uh uh I'm thankful for Jason's

start okay unfortunately is

Hungary uh the Hungarian he doesn't

speak the Hungarian language so uh it's

the Practical side of biblical care and

counseling so in my sessions have tried

to show how the reading of the Bible

naturally does biblical care and

counseling

okay so when you do your morning or

evening

devotions you are naturally experiencing

scripture

that give a foundational understanding

of biblical care and

counseling okay and then uh the final

comment before we get to Hebrews 13 is I

think I just need to

reinforce that with Biblical care and

counseling we are not trying to compete

with other forms of

care okay we are thankful for Christian

psychology we are thankful for good

psychology

okay in God's common Grace uh he has

given many people uh the ability to care

well for others and help

them okay and we are also thankful for

biblical care and

counseling

if I could summarize maybe one of the

greatest dangers of biblical care and

counsiling it would be

this it would be that we need to slow

down our care for one

another okay uh instead of just giving

someone a Bible verse or a nice talk how

do we slow down by loving and listening

to them

that okay so instruments in a redeemer's

hand says the process of biblical care

is love no speak and

do okay we often begin with speak and

do but we need to slow

down okay do they know that they're

loved have we listened to their

story and then we begin to speak and

then we begin to put an action plan

together okay I think psychology does

this very well they listen very

well and biblical care can can learn

from

that and if we think about it when we

read the

Bible we know that we're

loved we know that we're

heard the Bible understands our

hearts okay we love it when the word of

God gives us

wisdom uh we love it when the word of

God uh gives us a way forward in the

complex issues of

life so if we have one take away from

today or from the conference it's let's

slow down uh let's love and listen

before we speak and

do okay we're going to look at uh

Hebrews

13 and we are going to seek to uh

encourage leaders and encourage the

church

okay have you ever wondered what

Biblical leaders

do have you ever wondered what a

Biblical Church

does one of the verses that we might

turn to is Hebrews

13 uh verse

uh 17 Hebrews

13:17 oh I don't have it that's

hilarious okay apparently I only up

supposed to do up to 16 okay verse 17

says obey your leaders and submit to

them okay so when we go to church uh

leaders we we say well we're to obey the

leaders and we're to submit to

them and that can be difficult to

understand because leaders haven't

always been good

leaders sometimes there's been spiritual

abuse sometimes there's been false teach

so what type of obedience is this what

type of submission is

this okay another thing that we've

worked hard on this past weekend is

every text has a

context so there's a story that comes

before the text

and there's a story that comes after the

text and there's a story within the

immediate

context so how do we read the text

within the context of the book of

Hebrews

in the context of the Old

Testament and in the context of the

coming of

Jesus okay if a if a text is not put

within its context we can make it say

anything the danger is that leaders can

say you just need to obey me you just

need to submit to

me because we can make the text say

anything we want without a

context so what is the context to

Hebrews 13:1

17 how are leaders to lead and what is

the church to be

doing okay if you were with us last

night the immediate context is uh in

Hebrews

13:1 let Brotherly Love

continue okay Hebrews 1 through chapter

12 summarized is Jesus is better

oh you think the world is better Jesus

is

better you think the Old Testament is

better Jesus is

better you want to go back to laws and

regulations Jesus is

better

okay all the idols of this life Jesus is

better and because Jesus is better in

your suffering Jesus will care for

you we are drawn to Jesus we desire

Jesus Hebrews chapter 13 says let let

Brotherly Love

continue so as we have been loved by

Jesus how do we love one

another so whatever it means for leaders

to submit to leaders or to obey leaders

and submit to them is done in the

context of love that

okay does that make

sense but there's a problem with that

right because leaders can think that

they are loving their

people in brotherly love but in fact

it's not

love

okay we know that love needs to be

grounded in

truth and we know that love needs to be

grounded in a right understanding of

God's word properly

interpreted so I let Brotherly Love

continue

you and then we read it talks about

Hospitality it talks about visiting

those in prison it talks about uh

protecting the marriage bed and it talks

about being free from the love of

money so church leaders should be

hospitable

they should be welcoming

people they should be for

people church leaders should be

merciful those who are broken they

should their their heart should break

for the

broken church leaders should protect

their marriage

bed church leaders should be uh uh

should be free from the Love of

Money okay and we looked at that last

night now we come to verse

seven and we read remember your leaders

who have spoken God's word to

you as you carefully observe the outcome

of their lives imitate their

faith why are we able to obey and submit

to

leaders

because we learn in this verse that

leaders lead by obeying and submitting

to the word of

God okay so when it says obey and submit

it's talking about leaders pointing back

to the word of God and their lives and

saying we are to submit to the word of

God

okay so remember your

leaders who have so what have leaders

done they've spoken God's word to

you the primary task of a church leader

is to speak God's

word okay we'll come back to that in a

minute they are also to carefully

observe the outcome of their

lives in other words leaders not only

speak God's word but they live God's

word

okay so when we go to uh obey and submit

to leaders we are entrust we are

submitting and obeying to those who

speak God's word and those who live

God's

word so properly understood we are loved

by

leaders

and we ultimately submit and Obey to

God's

word which leaders are seeking to live

out in their

faith okay that's what Biblical care

is we love people we seek to hear their

story

and we seek to bring God's word to

them okay but a problem comes up because

the question is how do we know if we're

correctly handling God's

word how do you know if you're teaching

God's

word how do you know if a leader is

teaching God's word so that you can obey

and submit to their

leadership okay

so uh the author of Hebrews says in

verse 8 this is to be the message

of God's

word the from Genesis to Revelation

God's word is summarized in verse

8 somebody asks you uh you read the

Bible what does the bible

mean

okay Jesus is the same yesterday today

and

forever Jesus in the Old

Testament Jesus in the New

Testament Jesus in the

future uh

fall um or creation fall Redemption New

Creation yeah

Jesus is the

same the entire Old Testament pointed to

the coming of

Jesus Jesus

came lived died rose

again he is the same

today he is the same

forever the primary message of church

leaders is Jesus

Christ now that presents another

question what does it mean that we only

need

Jesus that's how some people do biblical

care you only need

Jesus go to Jesus

uh pray to

Jesus and none of that is wrong but what

does it

mean right what does it mean to go to

Jesus what do we pray to

Jesus okay so we have explained to us

the message of what it means that Jesus

is the same yesterday today and

forever

okay church leaders preach God's word

and live God's

word the message is

Jesus what does it mean that the message

is

Jesus verse n don't be led astray by

various kinds of strange

teachings

lots of strange teachings out

there lots of strange teachings out

there and it'll be well this is in the

name of

Jesus

okay don't be led astray by various

kinds of strange

teachings

okay what is not a strange

teaching it is good for the heart to be

established by

grace and not by food

regulations oh that is so

good

right it's what we talked about

yesterday afternoon and I know not

everybody was

there but the people of Hebrews wanted

to go back to the Old Testament and they

wanted to go back to regulations just

tell me what to

do so what happens to our young people

and our young

adults

and our

children they grow up thinking that

Jesus following Jesus is following a

bunch of

regulations if they do this if they wear

this if they don't do

that but it says since those who observe

them have not

benefited you can wear and not wear

whatever you like but that won't

ultimately benefit

you but there

are teachings that are strange teachings

they're outside the bounds of

scripture okay so what did these food

regulations

do they pointed to

Jesus they pointed to being established

by Grace not by by

regulations how do we know that they

pointed to

Jesus verse

10 we have an altar from which those who

worship at the Tabernacle do not have a

right to

eat okay for the bodies of those animals

whose blood is brought into the most

holy place by the high priest as a sin

offering are burned outside the

camp okay you could look at Leviticus

16:27 the sacrifice went outside the

camp okay the Old Testament food

regulations the Old Testament animal

sacrifices all pointed to

verse 12 therefore Jesus also suffered

outside the

camp okay it's it's saying don't don't

go back to

regulations don't go back to uh Old

Testament food regulations and um all

these

uh ways that people tell you what to do

and what not to do and that's true

Christianity because they they have not

benefited okay what happened to the

people of Israel

they wandered in the desert for 40 years

because they

sinned they ended up going into

captivity with Assyria and

Babylon bonon there was nothing wrong

with the old Covenant what was wrong was

the people could not obey the basic laws

of

God

but who did obey the law of

God

Jesus he obeyed what we could not

obey he suffered outside the

gate by his own

blood so that we might be be

Sanctified to be Sanctified is to be

made

clean okay it is all by

Grace we are saved not because of what

we do or wear or

eat not because we obey or

disobey not because of a list of

regulations that made you feel

guilty you are saved by

grace you have a heart that's

established by

Grace it cannot be shaken

don't go back to the Old Testament

regulations Jesus suffered outside the

camp by his own

blood that he might sanctify his

people how does God see

you when you're having a good day does

God love you

more

when you wear the right thing or eat the

right thing or do the right thing does

God love you

more when you don't eat the right thing

do the right thing wear the right thing

does God love you

less so you need to do better you need

to be

better see this is why biblical care is

so impactful because it is a place of

Grace when we tell people to go to Jesus

we tell people to go to a place of Grace

of

Mercy one who has lived the life that we

could not

live

one who died the death you dare not die

alone without

Jesus the one who rose again on the

third day to give all those who come to

him everlasting

life so that we might be a sanctified

people when Jesus looks at you he

doesn't look at your good days or your

bad days he looks at you through the

person and work of

Jesus the first question God asks of you

is not whether you've been good or

bad the first question God asks is do

you know how much I love

you is that not just your heart just

filled

with I can just rest in the love of

God and I've had a really bad

day I yelled at my wife I yelled at my

kids I looked at

pornography I

coveted I got

angry and I did all of that in an

hour and I say well I got to do

something I got to have regulations to

make sense of the Christian

Life

but Jesus went outside the

camp he is our

sacrifice he has Sanctified

us when God looks at us through Jesus we

are clean because of the work of

Jesus when you came to Jesus you were

you were Justified and you were

Sanctified you were made right with God

and you were made clean by God through

Jesus and Jesus Christ is the same

yesterday today and

forever that's how much you're loved by

him

that's not a strange

teaching a list of rules and regulations

is strange

teaching we we have a bit more work to

do but I I just want to pause for a

second and I sincerely want to ask

you okay I because it hasn't been asked

all

conference are you a

Christian are you a believer in the Lord

Jesus

Christ you may have grown up in the

church

you may have said you know some days I'm

a good Christian some days I'm not a

good

Christian uh you may say well I'm a

Christian and I hope someday you know

Jesus doesn't leave

me and I might ask you well why what why

are you why do you believe that you're a

Christian and you say well you know I'm

I do all these good

things I don't do this I don't do that

that's what I've been

taught okay I want us to absolutely

understand by God's grace that it is

Jesus yesterday forever or yesterday

today and

forever

to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ is

to bring all of our junk and all of our

sin before him and tell him our

story and to know that Jesus

forgives we deserve the punishment of

hell from God for our

sin Jesus went to the cross in order to

suffer Our God's Wrath on our

behalf he died for our

sin and then he rose again so that we

would have life now and

everlasting

Jesus just didn't die to give us

everlasting life Jesus died to give us

life

now so you say you mean all I need to do

is believe put my faith in

Jesus Jesus has done

everything Jesus has forgiven my sins

yesterday today and

forever there is no more to our

Salvation than the name of

Jesus and he is the same yesterday today

and

forever if you if you are not a

Believer I invite you to come to

Jesus

with your sin and with things that you

wouldn't tell anybody else and say Jesus

this is who I am will you please

forgive

okay okay let's uh go to if if Jesus is

the same yesterday today and forever

then what does the Christian Life look

like okay

okay let's go verse

13 we'll

just uh let us go to him outside the

camp bearing his

disgrace and then verse

14 for we do not have an enduring City

here in instead we seek the one to

come you say to yourself well what if if

the Christian life isn't all about

regulations what is the Christian Life

about okay remember we are a sanctified

people we are a clean set aart

people

okay the first aspect of the Christian

Life is we will be Outsiders in this

world okay you're Pilgrim in this

world you're going to be different

you're going to feel

different okay you're passing

through because there's another city to

come it's an enduring

City okay so that means with the little

time that you have to

live you can get through the

suffering

you can live in a dark culture that is

just different than the

church okay because you say I have an

enduring

City the second thing about the

Christian Life is found in verse

15 we are people who give praise to

God okay if we don't go back to

regulations what do we if we don't do

regulations what do we

do okay we live a life of

worship we live a life of

praise notice it says the fruit of lips

that confess his

name okay I'm not going to do that

because I confess the name of

Jesus I'm not going to yell at my wife

or my

husband because I confess the name of

Jesus

and he has given me a new

heart and he's going to and he's given

me a new

life so by God's grace I will give

thanks and I will live by the agenda of

Christ not my own selfish

agenda okay we will be strangers in this

world we will have a life of praise

to share for God is pleased with such

sacrifices okay do you want a

regulation do

good but tell me what to do in this

situation

regulations Grace leads us to this

because of our Union with Jesus

Christ the spirit and our Union with

Christ as God as our

father based on the word of truth will

guide you into

good when you're yelling at your wife

you're probably saying to yourself that

this is not

good and the spirit convicts you this is

good you go to your wife and you say

please forgive

me I yelled at

you I want to do what's

good I want to get rid of this garbage

in my life why am I angry

and you say Jesus give me Grace not to

be

angry fill me with your

spirit okay that leads all the way to uh

verse

17 obey your leaders and submit to

them

in other words by the time we've done

all this hard work of 16 verses it's not

all that fearful to obey Godly

leaders okay if verse 17 is all we have

that verse can fill us with

fear

okay we are first of all to be followers

of Jesus not followers of

leaders we are to follow leaders who

follow

Jesus we are to follow leaders who do

not offer strange

teaching we to follow leaders who do not

bring us back to strange

regulations we're to follow leaders or

obey and submit to leaders who profess

Jesus is the same yesterday today and

forever and point us to a life of Mercy

a life of love a life of goodness

I will say

this that as a

leader by God's grace the greatest joy

is being able to be with God's

people who love

Jesus

that's what I think it means in verse 17

so that you can give you can do they can

do this with joy and and not with

grief whether a leader or whether not a

leader we all seek to serve Christ and

live in his grace

okay

so if you are a

leader and this can extend also to um in

the house as parents as you seek to lead

your

children uh God if you point people to

Jesus and live in his grace then uh then

that is a good good

place that's what God calls us to

do if you are a church

leader and you are leading by Grace

Jesus yesterday today and forever that

is is a good place to

be so what is your greatest calling as a

church leader as a parent as a Biblical

caregiver it's to grow in the

gospel

to know more and more that you are loved

by

God and the more you know that you're

loved by God the more you will become

Christlike why do we go outside the camp

where Jesus

is

because we're followers of

Christ our desire is to become more and

more like

Christ and what did Christ do when we

came to

him he loved us he heard our

story he spoke to us and he gave us new

life and that's simply what Biblical

counseling

is

and that's what leadership in church

is we love and we listen to God's

people and then we speak and apply the

Gospel of Jesus

Christ so that we all know that we are

deeply loved by

God okay let's

pray

father we live in a complex Dark World

with many people who have questions and

are

suffering this

conference we've wrestled with how we

can care for one

another

and we thank you that we've ended with

the name of

Jesus I pray for any here who may have

never put their faith in the Lord Jesus

Christ pray for the children the young

people the young adults the older

ones

that they may Place their love in Jesus

if they have not done

[Music]

that may this just not be another

morning of hearing another

message to try to live without Christ is

so

exhausting

the path of pain the path of sin is so

painful Lord do your work of redemption

this

morning and we pray not just for those

here but for the country of

Hungary so many who are lost so many who

have never heard the name of

Jesus Lord do a mighty work in this

nation that it may not be filled with

regulations but it may be filled with

grace that it might not be filled uh

with works but it might be filled with

Jesus

Lord we pray for those who are suffering

and

hurting may they find their rest in

Jesus who was is and is forever

more we pray for one

another

yet that Jesus may be the name that we

pray

and that you may continue to give us

Grace to love and know one

another so we may speak and do in one

another's

lives in Jesus name we pray
