How to Say "I Don't Know" During an Instructional Design Interview
Summary

Outlines

Highlights
The video discusses handling moments in an instructional design or e-learning development job interview where you don't know the answer to a question.
Tim Slade from the e-learning designers Academy shares his personal experiences and tips on dealing with such interview situations.
The fear of public speaking and interviews often leads to trying to script out everything, which can backfire and make one feel inauthentic.
The key realization is that the fear stems from looking like you don't know what you're talking about, rather than the fear of saying the wrong thing.
Learning to be okay with saying 'I don't know' is crucial to move past the fear and focus on what you do know.
Interviewers often ask situational questions to evaluate your judgment and thinking process, not just your experience.
Confidently admitting your lack of experience can create cognitive dissonance in the interviewer's mind, making your honesty stand out.
Shifting the conversation to your judgment and thinking, even when you lack experience, allows you to showcase your problem-solving abilities.
Asking the interviewer about their process can transform the interview from an interrogation to a two-way conversation.
Being open and honest about your experience or lack thereof can be more beneficial than trying to fake expertise.
The video provides advice on confidently saying 'I don't know' during an interview and turning it into an opportunity to share your knowledge and approach.

Transcripts
so let me ask you this have you ever
been asked a question during an
instructional design or e-learning
development job interview that you just
didn't know the answer to or maybe you
got asked about some experience that you
didn't actually have experience with
what did you do in those moments and
what's the right way to say I don't know
without panicking and sounding like a
total well that's what we're going
to talk about in this video so stick
[Music]
around
hey there folks Tim slate here from the
e-learning designers Academy you know if
you're anything like me I used to be a
total nervous wreck when it came to
interviews in fact I used to have this
horrible fear of public speaking in
general whatever the context was
whatever the situation was if I was in a
position of having to speak
authoritatively authora authoritatively
about something whether it was during an
interview or giving a presentation I
find myself getting all sweaty and
stumbling over my words and you know
overthinking the whole thing and I don't
know about you but back then I thought
the answer to that was trying to script
out everything that I was going to say
so that when it came time to say it all
I could just repeat what I had scripted
but of course that only made things so
much worse because you know in the
effort of trying to memorize and make
sure I said everything the right way
when I originally scripted it it just
left me feeling like a mumbling buffoon
you know what I'm talking about I know
you do well you know what I eventually
realized was that my fear wasn't about
trying to say the exact right thing in
the exact right way that I wanted to say
it it was more about my fear of looking
like I didn't know what I was talking
about and so what I discovered for
myself was that I needed to learn how to
be okay with saying I don't know so that
I could get past that and then
ultimately talk about the things that I
really did know about and I share all of
that because it's an important lesson
that can apply when you're interviewing
for an instructional design or
e-learning development job and you get
asked a question that you're not sure
about or when you get asked to share
your experience about a thing that maybe
you don't actually have experience with
and the truth is we've all been there
haven't we I mean I know you can think
of a time when you were asked that one
question that ultimately stumped you and
rather than collecting yourself and
responding thoughtfully you decided to
wing it rambling on and fake your way
through that answer now that you know
horribly embarrassing moment decides to
pop in your mind randomly when you're
trying to fall asleep at night and you
have to relive that moment over and over
and over again you know into eternity
right I know you know what I'm talking
about because we all have those moments
that we think about you know but the
problem with that the problem with you
know trying to fake your way through an
answer is that It ultimately makes you
look inauthentic and it makes you look
scattered and it makes you look like
you're just trying to pull some good
out of your ass that will hopefully
convince the hiring manager that you're
you know someone that they want to hire
and so you know the question becomes how
can you say I don't know and still feel
confident about yourself in the answer
answer you provide well you know what It
ultimately comes down to remembering
that when a hiring manager asks a
question let's say a situational
question like tell me about a time when
you had to conduct a needs analysis or
you know something like that you know
what they're not really necessarily
asking about or they're not asking you
to quantify your experience with
conducting needs analyses instead what
they really are trying to evaluate is
your judgment your thinking and your
process for conducting a needs analysis
whether or not you've ever actually done
one and so let's say you get asked that
very question tell me about a time when
you had to conduct a needs analysis but
you've never actually done one before
well you know what instead of making
something up the correct answer is to
say you know what I've never had the
opportunity to conduct a complete needs
analysis like that before but I spent
the last several months researching and
learning about needs analyses and here's
how I would approach one and then you
explain you're thinking from there you
see an answer like that does a couple of
things for you first you're confidently
stating I don't know or in this example
that I don't have the experience and
what that does is it creates some
cognitive dissonance in the mind of the
hiring manager and why is that well
because a they're not expecting you to
outright admit your lack of experience
and B they're certainly not expecting
you to say it with confidence and the
good thing about that is that once
you've gotten past the hard part of
admitting your lack of experience in
this particular example the second thing
that lets you do is it lets you shift
the conversation to to your judgment and
thinking about needs analyses or
whatever it is that they're asking about
and that's ultimately the thing that the
Hing manager wants to know and if you
want to put a cherry on top of that
after you admit that you don't know or
that you don't have the experience and
you continue with your thoughts about
whatever it is that they've asked about
let's say conducting a needs analysis
the perfect segue is to follow up and
ask the hiring manager what their
process looks like for conducting a
needs analysis and just by asking that
one small question you shifted the
interview away from feeling like an
interrogation to a two-way conversation
all right so that's my advice on how to
confidently say I don't know during an
instructional design or e-learning
development interview remember it's okay
to say I don't know and it's okay to say
I've never done that before it's okay to
be open and honest about your experience
or lack of experience but use it as an
opportunity to share what you do know or
to share how you would approach a
specific situation or how you've beening
to prepare for that new opportunity
trust me it'll get you much further than
just trying to you know fake it so
here's what I want to know what other
tips would you share about how to
confidently say I don't know during an
interview share your thoughts question
