Have you ever wondered why someĀ people are really amazing at publicĀ Ā
speaking? While other people simply put youĀ to sleep the second they open their mouth?
Look the reason may be this... voiceĀ modulation! Voice modulation basically meansĀ Ā
controlling and adjusting the sound of your voiceĀ as you're speaking. Using better voice modulationĀ Ā
means you're able to communicateĀ your message much more effectively.Ā Ā
Without voice modulation you wouldĀ sound boring and monotonous. In thisĀ Ā
video today i'll be sharing with you four easyĀ tricks that famous speakers and radio hostsĀ Ā
use to modulate their voices duringĀ their public speaking presentationsĀ
[Music]
Hi I'm Elisa James founder of the voiceĀ of confidence public speaker training andĀ Ā
I help people from all over the world speak withĀ clarity confidence and competence. Now regardlessĀ Ā
of whether you speak english as a second languageĀ or you're a native english speaker, if you're notĀ Ā
using effective voice modulation techniques youĀ won't be an effective public speaker at all.Ā Ā
So today we're going to dive into a reallyĀ simple four-step rule that all radio DJ'sĀ Ā
use to keep their audiences captivatedĀ it's called, high, low, fast, slow!
Let's start with number one, high. When youĀ change the pitch to a higher pitch when speakingĀ Ā
it sounds much more exciting and engagingĀ than a lower pitch. To show you what IĀ Ā
mean listen to this sentence in aĀ low pitch and then a high pitch.Ā Ā
"I am super excited to be here today" [Crickets]Ā
Let's try a higher pitch "I'm superĀ excited to be here today !"[Applause]
Now you feel and hear the excitementĀ in my voice with the higher pitch. YouĀ Ā
can immediately see how powerful the higherĀ pitch becomes with some sentences that requireĀ Ā
action, excitement and passion. The sound ofĀ passion and excitement can be easily heardĀ Ā
when someone is raising their pitch becauseĀ that's what we actually do when we are excitedĀ Ā
we raise our pitch. So try readingĀ or speaking a sentence out loudĀ Ā
in a lower pitch and then a higher pitch so youĀ can actually hear the difference for yourself.
Number two, low. Many radio and tv presentersĀ especially news readers use a very lowĀ Ā
pitch to convey authority and a very seriousĀ tone of voice, we as listeners actually expectĀ Ā
people in the media to sound like that because itĀ conveys confidence simply by lowering the pitch.Ā Ā
Here's a sentence spoken in twoĀ ways so you can hear the differenceĀ Ā
for yourself. Here it is in a high pitched tone.Ā "Now I really want you to pay attention to this,Ā Ā
this is super important" [silence]Ā
And here it is again in a low pitched tone.Ā "Now I really want you to pay attention to thisĀ Ā
because it's super important!" [applause]
You can see that the first one soundedĀ a bit too high and flippant and it won'tĀ Ā
really grab people's attention so much butĀ the lower version really sounds like I meanĀ Ā
business! This simple trick is so easy to do andĀ people really respond to these lower directivesĀ Ā
with respect because you sound like an authorityĀ simply by lowering the pitch. Number three,Ā Ā
fast. When you want to create excitement andĀ action in your audience the easiest way is toĀ Ā
speak a sentence or two faster. It sounds excitingĀ and engaging and when done correctly it will beĀ Ā
super clear as well . Now where people go wrongĀ with this is by thinking that speaking their wholeĀ Ā
presentation at a fast pace will actuallyĀ make it more interesting this is not true.Ā Ā
If you speak out something very fast it willĀ be impossible for your audience to keep up,Ā Ā
so instead what I want you to do is this. ChooseĀ certain sentences in your speech that could beĀ Ā
ramped up with energy and enthusiasm and speedĀ up that sentence only, then stop. Pause, then theĀ Ā
audience can assimilate the information they justĀ heard if you don't give them that pause they mayĀ Ā
not understand what you said at all and they'llĀ spend their time thinking trying to catch up.
Number four, slow. During a speakingĀ presentation using a slower pace for aĀ Ā
really important piece of information will makeĀ the message land more powerfully in the earsĀ Ā
of the listener by slowing down certainĀ points of tricky or complicated contentĀ Ā
it'll make it much easier for your audienceĀ to really grasp the concept that you'reĀ Ā
talking about. Here's a sentence spoken far tooĀ fast for the message to be clearly understood.Ā Ā
"Business analysts also known as BA'sĀ help to define business problems viaĀ Ā
in-depth investigation and gathering ofĀ technical and non-technical information"
What?!?! Let's try it again slowly.Ā Ā
"Business analysts also known as BA's help toĀ define business problems by in-depth investigationĀ Ā
and gathering of technicalĀ and non-technical information"
So you can see how important it is if you'reĀ going to speed up, leave a pause some thingsĀ Ā
need to be slowed down if it's really important.Ā So you can see how very important the high lowĀ Ā
fast slow rule is now that you know it you canĀ go home and do some practice for yourself. That'sĀ Ā
it today remember the four keys to simple butĀ effective voice modulation is high low fast slow.
