Outlines
đ Understanding Cognitive Functions
This paragraph introduces the concept of cognitive functions, dividing them into two main groups: perceiving functions, which are used to perceive information and are likened to lenses, and rational or judging functions, which assign value to perceived information and are compared to codecs. The speaker emphasizes the importance of using this video as a reference for cognitive function definitions and provides a brief overview of how these functions operate together. The focus is on Extraverted Sensing (Se), which is described as a lens directed externally to perceive a specific portion of reality in a detailed and concrete manner, locking the individual into a present-tense time frame.
đ Exploring Extraverted and Introverted Perceptions
The paragraph delves into the differences between Extraverted Sensing and Extraverted Intuition, with the latter being described as a broader lens that perceives a larger portion of reality but with less detail, leading to a more abstract perception. It also introduces Introverted Sensing and Introverted Intuition, explaining how they are the internal counterparts of their extraverted versions. The speaker encourages viewers to consider the fluid space between natural opposites, suggesting that each function can dip into the characteristics of its opposite to some extent.
đĄ Introverted and Extraverted Feeling Functions
This section discusses the feeling functions, starting with Extraverted Feeling, which focuses on the emotional atmosphere and social harmony of a group. It is described as a collectivist approach that values the emotional well-being of others. In contrast, Introverted Feeling is more concerned with individualistic identity and internal emotional harmony. The speaker also mentions the importance of not falling into stereotypes and understanding the true nature of these functions.
đ€ Thinking Functions and Their Orientations
The paragraph explains the thinking functions, beginning with Introverted Thinking, which is concerned with internal logic and the cerebral cortex, seeking to ensure internal consistency and truth. Extraverted Thinking, on the other hand, is oriented towards the external world and objective order, focusing on the relationships between external components. The speaker suggests that there is a middle ground between these functions and encourages viewers to consider this when understanding cognitive functions.
đ Summary of Cognitive Functions
The final paragraph provides a concise summary of the cognitive functions discussed in the video. It reiterates the characteristics of Extraverted Sensing, Extraverted Intuition, Introverted Sensing, and Introverted Intuition, as well as the feeling and thinking functions. Transcripts
so I know a lot of people who watch my videos might struggle to keep up with the terminology
it may be a rather infuriating process
of having to pause the video every one or two minutes in order to look up the
definition of any single term that I'm using
well, I want you to use this video
and other videos in this series
as a kind of cheat sheet
I highly recommend to anyone watching a video on my channel
or indeed a video on a channel similar to mine
to keep this video open alongside it
because using this video alongside the timestamps I've provided below
will allow you to very easily consult
any given cognitive function definition you are seeking
so refer back to the video in this series whenever you are seeking
a fast and reliable definition of a particular term I'm using
so first of all let us divide cognitive functions into two groups
the first group is comprised of the perceiving functions
these are the functions you use in order to perceive information
think of them as lenses
whereas the second group is comprised of
the rational functions, the judging functions if you will
think of these as the codecs
because while they're not perceiving information
they are still assigning value to information that is perceived
and as you might guess and as I'm going
to get to in a later video in this series
these two functions operate alongside each other
so first of all let us look at Extraverted Sensing
a function usually conveyed with the letters Se on paper
well first of all I need you to throw any kind of
hedonistic associations of this function out of your head
throw any kind of low intelligence stereotypes out of your head
because honestly seeking to justify the entanglement of these terms
with the concept of Extraverted Sensing
is only going to make you more and more confused
well the easiest thing to do if
you're seeking to define and understand what Extraverted Sensing is
is to picture a lens
as human beings are essentially two different worlds we can perceive
there is the external world, what's going on outside of our heads
and then there is the internal world
the imagination, the recollection of memories
the use of mental arithmetic
well, take again that lens, direct it outside of your head
and then lock on to a very specific portion of reality
you are seeing the details, you are seeing the raw intangible
what you're perceiving is so concrete
that it essentially locks you into a relatively present tense time scale
because you're not so much trying to anticipate what's happening next
as you are concerned with what is happening tangibly right in front of you
you are paying so much attention to what's going on in the foreground
that you aren't necessarily paying as much attention
to what's happening in the background
so Extraverted Sensing: a lens directed externally
so gazing at the external world
concerning itself with a small portion of reality
so very focused and locked on
and so detailed in its perception
as to make what is being perceived so tangible
as to make the perception relatively static
and inhabiting a relatively present tense time frame
so now let us look at Extraverted Intuition
think of this as Extraverted Sensing's natural opposite
again picture a lens, direct the lens externally
these two functions have this in common
they are still perceiving the world outside of the self
however, whereas Exraverted Sensing is very small in scope, singular in its perception
Extraverted Intuition is a complete opposite of this
it is encapsulating a much larger portion of reality
however, what happens when we perceive a larger array of components at once?
these components lose detail
and the loss of detail causes them to become less tangible
less concrete and subsequently more abstract
alongside the perception of these vagaries
there is also an underlying assumption of the missing pieces
the Extraverted Intuitive perception is essentially trying to fill in the blanks
and rather than looking towards what is
and what is known, what is concrete
it is rather looking to the relationship between all of these various moving parts
sufficiently so as to form a big picture overview
so Extraverted Intuition: take a lens, direct that lens externally
rather than locking the lens on at something very specific
and now we're in the scope as in Extraverted Sensing
I want you to instead completely broaden the scope
try to encapsulate as much as possible
and you'll notice this kind of peripheral vision
lacks detail, it lacks focus
but it is very attentive to movement
it is very attentive to say
the relationship between all of the various different colors that are being perceived
and as it is looking more towards
associations in order to fill in the blanks
it'll be therefore looking more towards
the movement of these various different vagaries
and therefore the time frame it will be inhabiting will be a kind of relative
future tense stemming from the present
and now let's look at the introverted variance of these functions
because these are the same functions they're just oriented in the opposite direction
Introverted Sensing is the same function of Extraverted Sensing
it is still a very specific lens concerned with the tangible and the concrete
however, if you direct this lens internally, into your mind
you are perceiving and interacting with
the concrete information stored within your brain
what is concrete information within the brain?
well, memories for a start
but not just memories what is known, what is absolute
please do not conflate Introverted Sensing with introverted sensation
these are two very different things
Introverted Sensing can be incredibly, incredibly rational
and just as with Extraverted Sensing
the lens of Introverted Sensing is directed very specifically
it is not encapsulating a large portion of internal reality at once
but rather perceiving a very specific portion of your mind
entertaining only a few different values at once
however, these values that are being perceived by Introverted Sensing
are very rich and very detailed
they are values that can be relied upon
and because a very specific lens of Introverted Sensing is engaging with
the tangible and the concrete within your brain
it inhabits a much more past tense time frame
not in the sense of this individual
constantly, nostalgically reminiscing upon the past
that is a highly superficial stereotype
honestly most Introverted Sensors are not so dreamy
however what is known
is information that has been previously found to be true
there is an intrinsic relationship
between Introverted Sensing and previous experiences
because what is known and what is absolute and what is concrete
for as long as it is stored internally
will always have past tense ramification
so when you are trying to understand Introverted Sensing
stay clear of the stereotype of this individual
constantly reflecting upon the past
constantly evading the unknown
and rather picture an individual who prefers facts over assumptions
picture an individual whose internal dialogue gravitates much more towards the absolute
than the vagaries of the abstract
so now let us look to Introverted Sensing's natural opposite
take that very specific lens, maintain its orientation
direct it as it is much more towards your internal reality than your external reality
and simply broaden its scope
have it encapsulate a much larger portion of perceived reality
because Introverted Intuition is the same function of Extraverted Intuition
it is simply facing the other direction
and just as with Extraverted Intuition
since this function is no longer perceiving the details
rather perceiving multiple values at the same time
all of these values become much more vague
the vision becomes much more peripheral in nature
and what happens if we lose that sense of detail
we need to essentially fill in the blanks
this is what Introverted Intuition is doing
it is not producing insights, it is not forming truths
it is not a mystical function connected to the deep and profound
No, Introverted Intuition forms conjecture
conjecture that is necessary to make
sense of the otherwise entirely vague values being perceived
and since it is gazing across such a large portion of the internal world
and looking towards a relationship between a multitude of different internally perceived components
it is also forming future visions and alternative scenarios
and since this perception of all these vague components
leads so often to the entertainment of the hypothetical
a reliance on conjecture
this function tends to inhabit a relatively future tense time frame
because rather than looking towards what
is known as in the case of Introverted Sensing
Introverted Intuition instead concerns itself with what may be
so as such we have a lens directed internally
encapsulating a large portion of what is being perceived
this subsequently leads to a loss of detail
a loss of detail which must be made up for
by conjecture and imagination
and because there's such a heavy use of abstract imagination
the concocted world of what may be
gives this function a highly future tense slant
and now I need you to do me a favor
take these four functions I've just presented
and very lightly for now
because I'm going to be addressing this more thoroughly in a later video in this series
entertain the space that exists between all natural opposites
what do I mean by this?
take Extraverted Sensing, take Extraverted Intuition
and just allow the idea of there being a kind of fluid space
in between each of these extremes
an Extraverted Sensor will be using a little bit of its opposite
and therefore encapsulating a slightly larger scope than the micro
and vice versa for Extraverted Intuition
take Extraverted Sensing again
but have it dip into its opposite orientation
not only perceiving what is known, but also consulting previous experiences
take Extraverted Intuition
not only seeking to understand the relationship between external components
but also internally extrapolating upon that perception
and now do the same for Introverted Sensing and Introverted Intuition
just allow the possibility of there being some kind of space existing in between them
have an Introverted Sensor dip a little bit into Introverted Intuition
slightly expand their scope of internal perception
have an Introverted Intuitive dip lightly again into Introverted Sensing
hone in on a specific value of what would otherwise be a sea of vagaries
no need to go overboard for now, no need to make this too complicated
just entertain the possibility
of there being a space in between all natural opposites
and now let's move on to the Codec functions
these functions are going to be a lot easier to explain
because they are far less experiential in nature
there's much less of an existential equation presented when talking about these specific functions
first of all let's take the feeling functions
posit both of these functions as subjective
connected to the limbic system
the desires of self, the desires of others
emotions felt, emotions expressed
the human component
understanding yourself, seeing yourself in other people
well first of all let's look to the extraverted variant of this function, Extraverted Feeling
as a feeling function this is a domain of external subjective logic
not subjective because it involves an internalization
but rather because it is dealing with subjective data
and as it is external, it is dealing with the subjectivity of others
rather than the subjectivity of self
or that is the subjective data that is being perceived
is there chaos in this relationship? is there chaos in this group?
what is the human data being expressed?
how do I interact with the emotional atmosphere?
how are other people interacting with the emotional atmosphere?
it is in essence a collectivist equation
because it is seeking to harmonize the group on a fundamental level
Extraverted Feeling isn't just the abidence by superficial norm
Extraverted Feeling isn't just smiles and kisses
but these are often optimal courses of action
in order to produce a desired social result
because an Extraverted Feeler feels emotional harmony
they feel emotional chaos on a very raw and fundamental level
there is no internalization taking place
because the social harmony, the human order
has, in this instance, an intrinsic value
there is no ulterior motive to the Extraverted Feeler
other than producing a desirable social atmosphere
a social atmosphere which is strong, harmonious
and can be relied upon not to fail in the future
however, let us now direct this feeling function internally
rather than perceiving upon the subjective limbic human order of the external world
you are now gazing upon the internal world
and assigning value therein
and therefore this particular function is more concerned with one's internal emotional harmony
one's internal value's, one's internal identity
and while both of these extremes will be naturally dipping into each other
the predominant Introverted Feeler will be looking more towards an individualistic identity
what is meaningful to me?
what are my values?
how do I relate to the world around me?
how do I reconcile my individuality with that of others?
what's going on inside another person's head?
in what ways are they different to me?
who am I going to be in five years time?
how have I changed from five years ago?
all of these questions are the domain of Introverted Feeling
but rather than being answered in a detached manner
these questions are rather felt
and will of course be answered in a much more hardcore, rationalistic manner
relative to the degree to which this Introverted Feeler is dipping into Introverted Thinking
but this function very much sets the Introverted Thinking agenda
to answer those questions first and foremost
and since I've now introduced Introverted Thinking ahead of time
let's jump right into that
just as how Introverted Feeling is the internalization of subjective logic
concerned more with the limbic system
Introverted Thinking rather is the internalization of objective logic
concerned more with the cerebral cortex
and while these two functions are of course constantly interacting with each other
entertaining again that fluid space I presented earlier
in its furthest extreme Introverted Thinking is much more detached
seeking to make sense of internally stored components entirely for their own sake
and more to do with simply cross-referencing values stored in the brain
just to ensure everything adds up
and there are no falsehoods being perceived within the internal mind
and finally let us now orient this function externally and take Extraverted Thinking
well this function is entirely concerned with the objective order, the external world
this doesn't have to be tools
this doesn't have to be diagrams and graphs
it doesn't have to be intrinsically connected to achieving a result
when you're talking about Extraverted Thinking data
just perceive anything in the external world minus a human equation
it could be color theory, it could be decorating
it could be design
anything that concerns the active observation of the relationship between
one externally perceived objective component and the other
constitutes Extraverted Thinking
when an INFP is gazing upon Extraverted Thinking data
they're not necessarily looking as much towards mechanisms as they are towards beauty
because Extraverted Thinking is on an axis with Introverted Feeling
I'm not going to go into that too much right now
but I will be presenting the axes in a later video
so I guess for now, take my word for it
and of course whether or not an Extraverted Thinker is
abiding by rules or creating rules, observing objective relationships or creating them
through design for example
depends entirely upon the attitude of the function
and this is yet another area I'm going to be visiting in more depth
in a later video in this series
but in many ways Extraverted Thinking is the perception of pure order
absent an intrinsic human component
and before we jump to the summary I need you to do something for me yet again
allow a space to exist between all of these different extremes
allow Extraverted Thinking to have a bit of Extraverted Feeling and vice versa
allow Introverted Thinking to have a bit of Extraverted Thinking
allow Introverted Feeling
especially, given the stereotypes that go around, to have Introverted Thinking
again, no need to dive down a rabbit hole
just allow for the possibility in the back of your mind
of there being a kind of middle ground between all of these different functions
and now for the summary
this is the part that I hope most people will be watching
because this is really the cheat sheet part of the video
Extraverted Sensing: a concrete lens directed externally
focused on a very specific portion of reality
concrete in nature and inhabiting a relatively present tense time frame
Extraverted Intuition: a lens again directed externally
but encapsulating a much broader portion of reality
since the details being perceived are more vague
conjecture is necessary in order to essentially fill in the blanks
as such it is much more associative
and inhabiting a relatively future tense time frame
that stems from the present moment of perception
having as it does an anticipatory quality
Introverted Sensing: a very specific lens directed internally
looking towards the concrete and tangible information within one's brain
what is known, what is familiar
what has been previously experienced
what has been proven to be true
and because of its reflective nature
inhabiting more than any other
a relatively past tense time frame
Introverted Intuition: as with Extraverted Intuition
an extremely broad lens, but in this case directed internally
as it encapsulates a large portion of internal reality
the myriad of different values being perceived tend to lose detail
and in order to essentially fill in the blanks
one must look towards how all of these values are interacting with each other
As such relying upon internalized abstraction
to understand the relationship between all of these perceived values
and as internalized abstraction and conjecture
are so necessary in order to essentially make up for the lack of perceived detail
through necessity this function tends to
inhabit a much more future tense and hypothetical time frame
seeking to predict what things will be
in order to make up for what is currently not known
Extraverted Feeling: the assignment of values to external human equation
rather than what emotions am I feeling
it's what emotions are other people expressing
rather than the identity of the individual, it is the identity of the collective
social order, mirror empathy, subculture, culture, society
the intrinsic value of the human element
the maintenance of an adherence to social order entirely for its own sake
Introverted Feeling: the assignment of internal subjective value
not so much what am I feeling, but more how it revolves around the self-concept
how do I relate to the world around me?
how do I relate to another person?
even possible conjecture as to how that person relates to you
how that other person relates to the world around them
how do I fit in within the world?
what's my place?
what's my purpose? what is my identity?
what do I want to become? what is meaningful to me?
and indeed that hazy middle ground
between Introverted Feeling and Introverted Thinking that concerns moral values
with Introverted Feeling being the portion of cognition that feels those values
and Introverted Thinking being the portion that seeks to answer objectively all of those aforementioned questions
Extraverted Thinking: the assignment of objective value toward a thing externally perceived
how does one component interact with and relate to another?
just as Introverted Feeling will be seeking to relate the self to the world around it
Extraverted Thinking will be seeking to
relate one objective component to another one
what is objectively beautiful? what is objectively harmonious?
literally any kind of assignment of value which is absent a human element
humans have no special value
absent the part they play within the objective picture
because yeah Extraverted Thinking can very much be concerned with mechanisms
but it can also be concerned with objective beauty
but Extraverted Thinking is still oftentimes striving towards
maximal harmony in the external world
and in response to that harmony
an Introverted Feeler might feel beauty
and finally Introverted Thinking
is nothing more than the detached assignment of objective value
to that which is stored within your brain
how does one internally stored value interact with another one?
keeping a value in your brain
and cross-referencing it against other values
perceiving the relationship between internally stored objective component
creating original theory as much as maintaining existing
objective order within your brain
entertaining hypothesis
seeking to understand the relationship
between all perceived objective components
and of course whether or not Introverted Thinking
as just one example
will be trying to cross-reference multiple components at once
or just a select few, will be entirely relative to
the lens function to which it is assigned
because the perceiving functions
the lens functions such as Extraverted Sensing
and the rational functions
the codec functions such as Extraverted Thinking
cooperate with each other
and therefore the scope of a codec is going to be determined by the lens to which it is assigned
and I'm going to be visiting that in much more detail
in a later installment in this series
but I hope this video is useful
and I hope it serves as an effective reference point to come back to
whenever you're confused about any given cognitive function I'm referring to in any given video
