to the Next Generation of CarPlay design system.

play00:14

Specifically, we’re going to dive into the extensive customization features

play00:18

that empower automakers,

play00:19

in partnership with our team here,

play00:21

to tailor the look and functionality of CarPlay to each vehicle.

play00:25

That means if you’re a designer in the auto industry, this talk’s for you!

play00:29

If that’s not you but you’re curious, stick around anyway,

play00:32

this’ll be an exciting look into the future of CarPlay.

play00:36

It’s the best of iPhone and the best of your car together in a unified,

play00:41

consistent experience across all of the driver’s displays.

play00:45

One that’s familiar where it matters,

play00:47

yet new, beautiful, and unique to your vehicle.

play00:51

In particular today, we’ll focus on one of the most exciting

play00:54

and expressive new areas: the instrument cluster.

play00:59

In this session you’ll learn how gauge designs are customized for each automaker,

play01:04

how they support unique instrument cluster layouts

play01:08

and how to surface all kinds of iOS and vehicle content

play01:11

in the driver display, and beyond.

play01:15

Most of all though, we hope that you’re inspired

play01:18

to imagine what your own experience might look like.

play01:22

This session is focused on design, but for a more technical look under the hood,

play01:26

make sure to check out the companion talk

play01:29

“Meet the Next Generation of CarPlay Architecture”

play01:31

by my colleague Tanya Kancheva.

play01:35

Before we get into the details, let’s talk about how we got here.

play01:39

It’s pretty simple really,

play01:40

cars have changed a lot since CarPlay first launched.

play01:44

Screens are becoming larger and we’re seeing more of them.

play01:47

For example, screens are quickly replacing the analogue instrument cluster

play01:51

and it’s not hard to understand why,

play01:53

with all the fantastic new features and functions todays vehicles have.

play01:57

There’s a ton of exciting and creative new configurations

play02:00

hitting the road every year.

play02:02

Well, at WWDC in 2022,

play02:05

we first teased this Next Generation of CarPlay.

play02:09

It provides content for all those driver’s screens,

play02:12

for an experience that’s unified and consistent.

play02:15

Drivers will have the choice between CarPlay

play02:17

or this experience that is the very best of your car and your iPhone.

play02:21

And the truth is, the default design for Next Generation CarPlay in your vehicle

play02:26

will look very different to this or any other car out there.

play02:29

Introducing the powerful new design system

play02:32

at the heart of the Next Generation of CarPlay!

play02:36

It’s built from the ground up to be deeply customizable.

play02:40

It’s designed to adapt to any vehicle drivetrain,

play02:43

feature set, and configuration.

play02:46

One screen or many, big screens or small, and any screen in between

play02:50

but most importantly for todays topic,

play02:52

to look beautifully on-brand, for your brand.

play02:55

It enables you to express your own visual design philosophy within CarPlay,

play02:59

to create an iconic, individual look

play03:02

tailored to you, your vehicles, and their unique functions.

play03:06

The result won’t just look like Apple.

play03:08

And it also won’t just look like a copy of the built-in system.

play03:12

It’s designed to be a unique celebration of the both brands

play03:16

a special co-branded experience

play03:17

only when your vehicle and iPhone come together,

play03:20

and it reflects a great deal of hard work we’ve done

play03:22

with automakers all over the world to innovate the in-car experience.

play03:27

At the heart of this co-branded experience is the driver display.

play03:32

In this section we’ll take a closer look at what’s possible,

play03:35

and how automakers, in partnership with Apple,

play03:37

can make Next Generation CarPlay instruments your own.

play03:41

Let’s start with Typography.

play03:44

We use our SF family of typefaces for a number of reasons,

play03:47

but foremost among them,

play03:49

because they are a special type of font called a variable font.

play03:53

Our variable fonts allow qualities like weight

play03:57

and width

play03:58

both extended and condensed

play04:01

as well as the softness of the corners

play04:03

to all exist on a continuous scale, as you’ve just seen.

play04:07

We’re not limited to the standard “light”, “regular”,

play04:10

or “bold” options of traditional fonts.

play04:13

Instead, any point between any of these qualities

play04:15

can be selected, providing a huge range of stylistic options.

play04:19

We’ve built the rest of the system with the same logic in mind.

play04:23

So when designing your unique instrument cluster,

play04:26

you don’t have to choose from a limited set of pre-determined configurations.

play04:30

For example, here we have something very light and elegant.

play04:34

But what if you’re looking for something a little bolder?

play04:37

Well as you might expect, along with typography,

play04:40

Next Generation CarPlay allows you

play04:42

to customize the width of elements in the gauge,

play04:44

as well as the softness of the corners.

play04:47

Or sharpness, if you prefer.

play04:50

Hard to argue that this isn’t looking bold and graphic now.

play04:54

Circular gauges let you decide the arc of the gauge too,

play04:57

as well as it’s start and end points.

play05:00

We’ve used this feature here to extend the gauge into a full circle

play05:04

and double down on its geometric silhouette,

play05:06

as well as adjusting the position of the fuel gauge to accommodate.

play05:11

Of course, you can choose the color of the gauges too.

play05:13

This blue for example nicely softens the impact of that bold gauge,

play05:17

and helps with overall hierarchy.

play05:20

Let’s add another color into the fuel gauge for a little more variety.

play05:25

Of course, you’re not just limited to flat colors either.

play05:27

Gradients are a fantastic way to add nuance and dimension.

play05:31

And if you wanted to really hero that gradient,

play05:34

we can simply expand the width of the stroke all the way to the center.

play05:38

Not too bad, we’re getting somewhere now.

play05:42

But let’s move the type into our secondary position

play05:44

so that we can see the gradient even more.

play05:47

We’ve arrived at something both contemporary and elegant,

play05:50

with a little bit of an homage to a classic gauge needle.

play05:54

But what if you actually want an analog needle?

play05:56

Well, we have that option too.

play05:59

And while we’re speaking of iconic gauge cluster elements,

play06:02

what design system would be complete without tick marks?

play06:06

The number of ticks, their length, style and their position are all customizable.

play06:11

You can even have multiple sets of ticks

play06:14

if you’re looking to create something really technical.

play06:17

For now, let’s go with something more classic for the ticks

play06:20

and add some numbers as well, to complete the look.

play06:25

Hopefully, this has given you a sense of the simple mechanics

play06:27

behind the gauge styling system,

play06:29

and a taste of the flexibility and creativity they enable.

play06:35

And that’s really just scratching the surface,

play06:37

when you start layering these techniques, almost anything’s possible.

play06:42

Of course,

play06:43

this is all in service of creating that beautiful co-branded experience,

play06:48

and while we’ve had a blast in the Apple Design Studio here

play06:50

developing and testing the system,

play06:52

the best part is when we get to work together with you

play06:55

you to create something that’s new and exciting for both of us.

play06:59

The Next Generation of CarPlay is not just limited to circular gauges either:

play07:03

we have a host of other components too, with even more styles on their way.

play07:08

As you’ve seen, this system is deeply customizable and adaptable.

play07:13

It enables a wide range of gauge styles from traditional to modern,

play07:17

a highly flexible typography system,

play07:20

geometries for different line treatments and tick choices,

play07:23

a palette of colors to reflect your brand and much more.

play07:28

Next, let’s take a look at some of the functions

play07:30

that you’re unique gauge style is capable of.

play07:34

We’ve worked hard to ensure that no matter the style of the gauge,

play07:37

it will support all the functionality and features you need,

play07:40

in a way that's logical and consistent.

play07:43

To demonstrate how our gauges adapt their functions to different styles,

play07:46

we’re going to show a side by side here as we talk about a few common functions.

play07:51

On the left we have a minimalist, linear style gauge in light mode,

play07:55

and on the right we have a more technical circular style, shown here in dark mode.

play08:00

In our system, the Speedometer is always paired with a fuel gauge,

play08:04

or state of charge gauge like we have here,

play08:06

depending on the type of powertrain.

play08:10

Ok, let’s start our drive.

play08:13

If the driver activates cruise control,

play08:15

the target speed is marked on the gauge with a dot,

play08:18

and the set speed shows as text adjacent to that dot.

play08:22

For vehicles with adaptive cruise control,

play08:24

when the vehicle is not traveling at the target speed.

play08:26

For example, if the car ahead slows down,

play08:29

a line is drawn between the current speed and the target speed

play08:32

to provide a glanceable representation that the adaptive cruise control system

play08:36

will return to the target speed when it can.

play08:40

The color of the cruise control UI changes based on state,

play08:43

and is customizable to suit the color scheme of the gauge style.

play08:49

There is also support for speed limiter which shows as a simple line,

play08:52

in contrast to the cruise control dot.

play08:55

It also takes on a different color.

play08:58

Near the current speed readout, we like to reserve a space for road signage

play09:02

as well as alternate units for speed, should they be required.

play09:07

Of course we also support all the states you would expect,

play09:10

like low remaining charge or fuel, in orange and critical in red.

play09:15

The point at which these states show up is defined by you.

play09:20

Beyond the speedometer,

play09:21

the Next Generation of CarPlay has support

play09:23

for secondary gauges for any type of powertrain you might like to display

play09:28

like these tachometers for a combustion engine,

play09:30

paired here with a secondary gauge for engine coolant temperature

play09:34

and complete with options for the various markings and states you’d expect

play09:38

like current gear for manual drive modes,

play09:40

redline, and arrows for recommended gear changes.

play09:45

If your vehicle is electric, the same is true for power meters.

play09:49

We retain common elements like drive mode and transmission state.

play09:53

But we have affordances for EV unique things like boost

play09:57

as well as regenerative breaking.

play10:00

We even have hybrid gauges for automakers that wish to show

play10:04

both a power meter and a tachometer at the same time.

play10:07

In these examples,

play10:08

the electric component is emphasized by the thicker part of the gauge

play10:11

with the combustion shown in parallel in a more compact format.

play10:17

In circular gauges you can even swap out the transmission state for an image,

play10:21

should you prefer to showcase your brand, or a particular trim level.

play10:26

So there you have it,

play10:27

once you've customized your gauge style,

play10:29

you can be sure that it will work in all the ways you expect.

play10:32

Whether it’s cruise control,

play10:34

speed limiter, or road signage in the speedometer

play10:37

drive mode, transmission state, or redline in the tachometer

play10:42

boost and regenerative breaking in a power meter,

play10:45

hybrids of both combustion and electric,

play10:48

and secondary gauges like engine coolant temperature.

play10:52

In fact there’s even more than we have time to share today.

play10:55

We’re excited to continue expanding the functionality in Next Generation CarPlay

play10:59

to ensure that it supports anything you need.

play11:02

Now that we have a gauge style picked out,

play11:04

it’s time to build a layout by combining a few different types of gauges.

play11:09

Of course, there are a few requirements when it comes to building a layout;

play11:13

current speed and fuel level for example, are mandatory.

play11:17

But as we touched on a moment ago,

play11:19

other gauges like a power meter or a tachometer are completely voluntary.

play11:24

If they feel appropriate, we have all the options we’ve just discussed and more.

play11:29

But if something less instrumentation focused

play11:31

is more fitting in your vehicle or configuration, that works too.

play11:36

It’s all thanks to our modular layout system.

play11:39

Let’s take a look.

play11:41

Each gauge is constructed as a self contained, modular component.

play11:46

These components form the basis of the layout system.

play11:49

They are resizable so you can fine tune them to your preference,

play11:53

or to best fit your particular hardware size and shape.

play11:57

The real fun though is in assembling different types of gauges

play12:00

into different configurations.

play12:02

This brings a whole other layer of customization to the instrument cluster.

play12:07

For example,

play12:08

by combining this circular center gauge with some minimal linear gauges,

play12:12

we can create something simple and sleek like this.

play12:15

Or, we can create an entirely different impression by swapping those components

play12:20

for these information rich, multi-gauge options.

play12:23

Here we’ve also added tick marks to our gauge style

play12:26

to add to the technical feel.

play12:29

This modularity also means you can layout information

play12:32

in whatever position makes sense for your brand, hardware configuration,

play12:35

feature set, or ergonomic preference.

play12:39

And on top of all this

play12:41

or underneath it, to be more accurate

play12:43

you can also add your own custom wallpapers

play12:46

not just to the cluster, but across every display.

play12:49

Wallpapers are a great way to show off those big panoramic displays,

play12:52

and to add even more of your unique flavor to Next Generation CarPlay.

play12:57

They’re also a great way to compliment your unique gauge and layout choices.

play13:01

For example, pairing this landscape with this technical, linear gauge style

play13:05

evokes adventure and off-roading.

play13:08

Speaking of displays, as we’ve mentioned we know they come in all shapes and sizes.

play13:14

Let’s look at this design in a wider format

play13:16

to show how our components flex to adapt.

play13:20

These linear gauges in particular feel well suited to wide, slim driver displays.

play13:26

What about a more irregular screen?

play13:29

Well one of our previous gauge layouts would lend it’s self well to this shape,

play13:32

especially with a little fine tuning of the component sizes,

play13:35

but perhaps you're looking for something less instrumentation focused.

play13:40

If you want to maximize the impact of maps, ADAS, or just media,

play13:44

we have compact options for layout and instrumentation too.

play13:49

And that’s the basics of laying out a co-branded instrument cluster.

play13:54

Highly modular, for even more choice in design

play13:56

and in the functionality your want to surface.

play13:59

Incredibly flexible, so no matter the hardware size,

play14:02

shape, or configuration, it always feels at home.

play14:06

And last but not least,

play14:07

support for beautiful custom backgrounds across all displays

play14:12

At a high level, that covers the majority of the design system for automakers.

play14:17

It empowers you, in partnership with our team here

play14:19

to develop a beautiful co-branded experience that celebrates both brands.

play14:24

One that’s unique to you and your feature set,

play14:26

and totally at home in your configuration.

play14:29

But we also know how important it is for drivers to customize their experience.

play14:35

So to complete our look at the instrument cluster today,

play14:38

let’s talk about some of the choices

play14:39

drivers have to surface content in the cluster and beyond,

play14:43

along with some opportunities that this presents for you.

play14:47

No matter the layout or design you land on,

play14:49

the system will always have a reserved space for what we call dynamic content.

play14:55

Some layouts can be configured to feature this content at all times

play14:58

as a permanent part of their design.

play15:00

Looking at the two designs on the left here,

play15:03

the layout on top features a regular sized content area for it’s middle component:

play15:07

a trip computer.

play15:09

The bottom by contrast uses a large content component to hero the map,

play15:13

paired with compact instrumentation.

play15:17

Others though, might prefer to utilize the full display for instrumentation

play15:21

but even then, dynamic content can be stacked behind non-critical gauge elements

play15:25

so the user can have an immersive instrument focused experience

play15:29

without sacrificing access to useful content options.

play15:33

Whatever position the dynamic content area ends up in,

play15:36

it’s always easy for the driver to interact with.

play15:39

They simply flip through the different options using your steering wheel controls

play15:43

This should be a pretty familiar pattern for most drivers today.

play15:47

The dynamic content area also serves as the default location

play15:51

for notifications and pop-ups.

play15:53

We support a variety of notification formats,

play15:56

from the basic text and symbol, including interactive and dismissible variations

play16:01

to rich overlays that feature multiple states,

play16:03

including image assets of your vehicle.

play16:07

If your particular system needs to show two notifications at the same time,

play16:10

Next Generation CarPlay can support that too.

play16:14

And dynamic content is not just limited to the driver display.

play16:18

Drivers can choose from favorites like Maps and Now Playing,

play16:22

as well as all new vehicle information like trip computer, tire pressure,

play16:26

and your advanced driver assistance systems.

play16:29

For content that includes a visual of the vehicle, like on the top left,

play16:33

Next Generation CarPlay supports your imagery.

play16:36

Your vehicle rendered how you like it

play16:39

You can also reflect different attributes if you want, like color, or trim level.

play16:43

It’s up to you and the detail you want to show.

play16:47

Cluster content will focus on the core driving experience,

play16:50

but center and passanger displays present an exciting space

play16:53

for more diverse content.

play16:55

You can imagine the ways these collections could expand in the future

play16:58

with even more apps and categories.

play17:00

We’re eager to work with you to explore what’s possible,

play17:03

including ways to surface your own unique content.

play17:06

That’s dynamic content,

play17:08

a simple but powerful feature

play17:10

that surfaces so much of the things drivers love.

play17:13

It’s always available in the cluster,

play17:15

regardless of the chosen layout or gauge style.

play17:18

It combines the best features and content from the vehicle with favorites from iOS.

play17:23

And it ensures there’s always a clear space for notifications and pop-ups.

play17:28

We can’t wait to see this exciting feature and how it'll evolve in your cars.

play17:34

Taken all together,

play17:35

this system allows you to create a deeply customized,

play17:38

integrated experience for your vehicles,

play17:41

and an delightful co-branded experience

play17:43

for those people who love both our products.

play17:47

It goes far beyond what you can do with CarPlay today.

play17:51

A deeply customizable design system.

play17:55

A flexible layout system that can adapt to your hardware configuration

play17:58

and design preferences.

play18:01

Backgrounds and color theming across every driver display.

play18:05

Dynamic content that combines vehicle info with fan favourite CarPlay features.

play18:10

And so much more than we can cover today,

play18:13

like the new native climate app that you can see on the center screen here

play18:16

as well as terrestrial radio with hard key integration for everything, of course.

play18:21

There’s also automaker settings for effortlessly folding all your features in,

play18:25

and automaker apps that ensure you can elegantly surface

play18:28

your unique experiences and interfaces

play18:31

and update them as easily as updating your app today.

play18:35

And that’s a look at The Next Generation of CarPlay’s design system.

play18:39
