Hellynn: I got tested again.

play00:02

And to my surprise, my AMH had gone up seven times.

play00:20

Hello, ladies.

play00:21

My name is Hellynn and I started this channel so that I can talk about my IVF

play00:27

experience abroad in Korea last year.

play00:30

And I'm actually still in the middle of all of it.

play00:33

I still haven't done my transfer yet, but I dedicated all of 2023 to getting

play00:40

back to back IVF egg retrievals.

play00:43

I am 40 years old and I have diminished ovarian reserve, which basically

play00:48

means that I have a much lower egg count than other women my age.

play00:54

So I dedicated all of last year to getting IVF and making sure that

play00:59

I give myself a chance to have not just one kid, but hopefully two kids.

play01:06

The reason why I traveled to Korea is because it's incredibly efficient there,

play01:11

both treatment wise as well as cost.

play01:13

And so that's the reason I went back.

play01:16

On top of that, I am originally from Korea and so, you know, it just

play01:21

makes sense for me to go back there.

play01:23

And also the government helps to finance a lot of the IVF treatments.

play01:30

If you clicked on this video, then you probably know what AMH already is.

play01:35

It's the hormone that indicates how many eggs that you have left in your reserve.

play01:41

You probably already also know that if you have a low AMH like me...

play01:47

my AMH is almost non existent...

play01:50

it's 0.06...

play01:52

You probably will need more than one cycle.

play01:55

And you really just kind of have to wrap your head around the idea that

play01:59

IVF is going to be a longer term thing than it is for other women.

play02:05

So yeah, I have dedicated all of 2023 to making sure that I

play02:10

give myself the best chance.

play02:12

I've completed seven egg retrievals at this point and that happened between

play02:18

February and November, so a very long period of time, and during that period

play02:25

actually, my AMH has gone up 7x!

play02:35

So a normal AMH level for my age would be one.

play02:42

But before I started IVF, my levels were basically zero.

play02:47

If you're interested in knowing the average for your age, then I'll

play02:52

link where I found this information.

play02:54

Okay, let me give you a rundown of my AMH history.

play02:59

So, September 2021 was when I first tested.

play03:03

This was the first time that I ever even thought to test for anything.

play03:08

I wish that somebody had told me a little bit earlier about fertility

play03:12

and educated me a little better about it because I just was not, I

play03:17

don't know if I wasn't interested.

play03:19

I don't think I was interested.

play03:21

I just, it just wasn't something that occurred to me.

play03:23

I just thought it was so easy to get pregnant.

play03:26

I've seen a lot of women my age get pregnant.

play03:29

I think I really took it for granted.

play03:32

Anyway, I just happened to be in Korea.

play03:34

I knew that the fertility clinics in Korea were great and so I just

play03:39

stopped by one and took a test, just some blood work and had an ultrasound.

play03:45

They saw I believe six follicles or more, six or seven follicles during

play03:51

that that time and my AMH level at that time was 0.64 which is also

play04:01

actually very low, but I didn't even realize that it was that low.

play04:05

I just thought that it was slightly lower than other people and it was fine.

play04:11

Fast forward to March 2022, and this is when I turned 39, and I actually tested

play04:19

with Modern Fertility, which is an at home test kit that you can order, and

play04:25

you just prick your finger and drop a few drops of blood on a strip, and

play04:31

then you dry it, and then you mail it into the lab, and then they come back

play04:35

with the results within a week or two.

play04:38

I signed in online and I checked to see what my results were.

play04:43

They not only test for AMH, but other fertility hormones as well.

play04:48

I could see that my AMH went down slightly from 0.64 to 0.54, and

play04:56

this was in the span of six months.

play04:59

But Modern Fertility said basically that my AMH was only slightly lower

play05:05

than other women my age so I still was not worried at this point.

play05:10

Now, in retrospect, I kind of think that Modern Fertility

play05:13

was a little bit too positive.

play05:15

I wish that somebody would have rang the alarm.

play05:21

Go get help now, but you know, it is what it is.

play05:27

Okay, in August 2022, that's when I had a natural pregnancy

play05:34

and I miscarried at 7 weeks.

play05:39

That used to be really hard to talk about, but now I feel like a lot of

play05:43

time has gone by and I feel a lot more comfortable talking about it now.

play05:49

But at the time, I was so devastated.

play05:51

I really thought that, oh wow, I'm going to be a mom.

play05:56

I look back and I realize that having this pregnancy has given me the

play06:04

desire to really want to become a mom.

play06:08

. And I've just come to realize how precious life is.

play06:13

You can say that the maternal instinct became real during this time.

play06:18

Anyway, when I had my miscarriage, I had my levels checked again.

play06:23

This time I was with Kaiser, who was my new provider.

play06:28

I had some blood work done to show that my AMH had gone down

play06:33

yet again from 0.54 to 0.34.

play06:39

I don't know what's up with all the fours at the end.

play06:42

That's when I realized that this is really urgent.

play06:45

My AMH just keeps falling super fast and so I knew that I needed to take action.

play06:53

February 2023, a few months later, I, I think this was like six or seven

play06:59

months later actually, I went to Korea with the goal of staying there for a

play07:05

few months to get IVF and hopefully come back to the States pregnant.

play07:12

Before we started treatments, I had to do all the tests all

play07:15

over again at that clinic.

play07:17

I got my blood work done and my AMH had fallen literally to nothingness.

play07:24

That's when I found out that my AMH was 0.06.

play07:29

The decline was real.

play07:32

My doctor, who is actually really one of the most famous doctors in Korea, and

play07:39

he has a lot of experience with women who are of advanced maternal age and

play07:45

who have diminished ovarian reserve.

play07:48

He was in shock and he, he was just kind of like, disheartened by this number.

play07:53

I think I was one of the lowest that he's seen.

play07:56

So he was just like, I don't know how it's even possible to have hope at this point,

play08:02

but we can just, you know, give it a go.

play08:05

The great thing about Korea is that they won't turn you away, and they won't

play08:10

turn you away or reject you because it will lower their success rates for their

play08:16

marketing purposes, which some doctors seem to do in the States and I just

play08:21

don't think that's, I just don't think that's very, that's a very good practice.

play08:26

There are definitely a lot of pros and cons when it comes to getting IVF in

play08:30

Korea, but I would say that the fact that they don't turn people away based on their

play08:37

BMI or their AMH levels, it's something that I'm really, really grateful about.

play08:45

So, starting February 2023, I started my IVF treatments and I

play08:51

had monthly retrievals, basically.

play08:54

Once in a while I would take a break between.

play08:57

So September 2023, I finished retrieval five, and before

play09:04

starting six, I got tested again.

play09:08

And to my surprise, my AMH had gone up seven times.

play09:15

Now mind you, seven times from 0.06 is not that much.

play09:21

It's still extremely low.

play09:22

It's 0.4.

play09:25

But we're still minus 1 zero at this point, so it's reason to celebrate for me.

play09:36

So AMH goes up and down regularly, but usually it goes down for women who are

play09:42

of advanced maternal age pretty quickly.

play09:46

So basically after 25, it goes down steadily.

play09:51

After 30, it's a steady decline.

play09:54

And then after 35, it's like,

play09:58

It also depends on your condition.

play10:01

If you're super tired or sick during the time that you get your blood work done,

play10:06

then your AMH is more likely to be lower.

play10:10

I don't know for sure what made my AMH go up, but I do

play10:16

suspect a few different things.

play10:18

I get this question a lot, actually.

play10:20

First of all, I was getting fertility treatments.

play10:23

I was getting IVF.

play10:24

And so, I'm sure the medication had something to do with it.

play10:28

But also, I had changed my entire diet, for that whole year.

play10:33

I gave up most processed foods and stuck to whole foods.

play10:38

I gave up refined sugar.

play10:40

I gave up flour, except for whole wheat flour.

play10:45

White rice, dairy, basically anything white.

play10:49

I also stuck to as much organic food as possible.

play10:54

I only ate red meat twice a week.

play10:58

I ate lots of fish and vegetables and, you know, fruits.

play11:04

I also stayed away from plastic.

play11:06

I tried my best.

play11:08

It's really hard when you're living outside of your own home for that long.

play11:14

And, I don't know, that was really a bit of a challenge.

play11:18

But I tried at least not to use plastic with hot foods.

play11:23

Most of the time I just didn't use plastic at all.

play11:26

Lastly, I was taking supplements consistently that entire time.

play11:32

I'm honestly not sure if this had an impact, but it was

play11:36

just part of what I was doing.

play11:39

I did make a video about that and listed all the supplements that I

play11:42

am taking so I will link that here.

play11:46

On top of all of the supplements that I was taking in that video, I started

play11:52

taking a few other supplements including NAD+ , resveratrol and myo inositol.

play12:00

I had started taking these supplements a couple months, a month or two prior

play12:04

to having my blood tested again.

play12:07

Exercise.

play12:08

I was only doing a lot of like light exercise.

play12:13

I was told not to do anything strenuous or start anything super new.

play12:17

And so I did some yoga a few times out of the week.

play12:22

I went for long walks like an hour every day, if you can believe it.

play12:28

Also, this is just my feeling on it, but after a summer of not being with

play12:33

my husband, he came to visit me and I was just happier and more relaxed and

play12:40

maybe that had something to do with it.

play12:55

I just finished and OMG I'm so dizzy, but we got five eggs.

play13:04

So, after my AMH test, I had my 6th retrieval and this actually ended up

play13:11

being my most successful retrieval.

play13:14

It resulted in 5 mature eggs and 3 embryos.

play13:20

Two of them were five day or day five blastocysts and one

play13:25

of them was a day four morula.

play13:29

All average grades, so none of them are like fantastic looking, but still we

play13:36

were so thankful and just over the moon.

play13:39

Now after round six, I decided to just do one more round just because

play13:43

my plane ticket was like a month later and I just had the time.

play13:47

So why not?

play13:48

Honestly, for round seven, I kind of let myself go.

play13:52

I ate whatever I wanted.

play13:54

I went out and had fun and you know, I drank wine, I just

play13:59

did whatever I felt like.

play14:01

Quite frankly, I was pretty much done.

play14:04

I ended up getting three eggs that cycle and one four day..

play14:09

Or day four morula.

play14:11

That's kind of confusing.

play14:12

Day four morula.

play14:13

My hospital, they allow the embryo to grow as long as it can.

play14:20

They try to cultivate the embryos as long as they're holding steady and once they

play14:26

start to kind of slow down a little bit that's when they freeze them So that's

play14:30

the reason why I have several day fours.

play14:34

From my seven retrievals I I was able to get nine embryos, two of which I had

play14:41

to toss because they tested abnormal, but the rest of them are untested.

play14:47

I can't believe that I did that many retrievals.

play14:49

That's so insane.

play14:51

So that makes a grand total of seven embryos.

play14:56

I actually came back to the States back home to just kind of chill and

play15:01

relax for the holidays and just be with my husband for a little bit.

play15:06

I am going back to Korea next month for the transfer and

play15:10

so I'll keep you guys posted.

play15:12

If you have any advice on what to do before the transfer to prep your

play15:16

body or just get your mental state right before the transfer, I would

play15:23

love to hear it in the comments.

play15:24

Well, that's it for updates and if you want to see my story from the very

play15:30
