- In this video I'm going through 10 tips

play00:02

on how to get better footage with your smartphone gimbal.

play00:05

Now this video is sponsored by Zhiyun

play00:07

and this is their new Smooth Q2 gimbal.

play00:10

It's like a tiny little gimbal

play00:13

and I'm gonna go through a little bit about this gimbal

play00:15

at the end of the video, give you my review

play00:16

but I wanted to do 10 tips on how to get better footage

play00:20

and if you stick around till the end

play00:22

I'm gonna be giving one of you this gimbal.

play00:24

So let's get into it.

play00:26

(exciting tones)

play00:30

So the biggest problem when it comes to these small gimbals

play00:33

is how light the gimbal is.

play00:34

It's so easy to move this around.

play00:36

When you have a bigger gimbal with a bigger camera on it

play00:39

it's much easier to keep it steady.

play00:41

So when it comes to working with this gimbal

play00:43

you really have to focus in on a few things

play00:45

to keep the shot steady because if you're walkin' around

play00:48

and just having it go like this

play00:49

your footage is not gonna be very good.

play00:51

Guys, if you're new here to this channel

play00:52

my name is Jeven Dovey.

play00:53

I do filmmaking tutorials, I do product reviews,

play00:56

and also I do a lot of YouTube training style videos

play00:59

so make sure you hit that Subscribe button

play01:01

and turn on those bell notifications

play01:02

so you don't miss one of these videos (bell ding)

play01:05

and Rachel's arms are about to fall off

play01:06

so she's gotta put this down.

play01:07

- This is ridiculous.

play01:10

I did shoulders today.

play01:11

- Okay so the first tip is make sure

play01:13

that you're planning out your shots.

play01:16

One of the worst things you can do

play01:17

is just turn the gimbal on

play01:18

and kinda just spray everywhere and shoot everything.

play01:21

If you wanna have good looking footage

play01:23

then the key is actually planning

play01:25

and putting some thought behind each shot.

play01:28

So before you hit record

play01:29

think through where you're starting, where you're going,

play01:32

and where you're ending.

play01:33

So if you're doing a moving shot how big is the movement?

play01:36

How small is the movement?

play01:37

If you are filming a subject

play01:40

what is it specifically that you're looking for

play01:42

when you're filming that subject?

play01:43

Those kind of things

play01:44

are gonna help you create better looking footage.

play01:47

So plan out each shot.

play01:50

Tip number two is make sure you try to keep your gimbal

play01:52

on a level plane.

play01:54

So this is what I was talking about earlier.

play01:56

When your gimbal is light it's easy to move up and down

play01:59

all over the place.

play02:00

So the key with getting good footage

play02:02

is keeping it on a level plane.

play02:03

So really focus in on where your hand placement is

play02:07

and make sure it's in a good position

play02:08

that you can hold over a period of time

play02:10

'cause if you have that up and down motion

play02:13

what happens is it creates a bobble effect

play02:15

and this is really noticeable on the footage

play02:17

even with the stabilizers and everything in smartphones

play02:20

you'll see this up-and-down bobble.

play02:22

So the key is try to keep your hand on a single plane

play02:25

so that you have smooth, steady footage

play02:29

with everything that you're doing.

play02:31

All right so tip number three is body placement

play02:33

without moving your feet, and so what do I mean by this?

play02:36

This is something that I use all the time

play02:38

when I'm creating videos with gimbals.

play02:40

When you're moving, when you step

play02:42

there's more chances of the bobble happening,

play02:44

what I was talking about in the last tip.

play02:46

So if you plant your feet

play02:47

and you're focused on just moving your body

play02:51

from one side to the other

play02:53

then you can create a more steady shot

play02:55

than if you were to be walking 'cause when you walk

play02:58

there's more opportunity for the footage to kind of bobble

play03:01

because there's more things happening in your body.

play03:04

So if you shift from say left to right

play03:06

and just shimmy your legs

play03:08

you can get a pretty decent sized movement

play03:10

and you can get a really nice steady shot

play03:12

because you're just shimmying your weight

play03:14

and if you keep your gimbal on a level plane

play03:16

then that's when you get those really smooth shots.

play03:19

Now when it comes to this,

play03:20

when you get to that end point just push yourself

play03:22

as far as you can go before you tip

play03:24

and a lot of times I'll trip over myself

play03:26

because what happens is I move from one direction to another

play03:30

and I start at the farthest I can on one side

play03:33

and then shift my weight as far as I can the other way

play03:36

and then eventually you fall.

play03:38

So you kind of go with the furthest distance that you can

play03:40

without actually moving.

play03:42

Now tip number four comes

play03:43

when you actually need to start moving.

play03:45

So last tip I talked about body movement,

play03:47

now introduce some steps.

play03:49

There's a specific walk when it comes to creating

play03:51

better looking gimbal footage and the key sit low

play03:54

and kinda walk like a duck.

play03:56

So the idea is that you want your body,

play03:58

the mass of your body to be moving on a single plane

play04:02

just like your hand is moving on a single plane.

play04:05

So you're gonna have to find how low you have to go

play04:07

to kinda squat and move

play04:08

so that your body isn't moving up and down,

play04:10

your arm's not moving up and down.

play04:12

The less movement up and down you can make your body,

play04:15

your arm, all of that,

play04:16

the less bobble that you're going to get.

play04:18

So it kinda looks funny and you have to practice the step

play04:21

but if you just walk you're not gonna get good footage,

play04:24

you're gonna get bobbling footage.

play04:25

So you really need to sit a little bit lower

play04:28

and really put some emphasis in the way you walk.

play04:30

Now your body movements are super important

play04:33

and all of it plays together.

play04:34

The next tip comes down to how you're actually shooting.

play04:38

So think in terms of a bigger camera.

play04:41

So imagine that this tiny gimbal was a giant Red

play04:46

or something else like an Arri Alexa or something.

play04:49

How would you move that camera to get camera movement?

play04:51

You wouldn't swing it all over the place

play04:53

because it's so heavy.

play04:54

It's got big lenses, you've got lots of gear wrapped on it.

play04:57

So you would move it slowly with something like a dolly

play05:00

or you'd move like a jib or something like that.

play05:03

So the key is think of your camera as a bigger camera.

play05:06

What are the style of movements that you would make?

play05:09

So one of 'em might be just a dolly from left to right.

play05:12

Also, if you have like a selfie stick

play05:14

then you can mount this on the bottom

play05:16

and be able to do jib-like shots.

play05:18

That's the really cool thing about small gimbals

play05:21

is when you attack a stick to the bottom of the gimbal

play05:24

you can create these cool like arcing motions up and down

play05:27

and all over and you can really create

play05:29

some interesting-looking visuals.

play05:31

It works because you don't have to have some crazy huge jib,

play05:35

you don't have to have like a really heavy monopod.

play05:37

You can really use lightweight gear

play05:39

and be able to get some awesome footage

play05:41

and that wraps right into my 6th tip

play05:43

which is use extra gear around the gimbal.

play05:47

Gimbal is great but finding those extra pieces of gear

play05:49

that will enhance your shooting is key

play05:52

to getting some really dynamic-looking footage.

play05:55

So an extension pole,

play05:56

that is the way to go to get some good sweeping shots.

play05:59

If you're also shooting yourself

play06:01

you can get the gimbal further away, get a wider shot

play06:03

if you have like a selfie stick of some sort.

play06:06

So having that extra gear is really gonna help you

play06:09

create some really dynamic-looking footage

play06:11

and that wraps right into my next tip

play06:13

which is create dynamic shots.

play06:15

Now what do I mean by this?

play06:17

Put a couple of the movements together.

play06:18

So say you're walking forward while also put a pan down.

play06:22

So try to put two movements together

play06:26

to create more dynamic-looking footage.

play06:27

So a pan down and move forward looks better

play06:30

than just panning down or just moving forwards.

play06:33

So find ways where you can combine two different movements

play06:36

or two different things

play06:37

to create more dynamic-looking shots.

play06:40

So it might be coming out from behind a tree

play06:43

and then going over another tree or something like that.

play06:46

All right, I was just finishing up this video

play06:48

and there's one more thing I wanna talk about

play06:49

when it comes to dynamic shots

play06:50

and that is with the Smooth Q you can actually do vortex

play06:54

which is something that I haven't seen

play06:56

in a lot of these smaller gimbals.

play06:58

And so with the vortex mode

play06:59

you can create some interesting dynamic shots,

play07:01

find some ways to fit it into your projects

play07:03

to do something a little bit different.

play07:05

Now with the last tip, what I was saying

play07:07

is coming out from behind an object.

play07:09

This works great

play07:11

but you have to be using your manual settings

play07:13

otherwise the auto exposure's gonna kick in

play07:16

and the auto focus and so it's not gonna look as good

play07:19

as if you use everything manual.

play07:20

So there's different apps

play07:21

that you can get for your smartphone

play07:23

and you wanna set everything to manual

play07:26

and the reason for this

play07:27

is you don't want the exposure to auto fluctuate

play07:30

and the same thing with focus.

play07:31

You don't wanna focus on the object

play07:33

like right here in front of you

play07:34

and then it focuses away from you

play07:36

because that's not a very cinematic-looking shot.

play07:38

Rather, it would be great

play07:40

is something was out of focus in front,

play07:41

pops out all of a sudden this subject way in the distance

play07:44

is in focus.

play07:45

Now obviously with smartphones

play07:47

you don't have the super shallow depth of field

play07:49

but there is still focusing and exposure breathing

play07:51

when you're doing auto exposure and auto focus.

play07:55

So use manual modes.

play07:57

Okay number nine is create transitions using your gimbal.

play08:01

Your gimbal is a great tool

play08:03

to be able to create some unique, seamless transitions.

play08:06

Now one in particular that I like

play08:07

is going from behind an object

play08:09

and then popping out with a different shot

play08:11

when you come out on the other side.

play08:13

So for example I have a tree here, Rachel's walking,

play08:16

I have a wide shot, I'm gonna pan across,

play08:18

all of a sudden I'm now down at her feet

play08:19

and this is just a simple transition

play08:21

that you can do in your editing software.

play08:23

Just key framing a mat across your footage,

play08:26

cutting out one footage and key frame it across

play08:28

as the wipe happens.

play08:30

Now if you wanna know more about some seamless transitions

play08:33

I'll put links in the description

play08:34

to some other videos that I have done

play08:36

that are all about seamless transitions

play08:37

but gimbals are a great way

play08:38

to create these seamless transitions

play08:40

because when you're moving and it's super smooth

play08:43

you can create some cool effects

play08:45

going from one shot to another.

play08:46

Another easy one is put the gimbal in POV mode

play08:49

and just wipe it.

play08:49

So you're moving smooth in one direction

play08:52

and then you wipe to the left or to the right,

play08:54

do the same motion into the next shot,

play08:56

got an awesome transition.

play08:58

Super easy to use.

play08:59

And my final tip and this goes without saying

play09:02

but practice makes perfect.

play09:04

So the only way to get good at getting better gimbal footage

play09:08

is to shoot gimbal footage.

play09:09

So get out there, practice a ton,

play09:12

and you will be able to get some awesome-looking footage.

play09:14

Okay so let's talk about the Zhiyun Smooth Q2.

play09:18

So I've been playing around with this gimbal

play09:19

for a little while, I've had it for about a week now.

It's an interesting little gimbal for sure, I like it.

play09:25

Now at first I thought it was gonna be a little too simple

play09:28

but sometimes the simplest things are the best

play09:31

because when you're working with a gimbal

play09:32

you don't always need

play09:33

like all these crazy bells and whistles,

play09:35

especially when it comes to a smartphone gimbal.

play09:37

In reality when I use a gimbal

play09:39

I pull it out and I either use it in tilt walk mode,

play09:42

follow mode, lock mode, or POV mode

play09:44

depending on if I'm doing transitions or not

play09:46

and what's really cool about the Zhiyun Smooth Q2

play09:49

is that it's very simple.

play09:51

So on the back here you only have three buttons.

play09:54

You have your power button, you have your joystick,

play09:56

and you also have your record button.

play09:58

Now what's really cool with the record button

play10:00

is you don't have to link your phone

play10:02

to get the record to work.

play10:03

So right now I'm just in the Moment app.

play10:05

I click the record button and it starts recording

play10:07

using that app.

play10:08

So like I said, super simple, easy to use.

play10:10

You can use the record with any app that you're in

play10:12

and it just seems to signal to your phone,

play10:14

which is a great feature for sure.

play10:16

Now also it's super small

play10:18

so you just have to really focus on your shots

play10:20

like I've been talking about in this video.

play10:22

However, this thing can fit in your pocket,

play10:24

fit in your bag, it's great.

play10:26

Now the last thing that's kind of interesting

play10:28

about this gimbal is that it does have it's own plate.

play10:31

So if you wanted to leave this on your phone

play10:33

and then take this off you can and pop it back on.

play10:37

Interesting feature,

play10:38

I haven't really seen a smartphone gimbal

play10:39

with a plate system like this.

play10:41

So something unique about the Zhiyun Smooth Q2.

play10:44

So guys if you want to win this Gimbal

play10:47

I'll put a link down below in the Description

play10:49

play10:51

play10:53

play10:56

play10:57

play10:59
