really good to be honest with you it's
been one of the highest level of people
around with knowledge um there's very
very a lot of high level people that
have turned up here for this event so
yeah it's really good it's not just SEO
it's quite a lot of business and traffic
diversity PPC as well and stuff like
that so yeah it's been really good event
true how do you how do you evaluate your
journey into SEO throughout the years
how how did I get into the SEO now how
do you
evaluate the the time you've spent in
SEO over the years cuz yeah I we'll get
to how you transition to SEO so how do I
viate my time within SEO yeah yeah yeah
yeah yeah so obviously there's one
there's one thing doesn't matter how
rich you are is one thing that we all
lack in life and that's time so you need
to be always checking to see whether
from a time management point of view the
time that you're putting into the time
that you're putting out is worth it
these networking events are pretty much
always worth it because you're always
going to take some knowledge some extra
connections and those connections that
you're going to get then that introduce
you to more connections then the other
connections that you're making are
Priceless so the um the evaluation of my
time is probably the most important time
especially know I've got kids and a wife
at home and stuff like I don't want to
be away all the time so i' got to try to
choose my battles correctly so you check
to see who's lining up who's speaking
who's attending and then from there then
um you decide whether is it worth
traveling Halfway Around the World to
come to the event and stuff like that
but the um it's you've got to when you
turn up as well you've got to have the
courage to be able to go and approach
people to be able to speak to him um and
this I think this event's been really
good in the fact that there's been a lot
of people that's
and and obviously spoken to myself and
said I need to tackle you for x y and
Zed or I need help in this so I feel
like the the attendees are becoming a
lot more confident in understanding that
we're approachable people we can help
them along the journey and then a lot of
time people over over complicate things
so if you can simplify it down into
trying to act like a real business as
best as you can try to make certain you
don't try and cut Corners um then long
term you always do pretty well yeah yeah
um so you haven't always been an SEO you
basically started off as a business
owner yeah you had a construction
company that's right yeah if I remember
correctly yeah so how did how did the
transition happened transition happened
um 16 years ago now and we built tennis
court tennis courts netball courts like
football pitches or in the US they call
it soccer pitches artificial kind of
rugby pictures and stuff like that and
it was mainly for schools colleges and
universities and then we needed inbound
leads ourself so we tried to understand
how to rank in Google and it was very
difficult for many years trying to
follow certain SEO programs and training
courses wasn't working for us or it was
taking a lot longer than what people
were saying um it talk so we had to
learn the hard way we had to keep trying
to break the ser and see how far we can
stretch it to see how many bat links do
you need how much content do you need um
and it's it's tough like it's too many
people that kind of make it sound a lot
simpler than what it is you need to
learn from the bottom and work your way
up and then once you know everything at
that point it's pretty easy but it's the
becoming it takes $10,000 to become an
expert in your field you need to put the
$1,000 hours in so we started out as
being a construction company we realized
we needed inbound leads we built a
website we started to rank the website
took a while a lot of failures along the
way then we built a second website a
third website a fourth website and then
from there then we um started to go into
what I call shouldering niches so like
fencing flood lighting Landscaping all
of the kind of industries that
complemented what we did so if we made
them busier indirectly it would make us
busier and that's how it grew I never I
never set out to be around Rank and rent
expert I never set out to be a lead
generation expert I never set out to be
an SEO expert I was just a businessman
that needed inquiries and then me having
that hat on of knowing the
importance of a consistent flow of
quality inquiries Landing in your inbox
I could resonate with other business
owners in a position where they had
great contractors great teams on site
they had great S A great sales team but
you have the best sales person in the
world and if they they've not got a
consistent flow of quality inquiries
they're not going to convert anything so
that resonated with me so I stayed in
that lane and I didn't really go down
the route of like display ads and
affiliate ads because I enjoy dealing
with real business owners I like talking
about return on investment that
motivates me in trying to get them to
get a return on investment where too
many people are obsessed by Impressions
and clicks and that means nothing if it
doesn't turn into profitability for your
customer
and we just want a proportion of the
profits so we don't want to charge them
Β£5,000 a month whether they rank or
don't Rank and this is what a lot of SEO
agencies do and I know that they need to
be charging that but it just doesn't sit
well with me that you I'm charging a
client 5,000 a month and you might not
get rankings yeah at least it's I can
guarantee it there's not many people in
this industry that can guarantee
anything but I can guarantee a return on
investment otherwise because they only
pay out the profits that they get so
it's a great business model for us it
means that the team is very happy
because our customers are very happy M
so it's a it's a great working
relationship and that's why I love what
do and what I do because generally
speaking you got a lot of dopamine kicks
because you're continuously getting
those little jumps in rankings or you
your clients are ringing up and giving
you praise and happy because they only
like I said they only pay out the
winnings so you get serotonin kind of
levels of like happiness you get the
dopamine kicks for the team you're high
fiveing each other it's a happy
environment so it works really well for
us yeah yeah at what point down the road
did you discover age domains expired
domains as a thing as a concept and how
big of a Kickstart did it give you when
you figured the thing out so that's a
great question because initially I found
Alex drew prior to even AIO Ys being
here right so we worked with Alex drew
for a long time with regards to
initially um for like pbns and stuff
like that back then where you'd build a
network of sites and you'd leverage the
power to link build to other sites to
get higher rankings so that's how it
initially was until we started to
realize that when we bought Alex's
demands that he was
catching we was writing content on those
sites and they was jumping in straight
away
outranking our money sites and we was
like wow this is strange because we
haven't got the topical Authority the
content probably didn't have as much
effort being put into is what we was
doing on our money sites we was building
links to our money site yet these age
demaines was outranking us so then we
quickly realized the power that was
involved in age demands over buying the
fresh demain no don't get wrong we do
enjoy like an an exact match domain from
time to time which is a fresh domain
which got key words in the um in in the
domain name but age demain just give you
a massive they just give you a head
start in life and like I said there's
one thing in life that we're all
struggling with and that's a lack of
time so for me that money that you can
spend can spend 10 15 20,000 on an age
demain that's going to save me 12 months
of optimization and growing well I'm
getting a huge return on investment on
that so when you start to look for
myself at a return on investment like I
want my clients to all day long I'm on
I'm on the age demain trade because I
want to save time and by Saving Time
indirectly I'm saving money yeah so so
for that reason it's brilliant um I've
always been a massive Advocate soon as
Alex set up OD Ys straight away I've
been telling people I'm just I'm just
honest like if if I didn't think OD was
good I won't be satting and I won't be
doing the interview with you of course
there there's some other domain venders
that are that asked me to do an
interview and I've said to be honest
with you I T to not do one and I don't
mean it in a nasty way it's just I
cannot say that their demands are good
because I've never bought the demands
and I don't need to buy the demands cuz
I know that your quality control is
unbelievable I know that when I'm
speaking to Alex that if I'm buying a
domain and I quite like the Branded like
name within within it and it's got links
I know you've already done your checks
to make certain it's a good demand and
that's why I don't go by in Go Daddy AR
and demands or TV Solutions demands or
what every other place that people spam
other demands I don't I don't want to
buy them because then I need to have a
team that can do quality control where
you guys have already done the hard work
you just come to me and say this is
Β£4,500
it's Β£2,000 it's Β£10,000 I can look at
it and go that is good value my my
prediction of this Β£10,000 site is
actually it should be 440,000 and for
that reason then I'm going to purchase
it if I don't think it's value I won't
but majority of the time I look at it
and go you guys you guys are too cheap
you underpriced like you should be a lot
more than where you are um and that's
why you've got a lot of loyal customers
because they're getting a good return on
investment and I think that's why you
got a lot of people consistently coming
back to
oys has been in my opinion the best the
main vendor that there is I'm not going
to go elsewh that's really nice to hear
from you so funny that you mentioned the
return on investment and investment as
such so what would you say to people who
think more like cost instead of
investment when it comes to whatever
digital property so anything that you
buy with regards to I would if I
wouldn't ask anybody to go and spend
money on bat links unless they genuinely
feel it's going to get a return on
investment why spend money on B links if
it's not going to get return on
investment if you buying a domain and
it's not if it's a a dr2 not that Dr
means everything but it's if a dr2 and
there's not many referring domains and
it's not a branded domain that you want
don't buy it but if it's got 500
referring domains and it's a dr40 and
it's relevant to your Niche when you
just look at the backlink profile itself
and you start looking that it's got
links from Telegraph off from BBC or
wherever it is we've got our own you
know scoring system with what we think
is a good domain and what isn't we then
work out our cost of if we bought that
domain brand new and we built those
links how much would that cost us and
this is where I say at times you guys
undervalue your demands in my opinion
like it's it's Β£10,000 and we're looking
at going that should be
47,000 so which which is great for
customers like me and great for others
don't go up in your price by the way um
but it it means that there's Great Value
within that that you you've got a a
website that's got the age got the it's
non- dropped it's got
47,000 worth of battling value yeah yeah
and you can make to 10,000 well for me
that's good value and I think everything
you should never look at anything to be
how much is it right with regards to
cost and being an expense it should
always be is this good value or not if
you spend Β£10,000 on a domain and it's
not good value don't do it again but if
you get Β£10,000 of a domain that you
think's got a Perce value of
47,000 well that's good business and
that's kind of what you do with anything
in life people pay more money for a
nicer hotel if they see the perceived
value of that hotel is worth
it that's what it generally comes don't
you yeah yeah uh I'm
just little
overwhelmed so uh you're a person who's
known to be like a very very outgoing
and helpful when it comes to companies
products
individuals like you're pretty much you
pretty much have the same approach to
them like you to to everything like you
just explain about like whatever we
invest in is like is it value if it's if
it's valuable just invest in it if it's
not just don't that's what you do with
your time and your attention you you
got yeah you got several apprentices who
are like part transferred to being
partners with you right so I
mean what makes you keep going this way
keeping teaching people around you and
even even people who are not around you
physically yeah right so it's important
I feel that to leave some sort of Legacy
about it's important to try and make
certain that you just do good for the
world and try to elevate others try to
make certain like I I started off down
the apprenticeship route initially
because I didn't have that much money
initially to be able to pay 40,000 a
year for someone that was experienced um
and and I took a couple of brenes on and
then I thought right I'll get a sales
manager sorry an SEO manager in and I
thought this SEO manager would run the
show and I started I think it was 45 and
pound a year um which is which is an all
right wage in the UK I won't say it's a
huge wage but it's an okay wage um and
they was taken on with a lot of
experience and they should have hit the
ground running and been able to train up
the two apprentices and go and the truth
of the matter is
that they was not good at all MH that
the the training that they had done was
from the wrong people MH that what they
perceived as being this is how you
ranking Google was not how you ranking
Google they wanted to shortcut
everything of what they did they just
thought that you could go and write
cheap content that actually didn't for
me back then I didn't understand content
optimization
properly I just understood what the user
and the customer would want to see and
and for
conversion going getting an article and
spinning it that when someone comes
through and looks at it and it's just
gobble the goo and it's just like
what even is this I'm not going to
inquire with this
company that's a bad user experience and
forget Google in anyway shape off on
which is a negative ranking Factor
you're not going to get the inquiries
even if someone does click onto the page
so from a conversion rate optimization
point of view think about the customer
think about the intent of the search
match that intent and you'll get better
conversion now that just all happens to
be an indirect ranking Factor as well
because once people clicking through to
your page and are converting it sends
those signals back to Google that people
had a good user experience on your s so
not only that like with like digital PR
and stuff if people come and visit your
site and it's a good
site some actual journalists and
reporters will naturally link to the
site if he spun content and it doesn't
look good they're not going to go
linking through to that site so give
value provide value to the customers and
and from that then we needed to train
the team up this way and there's so many
people some here even when I try to help
some of us here they they ask their
wrong questions of how can I create
shortcuts how can I do that in a faster
time and I'm like just do it right and
do it right for the customer do it right
for the user longterm you will win stop
trying to cut Corners stop buying cheap
links that are toxic right do everything
right and so when when the apprentices
started with us they was trained in that
way so they don't know any other way so
when this SEO manager came in and was
trying to cut Corners right he was like
this is not going to work and it's hard
to teach an old dog new tricks yeah
where this method I trained them up from
within they are absolutely engrained
into the system and the process and the
culture of how we set the business up so
when where when they're next training
the next people up it's you do not cut
Corners you've got to make certain if
you landed on that site that you would
inquire and think that they are a good
company for whatever it is that they're
looking for and if you don't feel that
you would inquire improve it forget how
well optimized it is improve the page
and then when I know that they're
trained up in that manner and I I'm like
this is not good enough I can sit down
with that person
saying would you would you put in an
inquiry form on that side if they saying
no I'll like well what have you done
that for CU you know the systems you
know the process you've had the training
so if you're saying no yet you've signed
that off we have a problem now okay I
see right so they have to follow the
process they have to live and Breathe by
the process and understand it not to cut
Corners where there a lot of people that
are business owners try to make saving
cost and try and cut corners to try and
do things faster and the complete
opposite because I want long-term longev
I also want to make certain that my
customers are making a return investment
so everything needs to be put in right
in place so I can sleep nice at night
knowing that things are going to work
long term it might take that a little
bit slower to get that upward trajectory
graph but things are going to work long
term and when the team would buy into
that they've now we've had six different
apprentices that have all become
directors of the business um people here
there's so many people here now that
have sold up for multiple Millions um
that if you going to speak to anyone of
them not every one of them but there's a
lot of them you going to speak to any
one of them and say who's been your best
Mentor within the digital marketing
space that's sold for a big sum I
guarantee I can name a dozen people out
there that have sold for 5 million plus
that will all say James has been the
person that's helped me because I tried
to cut corners try to save money on in
certain areas with staff and I actually
just wanted to build thing out right and
you actually end up getting a bigger
multiplayer as well because when the
people that are coming in vent
capitalist or angal investors come in
and they see everything working and it's
a Well arold machine you get a much
higher multiplier as well because you've
der risked it you've decentralized
everything you've got their own business
account for that specific business that
you've set up and I always say to Alex
you build businesses so every demain we
try to to do we try to separate it it's
a un business we've got a team in there
we can run kpis specifically on that
business and and then see what's working
and what's not a bit deeper than I
expected into that really appreciate
that so yeah but how long do you intend
to stay in this SEO game I'm me it
forever and the reason why I say that is
and I'm going to go quite deep here is
that
I've I've had a few friends close
friends in the industry that I've sold
up for 50 million plus mhm and they've
lost all purpose in life and one of them
committed suicide one of them took two
drugs and alcohol um I don't see many
people I'm being honest with you which
sounds pretty sad that reach their end
goal and when they reach the end goal
and the cell that after a few years have
all said I'm loving retirement mhm I
don't see that I don't see that they're
going drinking pean clader on the beach
and I'm the best time in the life I see
emptiness and when I've seen this happen
not just once not twice but several
times for people selling for numbers
that you can only ever dream about
selling for and at the end of it once
they've reached those goals they've just
got emptiness in their life and no
purpose in life that then tells me I
don't want an end go MH so when I don't
want an end go like I I probably don't
well I don't need to work another day
life I could have Stak and prawns every
single night my kids could have staken
prawns every single night but I don't
want to end go because I don't want that
feeling of emptiness so I will never
retire I'll I'll slow down maybe but
then I thought I'd slow down when I had
kids and if anything I've bought more
businesses than I ever have before so
will I slow down I don't know like if if
my body tells me to slow down I will
slow down if I want to do a 10hour work
week I'll do a 10-hour work week if I
want to do a sixday hour work week I'll
do a six hour work week I can choose how
many hours that I want to do week to
week I just seem to choose to work most
days because I enjoy working with the
people that I work with I I enjoy know
the business partners that I'm working
with if I don't like working with a
business partner I'll just go my own way
and go am it this is not working Vlad
you go that way I go that way and then
that's fine and I won't fall out about
it but we'll kind of go I want to work
with people that make many go many many
goals right and when you hit your Target
and you hit your goal and it could be
such a simple goal we high five each
other we get the dopamine kick and we go
we're going to go out and celebrate this
now whether that means going out for a p
and having a good time and going for a
party or whether that means a spa day
whatever it is that people want to do if
they don't drink and they want a spa day
or they want to go and take their wife
away for a weekend to celebrate those
mini wins that's what life is about it's
about enjoying the journey and
celebrating those many wins throughout
life CU then you can go and have a good
time and celebrate it people have too
high expectations and set the goals too
high and it said it takes years to get
there and those years of getting there
is not fun where if you just set the
little rung on the ladder to the next
rung on the ladder to the next rung on

moving up to get to that goal you you're

long as your demands are go obviously I
love you and I love Alex to Pieces but
if the demands and the quality started
dropping off I'd be saying what the hell
is going on I'm not going to shout out
from the rooftops that a Ys said the
best Dem man if they're not I genuinely
mean that they are unbelievable and
they're working well and there's
perceived value in it so keep doing what
you're doing keep the quality control if
it does drop obviously I'll sit down and
work with the quality controller team
and saying you're missing this this and
this but everything that you're doing at
present you always ask the right
questions Alex always ask the right
questions you're always seem to seek for
improvement and that's what we need to
do in today's Al the algorithms are
changing day by day you at most of these
events that you turn up to you you're
learning from the best in the world who
who are here and because of that you're
able to keep elevating and making
certain your quality control is the best
so it's a pleasure like working with you
guys because obviously you guys have
helped us Elevate to levels that we
never thought we could get to so it is a
