern culture in

play44:30

the west is about you know very much

play44:32

seeing things as isolated so we don't

play44:34

respect the environment we don't we we

play44:36

accept things like social isolation

play44:38

which is insane you know we accept this

play44:41

this this reality of Separation which is

play44:44

false and then we end up locking

play44:46

ourselves you know on our computers

play44:49

inside the four walls of our homes and

play44:51

we end up getting sick so connection of

play44:54

root cause physiology connection between

play44:56

us and everything else and respect of

play44:58

those connections and nurturing those

play45:00

connections and then I think um oh and

play45:03

also yeah just like soil Health like you

play45:05

know our food is literally we're

play45:06

connected to the soil we're connected to

play45:08

all the microbes in the soil all of that

play45:10

um and then I think on the biggest

play45:11

picture level a real deeper sense of

play45:14

that spiritual connection I think to and

play45:17

this gets into this concept of

play45:18

fearlessness that you mentioned in the

play45:20

beginning of the episode but also it's

play45:21

like the last chapter of the book and I

play45:22

think it's one we cannot under recognize

play45:25

we have a very secular very desanctified

play45:28

very despir Health Care system I mean

play45:31

100% despir healthare system and even

play45:35

our culture too and I think what that

play45:37

does to us is it makes us in a way we

play45:41

can't even probably even understand

play45:42

fully because we're so a part of it it

play45:44

makes us so existentially afraid as

play45:46

humans we're afraid of mortality we're

play45:48

afraid of we're afraid of any we're

play45:51

afraid of so much and we just so we just

play45:53

are glued to our screens you know

play45:56

looking at all the fear sensationalist

play45:58

media because we want to understand this

play45:59

world we're living in and I think what

play46:02

people really would would so benefit

play46:05

from understanding is that that that

play46:07

very like fearful world where we're

play46:10

afraid of mortality we're afraid of

play46:12

everyone else you know things happening

play46:14

5,000 miles away it is crushing our

play46:17

metabolic Health that constant

play46:19

existential fear it literally through

play46:22

our hormones and neurotransmitters and

play46:24

nerve impulses changes our mitochondri

play46:26

andrial function that that that belief

play46:29

system and that fear on our psychology

play46:31

and what it does is through a process

play46:33

that is fascinating called the cell

play46:35

danger response which is Medi bettered

play46:36

mitochondria these psychological fears

play46:40

change the resources in our cells from

play46:43

going towards thriving and rebuilding

play46:45

and health promotion to actually like uh

play46:49

threat and defense signals in our body

play46:52

so it actually pushes us more towards

play46:53

using all our precious energy and

play46:55

resources not towards cellular health

play46:57

but towards defense and alarm and

play46:59

inflammation so just to wrap this all

play47:03

up going down that harder journey of

play47:06

unpacking what are the deepest fears in

play47:09

your life what are those rooted in how

play47:11

are you having poor boundaries with the

play47:13

information that's coming into your head

play47:15

totally changes our cellular biology

play47:17

totally changes our mitochondrial health

play47:19

and so I think a big part of the process

play47:22

of truly getting well as a culture is

play47:24

actually deeply meditating on this

play47:26

concept of connect

play47:27

in ourselves ourselves and everything

play47:29

else in the cosmos and you know this

play47:32

more existential connection um that you

play47:35

might call spiritual that is what

play47:38

creates the the foundation for us to

play47:41

truly heal as a country because we could

play47:43

spend $50 trillion on our fragmented

play47:47

approach right now it will not make us

play47:49

healthy we could spend much less on a

play47:52

much more A system that focuses on

play47:55

respect for connections and we would all

play47:57

heal mind body and spirit so that I

play47:59

think that's the biggest message from

play48:01

the book even though it's uh pops up a

play48:04

little bit from like the technicalities

play48:06

of glucose monitoring and all that I

play48:07

think it's really the most important

play48:09

part well I absolutely agree and I think

play48:11

that's one of the principles of the show

play48:12

that I I constantly teach on is is that

play48:14

health is absolutely physical but it's

play48:16

also mental and spiritual and I even

play48:18

think today you know when you look at

play48:20

the mental health issues which have far

play48:23

outgrown over the past seven years

play48:25

almost every other condition

play48:27

uh of of by by category um it's due to

play48:32

uh really the the you know if I go way

play48:35

back back to the 50s and 60s it's when

play48:37

we pulled God out of schools and

play48:38

religion and spirituality out of schools

play48:40

and learning morality and ethics of that

play48:42

type uh now we're we're paying for it

play48:45

with with that with with this generation

play48:47

in terms of the mental identity and the

play48:49

instability and uh people really being

play48:52

lost in a lot of these ways they don't

play48:54

know the uh a lot of the moral stories

play48:57

anymore and and how to navigate the

play48:59

world based on what truth is and so

play49:01

anyways to to your point I think you

play49:04

know a six Soul equals a sick body and

play49:06

there's a lot of people today with sick

play49:08

Souls sick Spirits which are then

play49:09

affecting their physiology and so we see

play49:11

that in a number of ways uh today and of

play49:14

course there's so many other things you

play49:16

I've talked about how you know

play49:18

television today and movies and songs

play49:20

they're darker and darker and darker uh

play49:23

o over the past 50 years and so I think

play49:25

that affects us uh and along with so

play49:28

many of the other things you shared

play49:29

today so I think these are amazing

play49:30

pieces of advice and I want to also just

play49:33

let everybody know um Dr Casey's book I

play49:36

I I I recommend it want to encourage you

play49:38

to go out and buy it it's called good

play49:40

energy and it's really a beautiful blend

play49:42

of getting into this cellular

play49:44

mitochondrial Health how do you overcome

play49:47

this first Domino that makes us all sick

play49:50

how do you start to heal at that

play49:51

cellular level along with not just a lot

play49:54

of these physical you know you know

play49:57

advice from the Physical Realm but also

play49:59

mental and spiritual ideas in terms of

play50:01

here's how we get a six cell well which

play50:04

is so so important for for for our

play50:06

overall health so Dr Casey I want to say
