Travis Pastrana is one of the Godfathers
of action sports whether it be Motocross
Freestyle Motocross rally car racing or
skydiving for decades Travis has
continually pushed the boundaries of
everything he's tried his hand at if
there was a Mount Rushmore of action
sports his face would definitely be on
it when you listen to interviews or
watch videos of him he's virtually
always filled with smiles and positivity
but if you take a look back on his
career it hasn't always been a smooth
ride the question is how has one guy
been able to do well in so many areas
while consistently coming back from
injuries over the years and more
importantly how did he get to the
position he's in in the first place
Travis has long cemented himself as one
of the greatest action sports athletes
of all time but he's definitely made a
lot of sacrifices to get there this is
the story of Travis Pastrana
to truly understand the mind of Travis
Pastrana it's important to know his
background and where he came from Travis
was born on October 8 1983 in Annapolis
Maryland and was an only child to his
parents Robert and Debbie Pastrana
although both of his parents are
responsible for his upbringing his dad
in particular had a major influence on
how Travis's career unfolded Travis's
father originally grew up in Puerto Rico
before eventually migrating to Maryland
despite being a Vietnam veteran as well
as a Marine Corps drill sergeant he had
a great sense of humor and was always
down for a good time this work hard play
hard mentality manifested itself in how
Travis was raised when Travis was
growing up his father often encouraged
him to go outside of traditional
boundaries that most kids had he was
given a lot of autonomy to try and fail
that many kids just weren't given his
dad was a major proponent of doing what
you love as much as you can so from the
beginning he was extremely supportive of
Travis's career when Travis got his
first dirt bike for Christmas at just
four years old his dad spent the entire
day running alongside him as he wrote it
by the time Travis was in the fourth
grade his dad would drive him up and
down the east coast to race and did
everything he could to help out his son
this often meant leaving work on Friday
afternoons picking Travis up from school
driving through the night to whatever
state they were going to and sleeping in
the car all weekend just so Travis could
race after the race was over he'd drive
back home through the night on Sundays
and get Travis to school just in time on
Monday morning back then there was very
little money in Motocross and only a
handful of guys at the very top were
making a living off of it his dad had
the mindset that Travis was never going
to make a living riding a dirt bike but
if that's what he loved to do then he
should try to do it for as long as he
possibly could when Travis was still a
kid his dad made him a deal as long as
he ran one mile a day every day no
matter what and kept all A's and B's in
school they would do everything in their
power to get him to the track to race
even as a child Travis committed to
riding so he held up his side of the
deal and his dad did the same throughout
his childhood Travis's parents did
everything possible to get him to Events
first this meant selling their boat
motorcycle and camper and eventually
progressed to getting a second and third
mortgage his mother would even go as far
as getting a job as a flight attendant
just so they could get travel benefits
what makes this so admirable is that it
wasn't necessarily clear that Travis was
the best racer sure he would do well in
races and definitely had potential but
it's not like he was number one from the
start to his family they never cared if
he was winning for them results didn't
matter but effort did even if he wasn't
the best as long as he was doing what he
loved and putting in the work they were
willing to support him 100
fortunately this eventually paid off in
a massive way
and a nice calm roll over the finish
line for Travis Pastrana the winner of
the 125 shootout Travis Pastrana did
Cheers of the fans here at Subway
the checkers for Travis he's got to feel
good with the way he came back from
mid-pack to take over the lead and win
here at Southwick Travis Pastrana one of
only a couple of riders to win in 125
checkered flag is out and Travis trying
to give this a little taste of some of
that Freestyle Kevin Windham award some
nude finish behind him after years of
racing and progressing Travis started
consistently doing better in events he
began making a name for himself and was
finally starting to win races and get
sponsors he was known for taking risks
that a lot of other people wouldn't take
and even though this was a large
contributing factor to many of his
injuries it was also a major reason he
was able to win this was an interesting
time period because not only was he
doing really well in Motocross but he
was also excelling at freestyle which
was a completely new genre back then in
the 90s very few people were making any
money in Moto and the ones who were were
doing it in racing Travis was in a
peculiar situation because he was
finally getting sponsors for racing but
he was focusing more and more of his
time on freestyle if you don't ride dirt
bikes this distinction might not seem
that big but to Riders back then it was
a massive deal spending time doing
freestyle when you had six figure racing
contracts was the equivalent of a first
round NBA draft pick taking time off to
go play with the Harlem Globetrotters
except in this situation it was far
worse because Moto careers were much
less lucrative and tended to be a lot
shorter Motocross was already dangerous
enough as it was and Riskin getting
injured doing freestyle and potentially
missing racing events seemed incredibly
stupid to most people but this is
exactly what Travis was doing for a few
years against the will of his sponsors
Travis managed to simultaneously
maintain a successful racing and
freestyle career he won his first world
freestyle Motocross Championship when he
was just 14 which began a winning streak
that lasted all the way until 2003. at
the same time he also won three
Motocross Racing championships in the
125 CC division his racing wins then
afforded him the opportunity to race in
the next division up which would allow
him to get much larger contracts but as
you might have suspected burning the
candle from both ends could only last
for so long unfortunately Travis had a
nasty crash while practicing freestyle
just six days before the biggest race of
his career and ultimately missed out on
close to 1 million dollars of lost
Revenue in racing like many others in
the industry at the time you might be
asking yourself why would he jeopardize
such an amazing opportunity for
something so new and so risky well this
is a question that Travis began asking
himself this was a pivotal moment in
Travis's career he started off racing
because that was what he enjoyed but at
some point he noticed that he wasn't
having fun anymore the crash led him to
realize that he only wanted to pursue
what he loved the most regardless of
money a mindset that would stick with
him for decades and would lead to much
of the success that he was about to
achieve
after slowing down on racing Travis dove
headfirst into freestyle he was
constantly inventing New Tricks
modifying bikes to push their
capabilities and doing whatever he could
to help push the sport While most people
during that era were reluctant to help
others progress Travis literally built a
compound at his house full of foam pits
and airbags and invited other Riders to
come over and practice in his mind a
rising tide lifted all boats these
efforts helped him establish himself as
the leader of freestyle Motocross
throughout the majority of the early
2000s he was the first person to win an
X Games gold medal for freestyle Travis
Pastrana first goal first time for
freestyle Moto X he was the first person
to successfully land a full 360. and he
pulls it off
and perhaps most aimlessly he was the
first person to ever land a double
backflip on a dirt bike
[Applause]
you might be surprised to learn that in
spite of all of his accomplishments a
lot of riders actually didn't like
Travis most Riders had a hardcore
Rockstar mentality and Travis was more
of a clean-cut kid many people saw him
as some sort of nerdy Golden Boy and
even with all of the Innovation he was
bringing it took a long time for him to
earn people's respect of course after
securing win after win it was hard for
people not to acknowledge Travis's
dedication he was a leading Rider from
the very beginning of freestyle and had
proven himself many times over
throughout his career he would win a
total of 13 X Games medals in Moto with
none of them being gold regardless of
Industry respect though there was a lot
going on behind the scenes that many
fans weren't aware of most people just
saw the highlight reels they saw the
competition wins and the medals and the
interviews but what they didn't see was
what it took to get there at a young age
Travis Pastrana was already considered
one of the greatest Riders ever but as
people would soon learn all of his
achievements weren't without their
struggles
from the time Travis was a kid the only
thing as consistent as his wins were his
injuries he's had over 35 surgeries and
an almost equal number of broken bones
after years of riding dirt bikes his
injuries began stacking up so when he
finally got introduced to rally car
racing he saw it as a safer alternative
now you might be wondering how is
driving 50 to 120 miles per hour on a
dirt road any safer than riding a dirt
bike well surprisingly thanks to all the
harnesses and roll cages rally cars
actually resulted in a lot less injuries
although Travis kept up his freestyle
contest and even some motocross races he
would gradually turn his attention to
rally car racing instead rally cars were
a relatively new thing at the time and
similar to the birth of freestyle Moto
he was excited to be a part of it now
it's worth mentioning that while Travis
was being more conscious of getting
injured this didn't mean he was slowing
down rather it was more like he was
diversifying as a leading action sports
athlete he had a lot of friends who were
pushing the same boundaries that he was
to document all this Travis started up a
video series called Nitro Circus which
just so happened to be popular enough to
get its own TV show in the world of
action sports Travis Pastrana was
already a well-known name but getting a
TV show helped him gain celebrity on an
even larger level this may even be how
many of the people watching this video
first learned about him in the show
professional athletes from a variety of
backgrounds would travel the world
performing stunts and breaking records
some of these were huge events that were
carefully coordinated and planned out
and others were just fun Antics that
naturally happened when you gathered a
group of extreme athletes the show
spanned several seasons and eventually
led to spin-offs before evolving into a
live tour that still goes on today on
the tour a collective of some of the
best action sports athletes in the world
go from City to City performing live
shows for stadiums full of people Travis
himself isn't out pushing limits as much
as he once was but he definitely still
participates and maintain means a
variety of hobbies across several
extreme sports for the average person
and even other people in action sports
it's hard for them to understand
Travis's mentality how does he bounce
around from sport to sport almost on a
whim and do callous stunts with
seemingly no fear of danger when many
people fail to realize is that from the
beginning Travis has always just done
what he loves he loved racing so that's
what he did he loved freestyle so that's
what he did he loved rally so that's
what he did for him it's never been
about the money it's about doing what
you love for as long as you possibly can
his goal has never been to actively seek
out danger and he doesn't intentionally
crash he takes calculated risks to push
his own limits while trying to have as
much fun as possible in the process
Travis Pastrana has proven himself time
and time again across multiple lanes and
he's undeniably one of the greatest
figures in the world of action sports
