Burgers film continues to study the hell

of war and mechanized War which is a

common thematic feature of Great War

movies but the message of the story goes

to Great Lengths to emphasize is the

contrast between the people running the

war and the people fighting the war

contrast even seeps into the film's

colors Reds are very red Blues are very

the theme is established from the very

offset Paul and his friends sign up to

fight because they want to represent and

win glory for their Nation they imagine

themselves strolling into Paris as

conquerors with the German flag waving

behind them but the reality turns out to

be less glamorous

Paul is given the uniform of a recently

yes Paul and his friends will be

representing the German State on the

battlefield but by becoming

Representatives they forfeit their

individual value in the eyes of their

taste of battle is brutal cold and

soul-crushing to quote the director his

collapse bunker is a rebirth just not

the triumphant one he expected

but All Quiet on the Western Front does

not only keep us with Paul and his

fellow soldiers as it is sent further

into the pit of Hell instead we're

constantly thrown over to Armistice

negotiations in a luxurious French train

car where diplomats and Generals argue

over how the war should end

these setting switches are pretty

dramatic and usually begin with food

being eaten another sharp contrast to

how the soldiers eat for pollen cat a

raw goose egg becomes a height of dining

but full disclosure I've never had a

ragu sag so maybe it's pretty good I

don't know

the train car discussion shed light on

the mindset that plays wartime leaders

Daniel Brule's character sees the

soldiers like we see Paul Caden Albert

they're complicated individuals with

moral value who deserve the best

leadership possible in the preservation

of their lives should be a consideration

during negotiations

unfortunately he's really the only man

that holds this position partly because

his own son died

the other men only see themselves as

negotiators yes for their State's

interest but more importantly for their

State's image

it's not surprising that this would be

their perception because it's true to a

certain extent they are negotiating on

behalf of their countries

the problems that their considerations

are too broad

as Paul and his friends are told when

they sign up Modern Warfare is never

about the individual it's about the

whole they are just a minuscule piece of

the entire entity

this way of thinking does not only

affect German High command it also

causes the Ally negotiators to have no

sense of urgency in the train car

because why would they the military

aspect of the war has been decided and

now the state's image and future

influence will be decided with pens and

paper not guns and tanks

the lives of thousands hanging the

balance are just a relevant background

noise merely numbers on a report

waiting on the other side of

negotiations is peace the film begins

with a warm undisturbed Foxhole to show

what war makes impossible and there are

many more nature shots throughout the

movie to emphasize what could be if both

sides walked away

but because of human imperfection green

forests are blackened by artillery and

families are shattered

the main characters we follow

voluntarily leave their families which

is a choice they come to regret but they

quickly form a small wartime family that

allows them to enjoy small moments of

Peace when the battles end

Burger said he wanted to show how even

the smallest moments become impactful

during war

a letter from your wife a decent meal

with your friends even a beetle you find

roaming around becomes something you can

truly soak in and appreciate because

those moments of calm could be

extinguished by one single order

these scenes add a lot to the characters

and make us feel their deaths more

deeply

without the wartime family our

character's Spirits would have been

destroyed long before their bodies

they support each other to the very end

in the symbol of their familial bond is

franz's scarf which he gets from a

French girl

when everyone is alive it's white when

it's taken off Paul at the very end it's

stained by Blood and dirt

Paul's relationships with the other men

also alter his perspective of the enemy

he's been taught that they're just a

pair of boots with a rifle to use cat's

own words about himself

it's almost impossible to fight in a war

without holding that view

but when Paul kills a young Frenchman in

close combat for a brief moment he sees

the enemy as one of his friends just

like his best friend cat the French

soldier has a wife at home and a living

child

he feels the pain and anguish the Man's

family are set to endure once they find

out what happened and he tries his best

to turn back time it's probably the most

moving scene of the film and Paul's face

is appropriately divided into by the mud

I personally see that as a split between

the person Paul was and what he's become

this is the most glaring moment when

both sides confront each other

one by one Paul's family is broken by

War Albert is put to the torch during

the insane tank sequence charting kills

himself to prevent his slow death but

the most devastating loss is cat whose

death is foreshadowed early on by the

song they sing to him the farmer will

get you with his rifle

cat keeps Paul and most of his friends

alive early on and is a constant source

of uplifting humor Paul follows CAD like

an older brother and his random

pointless death brings Paul to the point

of resignation

when he receives the order to fight

another battle for the sake of one

General's Pride he does as instructed

with the look of someone who knows he's

doomed

Paul dies in the darkness of War right

before the light of Peace emerges and

all he's allowed is a brief glimpse

his death is the ultimate example of the

cost of needless Warfare

a young man we've grown to care for dies

as his general watches comfortably in a

distance totally disconnected from the

tragedy for him Paul's death is worth a

better image for the German army

when the battle is over and Paul's dog

tag has been collected we're taken Back

To Nature which is now undisturbed by

artillery and tanks

sadly the peace will not last long just

22 years later Hitler will bring these

same train car out of a museum and

accept the French's surrender in the

same wartime patterns we see in All

Quiet on the Western Front will repeat

Burger's film is brilliant in a worthy

companion to other famous World War One

movies for me it sort of feels like a

spiritual sibling to 1917 because of the

narrow focus on a single character just

on the other side of the conflict the

themes will never stop being relevant

they cut to the core of human nature and

those are the stories I tend to

appreciate most
