Q & A
Outlines

[Music] I'm Tsuyoshi, a snowboarding coach at Miratori Juku. This
time , there was a question asked
in the comments about how to carve by leaning your body a lot, and how you can stand up the board so much in a duck stance (make a lot of edge work).
So I would like to talk about some tips for carving that lean your body a lot towards the inside of the turn.
This is an explanation for those who are able to carve while riding the edge to some extent as a necessary condition, but find
it difficult to lean their body. To lean your body, you first need a certain degree of inclination and speed. Even if you don't have enough speed, you can lean your body on a gentle slope, but you
won't be able to return to the turn.
It also depends on the snow quality and equipment. If you try too hard to set up your board in soft snow,
the nose can get stuck, so when practicing, it's easier to practice on a well-compacted barn.
This time, we will focus on tips on how to use your body.
There are two major points.
Take the plunge and move your center of gravity to the inside of the turn and maintain a solid carving form.
Of course, there are other details to keep in mind, but these two are the most important.
We will use a practice method that boldly moves the center of gravity of your body to the inside of the turn.
This time we will focus on heel turns.
When turning from the toe side to the heel side, the situation is similar to a reverse edge. For the first half of the turn (like a catching edge),
set the edge on the opposite side of the slope.
Although the center of gravity is lowered, the ground is far away.
That's why it's scary to drop your center of gravity all at once to the fall line.
I, too, get a little scared when I think of falling from this stopped state to the fall line.
At first, I think there is some fear of bringing the center of gravity (center, tanda) to the inside of the turn during the first half of the turn.
Therefore, I think that fear often makes it difficult to bring the center of gravity to the inside of the turn, and therefore
the board cannot stand.
The other thing is to ride with good carving form.
The form you use when setting up the board is important.
You can stand the board up as long as you lean your body. The board can stand, but the problem is how to pick yourself up
from that fallen form and take the next turn.
It's difficult if you don't have the correct carving form. If your body weight is too much on your front leg, your hips are not facing the direction you are moving, or your
form is not correct, you may be able to stand up on the plank, but then you will fall.
Correct carving form is essential in order to connect turns without falling.
If you can do those two things well, I think the board will stand up solidly and lead to the next turn.
So how should I do it? First, let's eliminate fear.
I mentioned earlier that it's scary to lean too far from the ground in the first half of a turn.
However, in the second half of the turn, when you lean your body inward, you are closer to the ground.
So I don't think it's that scary.
At first, instead of practicing in the first half of the turn,
try leaning your body in the second half of the turn.
To get rid of your fear, first try this carving form while sitting.
First, sit normally. Then, both of your butts
will be sitting directly next to each other with their butts touching the snow surface.
In carving form, your butt should be on top of your back leg.
Turn your hips (belly button) towards your nose. This will keep your rear butt off the snow surface.
The form should be such that the side of your butt on the opposite side and your pelvis are touching the snow surface. Then, extend your front legs (as if stretching them).
When the front legs are extended and the hips (navels) are turned towards the nose, the knees of the back legs will bend firmly.
If you just stand up on the board and lean your body in this form, you won't be putting much pressure on the board, so
it's important to keep your upper body upright. Raise your upper body, bend your front hip further, and
place your head on your front foot. Twist it firmly.
In my case, I raise my upper body by imagining that my back hand is holding a board at the extension of the knee of my front leg. Bend your hips and place your head on your front legs. Spread your front hand firmly.
The form will look like this.
This is what the form looks like from the front.
You will be in a very low position.
It is important to raise your upper body, but
if you simply raise your upper body like this, your head will not be on top of your front legs.
This will result in a backward leaning form, so
make sure to raise your upper body firmly, bend your hips, and
press your front leg with your head.
Once you have mastered the sitting form, the next step is to practice sitting in this form while making turns.
① Create this form while standing still.
Once you are able to do it, the next step
is ② Fall down in carving form from a standing position. Check your posture.
Looking from the side, it looks like this.
I will practice like this.
This exercise is easier to do on a slope than on a flat surface.
It's easier to do it on the slope because it doesn't hurt your butt.
➂This time, sit in carving form while running diagonally.
Practice in a wide area, making sure that no one is sliding down from behind you. Be careful not to bump into each other.
It's a role model. I'm coming. After going downhill,
use the carving form shown in step 1 to sit down and stop.
Once you're able to do it and get used to it, you
can start by going downhill at an angle of about 45 degrees and
stopping by sitting in carving form.
If you can do it well, you will go up a little to the side of the mountain.
Next time I'll start with a straight downhill.
Sit and stop in the same carving form.
Make sure to check your carving form each time.
If things go well, you will go further up the mountain than before (to the opposite side of the fall line).
This time, let's try it with Goofy (left foot in front).
From the downhill slope, sit in carving form.
Gradually make it diagonal, and this time sit straight downhill.
Try practicing like this.
Once you're able to do it,
try leaning down from the toeside slope.
It can be scary to lean your body towards the inside of the turn during the first half of the turn, but keep your upper body upright and maintain carving form from the beginning of the turn.
From this form, lean your body firmly.
I'll try Goofy too.
When you stop, check your form carefully.
If I can get my form right, and if the centrifugal force, speed, and snow conditions are good,
I think I'll be able to move on to the next turn.
In this way, if you ride with good carving form, your turns will connect.
With good form, you're applying firm pressure to the board.
The added pressure means that you have a solid foundation under your feet, and from there
you can start the movement of standing up or switching turns. Please try it.
I'll try it with Goofy too. [Music]
If your footing is solid, you will be able to get up properly.
This time, I explained how to set up the board (to create a firm edge).
To summarize this time , the key was to
create a solid carving form and lean your body to the inside of the turn
. Some of the students I teach
have a theoretical understanding of good form, but sometimes they forget when actually riding. The waist (belly button) may not be facing towards the nose,
the body may rest too much on the front legs, or
the upper body may not be raised enough.
I think you'll improve quickly if you don't just practice on the slopes
, but also practice repeatedly in front of a mirror at home.
You may not be able to do it well at first, but
I think you'll get better and better
if you figure out what went wrong when you fail !
