Stop Hitting Behind The Ball
Summary
TLDRIn this video, a golf expert addresses the common issue of hitting behind the ball in golf. He explains that the golf swing should follow a circular sequence, emphasizing the importance of body movement during the swing. By using the 'left-right-left' drill, golfers can ensure they are positioned correctly at the transition point, preventing the club from lagging and thus avoiding the tendency to hit behind the ball. This approach corrects the traditional advice of swinging up and stopping, which often leads to an out-of-sequence swing and subsequent poor contact with the ball.
Takeaways
- ποΈ Al, a fitness icon and golf enthusiast, is struggling with hitting behind the ball.
- β³ The golf swing is a circular motion that needs to be executed with proper sequence.
- π Al's issue is that his upper body shifts too much to the right during the backswing, causing an imbalance.
- πΆ Al's transition to his left side is too slow, leading to hitting behind the ball.
- βοΈ The 'left-right-left' drill is essential for maintaining proper balance and timing during the swing.
- ποΈββοΈ The correct sequence involves moving weight from the left foot to the right foot and back to the left foot before swinging.
- β±οΈ Proper timing ensures the swing circle moves forward, allowing the club to hit the ball before the ground.
- π A common mistake is pausing at the top of the backswing, which leads to an out-of-sequence downswing.
- π The key is to keep the body moving in sequence, allowing the arms to naturally follow and accelerate the club.
- π― Reaching the transition point in the swing should align with the body's movement to avoid hitting behind the ball.
Q & A
What is the main issue Oliver is facing with his golf swing according to the transcript?
-Oliver is hitting behind the ball because his upper body is shifting too far to the right side during the backswing and he is not getting to his left side soon enough during the transition.
What is the correct sequence of a golf swing as described in the transcript?
-The correct sequence is to go left, right, and then left again as you swing, ensuring that the body moves to the left side before the club reaches the transition point.
Why is it important to follow the left-right-left sequence during a golf swing?
-Following the left-right-left sequence is important because it ensures that the golfer is in the correct position at the transition point, preventing the club from getting ahead of the body and avoiding hitting behind the ball.
What common mistake did the transcript mention that golfers make during their swing?
-A common mistake is stopping at the top of the swing and then trying to transition down, which often results in the shoulders and arms moving down before the body has shifted to the left side, causing the golfer to hit behind the ball.
What advice is given to correct the issue of hitting behind the ball?
-The advice given is to practice the left-right-left drill, focusing on the body's movement and ensuring the body is in the correct position before the club reaches the transition point.
What is the transition point in a golf swing, and why is it significant?
-The transition point is when the club is moving from the backswing to the downswing. It is significant because it is the moment when the body should be correctly positioned to avoid hitting behind the ball.
Why is it difficult for many golfers to stop at the top of their swing and then transition correctly?
-It is difficult because stopping at the top disrupts the natural sequence of the swing, making it hard to transition smoothly and often leading to an incorrect body position and hitting behind the ball.
What is the role of the arms in the left-right-left drill as described in the transcript?
-In the left-right-left drill, the arms are not actively doing anything; they just follow the body's movement, swinging and accelerating as the body moves left-right-left.
What is the typical reaction of golfers when they hit behind the ball, as mentioned in the transcript?
-When golfers hit behind the ball, they often panic and either lean forward to try to hit the ball or swing in a way that results in a poor contact point.
How can practicing the left-right-left drill help improve the golf swing?
-Practicing the left-right-left drill helps golfers to establish the correct body movement sequence, which in turn improves the timing and positioning during the swing, reducing the chances of hitting behind the ball.
What is the purpose of the drill mentioned in the transcript, and how does it relate to the golf swing?
-The purpose of the drill is to help golfers understand and practice the correct sequence of body movement in the golf swing. It emphasizes the importance of body positioning and timing to prevent hitting behind the ball.
Outlines
ποΈββοΈ Golf Swing Sequence Correction
The video script discusses a common golf swing issue with the help of a friend, Oliver, who is a fitness icon and golf enthusiast. Oliver was hitting behind the ball due to a poor swing sequence. The issue was identified as a lack of proper transition from the backswing to the downswing. Instead of shifting to the left side in time, Oliver's upper body would shift to the right, causing him to start the downswing too late, which resulted in hitting behind the ball. The solution presented is the 'left-right-left' drill, emphasizing the correct sequence of the golf swing, which is to shift weight to the left foot, then to the right, and finally back to the left as the swing moves forward. This drill helps golfers to avoid the common mistake of swinging up to the top and stopping, which disrupts the natural sequence of the swing and often leads to hitting behind the ball.

this question or comment comes from my
old buddy Oliver meal
Al has been a great friend of mine for
years this guy's icon in the fitness
industry and he's a Golf Nut and now
it's great to have you on the site and I
love your questions and even your
comments and he made a comment he sent
me a video and he says God I keep
hitting behind everything
he says why am I hitting behind it well
again your golf swing is a circle all
right and so what we did with Al is he
was set up to the ball and he'd make his
back swing and he'd kind of go back to
his right side his whole upper body
would shift and he'd get way back here
and everything was stock stopped here
then he tried to move up to his left
side as he was coming down
but see he didn't get to his left side
soon enough so what would happen is the
club got here and now he'd start to go
well boom now you hit behind it
so we did the left right left where you
go left right left and swing this is a
really important drill because this is
the sequence of a golf swing
so you basically go you put weight in
your left foot or Force right foot left
foot and swing
so what I'm doing here is I go left
right left so the club is going back and
I go left
so when the club gets to the transition
point which is right there I'm already
up to my left side
so now my swing Circle moves forward so
I catch the ball then the ground
the big problem in this game for all of
us including me was when they told us
swing up to the top stand on this foot
and stay there and then once you get
there and you're stable now go ahead and
swing
you're so out of sequence when you do
that very few people were able to swing
up to the top stop and then transition
correctly what would happen is we would
all swing here and stop and the first
move we would make down is we'd start
down with our shoulders
so all of a sudden your shoulders and
your arms get clear down to here and you
haven't even come close to getting to
your left side
so now all of a sudden you panic and you
you're this way you hit behind it or we
would Lean Forward on it to try to hit
it so when you're practicing this hole
if you watch what I'm doing here if you
just take a club and you swing it out in
front of you and you let your body turn
a little and you go left
right left swing
left right left swing see so my arms
aren't doing anything
so I go left right left and as I keep
going what do my arms do they just swing
and accelerate because my body's going
left right left swing
so when you see somebody when you see
the top of their swing that's the
transition point of the club
that's not the transition point of their
bodies
see all these guys get to their right
side really early and they get to their
left sides really early as they swing
down if you do that you're not going to
hit behind it as Al found out
