FamilyTimeFitness.com - PE Q&A What are fundamental movement patterns?
Summary
TLDRThe transcript discusses fundamental movement patterns essential for daily activities like walking, picking up objects, and bending. It emphasizes the importance of coordination between visual cues and body awareness for movements such as lateral weight transfer, forward and backward stepping, and vertical motion. The difference between walking and marching is highlighted, with the latter promoting upper and lower body communication. Fundamental patterns are foundational to more complex movements and are crucial for developing strength and flexibility in joints like the ankles and knees, which are often overlooked in physical education programs.
Takeaways
- 🚶 Fundamental movement patterns are essential for everyday activities such as walking, picking things up, carrying, bending, and reaching.
- 👀 Visual and kinesthetic senses are crucial for coordinating body movements and spatial awareness.
- 🏃 Basic movement patterns include lateral motion (side-to-side weight transfer), forward motion (stepping forward and backward), and vertical motion (climbing stairs, jumping).
- 🔄 Fundamental patterns involve coordination between the lower and upper body, which is not just limited to the lower body but also includes upper body movements.
- 🎭 The difference between walking and marching is that in marching, the arms and legs work together, creating a coordinated movement that helps in organizing communication between body parts.
- 👶 Learning to walk is an advanced movement that takes a year for a baby to master, involving progression through crawling and pulling up stages.
- 🤸♂️ Fundamental movement patterns are the building blocks for more complex movements, such as playing soccer, which requires running, kicking, and controlling the ball.
- 💪 Strength and flexibility in fundamental movements, like bending the knee and straightening it again, are crucial before advancing to more complex patterns.
- 🦿 Joints like the ankle and knee hinges are integral to fundamental movements, and their flexibility can be affected by injuries or footwear design.
- 👟 The design of shoes can impact the ankle hinge's range of motion, which is essential for fundamental movement patterns.
- 🏡 The homeschool physical education program, Core One, is designed with these fundamental movements in mind to train children in basic coordination and movement skills.
Q & A
What are fundamental movement patterns?
-Fundamental movement patterns are basic movements that allow the body to be coordinated in simple activities such as walking, picking things up, carrying, bending, reaching, and moving laterally, forward, and up and down.
How do fundamental movement patterns relate to our daily lives?
-Fundamental movement patterns are essential for everyday activities, such as walking around objects, avoiding collisions with others, and performing basic physical tasks like squatting and reaching.
What is the role of visual and kinesthetic senses in fundamental movement patterns?
-Visual and kinesthetic senses are crucial for coordinating eye-body movements, allowing individuals to understand where their body is in space and direct it through visual cues for accurate movement execution.
How does the script differentiate between walking and marching as movement patterns?
-Walking is considered an advanced movement where the arms are not actively involved, while marching involves coordinated movement between the arms and legs, which helps in organizing communication between the lower and upper body.
Why is marching used as an exercise in the military?
-Marching is used in the military to help organize and improve communication between the lower and upper body, enhancing overall coordination and movement efficiency.
What is the developmental process for a baby learning to walk?
-A baby learns to walk through a progression that includes crawling and then pulling up, which takes about a year to master.
How do fundamental movement patterns differ from advanced movement patterns?
-Fundamental movement patterns are the basic strength and flexibility exercises that precede advanced movements like walking. They include flexion and extension movements in various directions.
What are some examples of fundamental movement patterns that are essential for more complex activities?
-Examples include the ability to bend the knee and straighten it again, side-to-side and forward-and-back movements, which are crucial for complex activities like playing soccer.
How do injuries or shoe design affect fundamental movement patterns?
-Injuries or shoe design that restricts ankle movement can affect fundamental movement patterns by limiting the natural hinge actions of the body, such as those of the ankle and knee.
What is the purpose of the homeschool physical education program mentioned in the script?
-The homeschool physical education program is designed to train children in fundamental movements, ensuring they develop the necessary strength, coordination, and understanding of body movement from an early age.
Why are fundamental movement patterns important for overall physical development?
-Fundamental movement patterns are important for overall physical development as they form the basis for more complex movements and help in building strength, flexibility, and coordination.
Outlines
🚶♂️ Fundamental Movement Patterns in Daily Life
This paragraph introduces the concept of fundamental movement patterns, which are essential for our daily activities such as walking, picking up objects, and carrying things. It emphasizes the importance of coordination between vision and body movement, highlighting the kinesthetic sense that allows us to understand our body's position in space. The paragraph also touches on lateral, forward, and vertical movements, which are basic patterns necessary for navigating our environment and performing everyday tasks.

Transcripts
um we we've heard us say several times
talk about fundamental movement patterns
and so let's can we answer that question
of what are fundamental movement
patterns so that people can understand
what we're talking sure so if we look at
how do we move in our daily lives
we walk we pick things up we carry
things we Bend and bend and reach okay
so you know we've got a squat we've got
to walk maybe run
Shuffle move sideways you know move
around other objects move maybe if
you're walking on a sidewalk in a busy
City
walking around other people and not you
know see people running into each other
all the time and so you know how do we
judge that avoid that Walker even
walking around people and knowing those
things those are fundamental right to so
there's a visual component of that as
well we talk about hand eye coordination
but we're really talking about eye body
coordination that you you you know where
your body is in space so that's
kinesthetic sense you know where your
body is in space and then you can direct
your body through that visual cue
um
address that as well a fundamental
movement patterns are patterns that
allow the body to be coordinated in
those simple basic movement patterns of
lateral motion which is weight transfer
from one foot to the other Forward
Motion which is stepping forward and
back those kinds of activities and then
up and down motion so that we can go
upstairs so either climbing upstairs
stepping upward or even jumping is a
vertical motion so we have control and
direction in all planes of movement
front back side to side up and down now
in addition to that I would call
fundamental movement patterns those that
help the the lower body and the upper
body be coordinated so not just a lower
body thing but a lower end up are
starting to communicate and that is
actually walking does not really do that
but marching does so the difference
between walking is the arms are not
active in Walking the legs are doing the
work whereas in marching the arms and
legs are working to together and so that
you have a difference because I've
actually had someone as well with why
why do you do marching as an exercise
well the reason the military does
marching as an exercise is because it
helps organize a communication between
the lower and the upper body so that
that is actually a coordinated movement
walking is actually a pretty Advanced
movement it takes a year for a baby to
learn how to walk they actually have to
progress through a crawling stage and
then a pulling up stage so some of these
things that we that we think of are easy
movements oh just just durable to soccer
ball you have to run kick and control
that's a very complex movement so when
we talk about fundamental movement
patterns we're talking about things that
are way before that point I mean even
things that will help you walk better
okay even walking would be an advanced
movement pattern but the fundamental
movement pattern is before that it's the
strength of being able to bend your knee
and straighten back up again flexion and
extension movements in an up and down
motion and again side to side up and
down the side to side forward and back
and that comes into issues with ankle
hinge hip hinge you know all the
different hinges hinging actions in the
body if the ankles have been injured or
if their shoes are designed in such a
way to push the heels push the body to
the heels then the ankle hinge becomes
restricted and that's a fundamental
movement knee and you have to be able to
hinge forward across the ankles and so
these are some of the things we mean
when we talk about fundamental movement
patterns and these are the things that
we have in mind when that we designed
homeschool physical education program uh
core one we've designed it with these
fundamental movements in mind so that
your children you and your children will
be trained in these types of fundamental
movements through our program
